Mike Dillon - Band of Outsiders (Red Vinyl)

How many artists can claim praise like “punk rock provocateur,” “jazz vibraphone visionary” and “percussion master”? There’s only one: Texas-native Mike Dillon. Whether through his affiliation with artists such as Les Claypool, Ani DiFranco and Brave Combo, collaborations like Garage A Trois, The Dead Kenny Gs and Critters Buggin or bands he’s fronted, including Billy Goat and Hairy Apes BMX, the one and only Mike D has set his own standard for 25 years now.

With his latest effort, Band of Outsiders, Dillon has conjured the perfect storm of all these past endeavors. His manic creative vision meets its match in three young New Orleans-based musicians. Carly Meyers—whom Dillon describes as “a High Priestess of Trombone channeling the energy of Iggy Pop through the chops of JJ Johnson in a second-line”—provides harmonic counterpoint to his vibes and percussion (“All Walks of Life”) as she simultaneously ups the band’s art-rock ante (“Carly Hates The Dubstep”). The rhythm section of bassist Patrick McDevitt and drummer Adam Gertner turns on a dime between snarling punk rock assaults (“Homeland Insecurity”), deep funky go-go (“Head”), ska grooves (“Hero The Burro”) and experimental hip-hop beats (“7AM At The Jazzfest”) with all points covered in between.

Dillon and his band have relentlessly toured the States, both headlining and opening for artists like Fishbone, Clutch and Primus. As a result, these 13 songs bristle with a group mind, spilling over with the visions invoked during countless dead-of-night drives and landing with a sonic assault only possible from a unit that’s played 400-plus shows over the last two years. Indeed, Band of Outsiders is a snapshot of four musicians hitting full stride.

“Two tours of Mexico and a steady dose of Brazilian music was the jumping off point for these new songs,” says Dillon. “Add our love for The Melvins, Deerhoof, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, Trouble Funk and all things New Orleans and this album surpasses our intention to make the freakiest, most vibrant dance music on the planet.”

Marco Benevento ‘Between the Needles and Nightfall’

Between The Needles & Nightfall was conceived at Trout Recording in Brooklyn, NY where engineer Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Akron/Family) tracked Marco Benevento and his trio over three days. To achieve the colors he envisioned, Benevento recorded on a baby grand piano bolstered by guitar pick-ups, amplifiers and a myriad of pedals and circuit bent toys, while overdubbing Moog, Optigan, Mellotron and Farfisa. He then transferred the tracks to his home studio, taking the next two months to cut, loop and shape the pieces into full-fledged songs.

For the final mixes, Benevento handed off his work to three of his favorite engineers: Mell Dettmer (Sunn O), (Eyvind Kang), Jesse Lauter (Low Anthem, Elvis Perkins) and Vid Cousins (Amon Tobin, Kid Koala). The results range from the day-glo electro-rock of It Came From You to the simply-stated lullaby Ila Frost to the shimmering Arcade Fire-meets-Brad Mehldau anthem Two Of You.

With the release of Between The Needles & Nightfall, Marco Benevento continues to define himself as one of the most prolific new voices of his era, blurring genres from song to song, and more often from measure to measure, with his own take on simple pop pleasures, dance party rave-ups and art jazz experimentation.

new releases from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

LAMB - LAMB

Lamb's musical style is a distinctive mixture of Jazz, Dub, Breaks and Drum & Bass, with a strong vocal element and, in their later works especially, some acoustic influences. Consisting of producer Andy Barlow, and singer-songwriter Lou Rhodes, they achieved commercial success with two hit singles "Górecki" and "Gabriel", the first one being included on their eponymous debut album (1996).

The Music On Vinyl reissue features an insert with exclusive liner notes written by Lou Rhodes, giving a unique inside perspective on the production of the album. Apart from the "Cotton Wool" Fila Brazilia Mix, we've included 2 exclusive bonus tracks that have not been issued on vinyl before. A remix of "Trans Fatty Acid" by acclaimed producing duo Kruder & Dorfmeister, and the "Górecki" Global Communication Mix are featured on the D-side.

