Sam Roberts to Give 'The Inhuman Condition' First-Ever Vinyl Pressing Through Paper Bag Records

AVAILABLE MARCH 5TH ON LIMITED EDITION 180 GRAM BLUE VINYL

For the first time ever since its 2002 release, The Inhuman Condition is being released on vinyl. This six-song EP marked the breakthrough for Canadian favourite Sam Roberts. The Inhuman Condition has reached certified gold status and sold over 50,000 copies to date, making it one of the most successful and bestselling EP's by a Canadian band in the history of Canadian recorded music.

The Inhuman Condition, was a heaven-sent prophecy from the classic-pop gods translated into street-level terms, and while there was no denying Sam’s way with ultra-addictive melody, he also displayed astonishing breadth in just six tracks, from knockout power-pop punches ('Don’t Walk Away Eileen) and moody folk mysticism ('Brother Down,' the official soundtrack of summer 2002) to extended psych-pop jams ('Where Have All the Good People Gone?) and middle-finger-waving rockers ('This is How I Live').

Sam and the band have decided to release just 500 copies of the limited edition 180 gram blue vinyl, making it a real souvenir for fans of the band. The EP includes the original versions of hits ‘Brother Down’ and ‘Where Have All the Good People Gone’.

Tracklisting:
1. Don’t Walk Away Eileen
2. Brother Down
3. Where Have All The Good People Gone
4. Everything Was Alright
5. My Love Is Freeing
6. This Is How I Live

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 21, 2013

DEAR JERRY: I am perplexed by a word in "Mildred, Won't You Behave," by the Bill Elliott Swing Orchestra, from their "Calling All Jitterbugs" CD.

At the 2:28 mark, their female sings "She took the gators on two by two, she even danced with an ??" The mystery word ends with "roo," but is not kang-a-roo. It sounds like ek-ta-roo, or ig-a-roo.

Before writing, I searched the Internet, but to no avail. Now it's up to you.
—Jennifer Tyskiewicz, New Berlin, Wis.

DEAR JENNIFER:
You're right, Millie is not dancing with a kangaroo. If that were the case, far fewer people would flummoxed by the word, and it would still rhyme with "two."

Dare I also point out how appropriate it would be for a kangaroo to be doing the Lindy HOP, a dance for which music like this is perfect.

Okay, enough with the marsupial musing.

I realize you wrote many months ago, but it took this long to track down Bill Elliott, the person whose opinion I trust most when it comes to Mildred's dancing partners.

Bill told me he has been asked many times about this line, which is "she even danced with an ick-a-roo."

He discovered the jive usage of both "ickaroo" and "gator" in Cab Calloway's "(Hep-Hep!) The Jumpin' Jive" (Vocalion 5005), a million-seller in 1939. Only "Minnie the Moocher," Calloway's signature song, is better known.

In "(Hep-Hep!) The Jumpin' Jive," Cab suggests "Now don't you be that ickaroo, get hip c'mon and let me follow through … jumpin' like the gators do."

In Harlemese, an ickaroo is someone who is icky, and not hep to the jive. In the 1950s, this person would have been called a square, or more recently a dufus or dweeb. Ickaroos were never the life of the party.

On the other hand, a gator was a cool hep cat, and usually popular.

Seems Mildred didn't deny anyone the pleasure of her company. She took the gators on two by two, and EVEN danced with an ickaroo (but only one).

Elliott's retro style is so convincing that most folks think "Mildred," and his other swing tunes, came out in the 1940s. Not so! "Calling All Jitterbugs" (Wayland 00229) was recorded and issued in 1998.

Bill explains a bit about how they get that sound:

"First, these tracks were all recorded in Hollywood at Capitol's Studio B, essentially unchanged from when it opened in 1956, then modeled after the studio they used since the early '40s.

"Keeping with our retro theme, our quartet, known as Bill's Lucky Stars, sing together into one mike, just as the Pied Pipers with Jo Stafford.

"The Lucky Stars each sang with separate mikes at first, like most contemporary groups. But we found when they huddle close together they hear each other in a very physical way and can control their own blend.

"Even more important, the three guys, standing further away from the mike than Cassie, can belt it out with gusto. That turned out to be essential to recreating the old-time magic vocal sound.

"We created "Mildred, Won't You Behave" because of one comment by Michael Geiger, one of the Lucky Stars. He said: "It would be fun if we had a simple tune that really jumps." Soon we did."

In 2004, Bill moved from Los Angeles to Boston to teach arranging and orchestration at Berklee College of Music. For awhile, he commuted coast-to-coast, working in L.A. with the band, as well as doing assorted music projects for films and television.

IZ ZAT SO? More recently, Bill Elliott has arranged and orchestrated Broadway shows as well as producing and conducting for recording sessions.

In 2012, Bill enjoyed a most unusual trifecta — the distinction of being nominated for a Tony (orchestrator of "Nice Work if You Can Get It"); an Emmy (music director of the PBS special "The Sinatra Legacy"); and a GRAMMY (producer of "Nice Work if You Can Get It" cast album).

Busy as ever, Bill admitted "At this very moment, as we're talking, I'm doing some orchestration on an upcoming Broadway production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Cinderella."

I do know when it's time to say adieu.

Marianne Faithfull - Broken English

Mastered by Kevin Gray

New Release - 180+ Virgin Vinyl

"This is Marianne Faithfull at her most naked and emotional - her definitive recording."

