Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

Jimmy Page Releasing 'Death Wish II' Limited Edition Vinyl

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page is scheduled to reissue the "Death Wish II" soundtrack in a limited vinyl edition this October.

To coincide with the album’s upcoming 30th anniversary (which was released February 15, 1982), JimmyPage.com is set to re-release a limited, remastered vinyl edition of the soundtrack to Michael Winner's 'Death Wish II.' It features a previously unreleased instrumental version of the “Death Wish” main title as well as new liner notes written by Page.

“In 1981, Michael Winner asked me if I would compose the soundtrack to Death Wish II,” said Page, explaining the release of the album. “The songs with vocals were only going to appear in the film for a matter of seconds but I had recorded full versions of them anyway - which is how I ended up doing my first soundtrack and soundtrack album. I’ve re-released this because I wanted it to be available again.”

Only 1000 copies will be released next month from the Jimmy Page Shop

Winner tells the story of how Page was brought into the project.

“I'd lived next door to Jimmy for many years,” began Winner. “It was a very bad time for him - the drummer (John Bonham of Led Zeppelin) had died, and he was in a very inactive period. (Led Zeppelin manager) Peter Grant and I made arrangements for Jimmy to do the Death Wish II score, for which he wasn't actually paid, because Grant wanted to restore Jimmy back to creativity.”

“Jimmy rang the doorbell, and I thought if the wind blew he'd fall over,” Michael continued. “He saw the film, we spotted where the music was to go, and then he said to me "I'm going to my studio. I don't want you anywhere near me, I'm going to do it all on my own." My editing staff said this is bloody dangerous! Anyway, we gave him the film, we gave him the timings, and he did it all on his own. Everything hit the button totally! I've never seen a more professional score in my life.”

The Beatles Refused To Play To Segregated Audience

A contract and rider demonstrating both the political sensitivities and the relatively modest personal needs of the Beatles are to be auctioned by Los Angeles-based Nate D Sanders Auctions on September 20th.

According to a rider and contract from 1965 gig in California, it was revealed that the band's demands including electricity, water and uniformed police. In the documents drawn up ahead of a concert at the Cow Palace in Daly City, California, in 1965, the band stipulated it would not play in front of a "segregated audience." It also required the venue to provide "no less than 150 uniformed police officers for protection" and a "special drumming platform for Ringo".

The band's trailer was "to have electricity and water," the rider states, adding: "In all dressing rooms for The Beatles, the purchaser must provide four cots, mirrors, an ice cooler, portable TV set and clean towels."

Signed by the band's manager, Brian Epstein, the documents are expected to fetch close to $5,000.

Blink-182: The Billboard Cover Story

by Jason Lipshutz

It's Sept. 3, and Blink-182 is about to tear through a bunch of snotty anthems and trademark masturbation jokes during its show at Salt Lake City's USANA Amphitheatre. Hours before the concert, bassist Mark Hoppus is sitting outside in a black T-shirt and gold sunglasses, drinking bottled water and talking about a few of the gut-wrenching tracks on the band's new album, "Neighborhoods."

inspiring story out of the uk:

Shop swaps fire places for vinyl

By Mike Wright

A shop owner in Oxhey has swapped the crackle of a fire for the crackle of vinyl.

Julian Smith, who owned Grate Ideas, in Pinner Road, has converted his shop into a second-hand record store after spotting a niche in the Watford market.

The 39-year-old entrepreneur’s unorthodox business move came from his own passion for collecting obscure psychedelic records from the 1960s.

However he decided to switch businesses after learning how much of a money-spinner second hand records could be.

another great write up at hollywoodreporter.com about another favorite of mine (his vinyl from the 70s is must hear material)

Alice Cooper at the Whisky a Go Go: Concert Review

by Steven Mirkin

“We’re a bar band,” Alice Cooper announced near the start of his show Thursday night. “A Sunset Strip bar band.” What exactly differenciates a Sunset Strip bar band from a band playing at, say, a bar on Sunset and Fairfax was never explained. But on the basis of their performance at the Whisky a Go Go, it means one that can mix a fair number of their own hits along with the covers and the ability to attract a couple of well-known guest stars.

Coalesce To Reissue 'Give Them Rope' On Vinyl

Coalesce is set to reissue 1996's 'Give Them Rope' as a double LP that features a remastered version of 'Give Them Rope' and a second disc of 2010's 'Give Them Rope She Said v2.0;' a remixed version of the album. The vinyl will be abailable on November 22 via No Sleep Records.

According to Coalesce's Sean Ingram:

"Coalesce is very honored to be working with No Sleep records to give our first full length record a proper home in vinyl. This record has proved to be a very difficult challenge over the years, and some of us felt it was never quite done. The art wasn't correct, that bass line Stacy biffed needed fixing, the mastering was muddy. Whatever anyone has to say about Give them Rope, the band has their own opinions too. It's true that you never forget your first, and this sentiment is what led Ingram to revisit this record around 2002 to fix those past mistakes as it was going into repress again. The results weren't bad, but they were too different. It's something that George Lucas could appreciate, but old fans could not totally embrace. Because 2002 is in itself a long time ago, and more new fans actually heard the second version than the first, we are doing we think is the right way to approach this and No Sleep is including both versions in one Gatefold package with the original artwork reworked to include both versions."

very clever way to use the old records....

Old LPs turned into iPhone speakers

Designer Paul Cocksedge transforms old, worn out vinyl records into speakers for smartphones such as iPhone - 'horn'-style speakers of the sort that used to be used on 78rpm record players. "The miniaturisation of technology means that speakers aren’t what they used to be - they need volume, they need to be bigger," said Cocksedge.