To celebrate this first ever vinyl reissue, we're pressing 1000 numbered copies on Green/Black vinyl!
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Insert with exclusive liner notes written by Lou Rhodes
  • Includes 3 bonus tracks
  • First pressing of 1000 numbered copies on green/black vinyl

IN THE VALLEY BELOW - BELT

Vocalist Angela Gail puts it frankly: In The Valley Below make "mostly music that we would want to listen to," an honest and unapologetic statement from the Los Angeles duo, rounded out by vocalist/guitarist Jeffrey Jacob.

In The Valley Below is hushed swirls of male and female vocals forged with dark stories of brooding riddles and romance. Jeffrey grew up in the storied musical town of Memphis, given a guitar at the age of 13 and creating music from that point forward. Angela left the binding depths of a "mostly cold and cloudy town in Michigan," for a life at sea, finding initial songwriting inspiration while living on a small boat in the Caribbean.

In The Valley Below was created when these two found each other, having crossed paths in artistic circles after they separately made their way to Los Angeles. The duo honed their craft together, using faithful archetypes as their inspiration, "Our biggest inspiration is powerful subjects like sex, crime and religion. And how that fits into the lives we've chosen, our dreams and struggles, mistakes and heartbreaks."
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Printed innersleeve
  • Including poster
  • Including download card
  • Limited first pressing of 500 numbered copies on white vinyl!

GRANT LEE BUFFALO - FUZZY

Grant Lee Buffalo is an Americana/indie Rock band based in Los Angeles, consisting of Grant Lee Phillips (vocals and guitar), Paul Kimble (bass) and Joey Peters (drums). All three were previously members of another Los Angeles band, Shiva Burlesque. They toured with major bands, including R.E.M., Pearl Jam, the Smashing Pumpkins and The Cranberries.

Their 1993 debut Fuzzy was a confident and solidly crafted piece of work, with Phillips' marvelous voice, fine and evocative songs. Fuzzy is deep and mysterious stuff, but also very beautiful and crafted with imagination and care. It's no wonder Grant Lee Buffalo became critic's darlings shortly after this was released. Original vinyl copies are in short supply, making this reissue a very welcome one!
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl

THE JAYHAWKS - SMILE

Originally released in 2000, Smile marked a move away from The Jayhawks' long-time Alt-country style to a more Pop approach. However, one thing never changes on their albums; the blissful melodies and well-constructed songs.  As soon as you hear the opening notes of album opener "Smile", there'll be a smile on your face.

Both Rolling Stone and Spin magazine named The Jayhawks one of the most influential bands of the decade, so the band in fact had all the reasons to smile. This LP, produced by Bob Ezrin (Lou Reed, Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper, KISS), is just another piece of excellent work by The Jayhawks. It's got it all: hooks, riff, harmonies and melodies.

RUFUS & CHAKA KHAN - STOMPIN' AT THE SAVOY

Stompin' at the Savoy – Live (1983) was a major commercial success for Rufus And Chaka Khan, reaching #4 on Billboard's R&B Albums Charts. This double-record set features three sides of live material recorded over multiple dates at the Savoy Theatre in New York. The band stunned packed audiences with an energetic set of old favorites and new material, such as "Tell Me Something Good", "You Got the Love", "Sweet Thing", "At Midnight (My Love Will Lift You Up)", and "Do You Love What You Feel" as well as "What Cha' Gonna Do for Me" from Khan's 1981 solo album of the same name.

