Vinyl Reissue ‘History of the Grateful Dead Vol. 1 (Bear’s Choice)’

Audio Fidelity has announced a July 10th release date for the reissue, which will be pressed on 180-gram virgin vinyl and issued in a numbered limited edition.

"This is what The Grateful Dead sounded like at the close of the 1960's and the dawn of the 1970's."


History of the Grateful Dead, Volume One (Bear's Choice) consists of selections from two magnificent moments in the band's history, February 13-14, 1970 at the Fillmore East in New York City at a time they were still making the transition from acidic to countrified music and their live performances included tunes from every corner of the American pop songbook.

This 1973 release is the ninth album and the fourth live album by Grateful Dead and was compiled as a tribute to Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, the band's original keyboard player and blues aficionado, who died while the album was being prepared. The "Bear" of the title is Owsley Stanley, underground chemist turned Dead sound man. The album was recorded and produced by Stanley, and fans often simply refer to the album as "Bear's Choice".

The set consists of seven songs, six of them covers, the first five songs are stripped down acoustic numbers with a nice bluesy feel to them. The album's sole original composition, Jerry Garcia's, "Black Peter," is a masterfully executed beautiful tune that ends Side One. This second half of the record belongs to Pigpen and these last two tracks are stunning electric offerings - a 20-minute, crazy old truckin' blues cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Smokestack Lightnin'," and Otis Redding's "Hard to Handle" is a classic Dead hustling shuffle - Garcia is at his best, the vocal cooks and the band is tight and quick weaving their collective R&B-influenced psychedelia.

The record peaked at #60 on the Billboard 200 - it is perhaps the Dead's most rustic album. The band sounds genuinely informal, with impromptu stage chatter adding to the low-key ambiance...just like a bunch of guys hanging out and making great music.

Ten Years After 'A Space in Time' Vinyl Reissue

An appearance on the final night at Woodstock only reinforced the status of Ten Years After as one of Britain's premiere blues rock bands and they were at the height of their powers in 1971 when they released "A Space in Time". The record includes their classic rock hit, "I'd Love to Change the World" - with guitar riffs that must be included among the greatest in Rock'n'Roll history - the album went on to be their all-time best seller.

Guitarist and vocalist Alvin Lee provides exceptional blues leads and the majority of the songwritingalong with band mates, Chick Churchill on keyboards, Leo Lyons, bass and drummer, Ric Lee. "A Space in Time" is a mature work, more restrained than the band's previous albums primarily because of the liberal use of tasty acoustic guitar and plenty of sound effects and studio tricks that complement the overall texture...and it really works. There's still Alvin Lee's lightning quick blues licks, but he also knew how to slow it down on the quieter tracks as well as write some powerfull tunes ranging from the folky "Here They Come" to the Chuck Berry-influenced, "Baby Won’t You Let Me Rock and Roll You" and "Let the Sky Fall" is a standout track with psychedelic vocals reminiscent of Jimi Henrix.

Alvin Lee has said "A Space in Time" is his favorite album...some would call it a masterpiece of rock.

Bryan Adams 'Waking Up the Neighbours' Vinyl Reissue

"...a classic album filled with old-fashioned, good time rock & roll"

Bryan Adams' sixth studio album, 1991's, Waking Up the Neighbours is filled with big rockers, solid rhythms, and unique songwriting. The nearly 75 minute two-record set is loaded with showstopping arena rockers and mid-tempo ballads including five hit singles. The most notable track is the Robin Hood Prince of Thieves theme "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" which spent seven weeks atop the US pop charts. The song was also a phenomenon in Europe, becoming Bryans' biggest hit ever topping the charts in 16 countries and selling about 10 million copies worldwide and is one of the biggest selling singles of all time. The song was nominated for an Academy Award and won a Grammy Award in 1992 for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture or Television.

Other singles which followed included the rockin' "Can't Stop This Thing We Started," which became a number two hit, the mid-tempo ballads "Do I Have to Say the Words" and "Thought I'd Died and Gone to Heaven," and the fun, straight-ahead rocker "There Will Never Be Another Tonight." Adams co-produced the album with Robert "Mutt" Lange previously known for his work with AC/DC, Foreigner and Def Leppard.

Case Vinyl EP

We're very pleased to be releasing four brand new songs on this EP by the recently reformed CASE. Following on from their compilation album from last year which brought together all their original early recordings. It's limited to 500 copies on white vinyl.