Cocksedge applies heat to the vinyl record until it softens, then moulds it into the perfect shape needed to amplify noise - so no electricity or power is needed.

and in music history for today:

The great Hank Williams was born in 1923 (died 1953)

In 1931, the first long-playing record, a 33 1/3 rpm recording, was demonstrated at the Savoy Plaza Hotel in New York by RCA-Victor. The venture was doomed to fail however due to the high price of the record players, which started around $95 (about $1140 in today's dollars) and wasn't revived until 1948.

In 1955, Capitol Records released "Magic Melody, Part Two". The song consisted only of the last two notes of the musical phrase, "Shave and a haircut, two bits." It was the shortest song to ever to be released.

In 1956, the BBC announced the removal of Bill Haley and His Comets' “Rockin' Through the Rye” from its playlist because they felt the song went against traditional British standards. The record, based on an 18th century Scottish folk tune, was at #5 on the U.K. charts and included the lyrics "All the lassies rock with me When rockin' through the rye."

In 1964, on what was supposed to be their day off, The Beatles were paid a then record $150,000 for a concert in Kansas.

The Smothers Brothers Show premiered on CBS-TV in 1965.

In 1967, the Who appeared on the Smother Brothers Comedy Hour with Keith Moon putting too many explosives in his drums for the end of their performance, purportedly damaging Pete Townshend's hearing along with singeing his hair.

In 1967, the Doors were banned from The Ed Sullivan Show after Jim Morrison broke his agreement with the show’s producers. Morrison said before the performance that he wouldn’t sing the words, “Girl, we couldn’t get much higher,” from “Light My Fire” but did anyway. The Doors also performed their new single “People Are Strange.”

In 1968, Diana Ross records "Love Child" without the other two Supremes, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson.

Also in 1968, the Fifth Dimension were awarded their second Gold record for their rendition of Laura Nyro's "Stoned Soul Picnic". The song reached #3 on the Billboard Pop chart and #2 on the R&B chart.

In 1969, radio and print media on both sides of the Atlantic are full of stories that say Paul McCartney is dead. He was supposedly killed in a car accident in Scotland on November 9th, 1966 and that a double has been taking his place for public appearances. In fact, Paul and his girlfriend Jane Asher were on vacation in Kenya at the time. When a reporter contacted Paul at his Scottish farm, McCartney's reaction was, "Do I look dead? I'm fit as a fiddle."

Also in 1969, Tiny Tim announced his engagement to Victoria May Budinger. 40 million viewers would watch him tie the knot with 17-year-old Miss Vicki on The Tonight Show on December 17, 1969. The union produced a daughter named Tulip, but ended when Vicki filed for a divorce on March 6, 1972 and was granted in 1977.

In 1976, the Sex Pistols played a gig for the inmates at Chelmsford Prison, Essex in England.

In 1991, Rob Tyner lead singer with the American hard rock band MC5 died after he suffered a heart attack in the seat of his parked car in his hometown of Berkley, Michigan. MC5, (shortened from the Motor City Five), formed in Detroit, in 1965, they released their first album, 'Kick Out the Jams,' in 1969.

Also in 1991, over 4 million copies of Guns N' Roses album, Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II were simultaneously released for retail sale, making it the largest ship-out in pop history in the US.

In 1996, a bomb was found in a London post office addressed to Bjork. The bomb maker had made a video of himself making the bomb and committing suicide.

In 1997, Fleetwood Mac kick off their reunion tour in Hartford, Connecticut, in support of their LP, "The Dance".

In 2000, Farm Aid 2000 was held in Bistow, VA with Alan Jackson, Arlo Guthrie, Travis Tritt, Sawyer Brown, Barenaked Ladies, Willie Nelson, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Kelly Clarkson's first single "Before Your Love/A Moment Like This" was released in 2002.

In 2003, David Lee Roth injured himself while doing a very fast, complicated 15th-century samurai move onstage. Roth needed 21 stitches when a staff he was using hit him in the face. A few days later the remainder of his tour was canceled.

birthdays today (among others) include: LaMonte McLemore (Fifth Dimension) (71), Fee Waybill (Tubes) (61), Steve Williams (Budgie) (58), Jonn Penney (Ned's Atomic Dustbin) (43), Keith Flint (Prodigy) (42) & John Walker (Panic! At the Disco) (26)

Bonhams sells late Richard Hamilton's '$31,653' Rolling Stones drug bust art

His iconic work 'Release' shows singer Mick Jagger and Hamilton's art dealer handcuffed together...

One of the iconic images of the Swinging Sixties by the artist Richard Hamilton, who died yesterday, is for sale at Bonhams Print Sale in London on November 29.

'Release' shows Mick Jagger and Hamilton's art dealer Robert Fraser handcuffed together in the back of a police car shielding their faces from photographers after being arrested for possession of drugs in 1967.

The arrest followed a raid earlier in the year on a notorious party at 'Redlands', the house of Keith Richards.

Jagger was sentenced to three months imprisonment for possession of 4 amphetamine tablets. This prompted a famous editorial in 'The Times' under the title, "Who Breaks a Butterfly Upon a Wheel?' protesting at the harshness of the sentence.

The sentence was subsequently reduced to a conditional discharge on appeal.

Mick Jagger and Hamilton's art dealer Robert Fraser, painted by Hamilton

The print, which was executed in 1972, is based on a photograph of the two men taken at the time. It was produced to benefit an organisation called Release which helped people who had run into trouble with the police.

It will auction estimated at £15,000-20,000 ($31,653).

The unfortunate death of an artist always increases interest in their works - and this piece will undoubtedly benefit from collectors' desires to preserve Richard Hamilton's legacy.

But that's not all... The piece will also benefit from representing a famous and controversial episode from the Rolling Stones' career.

You don't need to be a musicologist to know that the Stones are near the very top of the rock pantheon.

Not surprisingly, their legend has resulted in much activity on the auction markets. Rolling Stones signed photographs have grown in value by 498% over the last 10 years (according to the industry's PFC40 Autograph Index).

