from our friends at Sundazed

A Vault of Vintage Psychedelia

The Strawberry Alarm Clock’s unique sound—full of beautiful, day-glo pop surrounding jagged, fuzzy guitars and organs, among other garage-rock influences—is explored through a number of dreamlike gems contained in these three volumes, all presented as originally issued! Their smash “Incense and Peppermints,” which reached #1 in late 1967 and remained in the Billboard pop chart for 16 weeks, is included on The Best of Strawberry Alarm Clock, and Wake Up...It’s Tomorrow and The World In A Sea Shell contain fan favorites (and ’60s psych gold) like “Love Me Again,” “Sea Shell,” “Barefoot in Baltimore,” “Sit With the Guru,” and many more—all mastered from the stereo UNI reels in definitive 180 gram editions!

Wake Up... It's Tomorrow

Wake Up...It’s Tomorrow, The Strawberry Alarm Clock’s second album, is what many fans consider the most ambitious musical statement of the band’s career. Includes “Tomorrow,” “Sit with the Guru,” and the haunting “Pretty Song from Psych-Out,” theme of the cult-classic film of the same name, on 180 gram vinyl.

The World In A Seashell

More gentle grooves and soaring voices! An adventurous mixture of psychedelia and lush pop, The World In A Sea Shell includes “Love Me Again,” a nod to their earlier, harder sound, plus “Sea Shell,” “Barefoot in Baltimore” and other day-glo psych masterpieces on 180 gram vinyl.

The Best of The Strawberry Alarm Clock

The Best of Strawberry Alarm Clock is a vintage collection from 1970 that includes key tracks from all four of the band’s albums—“Incense and Peppermints” among them—plus the rarely heard non-LP singles “Desiree” and “Starting Out the Day,” now on 180 gram vinyl.

Order your choice or all three at Sundazed!

Alan Parsons Project - I Robot (Legacy)

The art of the concept album, as developed and refined by the Alan Parsons Project over the course of their 10 albums released between 1976 and 1987, is celebrated with a Deluxe Edition release of I Robot (Legacy Edition). The first record of this commemorative package will comprise of a newly remastered version of the original album, which has generated multi-platinum worldwide sales and included the U.S. Top 40 single, "I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You." The second record features 14 bonus tracks from the Sony Music archives, nine of which are previously unreleased.

The production of I Robot (Legacy Edition) has been personally overseen by Alan Parsons and Sally Woolfson, the daughter of APP songwriter, manager, lead singer and musician, the late Eric Woolfson (1945-2009). The accompanying 8-page booklet includes a new liner notes essay by Alan Parsons, plus the lyrics as published in the original LP, rare archival photography, and other memorabilia. 180 gram audiophile vinyl / 8 page booklet / Gatefold sleeve

Roger Mcguinn - Roger Mcguinn

After leaving The Byrds, front man Roger McGuinn released a self-titled solo album to great critical acclaim in 1973. Going back to basics, McGuinn does what he does best: his unique recipe of energetic Folk Rock combined with his strong voice delivers a compelling album. His newfound artistic freedom didn't stop him from inviting friends like Bob Dylan on "I'm So Restless", frequent Dylan collaborator Jacques Levy as co-songwriter and his old The Byrds band mates on "My New Woman" to appear on his album. Even Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys joins in on "Draggin'" and David Crosby can also be heard on this album. Roger McGuinn hasn't been available on vinyl for over 25 years! 180 gram audiophile vinyl and Insert

Charles Mingus - Changes Two

It's been almost 40 years since Charles Mingus' Changes Two was released yet the album is still widely regarded as a timeless classic. Recorded in 1974 at Atlantic Recording Studios in New York between Christmas and New Year's Eve, the follow-up to Changes One contains definitive versions of the Mingus classic "Orange Was The Colour Of Her Dress, Then Slik Blue", trumpetist Jack Walrath's "Black Bats and Poles," and Sy Johnson's "For Harry Carney."

Finally available on newly glistening black 180 gram audiophile vinyl gold, this is the first vinyl re-issue since its original 1975 release!

Donovan - Barabajagal

British Folk singer Donovan found his creative peak on Barabajagal (1969), allowing him to open up the American Pop market to his unique brand of music. The album contains standout tracks like "Atlantis", "Superlungs My Supergirl" and the title track, the latter two being performed with The Jeff Beck Group as backing band. Furthermore, Donovan collaborated with Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones and guitarist Big Jim Sullivan on several songs.   180 gram audiophile vinyl

Wooden Shjips - Back to Land

Wooden Shjips’ rise to prominence from the psychedelic underground to the rock and roll overground has been a steady sojourn. With each consecutive release, the band has found new ways of transforming heady psychedelic rock into minimalist masterpieces, bridging the gap between the woozy freeness of Les Rallizes Denudes and Crazy Horse and the tightly wound simplicity of Suicide and the Velvet Underground. Back To Land, the quartet’s follow-up to West, is the first Wooden Shjips record to be conceived outside of San Francisco. Ripley Johnson and Omar Ahsanuddin moved to Oregon, where the lush climates became a major influence on the songwriting. The band’s scope expanded to include more earthy, grounded tones, such as the acoustic guitar, without abandoning their modernist psych core.

