Singer-Songwriter Blake Ian to Release 270 Limited Edition 7” Copies of His Single “Play The King”

Featuring Original Artwork by Renowned Pop Artist Peter Tunney

The complementary worlds of modern art lovers, music enthusiasts and vinyl collectors will collide at Peter Tunney’s Manhattan gallery at 70 Franklin Street on October 24 starting at 7:00 PM. Long time friends and collaborators Blake Ian and Peter Tunney will be showcasing and selling a limited run of 270 copies of Ian’s single “Play The King” on 7” vinyl featuring original artwork numbered and signed by Tunney.

“I’m as much a fan of PT as I am of the great American songwriters like Bob Dylan and Elliott Smith. It’s a privilege to share his work with my fans,” says Ian.

The relationship between the two actually began a few years ago.   Ian released five digital singles varying in genre and production through his label 27 Productions at that time.  All of them featured collaborations with artists, known producers and accomplished musicians, including “Play The King.” Tunney then created original cover art for the song inspired by the Velvet Underground and Warhol.

“I have the original piece in my studio… It’s not for sale!,” laughs Ian.

The mutual respect for each other’s work and a shared love of vinyl is what brought forth this night.
Ian will also be conducting a special live performance that evening for attendees and gallery patrons while Tunney autographs purchased pieces.

Blake Ian has been visible in the NYC folk rock scene for the some time now. He’s released three full-length albums: The Blake Ian Theory (2000), The Basement Waves (2003) and Alchemist (2005). He has toured the country and opened for Donovan, Kenny Loggins, Eric Burdon and The Animals, Leon Russell, Duncan Sheik, Jeffrey Gaines and Christopher Cross. He is a producer as well. He has a hand in virtually every aspect of all of the songwriters’ works that he releases through his own label 27 Productions.

Peter Tunney has become THE name in NYC pop art in recent years from his Franklin Street factory downtown to his Miami gallery in the center of Graffiti Park which has been a centerpiece at Art Basel. His work is up for auction at the elite Phillips de Pury & Company along side the works of Warhol, Basquiat and other kings of modern art. Three of his pieces now stand as massive billboards along the highways in and out of Manhattan. Tunney collectors include Jay-Z, Olivia Wilde and Kid Rock.

Manic Street Preachers 'Generation Terrorists' Reissue

Manic Street Preachers have confirmed the reissue their 1992 debut 'Generation Terrorists'.

The 18 track LP is being rereleased on November 5th to celebrate the record's 20th anniversary.  It will come in five different formats including a re-mastered single CD, a download version, plus two different special edition versions featuring unheard exclusive songs and demos, unseen film footage, home movies and unique artwork.

The first edition entitled the 'Legacy Edition' will come with two CDs plus a DVD while the 'Limited Collector's Edition' spans three CDs, a DVD, a book and a 10 inch vinyl release. Finally a special 12 inch double vinyl gatefold LP will also be released.

Ann Peebles was the lead female vocalist signed to Willie Mitchell’s Hi Records label. Mitchell is more associated with signing the inimitable Al Green to his label and went on to produce many of Green’s signature hits. Willie was noted to use the Hi sound to his artists-organ fills, an outstanding horn section, and a steady drum beat.

All of these were provided to Ann Peebles back in 1973. Ann is most known for a sultry Southern voice and had her biggest hit with “I Can’t Stop the Rain.” The English audiophile label PurePleasure has used the services of legendary re-mastering engineer, Kevin Gray, to work his magic on Peebles’ signature LP. This record is filled with songs regarding the heartbreak of love. Backed by Mitchell’s use of horns and strings that made Al Green’s career, Peebles lets it all hang out, and with an audiophile upgrade, we get the benefit of Pebbles in her prime.

The album opens with the title cut. Peebles has a voice that can reach a falsetto peak. Backed by a drum beat that is in perfect 4/4 beat, and a punchy horn section, you can immediately tell why it worked so well for Al Green. “Do I Need You?” has Ann wonder why she should waste her time on a suitor and she reprises the title track’s refrain.

“Until You Came Into My Life” has sweet strings and is a ballad that Green would have eaten up. The background singers signify and Peebles hits the high notes, as her mood brightens. “Hangin’ On” brings the church into the romantic side of life, and you can imagine the Staple Singers singing this sweet song on the gospel circuit. It has one of the best arrangements on the LP. “Run, Run, Run” brings betrayal back into the mix as Side 1 ends with a great horn arrangement.