For Marianne Faithfull, 1979's Broken English was a radical departure, featuring a contemporary fusion of rock, punk, New Wave and dance, with liberal use of synthesizers. No one was prepared for the transformation of Marianne Faithfull's innocent flower child image, her immediately preceding albums had been in a relatively gentle folk or country and western style. Those who listened were in for a surprise, especially those who first heard her in the '60s as the virginal voice of her boyfriend, Mick Jagger's, "As Tears Go By."

When seemingly she had disappeared entirely, she emerged with this dark but definitely musically modern work. And her voice! After years of drug abuse, her voice was in a lower register, far raspier, and had a more world-weary quality than in the past that matched the often raw emotions expressed in the newer songs.

Broken English was widely hailed by critics and audiences alike on its release, a successful album without the aid of a huge hit single. The album reached # 57 on the UK album charts and # 82 in the US. The album contains some of her most famous songs, including the title track and "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan," and was notable for the controversy surrounding the final number "Why D'Ya Do It." Although the boundaries have shifted in the decades since this album's release, the language is still shocking, the album is still as potent as ever and remains Marianne's masterpiece, and one of the best albums by a female vocalist ever.

TRACKS:

Broken English
Witches' Song
Brain Drain
Guilt
The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan
What's The Hurry
Working Class Hero
Why D'Ya Do It

The Kustom Kings (1964)

Kustom City U.S.A. LP

Long lost hot-rod classic featuring bruce johnston

180 gram vinyl

(This item will ship to arrive to you by our street date of January 29)

Prior to becoming a full-time Beach Boy and well before he wrote the song that made the whole world sing, Bruce Johnston was a key member of the West Coast music scene. In 1959, while still in high school, Johnston played piano on friend Sandy Nelson's hit single, "Teenbeat." This opportunity kicked off an incredibly prolific period for the young musician. Johnston recorded under his own name as well as many group names, playing with the cream of the California session personnel, The Wrecking Crew. He also made records with his friend Terry Melcher until Melcher moved on to pursue record producing full time. Johnston was producing as well but saw no reason to stop his musical pursuits. Songwriter, vocalist, producer, session musician—if the surf and hot rod scene had a renaissance man, surely it was Bruce Johnston.

By 1964, Johnston was already a proven veteran. Following up the success of The Rip Chords collaboration with Melcher and its hit single "Hey Little Cobra," Johnston revved up The Kustom Kings. With a mission statement "to present the most authentic hot rod album on the market," the Kustom City U.S.A. album brought together an all-star team. Bruce Johnston wrote and co-wrote much of the LP's material, as did producer/arranger/saxophonist Steve Douglas. Rounding out the band were guitarists Tommy Tedesco and Glen Campbell, Ray Pohlmann on bass, Jay Migliori on second sax and Hal Blaine on drums—WOW! For added authenticity, car designer George Barris, "THE KING OF THE KUSTOMIZERS," jumped on board as a special adviser. He, along with several of his rolling works of art, is pictured on the album's artwork. Looking at the full-color front cover slick, you can practically smell the burning rubber and fresh coats of paint!

The too-cool visuals are just a bonus, however, because the REAL story is the music! A hi-octane mix of vocal tracks and charging instrumentals, there is not a second of filler to be found among the twelve tracks. Tedesco and Campbell lock in gripping guitar duels while Douglas and Migliori wail over the timing belt beat of Blaine and Pohlmann. Johnston contributes superb vocal and piano work and together, the Kustom Kings jam the accelerator down to floorboard! An album this magnificent should have ruled the charts, but things were moving quickly in 1964 and the public's attention soon turned elsewhere. Through the ensuing years, word of Kustom City U.S.A. and its brilliance spread through the collector scene, with copies of the LP changing hands for considerable sums. And now, just when you thought the tank was on E, Sundazed roars in with a maniacally marvelous reissue! Sourced from the original stereo masters, Kustom City, U.S.A. has been tuned up and restored to showroom condition.

In The Groove is a new ingenious record cleaning roller. Its patented material was designed by a surgeon for use in the operating room where it keeps surgical instruments close at hand. This patented material has been repurposed as one of the coolest record cleaning tools ever designed. The soft, sticky substance sinks deep down into the grooves, pulling out years of debris and removing ticks and pops from your vinyl. Place any LP on a flat surface and roll In The Groove on the record following the grooves. No fluids or cleaning agents needed. When it gets dirty, just rinse it off under the sink and blot it dry with a paper towel. The sticky surface will be good as new. Our highest recommendation for an entry-level record cleaning tool!

Special Anniversary Logo, Picture Disc a Month, and North American Headline Tour to be Announced Shortly!

2013 marks death metal juggernauts, CANNIBAL CORPSE’S 25th year as a band and CANNIBAL is going to celebrate it all year long! The logo has been updated to reflect the monumental occasion and will be used on all things CANNIBAL, from merch to packaging, throughout 2013. There is also a box set in the works for the most extreme CANNIBAL CORPSE fan, which is expected to drop in March – details coming soon!

In addition to the updated logo only being used this year and the box set, Metal Blade Records will be releasing one picture disc a month from the band’s expansive catalog (Eaten Back to Life, Butchered at Birth, Tomb of the Mutilated, The Bleeding, Vile, Gallery of Suicide, Bloodthirst, Gore Obsessed, The Wretched Spawn, KILL, Evisceration Plague, Torture). A total of 12 pictures discs will be released, covering all of the band’s full-length studio albums, some of which have never been released on picture disc. The first picture disc available for preorder is Eaten Back to Life, which was released August 17, 1990, and can be found HERE. Check back each month to get a glimpse of the next picture disc available for preorder.