There is an increased brightness to many of the songs on Back To Land, an easiness with which the band has flirted with in the past but never fully realized until now. The nervy urgency of West has evolved into an assured confidence, from the alliterative, interlocking guitar and organ groove of “Ruins” to the languidly compelling guitar solos of “Servants.” The addition of the acoustic guitar to the band’s textural palate is coupled here with some of the most melodically direct songs the band has written.

Still, there are still plenty of signature Shjips songs, with distorted riffs, modal keys, and a steady, crisp drum sound unfolding intensely while the elongated melodic guitar lines drift in and out of the foreground. On Back to Land this energy is captured in clear detail, designed as an immersive experience rather than a passive blasting. Back To Land was laid to tape at Jackpot Recording Studios in Portland by Kendra Lynn and mixed by Larry Crane. It was recorded over an 11-day session, resulting in some of the most detailed and spacious recordings of their career.

Back To Land is a breakthrough record for the Wooden Shjips: nuanced, varied and utterly addictive. The band will be touring extensively in the US and Europe November through February.

This is a pre-order for November 12th street date.  All orders containing Back To Land will ship close to the November 12th street date.

CD version is packaged in a 4 panel mini-LP style gatefold package with high gloss UV printing that is then inserted into a custom die-cut O-Card slipcase.

LP version is pressed on opaque pink vinyl and packaged in a heavy duty old-style tip-on gatefold jacket with an artworked flood on the pocket (ala Neil Young "On the Beach").  The jacket also features high gloss UV printing and is housed in a deluxe die cut slipcase. A free download coupon is included. For a limited time all mailorder customers ordering the vinyl LP edition will receive a bonus 7" featuring two non-album tracks : "Colours" and "These Shadows (Acoustic Version)". The pink vinyl edition is ONLY available through Thrill Jockey mailorder and the band's merch table.

In addition to these deluxe packages ALL mailorder customers who pre-order the CD or LP edition will also receive a free download of the non-album 7" track in advance.  "These Shadows (Acoustic Version)" will be released on ITunes on Sept 16th.  At that time all pre-order customers will begin receiving a complimentary download of the track.

from north of our border, a new record store is branching out!

Press Release:
KOPS RECORDS COMMITS TO FUTURE OF VINYL WITH 2ND LOCATION

At a time when the music industry struggles to monetize music and record stores are either closing or focusing on DVD's and memorabilia, Kops Records is expanding. Toronto's oldest independent record store in business since 1976 on Queen West is opening a second location in the Annex on September 28, 2013.

What sets Kops Records apart from most other record stores is the commitment to the history of recorded music. Time spent in the store most often results in discovering new (or old) music or learning about obsolete recording formats such as Edison wax cylinders from the late 1800's.
Nick and Martin Koppel run the family owned business and its their passion for music of all genres that keep them looking to the future. "Although there have been much anticipated albums re-issued, there are many more that haven't been," says Nick. "The history of recorded music is primarily on vinyl and Kops Records prides itself with presenting and preserving the history of music."

Kops is a leading source of deep roots-based music across all genres with sections dedicated to rock, jazz, hip hop, blues, country, soul, comedy, soundtracks and more including an extensive Canadian collection representing a century of recorded music. In addition to the beloved LPs, the store also stocks 78s and the largest collection of 45s in Canada.

With the new location, Kops will continue their tradition of hosting live performances with a jam space in the basement and a performance space in the garage at the back of the store. Many activities are planned for opening day with performances to be announced soon.

KOPS RECORDS OPENING DAY: Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 592 Bloor West.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 16, 2013

DEAR JERRY: Thanks to the award-winning documentary "Searching for Sugar Man," I discovered Sixto Rodriguez, the Sugar Man many people were trying to find.

Rodriguez, a lifelong downtown Detroit resident, is an amazingly distinctive singer-songwriter who sold millions of albums overseas, yet, until the 2012 film, virtually no one in America ever heard of him.

Now I'm trying to obtain all of his recordings, and I need your help.

I have the soundtrack, with its 14 songs, but how many more are out there?

Unfortunately, in the film's March 6, 1998 Cape Town concert, immediately after "I Wonder," he sings something that is definitely not on the soundtrack. It's also not captioned on the screen, like many of the others. Can you identify it?

Besides that one, and those actually on the soundtrack, what are his other songs? And are they available?
—Luke Murphy, Stevens Point, Wis.