CASE formed in Croydon in 1979 after being introduced to each other by Slimy Toad from Johnny Moped. Case played the pubs of south London and finally released their one and only 7", the ‘Wheat From The Chaff’ EP in 1983, it reached the top of the independent charts and led to them being played heavily on BBC radio including plays by John Peel, Janice Long & Kid Jensen.

Originally, in 1980, CASE played primarily at a (fairly rough) pub in North Croydon, called "The Star" and built quite a following there before larger, occasionally more salubrious, venues beckoned. They famously played at The Rainbow in November 1981 - where smoke flares and buckets of maggots flew into the crowd as the band played, the Marquee Club (where they were banned for playing an encore – the only band to be banned for this since the Rolling Stones), Hammersmith Palais, 100 Club, the BBC Paris Theatre, ICA, & the Woolwich Tram Shed (and Chislehurst Caves!) amongst other less-prestigious venues.

With better management who knows where CASE may have ended up – as it is - they retain a legendary status among the legions of punk/ska fans...and graffiti historians.

Back in 1981 case had a vociferous and die-hard following who, in substantial numbers, took to daubing the walls with graffiti championing their support for the band. These expressions of support for the band are now the stuff of social commentary – see, for example, the New Cross item at transpont.blogspot.com.

Something about CASE seemed to attract fanatical fans, several claiming to have seen every gig, since the early days in Croydon, and one in particular who, whilst working in London, spent his lunchtimes visiting public toilets all over the city - unrolling the rolls of toilet paper and writing CASE on each sheet on the roll, with a biro, before rolling them up again. These were strange times.

Lynyrd Skynyrd Reveal Cover Art And Tracklist For New LP

Lynyrd Skynyrd are set to release their new album called 'Last Of A Dyin' Breed' on August 21st via Loud & Proud/Roadrunner Records. The effort features 11 brand new songs, and is the band’s first studio album since the 2009 release of 'God & Guns,' which reunites the band with producer Bob Marlette. The album is also Skynyrd’s first recording to feature new bassist Johnny Colt, who was an original member of the Black Crowes.

According to Amazon.com, a special edition also will be available with four extra songs. 'Last of a Dyin’ Breed‘s' lead single and title track is set for release July 10 as a digital download.

Reissue Of KISS' 'Destroyer' Due In August

The release of the deluxe 35th-anniversary edition of KISS' iconic fourth LP 'Destroyer' is set for August 21 through Universal Music. The two-disc set, called 'Destroyer/Resurrected' is said to feature remixes of the original LP by producer Bob Ezrin and out takes from the 1976 album sessions. Released in March 1976, the effort was the second consecutive KISS album to reach the Top 20 in the United States. The LP was certified gold by the RIAA on April 22, 1976 and was certified platinum on November 11, 1976, the first KISS album to achieve that distinction.

Two Posthumous Amy Winehouse Albums In The Works

Mitch Winehouse has recently revealed that there are plans to release two more posthumous albums by late songstress Amy Winehouse. In an interview with BBC 6 Music, the late singer's father stated that there was more unreleased material which wasn't used on last year's 'Lioness: Hidden Treasures' collection, but insisted he didn’t want to disappoint his daughter's fans.

"I'm not sure that there is much more but I'm sure that we will get at least one other album out, if not two. There are loads of covers, loads of them, but the problem is we don't want want to rip anybody off. When her fans are so precious to us we don’t want to put out dross."

Jack White Confirms Radiohead Recorded New Music At Third Man Records

Jack White has recently confirmed that Radiohead have been recording new material at Third Man Records. Speaking to BBC 6 Music, the White revealed that the Oxford band had been working in the studio owned by his record label, however, he insisted that he hadn't been involved in the recording sessions.

Thom Yorke dropped a mysterious hint from the stage during the band's set at the Bonnaroo Music And Arts Festival in Tennessee, suggesting that he and White had some exciting plans in the pipeline.

His comments sparked rumours that Radiohead and White would be working together on a new project, but the former White Stripes man said: "I don’t know how much to tell about it except I didn't play with them or produce."

Def Leppard Set To Re-Record Back Catalogue

Def Leppard have said that they plan to re-record their entire back catalogue. The rockers are making this extrordinary move following a disagreement with their one time record label Universal over royalties and compensation for digital downloads. The band's frontman Joe Elliott told Billboard that the disagreement has led to the band deciding to phase out their recordings for Universal and replace them with a whole new collection of their songs, which they're calling 'forgeries'. "We'll just replace our back catalogue with brand new, exact same versions of what we did," he said.