This rare EP cover signed by all five original Rolling Stones band members is presently for sale on the markets.  Consequently, Rolling Stones group autographs  like the above pictured example for sale - are among the most coveted collectible items on the markets.

found this interesting, love her or hate her, yoko has kept lennon's legacy alive and well:

A Conversation With Yoko Ono

The artist and activist talks with Patch about music, art and an exhibit of John Lennon's art that's coming to Princeton.

By Anthony Stoeckert

When asked if John Lennon scheduled time to work on his drawings and artwork, Yoko Ono is quick to say no.

“He was not a scheduled person,” Ono says. Rather than specifying a time to draw, the music legend would start creating whenever he felt like it, she says.

“It was great that he had this talent of doing artwork because when we were in a conference with all the lawyers, and maybe 20 lawyers together, it’s so boring,” she says. “And he would just start to do drawing. He would never sort of waste any time, he was like that.”

Drawings, sketches and poetry by Lennon will be on view in “Gimme Some Truth — The Artwork of John Lennon,” at Palmer Square in Princeton, Sept. 16-18.

nice review of a lovely album!

Sound Off | Marling’s latest full of smooth acoustics

By Gabriel Dunsmith Guest Columnist

On her junior release, British singer-songwriter Laura Marling explores new styles of music and shows a dark side of her that few have seen. Even the album artwork for A Creature I Don't Know is punctuated by shadow: Overtly sexual and raw, it reflects many of the songs on the album. "The album is all about tugging and churning with goodness and darkness," the singer said. Musically and emotionally, Creature reveals a vulnerable part of Marling to the world.

Many of Marling's songs feature just her voice and the guitar at her side. "Dad had taken the time to teach me guitar," she said about learning music in her childhood. "[He] gave me a real passion for guitar that I didn't quite realize until I got out into the big wide world."

here's more info on the rolling stone's reissue i posted yesterday:

Rolling Stones Some Girls Deluxe Reissue

Press Release:

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 14, 2011 -- Universal Music Group and The Rolling Stones are pleased to announce the release on November 21, 2011 of the re-mastered, expanded, Super-Deluxe, Deluxe and Digital editions of Some Girls, the groundbreaking album which introduced the music of the Rolling Stones to a whole new generation of fans.

Justly considered one of the finest works by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and Ronnie Wood, Some Girls topped the US charts over three decades ago and remains the best selling album of their storied career. This new package will include some undiscovered gems that include tracks that have recently been unearthed from the Rolling Stones vaults by producer Don Was. Further details of the tracks will be unveiled at a later date.

Some Girls is the Rolling Stones' most direct and diverse collection of material, from Mick Jagger's irresistible falsetto on the four-on-the-floor filler Miss You, their eighth US number one, to the country-flavoured Far Away Eyes via the Chuck Berry meets punk snarl of Respectable. And let's not forget the sensuous, Beast Of Burden, one of Keith Richards' finest tunes, which reached number 8 on the US singles chart, the garage rock of Shattered, the album's third US Top 40 entry, and the soulful swagger of the group's version of The Temptations' Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me), another timeless offering in their canon of classic Stones Motown covers.

Following the critical praise and commercial success afforded the re-mastered, expanded editions of Exile On Main Street, which matched the chart performance of the epochal 1972 album, and returned the Rolling Stones to their rightful place at the top of the British charts in 2010, the extensive reissue of Some Girls constitutes the next step in the band's ongoing relationship with Universal Music Group. This started in April 2008 with Shine A Light, the soundtrack from the stunning concert film directed by Martin Scorsese, and has encompassed the reissues of the Rolling Stones re-mastered, post-1971 studio albums, several live albums and classic compilations, and the exhaustive box-set Singles 1971-2006 earlier this year.

Some Girls holds a special place in the history of the Rolling Stones and demonstrates why they remain one of the most thrilling and influential bands of all time. The 1978 album features a Keith Richards' classic Before They Make Me Run, a signature song he stills performs defiantly to this day. Some Girls documented Mick Jagger's love of 70's funk reflected in Miss You, the dance track that wrongfooted many people, made the club and black charts, and made it okay for other mainstream acts at the time to 'go disco'.

The 1978 album courted controversy because of Jagger's tongue-in-cheek lyrics on the title track, on Miss You and on Respectable, perceived as a retort to the punk and new wave groups who had borrowed so much attitude and copped so many anti-establishment moves from the Rolling Stones. Ironically, the furore around the elaborate Some Girls package, designed by Peter Corriston and featuring the band members in drag – a nod in the direction of the picture on their 1966 single Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow? – and likenesses of Lucille Ball, Farrah Fawcett, Raquel Welch, Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe that hadn't been legally cleared, necessitating a swift withdrawal and rethink.

Some Girls demonstrated the distinctive and definitive riffing from Keith Richards, with its abundance of unstoppable licks and majestic power chords driving the band into its brand new musical direction. This album not only defined him and his playing, but also defined a new era for the Rolling Stones, which Richards since described as a 'sense of renewal'. Some Girls marks the only other time since recording Satisfaction where Richards used an effects pedal to 'elevate' the sound.

The album cemented the position of guitarist Ronnie Wood, who had joined in 1975, and added his trademark slide and pedal steel playing to several of the album's most memorable tracks, including When The Whip Comes Down and Shattered. He also co-wrote the Shattered B-side Everything Is Turning To Gold. Some Girls also marked a move to the Pathe Marconi Studios in Paris for the Glimmer Twins production team of Jagger and Richards. These factors helped what is arguably the group's most focused and dynamic album, driven by the sans pareil rhythm section of drummer Charlie Watts and bassist Bill Wyman. Some Girls featured fewer guest musicians than any Rolling Stones albums since 1971, but the contributions keyboard-player Ian McLagan, Wood's bandmate in The Faces, saxophone-player Mel Collins, and harmonica-player Sugar Blue – discovered busking on the Paris metro – made Miss You in particular sound brighter than ever.