DEAR LUKE: First, the unidentified tune in the film that's not on the soundtrack is "Forget It." Ironically, it seems that's exactly what they did.

Completing your Rodriguez collection is easier than you might have thought, and you can do so without spending hundreds of dollars for his original Sussex LPs.

You'll need Light in the Attic's 2012 reissue of "Cold Fact" (LITA-036). That gives you these 12 tracks originally issued in 1971 on Sussex (SXBS-7000), that now sells in the $400 to $600 range:

"Crucify Your Mind"
"Forget It"
"Gommorah (A Nursery Rhyme)"
"Hate Street Dialogue"
"I Wonder"
"Inner City Blues"
"Jane S. Piddy"
"Like Janis"
"Only Good For Conversation"
"Rich Folks Hoax"
"Sugar Man"
"This Is Not A Song, It's an Outburst: Or, the Establishment Blues"

Also get Light in the Attic's 13-track repackage of "Coming from Reality" (LITA-038). With this 2009 edition you have the 10 songs issued in 1972 on the second, and less pricey ($150), Sussex LP (SXBS-7012), plus three bonus cuts:

"A Most Disgusting Song"
"Can't Get Away" (Bonus)
"Cause"
"Climb Up on My Music"
"Halfway Up the Stairs"
"Heikki's Suburbia Bus Tour"
"I Think of You"
"I'll Slip Away" (Bonus)
"It Started Out So Nice"
"Sandrevan Lullaby-Lifestyles"
"Silver Word"
"Street Boy" (Bonus)
"To Whom It May Concern"

You should be able to pick up the two Light in the Attic albums for $20 to $40 each, and both are audiophile 180-gram vinyl.

With those two, you'll have all 15 songs from the film, including "Forget It," along with eight others from the two Sussex collections.

The stray in the herd is "I'll Slip Away," the A-side of a 1967 single (Impact 1031) that is credited to Rod Riguez. The flip is "You'd Like to Admit It," a tune not yet found on any album.

Having the complete works of Rodriguez — just 26 songs, all written by him — is easily accomplished, and not too costly, at least for now. For this tally, more than one version of a song (e.g., studio/live) is still counted as just one.

As for collecting the body of his work, the soundtrack (Light in the Attic 289) is unnecessary. All of those tunes are also on the two LITA albums.

The movie that won the Oscar for Best Documentary (2012) in the U.S. was similarly honored with the comparable award in virtually every country where such a prize exists. It literally crushed the competition.

Referring to "Searching for Sugar Man" merely as an award-winning documentary is like calling the Grand Canyon a gully.

IZ ZAT SO? From 1967 through 1971, Sixto Rodriguez had only three singles and two LPs. Though he continued to write songs, and even record a few, as of now there are no new recordings available.

In 2008, Light in the Attic began repackaging his 1960s and '70s work in the U.S., while other labels licensed his material overseas, usually with much greater success. In some countries, the result has been gold and platinum record awards.

On those occasions when he traveled from Detroit to South Africa and Australia, he played venues with 5,000 to 20,000 seats, and each performance was completely sold-out.

The wild reaction he received from those frenzied crowds, even screaming and applauding while he just stood there waiting to sing, can only be likened to Elvis and the Beatles.

After such a tour, Rodriguez would return to his inner-city home half a world away where he could walk the streets and not be recognized. One would think "Searching for Sugar Man" would have changed that.

Oh yeah, he also gave his earnings from those tours to his family and friends.

Grateful Dead - Wake of the Flood

For the Grateful Dead, Wake of the Flood ushered in an exciting new era of change and potential. The band elected to depart Warner Bros. and start its own record label. A new lineup emerged after keyboardist/vocalist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan passed away and the group landed jazz-schooled pianist Keith Godchaux and his wife, Donna, who gave the ensemble a new option in the form of a dedicated backing vocalist. Having road-tested a batch of new originals, the collective eagerly sought to expand its broad musical palette in the form of a large-scale studio LP that involves horn sections, violin, and choral figures. Diverse, unique, and mellow, 1973's Wake of the Flood overflows with the luminous vision, stellar songwriting, and ensemble reciprocity made possible by its historical circumstances and inspired creators.

turntables now available from our friends at SpinCleanRecordWasher

Designed and engineered to achieve outstanding performance way beyond the expectations of a product at this price point.

Excellent build quality, reliability and ease of use combine to make a product which will offer a lifetime of musical enjoyment. Omitting all the usual gimmicks allows us to concentrate the manufacturing costs on the high quality parts necessary to reproduce records accurately.

Using a manual speed change rather than an automatic mechanism, eliminates speed inconsistencies and reduces wear of the drive belt. The money we save is spent across the design including a new hand assembled RB101 tonearm, precision main bearing, phenolic resin platter and a high quality low vibration motor which would normally be used on a turntable costing two or three times the amount.

