Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

in contact with the folks who run the project, will have more information coming soon, in the meantime, here is what they say about themselves on their website:

Feedbands - Monthly Vinyl Friendly Project Caters To Indie Music Fans

Feedbands is a crowd-sourced vinyl record company. Musicians submit their music and your vote helps determine who gets pressed to vinyl. Each month, subscribers to our service receive a first pressing of a vinyl record from an independent artist.

Our model is different from traditional record companies in that:

• Artists keep all the rights to their music
• We pay the artist up front when we press their record
• We let our listeners from all over the world vote on who we should press next, via our apps

We at Feedbands believe that music is essential and should be shared. We also believe that musicians should be able to make a living without losing their artistic integrity.

Our mission is to provide rich, vibrant, independent music to the world in a way that supports our artists. We want to develop an arena, online and off, where musicians can come together to create, write, jam, express, perform, record, and share their music, and where music lovers of all kinds can find amazing new tunes and easily give back.

What started as a small group of collaborative musicians has grown into a collective of artists, producers, engineers, and fans, and this is just the beginning. At Feedbands, we're openly embracing the digital age and the opportunities our website, app, and social media outlets allow us, and we're striving to extend our reach, but we also never want to lose our roots or lose the roots of music itself: analog sound. Music is, at it's core, analog. It starts in the soul and it should always stay there.

We're constantly on the lookout for new, innovative, unsigned artists to help make Feedbands even bigger and better. If this sounds like you, check us out!

how many times have you seen a band play and wonder why they haven't 'made it big'?  well, Feedbands cuts through the red tape, PR men and women from record companies and lets the music public vote on the bands they want to hear.  what a groundbreaking process and one that we will learn more about in upcoming posts. so take time today and find out what they are all about at Feedbands.com

Marnie - Crystal World (2LP)

Double black LP in gatefold jacket with one side containing Marnie's etching.

Crystal World is a glittering electronic pop album by Marnie, the moniker adopted by Ladytron lead singer Helen Marnie for her debut solo project, produced by Daniel Hunt and co-produced by Bardi Johannsson.

Recorded in Reykjavik, Iceland, in August 2012, Crystal World comprises ten original songs written by Marnie while Ladytron enjoy a temporary sabbatical. Crystal World evokes the collision of two spheres. In the midst of a volcanic electronic landscape, the heart and soul of Marnie merge to create a glacial pop affair. Frequently Marnie laments the sea, itself so suggestive of change and movement, a feeling which ebbs and flows across the record, luring the listener in despite the gathering emotional storm.

Focus track The Hunter was issued as a download single in May 2013. Hearts On Fire is another dark anthem with a pop chorus that builds until it's close. Venturing further into Crystal World, Submariner is a fragile tale to warm the coldest of hearts, while closing track Gold inspires just the right amount of melancholy, at the same time ending with soaring guitars and synths and an immense feeling of hope.

The cover design is by Laura Hussey, with photography by Lisa Devine, assisted by Mack Photography.  We expect this item to be in stock on October 1, 2013.

Cabaret Voltaire - Red Mecca (Remastered)

Mute are delighted to announce a series of Cabaret Voltaire releases, starting with the vinyl issue of Cabaret Voltaire’s iconic 1981 album Red Mecca.

Remastered and available here on vinyl for the first time since Mute’s reissue in 1990, Red Mecca features the line up of Richard H Kirk, Stephen Mallinder and Chris Watson, and is Cabaret Voltaire’s third album, and the final full album with co-founder Chris Watson.

Red Mecca was produced at Western Works, Sheffield, and, although rioting at this time hadn’t reached Cabaret Voltaire’s hometown, it was a particularly incendiary time across Britain and the tension was explicit through the news media. Explains Kirk, “that insurrection on the streets found its way into the music” and the album was seen by many as the alternative soundtrack to the unrest on the streets.

With Middle Eastern musical influences and a title that reflected the beginnings of long running tensions stemming from the Islamic Revolution and the resulting Afghanistan conflict and rise in fundamentalism, the buried vocals and large instrumental passages are a wonderful bridge between the punkier ethos of earlier releases, Mix Up and The Voice Of America and the more dance minded 2X45 and Yashar EPs that followed.  We expect this item to be in stock on September 17, 2013.