“If We Can’t Trust Each Other” brings trust out as the primary requirement for love to last. Howard Grimes’ drum beat is as steady as a Rolex, and the horns and strings sweeten the mood in counterpoint to the lyrics. “A Love Vibration” benefits from the background vocals and the sound mix perfected by Kevin Gray would be hard to match on CD.

“You Got to Feed the Fire” (to make the flame of love go higher) says it all on the next song. The warm strings belie the emotion of anger expressed in “I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down.” Room by room, says Ann, and you know she means it…

“One Way Street” ends this classic album filled full of the pitfalls of love’s challenges. I Can’t Stand the Rain is classic Southern soul made possible by a master producer, Willie Mitchell. Motown back in the day featured bouncy lightweight catchy melodies. Hi Records, out of Memphis—like its counterpart Stax Records—dealt with the more realistic, gritty side of love.

Both are classic soul.

Ann Peebles is still with us. PurePleasure keeps her in her prime with magnificent sound. If Al Green is your chief male soul crooner, let Ann Peebles into your life…

Led Zeppelin - Celebration Day

Audio And Video From Legendary 2007 Concert To Be Available In Multiple Configurations On November 19

Concert Slated For Global Theatrical Release On October 17

(Los Angeles, Sept. 13, 2012) – On December 10, 2007, Led Zeppelin took the stage at London’s O2 Arena to headline a tribute concert for dear friend and Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. What followed was a two-hour-plus tour de force of the band’s signature blues-infused rock ’n’ roll that instantly became part of the legend of Led Zeppelin. Founding members John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were joined by Jason Bonham, the son of their late drummer John Bonham, to perform 16 songs from their celebrated catalog including landmark tracks "Whole Lotta Love," "Rock And Roll," "Kashmir,"and "Stairway To Heaven."

Although 20 million people applied for tickets, the band’s first headline show in 27 years was seen only by the 18,000 ticket holders who were fortunate enough to have secured seats through the worldwide lottery.

The film of Celebration Day will see a worldwide theatrical release by Omniverse Vision on 1,500 screens in over 40 territories on October 17. The theatrical screenings will follow premieres in London, Los Angeles, New York, and other major cities. Tickets for the public screenings will be available on September 13 via www.ledzeppelin.com.

Celebration Day will then be available in multiple video and audio formats on November 19 from Swan Song/Atlantic Records. Specific product details will be announced soon.

GLENN HUGHES And DAVID COVERDALE To Commemorate 40th Anniversary Of DEEP PURPLE's 'Burn'?

Former DEEP PURPLE bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes tells CBS Local that he has been in touch with the band's ex-lead singer, David Coverdale, about doing something special to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the "Burn" album. He says, "David and I have talked about this weekly since [former DEEP PURPLE keyboardist] Jon [Lord] died [in July]. How we can do something to keep the flame burning. But we don't want to hinder the heritage of the band. Some bands get back together and sound bloody awful. It's the 40th anniversary of 'Burn' next year. I'm not giving you a hint to something that's gonna happen, but you just never know."

DEAR JERRY: Now that Blake Shelton, with "Over," and his wife Miranda Lambert, with "Fastest Girl in Town," are both on the Billboard singles chart, a new question has arisen.

How common is it to find both husband and wife on either the pop or country charts at the same time? I doubt Blake and Miranda are the first.

After an exhaustive online search, I can tell you this information does not exist. I think you're on your own.

Even less likely would be three different hits at the same time, one by each person and a third with them together. Has that ever happened?

The group's second full-length studio album for Legacy, Fanatic premieres 10 new essential performances from sisters Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson on songs including "Fanatic," "Dear Old America," "Walkin' Good" (featuring Sarah McLachlan), "Skin and Bones," "Million Miles," "Pennsylvania," "Mashallah," "Rock Deep (Vancouver)," "59 Crunch," and "Corduroy Road."

The first album of new music from Ann and Nancy Wilson since 2010's Red Velvet Car had its Top 10 debut in 2010,Fanatic was recorded in hotel rooms and studios up and down the West Coast, with Grammy-winning producer Ben Mink back at the helm with the Wilson sisters drawing from their own lives and personal experiences as inspiration for their music. "Dear Old America" comes from memories of a military household and is written from the point of view of their father, a Marine Corps officer, returning from war ("When I get home, I'm going to own this town/Shine this medal/Wear that crown…."); "Rock Deep (Vancouver)" harkens back to the city where Dreamboat Annie was written; and "Walkin' Good" (a duet with Vancouver resident Sarah McLachlan) captures the joy of finding new life in a new love.