Amongst many eagerly-awaited extras, the Super-Deluxe edition of Some Girls will include a stunning, previously unseen Helmut Newton photo session from 1978, an essay by esteemed author and journalist Anthony DeCurtis putting the album in its cultural context, a 7" single of Beast Of Burden/When The Whip Comes Down in its banned sleeve.

Thirty-three years on from its original release, the re-mastered, expanded, Super-Deluxe, Deluxe and Digital editions of Some Girls show why the 1978 album has often been hailed as the equal of Exile On Main Street. Some Girls is both a time capsule and a timeless listen. It features the band at their tightest and toughest, at their most vibrant and vital. It's an all-killer, no-filler, must-have album. It still packs a punch.

SOME GIRLS - now bigger, brighter and better than ever.

SEPTEMBER 13 - ELO — The Classic Albums Collection $79.99

England's Electric Light Orchestra, better known to its fans as ELO, went from cult status to arena-level superstardom in the 1970s, evolving from eclectic classically-influenced prog-rockers to state-of-the-art hitmakers. At the peak of their popularity, they were one of the world's biggest-selling recording acts, and also one of the most unusual. Combining rock instrumentation with a full string section, ELO couldn't help but stand out, both musically and visually. Each album features rare bonus tracks, including numerous alternate versions and unreleased tracks, and includes such enduring ELO hits as "Can't Get It Out of My Head," "Evil Woman," "Telephone Line," "Livin' Thing," "Sweet Talkin' Woman," "Mr. Blue Sky," "Don't Bring Me Down" and "Hold on Tight."

SEPTEMBER 13 - EARTH, WIND & FIRE — The Columbia Masters (15 CDs) $119.99

15 newly mastered CD encompassing their astonishing recording career on Columbia Records plus a bonus disc of rarities, instrumentals and unreleased tracks supervised by EW&F's founder and spiritual guide Maurice White. Earth, Wind & Fire's horn-powered hit machine represents the best in pop melodies, harmonizing voices, funky syncopation and rhythms of the world. The set includes: 15 of the band's classic albums, newly mastered for superior sound, original LP jackets, meticulously reproduced, a 40-page booklet with photos and commentary by Maurice White. The Columbia Masters also features a newly compiled bonus disk with two unreleased tracks from the Touch the World sessions, two scintillating live performances ("Getaway" and "In the Stone") recorded in Rio de Janeiro in 1980 and rare instrumental versions of "Let's Groove" and "Boogie Wonderland" (with The Emotions).

SEPTEMBER 13 - The Complete Dexter Gordon Columbia Albums Collection (7 CDs) $55.99

"There are no second acts in American lives" wrote F. Scott Fitzgerald, a man who never would have put those words to paper had he lived to see Dexter Gordon's triumphant late career revival. Actually, the great tenor saxophonist had a number of "second acts" during his lifetime. Yet the late 1980's flourish that found Gordon (1923-1990) an international star and an Oscar nominee could hardly be topped for a dramatic finale. With a remarkable career spanning over five decades, Gordon may have come of age in the Swing Era, but he made his mark during the subsequent rise of bebop, translating Charlie Parker's revolutionary rhythmic and harmonic language to the tenor saxophone. In 1976, Gordon was signed by Columbia Records following several years in Europe, who documented him on the celebratory Homecoming: Live At The Village Vanguard. Gordon's ultra hip manner and regal bearing made him a natural for films, and in 1986, he starred in Round Midnight in a role loosely based on both Bud Powell and Lester Young, ultimately garnering a deserving Academy Award nomination.

SEPTEMBER 13 - The Complete Woody Shaw Columbia Albums Collection (6 CDs) $55.99

Encountering the name Woody Shaw (1944-1989) in print or conversation, it's not uncommon for a phrase much like " the last original trumpet voice" to follow. For Shaw was just such a player: a daring horn stylist with an utterly personal and technically advanced approach that has yet to be matched since his untimely death. After a memorable stint with the hard bop maestro, Horace Silver, Shaw leaped head first towards the post bop firmament, collaborating with such visionary player/composers as Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Andrew Hill, and Larry Young. On such landmark Columbia albums as Woody lll and For Sure! -- projects that represented a career peak for Shaw in terms of both personal creativity and commercial exposure -- his impressive compositions and arranging skills for expanded ensembles are brought to the fore. Let Miles Davis have the last word about Shaw: "Now there's a great trumpet player. He can play different from all of them."

SEPTEMBER 22- The Complete Nina Simone RCA Albums Collection (9 CDs) $71.99

As unclassifiable as she was forthright, Nina Simone (1933-2003) went her own way; it was up to her devoted audience to keep pace with her stylistic wanderings. Defiantly outspoken and willfully eclectic in her music, Simone electrified listeners with artfully intense performances.

SEPTEMBER 27 - The Complete Paul Desmond RCA Albums Collection (6 CDS) $55.99

For the bulk of the 1950s and 60's, Paul Desmond had one of the sweetest gigs in jazz history. As the featured alto saxophonist in the Dave Brubeck quartet, Desmond was a central figure in the most commercially successful jazz ensemble of the time. The sole horn in the group, Desmond attracted considerable critical and public acclaim for his supremely lyrical, sublimely melodic playing. His dulcet phrases couched in what he himself dubbed a "dry martini" tone, Desmond's alto was a defining sound of the era.

NOVEMBER 22 - The Complete Weather Report / The Jaco Years Columbia Albums Collection (6 CDs) $55.99

Rarely has an individual player so radically transformed an already established band as Jaco Pastorius (1951-1987) did upon joining Weather Report in 1976. Not only did the electric bassist set a new direction for the band, leading it to unprecedented commercial success, he also rewrote the rules for his instrument. His work with Weather Report is among the very finest of his truncated career. It may be a long while before we encounter the likes of a musical unit such as Weather Report, or an audaciously brilliant player akin to Pastorius, again.