THE COMPLETE STORY OF TALULAH GOSH! 29 TRACKS!

DIGIPAK CD WITH 24 PAGE BOOKLET
DOUBLE GATEFOLD LP
FIRST TIME AVAILABLE SINCE THE 90’S
SLEEVE NOTES / NEW INTERVIEW BY EVERETT TRUE (THE LEGEND!)

Damaged Goods are proud to present the Talulah Gosh retrospective. With recordings, radio sessions, archive photos and extensive liner notes by The Legend! (Everett True), Was It Just A Dream? celebrates DIY indie pop at its happiest.

Formed in Oxford in February 1986, with a name taken from an NME interview with Clare Grogan, Talulah Gosh married their love of Sixties girl groups, punk rock and the speediness of the Ramones, to jangly guitars, layers of backing vocals and a defiantly anti-macho stance. Adored and reviled in equal measure, the band were truly hated by many, and in a way the band even courted the antagonism.

The initial line-up featured Marigold (a.k.a. Amelia Fletcher) guitar/vocals, Pebbles (a.k.a. Elizabeth Price) violin/guitar/vocals/tambourine, with Mathew Fletcher on drums, Peter Momtchiloff on guitar (Razorcuts, Marine Research, Would-be-goods) and Rob Pursey on bass (Marine Research, Sportique, Tender Trap). Chris Scott took over bass player duties when Rob left, and Eithne Farry took over vocals and tambourine when Elizabeth decamped in December 1986.

One of Talulah Gosh’s earliest recordings was released as a flexi on Matt Haynes's Sha La La label for the influential Are You Scared to Get Happy? fanzine. Around that time, the band had signed to Edinburgh-based 53rd & 3rd label where they scored two UK Independent Top 5 singles with 'Steaming Train/Just A Dream' and 'Beatnik Boy/My Best Friend'. The band recorded two Radio One sessions (one for Peel, June '88, the other for Janice Long, May'86) which were collected on THEY'VE SCOFFED THE LOT (Sarah604).

The group split in early 1988. Amelia, Peter, Rob, and Mathew subsequently formed Heavenly, worldwide ambassadors of indie pop in the 1990s.

Elizabeth went on to win the 2012 Turner Prize, Peter is philosophy editor at Oxford University Press, Amelia is a Professor at the University of East Anglia, Eithne is books editor at Marie Claire and an author of low fi craft books, Rob is a TV producer, and Chris is travel counsellor. Mathew Fletcher died in 1996.

This collection features all known Talulah Gosh recordings including the first demo tape, which was originally sent to Stephen Pastel in a plasticine-covered cassette box. It secured the band their recording contract with 53rd and 3rd and was eventually made available for the first time as a very limited release 7" for Record Store Day in 2012. The album also includes a free extra download of one of the later Talulah Gosh gigs at the Old Fire Station in Oxford, with Eithne singing but notable for the fact that you can hear Elizabeth heckling in the background.

Every on-line purchase comes with a free download of the album PLUS a extra live set as well.

AMERICAN SHARKS - 4 LP Vinyl bundle

THIS BUNDLE INCLUDES:

-American Sharks brand new studio album on 4 different colored vinyls (Black, Green, Pink & Yellow)

-This Bundle is VERY LIMITED ONLY 50 WILL BE AVAILABLE!!

The breakneck pace provided by Nick Cornetti (Drums), the primeval-punk vocals of Mike Hardin (Bass, Vocals) with Will Ellis’ slick technical guitar accentuated by a savage amount of fuzz and volume (Guitar) creates the signature sound of American Sharks. Collectively, American Sharks have hollowed out the standard body of stoner rock aspects, replacing the engine with the intensity of modern metal techniques. The volume is always set to auditory annihilation and the foot is always on the gas, firing through songs until their (and most times, the crowd’s) tank is empty.