Released in 2010, Fanatic's predecessor, Red Velvet Car (the first new studio album in six years from the groundbreaking Seattle-based band) entered the Billboard 200 best-selling album charts at #10, becoming the seventh Top 10 album of Heart's career. Ann Wilson and her younger sister, Nancy Wilson, first showed the world that women can rock when their band Heart stormed the charts in the '70s with hits like "Crazy on You," "Magic Man," "Barracuda," "Straight On," "Even It Up," "Kick It Out" and many more. Not only did the Wilson sisters lead the band, they wrote the songs and played the instruments, making them the first women in rock to do so. Heart continued topping the charts through the '80s and into the '90s with huge hits like "These Dreams," "Alone," "Never," and a string of other hits that showcased the sisters' enormous talents as both musicians and singers. Along the way, Heart sold more than 35 million records, had 21 top 40 hits, sold out arenas worldwide, and profoundly influenced the sound and direction of American rock music while inspiring women (and guys too!) around the world to rock out in bands of their own.

Heart were 2008 recipients of VH1 Rock Honors, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Northwest Grammy Foundation, and received ASCAP's award for Excellence in Songwriting in 2009.

Can Vinyl Last Forever? - Tips On The Care Of Vinyl Records

 

 

 

Ahhh, the sweet sound of a vinyl record playing your favorite music. Some say that there is no better way to listen to their music. Yes, vinyl records have made a triumphant return to the music arena, with sales over the last few years on a steady increase.

However, opponents of the format may point to the delicate nature of vinyl, records do require due diligence and upkeep in order to keep them sounding their best. But if you maintain a vigilant ritual, vinyl records can last many decades, so the records that you own right now can conceivably be passed down through generations of music lovers. And the bonus for properly maintaining your records is enjoying a crisp, clear playback each time you spin your turntable.

Let's explore some relatively easy ways to properly care and maintain vinyl records so they can be listened to and enjoyed and also to help preserve their resale value for years to come:

Never touch the grooves

When handling records, treat them with loving care, hold them with two hands around the outer edges of the record; never allowing your fingers to touch the grooves. A simple method to alleviate this potential problem area would be to invest in some disposable plastic "deli" gloves, like the ones used in food preparation. Then, one can easily manipulate the record playing process and take the fear out of handling records.

Know the enemies of vinyl

The environment in which your records are stored is very important to a long shelf life. If you want a long shelf life for your prized recordings, keep the records away from dirt, dust, smoke, fingerprints, and oils from human skin as well as faulty phonograph needles. Never stack your records on top of each other, albums should be stored vertically. Avoid storing them too tight as it can lead to ring wear on the cover or sleeve and cause unnecessary stress to the record's materials, surface and label, often resulting in warps and contact damage. Additionally, the records should be stored in a low humidity setting with a temperature between 60 and 70 degrees if possible. Obviously, it is imperative to keep your treasured vinyl away form heat sources such as sunlight, heater vents and even lighting. Avoid dusty environments and if possible store the records in a relatively airtight container such as a cabinet with doors or sealable boxes or bins.

Protecting your records and LP jackets

There are different opinions on this, but it is recommended by most to remove the original wrapping from the manufacturer, the dreaded shrink wrap, as this may shrink over time; eventually warping the jacket or possibly the record. A note of caution, however, some of the stickers or promotional information on this shrink wrap may actually make the album more valuable if left on; so use discretion when removing the shrink wrap. It is recommended to replace this wrapping with a high density polyethylene outer protective sleeve.

Mylar is extremely clear, inert, 100% acid-free and considered to be the most archival of all protective sleeves. Polyester will not discolor, damage or adhere to items placed inside it. This material has passed the Photo Activity Test and Polyester is used worldwide in museums, libraries and archives. Our polyester material has been approved by the Library of Congress for archival storage."

It is also very important to have clean, acid free inner sleeves to protect your records with paper sleeves being the most practical. Some recordings were issued with inner sleeves that have acidity issues, which over time, could damage the vinyl records that they hold. Additionally, some sleeves may be viewed as collectible, so it's best to save them as part of the album package.

"We are the manufacturers of our paper sleeves and therefore have control over the sizes and materials used. Being the manufacturers also insures that the sizes are true, the holes are centered, and the seams are well-glued," stressed Street. "Investing in quality sleeves for your records is one of the most important care tips for long lasting vinyl."

Storing your records in boxes can also add to the preservation process in many ways according to Street: "Bags Unlimited boxes are the Standard of the Industry. Storing your records in our boxes keeps them in an environment that will protect the corners, edges, and flat surfaces. It also keeps them away from ultraviolet light, dust and other airborne pollutants that can destroy or damage them," Street stated. "Our boxes are super strong, properly sized and stackable. They come with 3" deep sturdy covers and die-cut handles that can be in the open position for carrying or closed position for storing."