NOVEMBER 22- The Complete Original Mahavishnu Orchestra Columbia Albums Collection (5 CDs)$44.99

The Mahavishnu Orchestra, in its original incarnation, lasted just four years, but in that brief time, the pioneering quintet set both the template and the high-water mark for fusion music. No band ever rocked as hard in a jazzy place as guitarist John McLaughlin's charging ensemble.

and in music history for september 15th:

In 1956, Elvis Presley was presented with a Gold record for "Don't Be Cruel", which has just taken over from "Hound Dog" as the best selling single in the US. When the song was recorded on July 2nd, Elvis, along with Scotty Moore, Bill Black, D.J. Fontana and The Jordanaires ran through 28 takes of "Don't Be Cruel" before he was satisfied.

In 1961, a group from Hawthorne, California, called The Pendletones attend their first real recording session at Hite Morgan's studio in Los Angeles. The band recorded “Surfin’,” a song that would help shape their career as The Beach Boys.

In 1962, the Four Seasons had their first number 1 hit when "Sherry" reached the top of both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Cashbox Best Sellers list. The song was originally titled "Terry", but after considering other names, including "Jackie", after Jackie Kennedy, the group changed the lyrics to "Sherry" after Cheri Spector, the daughter of one of Bob Crewe's best friends. Over their career the Seasons would add three more chart toppers, "Rag Doll", "Walk Like a Man" and "Big Girls Don't Cry" to their list of eleven Top 10 hits.

In 1962, the Beatles were called "a nothing group" after an interview with Peter Jones of the "London Daily Mirror." DUH!

Also in 1962, a Chinese newspaper reports what it calls "ugly displays", as teens have been seen dancing the twist in Maoming Cultural Park

In 1964, the Beatles were ordered off the stage at Cleveland's Public auditorium so the screaming crowd could calm down.

In 1965, the Ford Motor Company becomes the first auto maker to offer an 8-track tape player as an option for their entire line of vehicles. Tapes were initially only available at auto parts stores, as home 8-track equipment was still a year away.

In 1968, NBC-TV aired a new music program called Soul, a completely Black production both in front of and behind the cameras. Featured guests were Lou Rawls and Martha And The Vandellas.

In 1969, Ed Sullivan released his first and only Rock 'n' Roll record, "The Sulli-Gulli", credited to The Ed Sullivan Singers and Orchestra. The single failed to crack the Billboard Top 40.

In 1969, Deep Purple performed "Concerto for Rock Band and Orchestra" with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at London's Royal Albert Hall.

In 1970, US Vice-President Spiro Agnew says the youth of America are being "brainwashed into a drug culture" by Rock music, movies, books and underground newspapers.

In 1973, Helen Reddy reached the top spot on the Billboard Pop chart for the second time with "Delta Dawn". Her recording beat out a rendition by Bette Midler that was released at the same time and an earlier version by country singer Tanya Tucker, who took the song to number 72.

In 1974, Gary Thain (Uriah Heep) was nearly electrocuted on stage during a show in Dallas. He survives, but says that the other band members didn't show enough concern over the accident and leaves the group soon after.

'Love You Live' was released by the Rolling Stones in 1977.

In 1979, Bob Dylan released the album 'Slow Train Coming.' It was his first religiously themed album. A single called "Gotta Serve Somebody" won a Grammy Award, but the LP alienated many of his long time fans.

Also in 1979, "The Devil Went Down To Georgia", a Country / Rock tune by The Charlie Daniels Band peaks at #3 on the US Pop singles chart. The original line in the song "I done told you once, you son of a bitch, I'm the best that's ever been" was altered to "I done told you once, you son of a gun, I'm the best that's ever been" in order to gain radio air play.

The song is a narrative about the Devil, who comes to Georgia to procure souls. He has not obtained any recently, and is willing to "make a deal" out of desperation. He happens upon a young fiddle player named Johnny, who is minding his own business and playing impressively. The Devil approaches Johnny, and informs him that he, too, plays the fiddle. He then challenges Johnny to a fiddle-playing contest, confident that he is more skillful than the young boy. The terms of the duel are that should Johnny win, he will be given a fiddle made of solid gold, but should the Devil triumph, he gains Johnny's soul. Although he fears that taking the Devil's bet might be sinful, Johnny accepts the terms, proudly telling the Devil that the Devil will regret it as Johnny is "the best there's ever been". The duel commences, with the Devil performing a sinister and powerful piece with the backing of demon musicians. Despite this, the Devil is squarely defeated when Johnny takes his turn to perform. The Devil acknowledges being bested and, true to his word, the Devil presents Johnny with a beautiful golden fiddle. Johnny boastfully informs the Devil that he is welcome anytime to come back for a rematch.

The biopic of Johnny Cash, I Walk the Line, premiered in Toronto, ON in 2005.

In 2006, the place where the Beatles played their first concert, The Casbah Coffee Club in Liverpool, was giving protected status.

In 2008, Pink Floyd keyboard player and founder member Richard Wright died at age 65 from cancer. Wright appeared on the group's first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, in 1967 alongside Syd Barrett, Roger Waters and Nick Mason. Wright wrote a number of songs for the band in their early years, including "Paint Box", "Remember A Day" and "Summer '68" and also contributed prominent vocals to the band's 1971 classic, "Echoes". He will be remembered primarily for "The Great Gig In The Sky", his stately song on 1973's million-selling "Dark Side Of The Moon". David Gilmour, who joined the band at the start of 1968, said: “He was such a lovely, gentle, genuine man and will be missed terribly by so many who loved him.”

In 2010, the New York Parole Board released the transcript of Mark David Chapman's parole hearing in which he told the board that he had also considered killing either Johnny Carson or Elizabeth Taylor, but John Lennon was "top of the list" the day he gunned down the former Beatle. Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 12, 2011

DEAR JERRY: In an online auction, I spotted a 45 rpm single of “I've Been Everywhere,” by a fellow called Lucky Starr (Festival 205).