In order to coincide with the release of the movie Rock of Ages, the band have already re-recorded their 1983 song "Rock of Ages" and 1987's "Pour Some Sugar on Me."

Pet Shop Boys New Album Due In September

The Pet Shop Boys' new album called 'Elysium' is scheduled for release on September 18th via Astralwerks. The album's first single "Winner" will be available on limited CD (with 3 bonus tracks), limited 12" vinyl and as 2 digital bundles (including bonus tracks and remixes) on August 7th. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe recorded 'Elysium' earlier this year in Los Angeles,. The team also co-produced the effort with producer Andrew Dawson, who has won three Grammys for his work with Kanye West. He told Idolator.com: They've [Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe] never done a record in Los Angeles before. They wanted to be around that thing, and get that classic LA sound – the LA players and all that stuff"

Pet Shop Boys said: "It was inspiring to make an album in Los Angeles, and to work with a producer from a different musical genre, who has brought a new dimension to our music".

Rob Zombie Unveils Cover Art Remix Album

On August 7th Rob Zombie is set to release 'Mondo Sex Head,' a remix album featuring artists such as J-Devil (Korn‘s Jonathan Davis), ††† (which features Chino from Deftones and members of Far), and more. To promote the release, Zombie has released the album cover art for the album. The USA version features the face of a kitten while the cover for the rest of the world features his wife Sheri Moon Zombie bare assed and provocatively posed. I have taken the liberty to post both covers.

Zombie will also be releasing two separate, digital-only EPs before the album comes out. These EPs will features tracks from the album as well as bonus tracks.

DEAR JERRY: I was flabbergasted to read about when the Grammys avoided rock like the plague.

When their Best Rock & Roll Recording (1962) went to Bent Fabric's "Alley Cat," instead of "The Twist," and the Best Rock & Roll Vocal Group (1965) was the Statler Brothers, I almost busted a gut laughing.

Your examples covered three years, but there must be more to this story.

Also, when did they finally add a separate Rock & Roll category?

DEAR WILL: The only way to do justice to this topic is to begin at the beginning, 64 years ago:

1958: The Record of the Year was Domenico Modugno's "Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare)." Not a bad choice, but "At the Hop" (Danny and the Juniors), a R&R classic, would have been my pick.

The only rock act to win anything was the Champs, though both they and "Tequlia" were improperly categorized. This rock instrumental garnered a Best Rhythm & Blues Performance Grammy.

Perhaps the nominating committee never saw a photo of the Champs.

This R&B award should have gone to "Lonely Teardrops" (Jackie Wilson), and the Champs belonged with Duane Eddy and Link Wray in a category for rock instrumentalists.

However, since '58 was the Academy's first year, let's give them a mulligan.

1959: Record of the Year was Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife," and they got that one right. Still, Darin's tune dominated the record world in 1959, and should have also been Best Male Vocal Performance, instead of "Come Fly with Me" (Frank Sinatra), and Best Performance By a Top 40 Artist, instead of "Midnight Flyer" (Nat King Cole).

Unfortunately, none of the 34 awards that year went to anything considered rock and roll, or teen-oriented. The most important and top-selling genre of the past five years, yet in Grammyville it simply doesn't exist.

1960: "Theme from A Summer Place" (Percy Faith's Orchestra) rightfully claims Record of the Year.

That year's No. 2 hit, "It's Now Or Never" (Elvis Presley) should have been Best Performance on a Pop Single, but that went to "Georgia on My Mind" (Ray Charles), which should have been Best R&B Performance instead of Ray's "Let the Good

Times Roll." This comparatively obscure B-side never even made the R&B charts!

Even with five more categories (39) this year, none include the word "rock." There are 11 different classical and jazz awards, including one with an absurd name used in 1960 and never again: Best Jazz Composition of More Than Five Minutes Duration. They quickly (1961) renamed this category Best Original Jazz Composition.

1961: "Moon River," Henry Mancini's magnum opus, deserved and won Song of the Year. But it was also Record of the Year, a pick that clearly should have gone to Bobby Lewis for "Tossin' and Turnin'."

This is the year the Academy finally added a Best Rock & Roll Recording category, but it's just one of their 40 total Since they missed "Tossin' and Turnin'" for Record of the Year, you'd think it would have been the hands down choice for Best Rock & Roll Recording.

You would think.