Cleaning and maintaining vinyl records

The most important aspect of owning and playing vinyl records is to keep the records clean. Due to the chemical nature of vinyl, they attract dust and dirt. This is caused by vinyl's tendency to build up static electrical charges which attract small particles of dust which land in the grooves. These particles will cause "pops" and "clicks" as the record plays.

The cleaning of records should be performed before and after playing. This will ensure the best possible playback, and also prepares the record for "dust free" storage. It's highly recommended that a record collector have on hand some sort of carbon fiber brush (there are many varieties of brushes available). Carbon fibers are used to help disrupt static buildup while brushing relies on the vibration of the almost microscopic carbon fibers to clean the grooves and remove dust and dirt. It's recommended that the turntable be running while brushing rather than holding the record in your hands because this will result in a smoother, more consistent cleaning motion.

Some people get so intensely careful about cleaning their vinyl records, they often forget about keeping the needle clean. Since the needle is constantly tracking in the groove of the records, it attracts large amounts of dirt and dust particles and must be cleaned. When not properly maintained, the needle may not vibrate fully and may not rest in the bottom of the record groove; resulting in decreased sound quality and other audio problems. Needle maintenance supplies are easily obtained, for instance, the aforementioned BagsUnlimited.com sells an inexpensive "Stylus Care System" which includes a special cleaning fluid and a dense nylon brush to maintain a clean needle.

Obviously the turntable surface should be kept clean of dust and static. Most newer turntables come equipped with a rubber or antistatic felt surface. A great way to clean both the needle and the turntable area and also keep the carbon fiber brush clean is with condensed air in a can, which is available at any electronics retailer; just spray the area before and after playing your records for a continued dust free environment for your audio treasures. Taking this one step further, BagsUnlimited has in stock a unique antistatic solution, as Dave Street explains:

"We carry a portable antistatic, ionizing air gun to use with the condensed air dust remover and it will significantly boost the ability of canned air to remove dust from static-prone areas. This ionizing gun effectively neutralizes static charges in vinyl, plastics, glass, films, Mylar and other items that hold static charges by creating a flow of ions that neutralizes static charges and releases clinging dust. The gun easily snaps onto any type of nonflammable canned air," explained Street.

There are many cleaning solutions that can be used to 'wet' wash a record and it really is a matter of personal preference as to which one to employ. In the old days, when record were made of shellac, they could be cleaned with a mild solution of regular soap and water (always use distilled water as tap water often contains too many contaminants) and this was the preferred way to maintain the old 78 rpm records. Never use the new cleaning solutions on 78's because they are alcohol-based and can dissolve shellac recordings and will ruin these types of records.

Speaking with Dave Street again, they sell several kits of various sizes to help keep record clean. "We recommend the 'Groovy Record Cleaning Kit' and each kit comes with micro bristled cleaning brush; cotton cleaning cloth, various sized bottles of GROOVY Cleaning Fluid which is Bags Unlimited's own Record Cleaning Fluid, and is specially formulated for its deep cleaning, antistatic, residue-free properties."

It's also recommend not storing the vinyl inside the record cover but instead slip the vinyl (protected by the inner sleeve) behind the cover with both protected by the outer sleeve, because storing the vinyl inside the cover may eventually create seam and/or spine splits. Over time the weight of the record could possibly cut through the binding.

The reward

This article was not written to exemplify how hard it is to maintain vinyl records; on the contrary, these are very simple tasks and often become mundane and second nature after time. But the reward is so great-the preservation of your prized collection and the coupdeville- the best possible sound reproduction that is humanly possible. With proper care and diligence, these historic audio treasures will last a lifetime or two, giving vinyl record owners many hours of listening bliss.

Dropkick Murphys Reveal Album Cover Art

Celtic punk outfit the Dropkick Murphys have revealed the album cover art for their upcoming album called 'Signed and Sealed In Blood,' which is expected to be released sometime in early 2013.

The album is their second with producer Ted Hutt (Gaslight Anthem, Old Crow Medicine Show), which was recorded at Boston's Q Division studios and mixed by Joe Chiccarelli (The White Stripes).

"We had such a great time writing our last album, Going Out In Style, we were excited to get back into the studio right away," says bassist and co-lead singer Ken Casey. "Where Going Out in Style was a concept album-kind of intricate and difficult-this one is catchy, fun, and as sing-along as can be."