The seller admits to knowing nothing about this record, so I'm hoping you can answer my two questions about it.

Is this the same song as the big hit by Hank Snow? If so, which version is the original?

Finally, will you please list all the cities that Hank mentions? I've tried to write them down, but he sings them so fast, I can't catch them all.
—Frank Houseman, New Harmony, Ind.

DEAR FRANK: The first of many fascinating things about “I've Been Everywhere” is how long it took for its hit potential to be realized. Geoff Mack, an Australian songwriter, penned the tune in 1959, working these 93 Aussie towns into the lyrics:

Tullamore; Seymour; Lismore; Mooloolaba; Nambour; Maroochydore; Kilmore; Murwillumbah; Birdsville; Emmaville; Wallaville; Cunnamulla; Condamine; Strathpine; Proserpine; Ulladulla; Darwin; Gin Gin; Deniliquin; Muckadilla; Wallumbilla; Boggabilla; Kumbarilla.

Moree; Taree; Jerilderie; Bambaroo; Toowoomba; Gunnedah; Caringbah; Woolloomooloo; Dalveen; Tamborine; Engadine; Jindabyne; Lithgow; Casino; Brigalow; Narromine; Megalong; Wyong; Tuggerawong; Wanganella; Morella; Augathella; Brindabella.

Wollongong; Geelong; Kurrajong; Mullumbimby; Mittagong; Cooranbong; Grong Grong; Goondiwindi; Yarra Yarra; Bouindarra; Wallangarra; Turramurra; Boggabri; Gundagai; Narrabri; Tibooburra; Gulgong; Adelong; Billabong; Cabramatta; Parramatta; Wangaratta; Coolangatta.

Ettalong; Dandenong; Woodenbong; Ballarat; Canberra; Milperra; Unanderra; Captains Flat; Cloncurry; River Murray; Kurri Kurri; Girraween; Terrigal; Stockinbingal; Collaroy; Narrabeen; Bendigo; Dorrigo; Bangalow; Indooroopilly; Kirribilli; Yeerongpilly; Wollondilly.

After about three years on Mack's shelf, Festival recorded Lucky Starr's version. Released in May of 1962, it took just four weeks to dominate the Australian charts. It remained No. 1 into July, earned a Gold Record Award for sales in Australia, and became an international sensation that inspired localized versions in many other countries.

Festival themselves led the pack with a four-track EP (FX-10485), “Lucky's Been Everywhere,” containing his Australian original plus newly-recorded variations for Great Britain, New Zealand, and the U.S.

Another notable 1962 track, also tailored for the Brits, is by the Mudlarks. Their delightful take is lyrically different than Lucky Starr's (Decca/Ritz 11537).

Meanwhile in Nashville USA, RCA Victor, in August, issued Hank Snow's “I've Been Everywhere,” making the renowned Canadian the first with a North American single of “I've Been Everywhere.” It became a No. 1 C&W hit, and successfully crossed over to the pop market.

As for the U.S. version recorded Down Under by Lucky Starr, it did eventually come out here (Big Top 3123), but not until October. By then, the song was clearly owned by Hank Snow, whose version cites these same 92 locations as Lucky Starr's original:

Wimmumucka, Reno, Chicago, Fargo, Minnesota, Buffalo, Toronto, Winslow, Sarasota, Wichita, Tulsa, Ottawa, Oklahoma, Tampa, Panama, Mattawa, La Paloma, Bangor, Baltimore, Salvador, Amarillo, Tocopilla, Barranquilla, Padilla.

Boston, Charleston, Dayton, Louisiana, Washington, Houston, Kingston, Texarkana, Monterey, Ferriday, Santa Fe, Tallapoosa, Glen Rock, Black Rock, Little Rock, Oskaloosa, Tennessee, Hennessey, Chicopee, Spirit Lake, Grand Lake, Devils Lake, Crater Lake.

Louisville, Nashville, Knoxville, Ombabika, Schefferville, Jacksonville, Waterville, Costa Rica, Pittsfield, Springfield, Bakersfield, Shreveport, Hackensack, Cadillac, Fond du Lac, Davenport, Idaho, Jellico, Argentina, Diamantina, Pasadena, Catalina.

Pittsburgh, Parkersburg, Gravelbourg, Colorado, Ellensburg, Rexburg, Vicksburg, El Dorado, Larimore, Atmore, Haverstraw, Chattanooga, Chaska, Nebraska, Alaska, Opelika, Baraboo, Waterloo, Kalamazoo, Kansas City, Sioux City, Cedar City, Dodge City.

Just one year later, Dot Records gave Starr's U.S. “I've Been Everywhere” (45-16506) another shot. And again, Lucky was not lucky in the Northern Hemisphere.

Many singers worldwide have since personalized “I've Been Everywhere” to acknowledge their region's locations. A few among them are: Lynn Anderson (U.S.); Brian Burns (Texas); Hayes Carll (Houston); Johnny Cash (U.S.); Eugene Chadbourne (World); Stompin' Tom Connors (Ontario and the Maritimes); Michael Faubion (Alaska); Mike Ford (Canada); Jackie Leven (Germany); Lost Highwayknights (Belgium); Charles McGowan (Scotland); Earl Pickens (Pennsylvania); Simpsons (Springfield, of course); and Ladislav Vodicka (Czechoslovakia).

DEAR JERRY: As a Sue from Iowa, “Sioux City Sue” is a personal favorite, whether by Gene Autry, Bing Crosby, or many others I've heard along life's dusty trail.

Interestingly, every version I find contains the line “I'd swap my horse and dog for you, my sweet Sioux City Sue,” yet somewhere back in time I heard it by a man who sang “I'd swap my pig and dog for you.”