Inexplicably, the voters selected "Let's Twist Again," a nice hit for Chubby Checker, but one that barely made the Top 10 — and did not even rank in the Cash Box Top 60 for the year.

"The Twist," the only record to top the charts in two different years, was also among the five biggest hits of 1960, and then the No. 1 hit of 1962, yet never won a Grammy.

In 2000, a mere 40 years after its original release, "The Twist" did receive a Grammy Hall of Fame invitation.

For the next few years, voters continued to demonstrate a serious misunderstanding of what qualified as a Best Rock & Roll Recording:

1962: Winner was "Alley Cat," but should have been "The Twist"

1963: Winner was "Deep Purple" (Nino & April), but should have been "Sugar Shack" (Jimmy Gilmer)

1964: Winner was "Downtown" (Petula Clark), but should have been "I Want to Hold Your Hand" (Beatles)

For 1965, the rock category was expanded to Best Contemporary (R&R) Performance, with separate awards for Single, Male, Female, and Group.

1965 (Single): Winner was "King of the Road" (Roger Miller), but should have been "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (Rolling Stones)

1965 (Male): Winner was "King of the Road" (Roger Miller), but should have been "Like a Rolling Stone" (Bob Dylan)

1965 (Female): Winner was and but should have been "I Know a Place" (Petula Clark)

1965 (Group): Winner was "Flowers on the Wall " (Statler Brothers), but should have been "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (Rolling Stones)

The significant changes for 1966 are Best Contemporary (R&R) Performance for a Single becomes Best Contemporary (R&R) Recording, and, after one year of separation, Males and Females are again combined.

1966 (Recording): "Winchester Cathedral" (New Vaudeville Band), but should have been "I'm a Believer" (Monkees)

1966 (Male or Female Solo): Winner was Paul McCartney for "Eleanor Rigby," which is by a group (Beatles) and is NOT a McCartney solo release. Truly a mindless choice. Should have been "Sunny" (Bobby Hebb)

1966 (Group): Winner was "Monday, Monday" (Mamas & Papas), but should have been "I'm a Believer" (Monkees)

For the next 11 years, neither "Rock" nor "R&R" appeared in any award category, though some R&R was tossed in with the Pop stuff. In 1979, variations of "Best Rock" awards returned for good.



IZ ZAT SO? Here are a couple of interesting streaks when it was all of one and none of the other:

On Billboard's Top 100, for 69 consecutive weeks — Sept. 15, 1956 (Platters, "My Prayer") through Jan. 6, 1958 (Danny and the Juniors, "At the Hop") — not one No. 1 hit was by group.

Then, for 33 straight weeks — Feb. 6 (Petula Clark, "Downtown") through Sept. 24, 1965 (Barry McGuire, "Eve of Destruction") — no solo artists held the No. 1 position.

The King Blues 'Long Live The Struggle' Out Today

The news earlier this spring that The King Blues had disbanded sent ripples of confusion through the industry and created no small amount of distress among the group’s fans. Within minutes of the announcement, the news had trended world wide on Twitter and appeared on hundreds of social networking platforms and websites. Every platform from Radio 1 to The Guardian bemoaned the band’s passing and asked simply, why?

While the band’s demise is quite clearly a tragedy for music (who else fused the melodic touch of Bob Marley with the polemic of Joe Strummer?), the one ray of hope is that the band who went from week night support slots at Camden’s Purple Turtle to selling out the Roundhouse (also in Camden for all you geography nuts) have left us with quite possibly their finest work to date.

Long Live The Struggle released on 2 July through Transmission Recordings is the follow up to 2011’s critically acclaimed Punk & Poetry album and is a giant step forward in terms of the band’s sound, song writing and general approach. And while it retains the characteristics that have made The King Blues one of the most vital bands to come out of the UK in many a year, there is a newfound maturity and depth.

Tracks such as ‘We Are The Future’ and ‘Modern Life Has Let Me Down’ (released as a free download in May) still scream like the King Blues of old. Frontman Itch Fox spits out his lyrics with an anger last heard on early Rage Against  The Machine albums. Lines such as Remind yourself your tie is not a noose and You can take this job and shove it are certainly not the musings of a man content with his or indeed, society’s lot. Elsewhere however, there are gentler, subtler outings such as ‘Walking Away’, ‘Tear Us Apart’ and the tearjerker, ‘Wasted Words’.

