Sex Pistols To Reissue "God Save The Queen"

Punk legends the Sex Pistols have announced plans to reissue their controversial 1977 hit "God Save The Queen"on May 28th.

This marks the 35th Anniversary since the track first came out.  Originally released on May 27, 1977, during the Queen's Silver Jubilee, the cut made its mark in history. The BBC, among others, refused to play it and although it technically out-sold the Number One record of the week (Rod Stewart's 'I Don't Want To Talk About It'/'The First Cut Is The Deepest'), it peaked at Number Two in the singles chart.

The band have also announced that a limited edition 7" inch picture disc of their first ever single "Anarchy In The UK" will also be released on April 21 for Record Store Day.

Tom Petty Guitars Stolen During Tour Rehearsal

Five guitars belonging to Tom Petty were stolen from a soundstage in Culver City, CA where he and the Heartbreakers were rehearsing for an upcoming reunion. Petty is offering $7,500 for the return of the guitars and has promised it will be "no questions asked."
Stolen were:

With the advent of the MP3 and digital distribution, CD sales have plummeted and local stores have folded at an alarming rate. However, many local stores are now bouncing back after embracing the new demand for vinyl. Apart from brining customers into local stores, Record Store Day serves to highlight the growing rediscovery of vinyl records in contemporary culture. 

On April 21, Grand Rapids’ largest record distributor, Vertigo Music, celebrates the international Record Store Day with all-day music festivities. If the holiday sounds unfamiliar, it’s probably due to its recent advent. This year marks the 5th annual occurrence of the celebration, which was organized to observe the importance of the local record store in communities across the world. In the short time that the holiday has existed, it has become a centerpiece of music culture in cities throughout the US. In anticipation of the event, The Rapidian sat down with Vertigo Music’s general manager, Herm Baker, to discuss the changing face of music distribution, the continued relevance of independent music stores in contemporary culture, and the upcoming Record Store day celebrations at Vertigo Music.

Rush Reveal Album Cover Artwork, Track Listing for LP

Canadian prog-rock icons Rush have recently announced the details of their new album called 'Clockwork Angels.'  The album is slated for a June 12th release date via Roadrunner Records. The album's first single, "Headlong Flight," is supposed to be on the radio on April 19th.

The release is the veteran Toronto, ON native's 20th studio album to date and true to form, the LP follows an intricate story which centers on "a young man's quest across a lavish and colorful world of steampunk and alchemy as he attempts to follow his dreams."  The album is scheduled to be turned into a novel by writer Kevin J. Anderson later this year and he will work closely with the band's lyricist, drummer Neil Peart.

MISFITS Colored Vinyl Due On Record Store Day

Rhino will be offering three colored-vinyl versions of the MISFITS' LP 'Walk Among Us' to help commemorate the 30-year anniversary of the band's 1982 full-length classic. It is a faithful reproduction of the original with music cut from the original analog masters and packaging that duplicates details down to the printed inner sleeve.

Limited to 3,000 total copies in the United States, "Walk Among Us," the album will be pressed on red (1,250 pieces), blue (1,250 pieces) and clear (500) vinyl. Color variations will be distributed randomly. There will also be a purple vinyl pressing released internationally that will be limited to 1,500 copies.

DEAR JERRY: As a young girl, my folks gave me an album made so people could discover if they had any acting ability.

It came with an actual movie script, so I could deliver my lines while the record played the dialogue by the guest actor.

My album's guest star was Jimmy Rogers, but I don't recall anything about the scene he and I did together. Is he the only entertainer who made this type of recording?

My acting career began with that record some 50 years ago, and, unfortunately, ended about the same time. —Tiffany Shore, Pittsburgh


DEAR TIFFANY: I never got to hear your professional audition; however, you should have been a movie star just based on your snazzy name.

Jimmie Rodgers (note spelling) is just one of 15 celebrity co-stars featured on an LP in this series. Like Rodgers, each is ready to share a scene with anyone who plays the album and follows along with the script.

Titled “Co-Star (The Record Acting Game),” this atypical series was conceived by Ray Shaw, a well-known A&R (Artists & Repertoire) man; produced by the legendary Hugo (Peretti) & Luigi (Creatore); then released in mid-1958 on Roulette Records' new subsidiary, Co-Star Records.

Unlike most albums, available only from record retailers, the Co-Star series could also be found where toys and games were sold. They sold for $3.98, a top price for single-disc pop albums in 1958.

Now the 1958 issues are commonly found in the $25 to $50 range. Roulette reissued the complete series in 1977, and those are about half the price of the originals. Here is the complete Co-Star catalog, with featured guest actor and the program:

This format is identical to the many open-end interview records and tapes, frequently sent to dee jays. When properly presented, these give listeners the impression their local radio host is really talking to the celebrity.