No one I ask has ever heard the pig version, and they think I'm either joking or dreaming. Help!
—Sue Jenson, Mason City, Iowa

DEAR MASON CITY SUE: With all the attention being paid to livestock, it seems appropriate to refer to “Sioux City Sue,” by Elton Britt, as the stray in the herd. He is the swine trader.

Elton's 1960 single (ABC-Paramount 10121) is the version wherein Sue's worth seemingly takes a hit. However, Britt offers pigs (plural), enough of which might trump a single horse.

Potential trades aside, I can't rank any version of “Sioux City Sue” above Elton Britt's.

IZ ZAT SO? A decade before Elton Britt's million-selling, World War II-inspired “There's a Star-Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere,” he sang, yodeled, and played with the Beverly Hill Billies.

This outfit, whose name is strikingly similar to a hit 1960s TV sitcom, made 11 singles for Brunswick between 1930 and '32.

A 1961 gold vinyl LP collection of these early tunes, titled “Those Fabulous Beverly Hill Billies (Rar-Arts 1000), now fetches $50 to $100.

Q&A with Alice Cooper on ‘Welcome 2 My Nightmare’

Justin Tedaldi, Music Q&A Examiner

A true entertainment legend, Alice Cooper is enjoying a banner year. In March he was finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after more than 15 years of eligibility, and today (Sept. 13) he unleashes Welcome 2 My Nightmare, his 26th studio effort and the sequel to the original platinum-selling concept album. Recorded in Nashville, the disc reunites Alice with Bob Ezrin, who produced the first Nightmare and all of Alice’s ’70s classics.

I spoke with Alice while he was in the studio of his worldwide syndicated radio show Nights with Alice Cooper to discuss the new album, his relationship with other artists he’s inspired like KISS and Marilyn Manson, and who he’d like to see inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year.

Gibson Makes 9/11 Anniversary Guitars for Charity

The factory workers at Gibson USA's Nashville plant personally recognized the 10th anniversary of the events of September 11th, 2001, by creating three very special guitars. Each of these Les Paul Traditionals feature a custom laser etching designed by Gibson’s top craftsmen. The luthiers started with one of Gibson’s famous Les Paul Traditionals with a gloss Ebony finish. They then created a line drawing for the unique artwork of each guitar that was then loaded into a computer controlled laser to create an engraving into the wood of the guitar body. This ensures that the artwork is a permanent part of the guitar, as opposed to simply being a part of the finish.

The first in this series of three is entitle, Never Forget. This guitar displays the Twin Towers standing prominently in the New York skyline. The second guitar in the series is entitled, Always Honor. It is a tribute from the employees of Gibson to those first responders who gave so much of themselves, including their lives, to protect others. The final guitar in the series is entitled, Forever Free. This guitar has a stunning representation of New York’s future skyline, with the Freedom Tower proudly standing tall.

The guitars will travel the USA this year, being played by a variety of artists, before being auctioned for charity on 9/11/12 to benefit families of 9/11 first responders.

TONY BENNETT BACK ON MTV AT 85 WITH "BODY AND SOUL" VIDEO WITH AMY WINEHOUSE

"Body and Soul" airing Hourly on MTV Networks This Morning with Prime-Time Encore at 7:30 pm ET Tonight

NEW YORK, Sept. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- "Body and Soul" is the final recording made by Winehouse before her passing on July 23rd of this year, and is released today to mark what would have been the singer's 28th birthday. The single and video of "Body and Soul," has also been released today worldwide on the iTunes Store to benefit The Amy Winehouse Foundation. The Winehouse family announced earlier this morning that they are creating a charitable body, The Amy Winehouse Foundation, to benefit young people around the world. The Foundation will raise money to support projects and charities that need help for specific causes. Tony and Amy's record labels, Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group, will donate royalties from the track to the foundation as well.

At the age of 85, Tony Bennett is back on MTV, the network that was largely responsible for introducing him to a whole new generation of fans when they aired his "Steppin' Out" video in 1993 on "MTV's Buzz Bin." Today, Bennett's video with Amy Winehouse of "Body And Soul," dominates MTV, VH1 and MTV U with a 6am ET premiere followed by hourly airings through 9 am ET. MTV will air an encore prime-time premiere at 7:30 pm ET tonight.

"Body and Soul' is one of 17 tracks included on Bennett's DUETS II CD, coming out Tuesday, September 20. Heralding in the iPod generation to his fanbase, in the same way decades ago Tony was embraced by the MTV Generation, the DUETS II project is one of the most highly anticipated CDs for the fall. DUETS II features a roster of celebrated artists--including Lady Gaga, Michael Buble, John Mayer, Aretha Franklin, Alejandro Sanz and Carrie Underwood--who joined Tony live in the studio to perform from his catalog of hits.

Bennett will be appearing on the finale of "America's Got Talent" tonight, performing with Queen Latifah their duet of "Who Can I Turn To," from the new CD. Bennett performs at a sold out show at the Metropolitan Opera this Sunday night and will be joined on stage by Elton John, Alejandro Sanz and Aretha Franklin. Appearances next week for the CD's launch include the Today Show, The View and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Between The Buried and Me Colors Repress

Between The Buried and Me’s long out of print album, “Colors” has been repressed on three colors; Purple, Orange and Clear w/ Smoke. The Clear w/ Smoke is the most limited with around 150 copies available. The orange is limited to about 300 and the purple around 750. You can order all three colors now here at Shop Radio Cast

BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME have built their reputation as one of hard rock’s most inventive and ambitious bands. Sharing a lineage with such luminaries as PINK FLOYD, KING CRIMSON and TOOL, they continue to explore new territory with a genuine passion to push themselves and their audience. They dream the impossible and they make it happen time and time again.

Looking at their hugely celebrated catalog, it’s exciting to see how far they’ve come and how deep they are willing to go. Venturing into each record is like exploring undiscovered country. From the progressive metal stomp of their self-titled debut, followed by the melancholy of The Silent Circus and then the claustrophobic Alaska, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME continue to evolve into a new pedigree that defies any categorization.