Part of this more mature sound is in part down to the efforts of producer John Feldmann. The LA-based sonic arranger who has brought his magic touch to artists such as Good Charlotte, The Used and Panic! At The Disco among others, had been eager to work with the band for a number of years. His keenness is evident throughout Long Live The Struggle, employing different genres and musical textures throughout its 12 tracks. There are special guests on the record too. ‘Can’t Bring Me Down’ features Jason Butler, while Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong guests on ‘Booted Out of Hell’.

Even posthumously the King Blues still do what they always did best: producing a rallying cry that sounds neither pompous nor judgemental. This time they’ve gone and done it with a bit more flair. They were never going to go out with a whimper, let’s face it.

The King is dead. Long live the King Blues. And the struggle.

No Doubt Reveals New Single Cover Art

No Doubt recently revealed the super colorful cover art for "Settle Down," which is the debut single off their new album 'Push and Shove,' which is scheduled for release via Interscope Records on September 25th.

"Settle Down" will be released July 16th with the video premiering the same day. The band shot the video for "Settle Down" in Los Angeles with their longtime friend and collaborator Sophie Muller. Sophie has been behind the lens for many of No Doubt’s music videos including "Don’t Speak," "Underneath It All," "Sunday Morning" and "Simple Kind of Life." Also featured on the album is a collaboration with Major Lazer on the title track.

No Doubt will kick off the launch of new single "Settle Down" with a string of television appearances beginning July 22nd at the Teen Choice 2012 Awards. Then the band will visit Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on July 26th and follow that up with a performance at Good Morning America’s Summer Concert Series on July 27th.

They Might Be Giants

Columbia has reissued the Band of Horses album, “Infinite Arms” on 180 Gram vinyl which is due out on July 3rd. This album has been out of print for some time now!

"Band of Horses have left Sub Pop and arrived at Ben Bridwell's Brown (and Fat Possum/Columbia) for their new album Infinite Arms. Visually, though, they haven't strayed too far from Cease to Begin's nightscape. There's less water and more mountainous swirls, but like the previous cover image, the sky was captured by photographer Christopher Wilson. The band produced Infinite with help from Phil Ek. It was recorded over sixteen months in various locations featuring a beefed-up lineup that includes the core of Ben Bridwell, Creighton Barrett, and Ryan Monroe with longtime touring members Tyler Ramsey and Bill Reynolds providing additional hands. As a nod to the new lineup, Bridwell is quoted as saying 'in many ways, this is the first Band of Horses record.' But we know it's actually their third." - Stereogum

KISS To Release New Album In October

KISS are set to release their 20th studio album, 'Monster,' in October. There are 12 tracks in all, which are collaborations between co-founders Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, with guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer.  The effort was produced by Paul Stanley with Greg Collins at Conway Studios in Hollywood and The Nook in Studio City, California.

On July 2, “Hell or Hallelujah” will be available as a digital single and gets a physical release the next day.

Stanley says it is “a battle cry that encapsulates the entire record... one way or another, we’re going to do it our way.”  “There are no symphony orchestras, boy choirs, keyboards, outside producers or songwriters on this album,” promises Gene Simmons. “The best thing we did was to turn inwards to ourselves. Tommy [Thayer] and Eric [Singer] have revitalized this band, with a work ethic and the talent to back it up. This is a real band effort. KISS has become a behemoth. We’re going where no bands have gone before.”

The Vaccines Reveal Tracklist and Album Cover Art

The Vaccines have revealed the tracklist and cover artwork for their upcoming second album 'The Vaccines Come Of Age,' which is scheduled for release on September 3. The album has been produced by Ethan Johns.

Speaking to NME about the album, the band's singer Justin Young has said: "I don't think there's any danger of us making the same record twice. But I think anything people found attractive about us the first time round has been retained. I'm really confident we've got the balance right."

On September 11, RCA Records is set to release Dave Matthews Band’s new effort called 'Away From The World,' which the group recorded with Steve Lillywhite, who produced its first three studio albums.

Deluxe versions of the CD and digital editions – containing three exclusive new live tracks – will also be available. Van Morrison Announces New Album

The legendary Van Morrison is returning to Blue Note Records for a new studio album ‘Born To Sing: No Plan B’ which will be released on October 2. Morrison previously released the Grammy-nominated ‘What’s Wrong With This Picture’ on Blue Note in 2003.

Van says: "With most record companies being so corporate I am happy to be working with Don Was and the team at Blue Note. To have such a creative music person as the head of my recording label assures me that all the effort to write and record this new album will be rewarded with a music-based focus and marketing effort.