The American Sharks’ origins lie in Houston, Texas where Mike Hardin and Will Ellis formed the band with an alternate drummer and fourth man in 2007. Creating a following from detonating at house parties, a consequent move further south into Austin slimmed the band to a three piece replacing the original drummer with Nick Cornetti. Cornetti recorded and released the debut EP “WeedWizard” through his indie label, Pau Wau Records. The single “Indian Man” and the accompanying music video grasped the attention of renowned Austin retro-metal group The Sword, leading to an opening slot in their 2012 tour. In 2013 American Sharks were an official SXSW artist, headlining the Volcom Showcase as well as headlining the Pau Wau Records showcase. Their debut LP was recorded with Bryan Richie of The Sword and will be released via The End Records. A tour is scheduled to promote the album in the fall alongside Clutch and The Sword.

Duality - A New Experimental Vinyl Record That Merges Art And Music

lots of emails come into the CVR blog inbox, but this one certainly warrants looking into, i hope that you agree and help the artist meet his goals!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ARTIST SEEKS FUNDING FOR EXPERIMENTAL ALBUM THAT EXPLORES CYLE OF LIFE

Duality’s title track is the creation of “Life” and “Death”—two songs to be experienced separately or as one

MINNEAPOLIS (September 5, 2013) – Visual artist and musician Neal Calvin Peterson announced the launch of a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to support Duality, the first in a series of experimental albums and conceptual artwork that merges science, religion and philosophy.

Duality is a different type of album in the way that its title track “Duality," can be split into two individual songs—"Life" and "Death." These two songs can be experienced separately, or can be played at the exact same time.

This will be the first in a series of experimental albums from Infinite Religions, a project by Peterson, whose work focuses on visual and aural interpretations through various forms of media. The Infinite Religions series was inspired by mankind’s search for truth, and will cover topics related to our existence.

“I love experimenting in the spaces between art and music,” said Peterson. “I feel the same way about the spaces between life and death. Whether you believe in an afterlife, reincarnation, or none of the above, we can all agree that there's a great amount of mystery as to why we’re here.”

Duality will be a limited-edition release of 99 vinyl record albums, individually signed and numbered with handwritten lyrics. A digital release of the music will also be available.

In addition to the music, a multi-piece artwork was created as a visual counterpart. This piece was photographed for use as the album cover and has since been deconstructed into a collection of five individual works of art.

Peterson is seeking funding for the final production elements of the album, which is scheduled to debut in late 2013. Upon release,Duality will be transmitted into space. Kickstarter backers of $20 or more will have the opportunity to have their name included in the transmission.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 2, 2013

DEAR JERRY: Motivated in part by your columns, I started a collection of picture sleeves for singles, mostly 45 rpms, and a few Compact 33 singles.

I do have a few questions regarding my new hobby:

Regardless of music type, what is the first hit record with a picture sleeve?

Who had the first No. 1 hit issued with a picture sleeve?

What was the first No. 1 rock single sold with a picture sleeve?

You have mentioned picture sleeves, custom sleeves, and company sleeves. Are these terms synonymous, or is each different?

Finally, who had the most picture sleeves?
—Kirk Duncan, Evansville, Ind.

DEAR KIRK: I had to roll up MY sleeves and get out the calculator, but I do have some answers for you, and they're in the same order asked:

The first two No. 1 hits, commercially available on singles with picture sleeves, were from Columbia and specifically for their Children's Series. Both are Christmas tunes.

First is "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer," by Gene Autry and the Pinafores (Columbia 4-56), a perennial favorite since originally issued in 1949. However, the picture sleeve accompanied the 1951 single. One year later, "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus," by Little Jimmy Boyd (Columbia MJV 4-152) topped the charts. That sleeve has a circular die-cut on the front side, allowing the label to be seen. In 1953, the same sleeve was used but without the die-cut and with a slightly different number (Columbia MJV 152).

Being targeted to young people, neither of these sleeves, nor any in the MJV series, pictured the recording artists. Most of the illustrations were comic character drawings. For example, these two picture red-nosed Rudolph (Autry) and Santa Claus smooching mommy (Boyd). The back sides list other Columbia records in the series.

Moving past kiddie records, the first mainstream No. 1 hit originally sold in a custom sleeve — one that actually pictures the singer — is Perry Como's "No Other Love" (RCA Victor 47-5317), from the summer of '53.

Perry was followed a few months later by a couple more sleeved million-sellers from Columbia: Tony Bennett's "Stranger in Paradise" (4-40121) and Jo Stafford's "Make Love to Me" (4-40143).