Colors, the band’s newest record, is a sonic labyrinth of grand proportion. It’s an organism completely in it's own class and at the nerve center is a band that encourages the listener to take the bold ride from beginning to end. The record is a continuous movement of savage metal, lush prog-rock and stimulating mood that morphs into some of the most forward thinking music today. Yet for a record that is so fierce and complex, it is also engaging and comfortable. It challenges the myths of what we expect from modern rock, demonstrating just how much potential there is in a band and the people who experience their craft.

Every other month, record collectors and dealers from all over Chicagoland come together in Hillside for the “Midwest’s largest vinyl show.” On average, the Chicagoland Record Collectors Show features 50-60 dealers that manage to fill 80 tables with vintage albums, 45’s and more. The overwhelming stock spans a range of genres including, Rock, Jazz, Soul, R & B, Country, Folk, Alternative and Metal. The show also takes a great deal of pride in its dealers. From their site:

New dealers are pre-screened and referenced before they are allowed to sell at the show. To ensure that you get the best quality of merchandise available at the show, no bootleg or counterfeit sales are allowed.”

Arthur helps collector ‘all shook up’ by theft

A KINGLASSIE man has helped a record collector from England who had his collection of vinyl records and music memorabilia stolen, reports KEVIN QUINN.

Arthur Fotheringham, a volunteer at the local radio station, K-Town FM, sent some rare records he had to Peter Johnson in St Albans- who had his collection of rare Elvis records stolen.

Peter Johnson discovered the theft late last year when he returned from the annual meeting of the Elvis Presley Fan Club in Maplethorpe, Lincolnshire.

Thousands of pounds worth of collectors items had been taken by the thieves who had picked the lock on his garage.

and in music history for today:

In 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics to the "Star-Spangled Banner." The song became the official US national anthem on March 3, 1931.

In 1962, Tamla Motown Records released Mary Wells' "You Beat Me To The Punch", The Marvelettes "Beachwood 4-5789" and The Contours' "Do You Love Me" on the Oriole / American label in the UK.

In 1963, The Beach Boys' "Surfer Girl," the first song ever written by Brian Wilson, peaked at #7 on the Billboard Pop chart. The single would achieve Gold Record status later in the year and reach #13 in the UK.

"45rpm SongFacts."

The song was first released on an album in 1963 on the band's Surfer Girl album.

The "Surfer Girl" single backed with "Little Deuce Coupe" was released under Capitol Records in the United States on July 22, 1963. The single entered the Billboard chart on August 3 and it would then hit the Top 40 on August 17 at the number 28 position. After the single had been on the charts for six weeks it peaked at number 7 on September 14, 1963. It placed at number 5, for three weeks, in Cash Box and number 3 in the UPI weekly survey used by newspapers. Its regional performances belie even these higher national peaks, having risen to #1 in playlists in Los Angeles (four weeks), San Francisco (six weeks), Philadelphia, Boston and Dallas—all major markets where it was among the very biggest hits that year; and runner-up or top three in Washington DC, Toronto, Montreal, Sacramento, Minneapolis, Columbus, Pittsburgh. The single also peaked in the U.S. Billboard R & B chart at number 18 in September 1963.

Although the song is sometimes referred to as a tribute to his then girlfriend Judy Bowles, this is untrue as the song wasn't written with anyone particular in mind

Brian explained the genesis of the song: "Back in 1961, I'd never written a song in my life. I was nineteen years old. And I put myself to the test in my car one day. I was actually driving to a hot dog stand, and I actually created a melody in my head without being able to hear it on a piano. I sang it to myself; I didn't even sing it out loud in the car. When I got home that day, I finished the song, wrote the bridge, put the harmonies together and called it 'Surfer Girl'."

The band first recorded the song at World Pacific Studios on February 8, 1962 which was one of the band's first ever recording sessions. However, the recordings from that session, engineered by Hite Morgan, would ultimately remain unreleased until later archival releases.

The instrumental track as well as the vocals for the officially released version were recorded at Western Recorders on June 12, 1963. The session was produced by Brian; the first song, along with "Little Deuce Coupe", to be credited as a Brian production. The musicians on the track are David Marks and Carl Wilson on guitar; Brian Wilson on bass guitar and Dennis Wilson on drums.

In 1968, the Chambers Brothers' "Time Has Come Today" entered Billboard's Hot 100, where it will climb to number eleven.

In 1968, "The Archies" premiered on CBS. The cartoon was based on the comic book series. The records that were credited to this make believe group were recorded by Ron Dante, Andy Kim, Jeff Barry and others. Their biggest hit would turn out to be a song called "Sugar, Sugar", that went to number one in 1969, selling over six million copies.

In 1968, Big Brother and the Holding Company's LP, "Cheap Thrills" entered the Billboard LP chart, where it will stay for 29 weeks, including 8 at #1.

In 1978, the Grateful Dead played at the foot of the Great Pyramid in Egypt.

In 1979, the film Quadrophenia was released. It was ased on The Who’s 1973 rock opera and the film featured Phil Daniels, Toyah Willcox, Ray Winstone, Michael Elphick and Sting.

Pink Floyd's movie "The Wall" began production in 1981.

At the first MTV Video Music Awards in 1984, Madonna performed her iconic hit "Like A Virgin" wearing a combination bustier/wedding gown, including her trademark "Boy Toy" belt. During the performance, she rolled around on the floor, revealing lacy stockings and garter. Cyndi Lauper spoke in "Exorcist-esque gibberish" to explain the VMA rules right before winning the Best Female video for "Girls Just Want to Have Fun."

In 1985, recording sessions for The Bangles' second album, "Different Light" wrap up at the Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood, California. The LP will produce the band's first of three Billboard number one hits, "Manic Monday" which was written by Prince under the pen-name Christopher.