Answers to assorted pre-determined questions are on the recording, and an accompanying script suggests the appropriate questions to lead into the reply. The record has enough dead air (silence) for the interviewer to phrase the question.

Here is a brief example of how this works:

Interviewer: The people here in (insert city) really go for your new record, (insert title). It's already one of our most requested tunes.

Recorded response by the “guest”: Thank you for saying that. We had a lot of fun recording it and it's great to know the folks here like it.

As for Jimmie Rodgers, he is far better known as a maker of hit songs than as an actor. But being Roulette's hottest recording artist in 1958 probably earned him a volume in the Co-Star series.

The same applies to Pearl Bailey, another singer in Roulette's stable at the time.

Unlike the other short stories in the series, those on the Rodgers and Bailey discs were originally written just for the Co-Star project.

IZ ZAT SO? Perhaps the Co-Star issue served Jimmie Rodgers well. Two years later, he nabbed the starring role in “The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come,” a 1961 release.

In addition to a couple more films, Jimmie twice had his own network TV variety show, in 1959 and again in 1969. One frequent guest on “The Jimmie Rodgers Show” (1959) was Connie Francis.

RONNIE MONTROSE Death Ruled A Suicide

According to Guitar Player, a report by the San Mateo County Coroner's Office, released on April 6, confirms legendary guitarist Ronnie Montrose died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The toxicology report also showed his blood-alcohol level at 0.31% when he died — almost four times the legal limit in California. No evidence of other drugs was found in his system.

The Montrose family posted the following statement on RonnieMontrose.com:

"By now, the devastating truth of Ronnie's death is public knowledge. We hope you can understand why we wanted to keep this news a private family matter for as long as possible. We can only hope that you will choose to celebrate Ronnie's life, and what his music meant to you, rather than mourn his passing. Ronnie would have wanted it that way. He loved being a guitarist, a composer, a producer, and a creator of magic. He fully understood his gifts, and yet he constantly pushed himself to evolve, improve, and make better music. He did this for himself, and he did this for you, because he adored and appreciated his fans. Please keep his energy, his joy, and his love in your hearts."

Adam Duritz Talks Counting Crows' Underwater Sunshine

After seeing the announcement that the first Counting Crows album in over four years was a covers album, the reaction around the web was somewhat tempered. A covers album is something that mainstream rock acts are supposed to put out to bide time between records. It’s not something that a band with a ridiculous amount of credibility, like Counting Crows, would do.

Once people really went through the set list of what was included on the band’s new album, Underwater Sunshine (Or What We Did On Our Summer Vacation), things clicked. This isn’t “The Joker” being covered for the ten thousandth time; these songs are Counting Crows recreations of great music that hasn’t been discovered by as many people as it should.

Adam Duritz of Counting Crows explained in an interview with Alternative Addiction, the very simple reason why the band wanted to do a covers album instead of a traditional Counting Crows album.

Queen at Top of Britain's All-Time Top Selling Albums, Adele Continues to Climb

As part of the celebration of the Bank Holiday in the U.K. on Monday, BBC2 brought in legendary DJ Tony Blackburn to count down the forty biggest selling albums of all-time.

The chart, compiled by Britain's Official Chart Company, is topped by Queen's Greatest Hits, which has sold 5.8 million copies since its release in 1981. Second is the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band with 5 million sold.

Beach House Reveal Album Details

Dream-pop duo Beach House have recently revealed the release date, the album cover art and tracklist for their new album 'Bloom.'  The effort is scheduled for release on May 15, 2012 via Sub Pop.

Doctor Who Sound Effects LPs Reissued On Vinyl
Two 1970s sound effects LPs are to be re-released on vinyl for Record Store Day.  In a collaboration between audiobook publisher AudioGo and Discovery Records, two albums full of spacey genius from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop will be available on vinyl from 21 April, complete with original sleeve artwork and liner notes.

“I get by because of the people who make a special effort to shop here – mostly young men – who spend all their time looking for deleted Smith singles and original, not re-released – underlined – Frank Zappa albums…I’d feel guilty taking their money, if I wasn’t… well… kinda one of them,” sarcastically jokes John Cusack’s character, Rob, in the movie High Fidelity. A movie that symbolically uses an independent record store as a life metaphor; an allusion so perfectly suited to the concept of Record Store Day, which is celebrating its fifth anniversary on April 21, 2012.

Record Store Day is an annual event celebrated around the world that brings together independently-owned record stores, artists, and audiophiles with in-store performances, extremely exclusive vinyl and CD releases, and a reclamation of that sense of community once cherished by music lovers who spent hours in their favorite store listening to albums.

With the resurgence of record appreciation, it seems that many music fans are looking for a more tangible representation of their sonic obsessions; vinyl, an artistic medium that generations of music lovers can share together and something different from the instant gratification of digital music. “I think that it’s a revolution to the digital revolution,” said Matt Vaughn, owner of Easy Street Records in Seattle.