The first chart-topping R&R hit with a picture sleeve is Elvis Presley's third RCA single, "Don't Be Cruel" backed with "Hound Dog" (47-6604) from mid-1956. The only reason the answer isn't "Heartbreak Hotel" or "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" is that RCA, inexplicably, didn't make custom sleeves for those two No. 1 hits.

Regarding terminology, any record sleeve with printing is considered a custom one as long as it is made for that specific record. They might achieve that with artwork and/or text, though ones with text only would technically be a custom sleeve rather than a picture sleeve. Unfortunately, too often in the marketplace that distinction is not made.

A printed sleeve lacking a direct connection to its contents is either "generic," identifies and/or pictures the artist, but with no specific titles shown, or "company" (a.k.a. "factory"), where the focus is on the company. These sometimes list and/or picture some of their artists.

"Plain" sleeves without any printing are extremely common and, though very useful to protect the records, have no monetary value. Most are of either white or brown paper.

Tallying the number of picture sleeves for someone is not an exact science. Some artists have more than one sleeve for the same title, special ones made just for promotional use, or EPs (with covers) that are in fact seven-inch 45 or 33 rpms.

Considering all the possible aberrations, I will merely estimate the grand totals, knowing they are subject to whatever parameters one might establish.

Each of these stars have at least 20 custom sleeves:

Elvis Presley 132 (1956-2011)
Connie Francis 55 (1958-1969)
Rick Nelson 53 (1958-1986)
Rolling Stones 49 (1964-2012)
Beatles 47 (1964-1996)
Paul Anka 41 (1959-1983)
Brenda Lee 35 (1956-1985)
Duane Eddy 33 (1959-1986)
Bobby Vinton 35 (1962-1980)
Dave Clark Five 28 (1964-1993)
Annette 25 (1958-1969)
Bobby Rydell 24 (1959-1964)
Buck Owens 24 (1964-2011)
Brook Benton 21 (1960-1965)

IZ ZAT SO? During the vinyl era, what determined whether or not a record company went to the added expense of producing a picture sleeve is still a bit of a mystery.

Now that we know some of the artists with the most custom sleeves, let's turn the list upside down.

After Elvis, the only others with more than 100 songs charted (Pop and R&B combined) are James Brown and Ray Charles. Double-sided hits count as just one record.

James Brown had 132 records on the charts but only 11 of those had picture sleeves.

Ray Charles had 89 records (many with two hits), yet only one came with a picture sleeve. He does appear on two others on which he is "featured," one with Billy Joel and one with Quincy Jones.

Grateful Dead - Sunshine Daydream Veneta

The Grateful Dead formed in 1965 in the San Francisco Bay Area. The band was known for its unique and eclectic style, which fused elements of rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, reggae, country, jazz, psychedelia, and space rock and for live performances of long musical improvisation. "Their music," writes Lenny Kaye, "touches on ground that most other groups don't even know exists."

• Mixed by Jeffrey Norman at TRI Studios
• Mastered by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering
• Audio tapes transferred and restored by Plangent Processes
• Lacquers cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering
• Four 180-gram LPs housed in a lavish 4-panel “M-pack” jacket featuring original artwork by Steve Vance and tie-dye by Courtenay Pollock
• Limited Edition of 5,000

"The rock music group Grateful Dead is scheduled to perform at a 'potluck picnic' Sunday, sponsored by the Springfield Creamery." Eugene Register-Guard

A "rock picnic." The Field Trip. Kesey's Creamery. August 27, 1972. The Springfield Creamery Benefit. Call it what you will, the sun was beating down hard and bright on that fateful day in Veneta, Oregon when the Grateful Dead heeded Ken Kesey's call to help save the family Creamery. The 100-degree and rising temperatures did not deter the band who were still riding high from their adventures across the pond. It did not discourage filmmakers John Norris, Phil DeGuere, and Sam Field who gained entry into the Dead's tight-knit world with their promise to capture the culture and integrity of the scene. And it certainly didn't inhibit the estimated 20,000 Dead Heads who could not believe their, well, pot...luck.