The minimalist design of the Rega RP1 and the use of extremely high quality components ensure that this turntable will last for many years. The RP1 is the first in a new generation of Rega turntables offering far greater performance than their predecessors.

We are confident the performance of this amazing new product will impress you. Rest assured the only thing entry level about the RP1 is the price!

Cheap Trick - In Color

1977's, In Color is Cheap Trick's second album release and the songs and music are as impressive as the band's debut. Melodic, gritty, and just a rockin' good time, the record is one of rock's best ever sets of lip-smacking, hip-shaking, guitar-driven, harmony-coated super-songs.

The album contains the studio version of "I Want You To Want Me" that would go on to become one of their biggest hits a few years later when it was released on the "At Budakon" album, along with four other tracks from this record  ("Hello There," "Big Eyes," "Clock Strikes Ten" and "Come On, Come On") and these original versions have all the energy of that classic live set.

Producer Tom Werman understood the band's pop dynamic and brought out the best in the individual members - this is pop/rock written and performed by young adults and it's as close to perfection as pop-metal/power-pop gets. Aside from the craftsmanship, the album has genuine heart and a fun attitude. Cheap Trick is a band that never took itself too seriously as famously illustrated on the gatefold LP jacket with pretty-boys, singer Robin Zander and bassist Tom Petersson, looking cool in full color astride motorcycles on the front cover while the geek-squad, drummer Bun E. Carlos and guitarist Rick Nielsen, rest on motor bikes, in black and white and upside-down, on the back.

Jethro Tull -  Live At Montreux

"A landmark release …..one of their most satisfying albums in years.”  Jethro Tull is one of the most successful bands of all time.  In 2003, Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull made a visit to the Montreux Festival.  The concert was a musical triumph combining semi-acoustic and full-on electric performances of some of their best known and loved recordings. The near-perfect set list has something for every kind of Tull fan for this live album shows Tull at all stages of their career, gentle melodic numbers, hard driving rock anthems and several tracks that mix these approaches along with a number of additional musical styles together. Noteworthy to the double-album package are Ian Anderson's witty and informative liner notes.

Natalie Merchant's Motherland album (2001) is dedicated to the victims of the 9-11 plane crashes, which occurred just days after recordings were finished.

Experienced producer and artist T. Bone Burnett brings his expertise to the table, which pays off in terms of its aural expression and positioning Merchants songs in one coherent, excellent album. Her voice has deepened and her lyrics are socially conscious and intelligent, as always. Musically, each song stands on its own and fits seamlessly into the collection of tracks that make up Motherland.

Bob James - One

On Bob James' first solo album One, he enlisted a string of experienced Jazz players including Steve Gadd and Idris Muhammad on drums, Grover Washington on sax and Gary King on bass.

Led by the maestro himself on keyboards, One (1974) is a lush, experimental Jazz Funk record, excitingly hovering at the forefront of where music can take your soul.

Produced by Creed Taylor and recorded at the famous Van Gelder Studios, the record is a monument of progressive musical greatness. Liner notes are included inside the gatefold sleeve. Classic stuff, including the B-Boy anthem "Nautilus", One is a must have!  180 gram audiophile vinyl

Rory Gallagher - Stage Struck

Although this is the third live album of Rory Gallagher, Stage Struck proves that no live recording of Rory and his trio ever got boring and as they were simply never the same. This album captures him on a grinding world tour in 1979 and 1980, pumping out blues-rockers with requisite aggression in cities all around the world as San Francisco, Melbourne, Paris and Los Angeles. The material on this release is from his classic albums Calling Card, Photo-Finish  and Top Priority

Backed by his fierce as ever rhythm section of Gerry McAvoy on bass and Ted McKenna on drums there is no doubt that Rory & Co. we're ever trying to present a subtle set for music listeners. Opener "Shin Kicker" continued by Wayward Child set the mood for this high tempo album and as this release might sounds more rushed than the other two live albums, incendiary riffs, groovy organ hooks and intense vocals gives you the feeling of being one of the front row fans at a concert of this guitar legend.

TÝR - Valkyrja

Valkyrja, the 7 full-length album from the Faroe Islands natives TÝR, is a concept album with a story line based loosely around an anonymous Viking age warrior who leaves his woman and goes off to impress the Valkyrie on the battlefield so that she may bring him to Valhalla, or to Fólkvangr, the home of Freyja—the goddess associated with love, sexuality, beauty, fertility, gold, sorcery, war, and death. One can say the album is also indirectly about women and how they affect men and what men will do to impress and obtain women. Frontman and founder Heri Joensen goes on to explain; "the woman that the warrior leaves may represent the earthly women. Freyja, The Lady Of The Slain, may represent the perfection of Women, and the Valkyrie is the link between the two, taking men from earthly to godly women."