The hiss and crackle of vinyl records are making a big comeback in Wales as music lovers buy the old fashioned discs in increasing numbers. High street music and video giant HMV has just refitted its stores in Swansea and Cardiff to accommodate vinyl seven-inch and LP records to keep up with the trend. And the Welsh stores are also selling retro-style record players on which a new generation of music purists are listening once again to sounds coming through grooves on big, spinning discs.

Vinyl was king in the 20th Century when it came to commercial music distribution but the downloading, digital age saw an end to all that. Until now.

Over the past two decades, with consumers increasingly choosing to purchase their music via digital outlets, countless independent records stores across the globe have been forced to throw up their shutters. Leslie Feist however, has a plan to stop this chain of events. "I'll wear armor and hold up a sword and stand out front of the independent record shops and just protect them," the Canadian singer/songwriter, 36, tells Rolling Stone.

Feist is hardly alone in her passion for independent record stores. Since the inception of Record Store Day in 2007, artists of all genres and backgrounds, from Paul McCartney to Wilco, and Phish to Pearl Jam, have helped contribute to the event – an international holiday that encourages music fans to visit their local brick-and-mortar music retailer – by dropping limited-edition, one-day-only releases made available exclusively at independent retailers.

What To Do With 960 Vinyl Records:

London-based directorial duo Us have released a promo video for dubstep producer Benga's latest single called "I will never change."

It says that each record was individually cut, labeled, and polished over seven working days to prepare for the video shoot. The production team then built the final sculpture, before removing each record one by one to create the animation (the process is reversed in the video).

Live & Inspired features fierce and furious live renditions of numerous hits from the Massachusetts rockers' five studio albums. Their incendiary and infectious shows have become legendary in modern rock, and they continue to impress both critics and audiences alike every time they hit the stage. The group sounds unchained on rousing performances of "Awake", "Keep Away", "Straight Out of Line", "Whatever", "Voodoo", and "I Stand Alone." This is the first time that's been captured on CD, and bonus tracks of covers that have "inspired"

GODSMACK is also going to be included along with it. The four tracks are quite close to the band's collective heart. The band started ripping through local Massachusetts haunts with their renditions of some of these songs, and these recordings bring everything full circle. About the collection, frontman Sully Erna reveals, "Live & Inspired is our way of saying 'Thank you' to all of our fans for believing in us throughout the years, and helping us to become a great live band! Along with this ass-whooping set live from Detroit Rock City, we've also included four cover songs of our favorite hits in the past to show you that, we too, are simply just fans that appreciate nothing more than good old fashion ass-kicking rock 'n' roll! Enjoy!" In addition, the quartet encouraged its legion of supporters to be a part of the release. The collection's packaging actually showcases a variety of fan photos. Fans may submit live snapshots of the group on stage, pictures of themselves rocking out at GODSMACK concerts, or photos of their tattoos of the group's iconic logo on the band's official Facebook. Now, the winning photos adorn the album's booklet and packaging. The album will hit shelves and digital retailers while the band is in the midst of its Mass Chaos Tour with Staind and Halestorm. The jaunt commences on April 13 in Augusta, GA at the James Brown Arena, and it promises to be a brilliantly bruising night of hard rock.

We explore how vinyl has once again taken a front seat in stores and in music fans' hearts. Plus, our picks for vinyl releases to look out for.

When visiting my neighborhood record store in recent years, I've breezed past the front of the shop — and most of the compact disc-browsing shoppers — to get where I wanted to be: the rows of vinyl in the back.

 Whether it was the warm perfection of freshly pressed 180-gram vinyl or the charming imperfection of a 30-year-old record that passed through countless hands, vinyl has been my reason for visiting record stores for close to a decade. Since the dawn of the MP3, if I want digital music, I download it. CDs need not apply.

Branford Marsalis To Release New Album On Vinyl

Branford Marsalis has revealed that his new album 'Four MFs Playin' Tunes' will be initially released on vinyl to celebrate Record Store Day on April 21st. The album,which features songs by the band as well as a Thelonious Monk cover and one early standard, is the first vinyl release for Marsalis Music.

The album will be made available on CD and for digital download on August 7th. Those who buy a vinyl copy of the album will also receive a download card that will allow purchasers to download the album when it is released August 7th.

Top 5 eBay Vinyl Record Sales - Week Ending 04/01/2012

And I talked about a trend last week. For the second week in a row a Butcher cover makes the list. I debated whether this counted. It's the sleeve only, but it does have the Perry Cox authentication. The last mono 1st state that sold with a Perry Cox authentication was in 2009 and did have the record. It sold for $7k. My favorite 45 of all, Mixed Feelings "Sha La La", showed up this week, selling for almost $2k less than its usual price. However, I'll talk about a possible reason for this on the show.