In fact, this blistering day turned out to be a near-perfect little piece of the Grateful Dead experience and it is with great pleasure, that 41 years later we can present Sunshine Daydream to you the way it was meant to be heard. Cut from the flawlessly preserved 16-track master, this 180-gram LP set of the "most requested" and "most revered" Dead show of all time promises to transport you back to the epic scene with definitive versions of the band's most beloved songs like "Bertha," "China>Rider," "Playing In The Band,""Greatest Story Ever Told,""Dark Star," and "Sing Me Back Home." Limited to just 5,000 copies, you can pre-order it now

The song was also a phenomenon in Europe, becoming Bryans' biggest hit ever topping the charts in 16 countries and selling about 10 million copies worldwide and is one of the biggest selling singles of all time. The song was nominated for an Academy Award and won a Grammy Award in 1992 for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture or Television.

Other singles which followed included the rockin' "Can't Stop This Thing We Started," which
became a number two hit, the mid-tempo ballads "Do I Have to Say the Words" and "Thought
I'd Died and Gone to Heaven," and the fun, straight-ahead rocker "There Will Never Be Another Tonight." Adams co-produced the album with Robert "Mutt" Lange previously known for his work with AC/DC, Foreigner and Def Leppard.

The Shirelles - Baby It's You

180 gram vinyl

A HIT-FILLED ALBUM FROM THE ORIGINAL GIRL GROUP!

When Shirley Owens, Doris Coley, Addie “Micki” Harris and Beverly Lee got together to sing for a high school talent show in 1957, they had no intentions of becoming professional musicians. However, fate stepped in when classmate Mary Jane Greenberg told her mother, Tiara Records owner Florence Greenberg, about the group. Greenberg signed them to her label, released a single and then sold the label, along with the fledgling group, to Decca Records. Decca soon dropped them, which left Greenberg free to sign them to her new label, Scepter Records. At Scepter, The Shirelles hit their stride, working with the cream of the Brill Building songwriters. One of these songwriters, Luther Dixon, was hired by Greenberg to write for and produce the group and together they developed the group’s signature sound. Under his guidance, the Shirelles enjoyed seven Top 20 hits and launched the girl group genre.

Released as a single in 1961, “Baby It’s You” reached #8 on the pop charts and #3 on the R&B charts. Written by Burt Bacharach, Mack David and Luther Dixon (under the pseudonym Barney Williams), the song has become an enduring classic, covered by The Beatles, Smith and many other artists. It also served as the title track for The Shirelles’ first album of 1962. Baby Its You features 12 outstanding songs, including their single “Soldier Boy” which topped the Billboard Hot 100. Sourced from the original analog session tapes, this Sundazed reissue faithfully reproduces one of the most influential albums of the early ‘60s (certainly, Barry Gordy would agree). After one listen, you won’t want nobody, nobody but The Shirelles.

Broken Bells - Broken Bells

When James Mercer of the Shins got together with Brian Burton AKA Danger Mouse, the result became more than the sum of its parts.

Plans for their collaboration were made since 2004 but first blossomed into their first single "The High Road" in 2009. An album had to follow, so in 2010 Broken Bells was released to great critical and popular acclaim.

The duo avoided sounding too much like their own individual styles: Danger Mouse laid off the samples, playing drums, organs and keys himself. Mercer stretched his vocal cords into falsetto range, at times. Their creative energies gel like no other contemporary collaboration.

This addictive record is built to last. We can only hope there's more magic in the works by these modern time geniuses.

Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes

Often called 'one of the defining Glam platters', Mott The Hoople's All The Young Dudes (1972) was an influential record when it came out, and continues to impress listeners to this day.

Coproduced by David Bowie, the album contains a balanced selection of well written songs by Ian Hunter and the boys. The band is on a roll, and having Bowie on board to colour in the songs with his distinctive style makes this an essential record for '70s Rock fans all over the globe. 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Foreigner - 4

Produced by Robert John 'Mutt' Lange (famous for recording AC/DCs' Back In Black), 4 meant the definitive mainstream breakthrough for New York based AOR band Foreigner.

Featuring the massive hit "Waiting For A Girl Like You", the album turned into a heavy seller. Other tracks, such as "Urgent", "Woman In Black", "Luanne" and "Juke Box Hero" showed the versatile nature of the group.  Combining heavy riffing with effective power balladry, Foreigner claimed their stake in Rock and will live on as a Rock staple for many decades to come. 180 gram audiophile vinyl Insert

Ted Nugent - Double Live Gonzo

Ted Nugents untameable energy is best transmitted live on stage; Double Live Gonzo! (1978) achieves this like no other. He shouts, grunts and squeals, while his guitar does the same. Pure pyrotechnics on 6 strings!

His hit "Cat Scratch Fever" gets the live treatment, as does "Great White Buffalo". "Just What The Doctor Ordered" is indeed exactly what the doctor ordered: if you ever find yourself in need of getting your Rawk & Roll fix quick, look no further than Double Live Gonzo! Play it loud.  180 gram audiophile vinyl

Otis Redding - Sings Soul Ballads

Released in 1965, Otis Redding's second album Sings Soul Ballads features a fine choice of sweet and tender songs.

Backed up by the STAX house band consisting of such soul greats as Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Donald 'Duck' Dunn, and Al Jackson Jr., Redding delivers the goods with impressive style. His renditions of Sam Cooke's "Nothing Can Change This Love" and Chuck Willis' "It's Too Late" can be seen as improved versions of the originals. Biggest hit on the album proved to be "Mr. Pitiful", a nickname given to Redding by a local Memphis radio DJ. 180 gram audiophile vinyl

The Dodos Carrier LP Out Now

We're excited to finally say that The Dodos' new album Carrier is out now!

When it came time for The Dodos to begin writing their fifth LP, Carrier, singer/guitarist Meric Long wanted to start over.

The uncertainty of the band's trajectory as well as the passing of guitarist Chris Reimer brought about a reassessment of things within the band, and in particular Long's songwriting.

In need of a different vantage point, Long began writing words before music for the first time, enveloping himself in silence rather than sound.

When it came time to set these lyrics to music, Long started writing with only his electric guitar in hand -- another first. The focus on this instrument was due in large part to the time Long spent with Reimer. Also the guitarist for Women, Reimer joined Long and percussionist Logan Kroeber to become the third member of The Dodos throughout 2011 before unexpectedly passing away early the following year.

"Chris was a huge influence on the way I think about guitar, songwriting, and music in general," reveals Long. "Seeing how he could transform and shape sound with an electric guitar inspired me to explore more tones and use those tones to begin writing a song."

And so, when he began to formulate the tracks that would ultimately comprise Carrier, Long employed two principles he inherited from Reimer: patience to let a song develop and a judgment-free enthusiasm for sound.

To this end, Long and Kroeber decided to record in their hometown of San Francisco for the first time, allowing for less time constraints and a more pressure-free experience than past out-of-state sessions had afforded.

Praise for the record has been widespread, with Filter declaring "...the lyrics on Carrier stand as the most meaningful in their catalog, making their newest album stand once again as the band's best yet."

Paste also found much to like, remarking that "Carrier maintains the Dodos' signature style and is therefore refreshingly familiar: heartfelt and sincere, organic and smart, imaginative and exploratory."

“TOMMY” BY THE WHO - SUPER DELUXE BOXSET and DELUXE EDITION

Remastered with 20 UNRELEASED DEMOS, A FULL UNRELEASED LIVE VERSION OF TOMMY and HI FIDELITY 5.1 MIX

Released November 11th 2013

Tommy, The Who’s defining, breakthrough concept album – a full-blown rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind boy that launched the band to international superstardom is to be released in Deluxe and Super Deluxe editions this Autumn.

Originally released in May 1969, The Who were at a career crossroads, known mainly as a singles band, but this project launched them as a serious ‘albums band’ and it has now sold over 20 million copies as well as regularly turning up in lists of the most influential albums of all time.

Coming after The Who Sell Out in 1967, it marked a complete change in style with Pete Townshend’s lengthy conceptual narrative bringing exciting new opportunities to rock music. Tommy was and remains to be an ambitious, complex and controversial work, which was initially banned by the BBC.

This new Deluxe and Super Deluxe version of the album comes with a wealth of previously unheard material in the form of 20 demos from Pete Townshend’s archive and also a full live performance of Tommy from 1969 taken from tapes that infamously Townshend asked the band’s sound engineer to burn!

18 of the previously unheard and thought to be long lost live tracks are taken from a live show at the Capital Theatre, Ottawa, Canada on October the 15th 1969. Three others, I’m Free, Tommy’s Holiday Camp and We’re Not Gonna Take It were lost due to tape reels being changed during the show  so are taken from later shows of the same era.

As discussed at length in Pete Townshend’s autobiography the tapes were all supposed to be destroyed but were kept by long time Who sound man Bob Pridden despite Pete’s instructions.

The Super Deluxe box also features a 5.1 mix featuring the complete album remixed in surround sound on new Hi Fidelity Pure Audio Blu-ray format

As well as the music the limited edition Super Deluxe boxset comes with a hardback 80-page full-colour book featuring rare period photos, memorabilia, a 20,000-word essay by legendary Who aficionado Richard Barnes and a rare facsimile Tommy poster housed in a hard-back deluxe slip-case.

Captain Beefheart's Debut Album Reissued By Sundazed

Captain Beefheart's 1967 debut album Safe As Milk introduced the world to a one-of-a-kind visionary whose unique output had no precedent in contemporary music. Beefheart, aka Don Van Vliet, filtered the raw influence of the blues and R&B through his own singular musical sensibility and left-field lyrical wordplay, and surrounded himself with some of the most talented and inventive young musicians around. The result was an album that, even in the heady year in which it was released, sounded like nothing else, and the stage for one of rock's most iconoclastic and idiosyncratic careers.

With backup from the first, and perhaps finest, incarnation of Beefheart's legendary Magic Band (including future solo star Ry Cooder on guitar and teenage drum prodigy John "Drumbo" French), and production from future studio superstar Richard Perry, Beefheart unveils his fully-formed sound and vision on such landmark tracks as "Zig Zag Wanderer," "Abba Zaba," "Dropout Boogie," "I'm Glad" and "Electricity" (covered two decades later by Sonic Youth).

Now released on LP and CD by Sundazed Music, this landmark album now sounds the way it was meant to sound, thanks to the restoration of Perry's rare original — and, to most fans, superior — mono mix, which was later altered by Beefheart's label without the artist's involvement. Both the LP and CD version of this definitive edition feature authoritative new liner notes by Rolling Stone editor and longtime Beefheart enthusiast David Fricke.

"In mono, Safe As Milk is a powerful, concentrated revelation," Fricke writes, further noting, "Safe As Milk promised comfort, exotic nourishment and rude health — and delivered. Created in a year rich in historic debuts and transformative statements about rock's dynamic and expressive possibilities, Safe As Milk was so far in it was out."

This title will be ready to ship by the street date of September 24, 2013.

Garage Rockers Distortions Get Vinyl Reissue From Sundazed

Minneapolis was their home turf. But in the decades that followed, appreciation for Distortions swelled to tidal wave proportions among fans of amped-up, ramped-up, balls-to-the-wall rock'n'roll. Headlined by two red-hot, stone-cold killers, "Action Woman" and "Soul Searchin'"—both penned by producer Warren Kendrick—Distortions is arguably the greatest private-press garage band album of the era.

The Litter formed in 1966 as a merger between two popular Twin Cities combos, the Victors and the Tabs. They quickly established a reputation as the wildest, loudest band on the scene. Bill Strandlof was responsible for the incendiary, feedback-laced guitar work on "Action Woman"—a local hit for the band when released as a single in January 1967—but by the summer he'd been replaced by another fast-fingered guitar slinger, Zippy Caplan. Caplan's fiery leads helped ignite the remainder of Distortions, including smoking interpretations of the Who's "Substitute," the Small Faces' "Whatcha Gonna Do About It," an intense reading of "Codine," and a comprehensive reconstruction-destruction of "I'm A Man." Sundazed is thrilled to present the first-ever from-the-masters vinyl reissue of Distortions, housed in the dead-cool original artwork and pressed on 180-gram vinyl. Pure, unfiltered '60s garage rock excitement is just a needle-drop away.

This title will be ready to ship by the street date of September 24, 2013.