The D-side includes four new studio recordings of which two were released as singles, "Ain't Nobody" and "One Million Kisses". "Ain't Nobody" became Rufus' final #1 R&B hit and won them a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1984. The song was featured in the movie Breakin' and its soundtrack.
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Gatefold sleeve

TOTO - MINDFIELDS

Mindfields is the 10th studio record by Toto, as originally released in 1999. The album saw the return of original Toto singer Bobby Kimball, who had left the band once their breakthrough album Toto IV was released back in 1982. Kimball and axe slinger Steve Lukather share lead vocals, dividing these duties approx 60/40.

As always with Toto, the playing is tight. What else would one expect from these veteran musicians? Apart from Lukather and Kimball, Toto in '99 consisted of David Paich (keyboards), Mike Porcaro (bass) and Simon Phillips (drums, who replaced original drummer Jeff Porcaro after his fatal heart attack in 1992). The record was nominated for a Grammy in the category Best Engineered Album, Non Classical.  180 gram audiophile vinyl

Seer - Golden Retriever

Golden Retriever is the duo of Matt Carlson (modular synthesizer) and Jonathan Sielaff (bass clarinet), two musicians who blur the line between sounds created electronically and acoustically. The pair formed Golden Retriever in 2008 and began to develop a language informed by the practices of free improvisation as well as the tradition of American experimental electronic composers like Alvin Curran & David Behrman. Golden Retriever creates music that is creatively challenging and structurally complex while remaining inviting and emotionally dynamic rather than adopting a confrontational stance toward the listener.

Seer, their second release for Thrill Jockey, was recorded and assembled over the course of two years at the artists’ studio “Worksound” in Portland, OR. The relaxed timetable gave Carlson and Sielaff an opportunity to write based around new instruments and techniques and to spend considerable time meticulously editing the work. This extends the process employed on their Thrill Jockey debut Occupied with the Unspoken, composing and arranging using editing as a compositional tool.

The opening track “Petrichor” shows Carlson using an 11-limit just intonation system and can, if listened to at a significant volume, create otoacoustic emissions: the generation of new resonance within the inner-ear as a rectification of two perfectly toned and opposing frequencies. The use of this phenomenon as musical material was pioneered by Maryanne Amacher in her sound installations of the 70s and 80s. The song “Sharp Stones” finds Sielaff weaving complex melodic phrases over Carlson’s bed of synth-processed piano sounds, toying with the gestures of modal free jazz. Their ability to move between abstract sound exploration and traditionally engaging musical structures is demonstrated perfectly on “Flight Song,” which features a mantra-like bass clarinet melody beholden to shimmering synthesizer patterns. Golden Retriever’s compositions are inviting and relentlessly listenable, embracing both emotional depth and wild abandon without betraying the hidden framework of complexity within.

Seer is released on LP-only, pressed on virgin vinyl and packaged in a stunning jacket with an artworked inner sleeve and free download coupon.

This is a pre-order for March 25, 2014 street date. All orders containing Seer will ship on or before the street date.

The Skull Defekts - Dances in Dreams of the Known Unknown

When the Skull Defekts entered the studio in the Spring of 2013 with nothing more than a collection of loosely organized riffs, they set out to record their most extreme, challenging rock record. Much to the band’s surprise, what emerged were their most incessantly listenable, approachable songs to date. The Defekts merge the coarse vitality of punk with the ritualism of folk dances to create music that is addictive, wondrously discordant, and rooted in a belief in the overwhelming power of pure sound. Dances in Dreams of the Known Unknown is the Swedish group’s third release as a quintet, with the legendary Daniel Higgs joining Joachim Nordwall and Daniel Fagerstroem on vocal duties and acting as the group’s spiritual ringleader. The Defekts have long acted as the backbone of the Swedish experimental underground, but since their 2011 breakthrough Peer Amid, the group has emerged at the vanguard of a new wave of radical Scandinavian rock music alongside Iceage and the Posh Isolation label.

From the opening patter of “Pattern of Thoughts” to the propulsive chants of “Cyborganization,” Dances in Dreams of the Known Unknown feeds on the tension between lean and bright song production and the hefty, sometimes surreal sounds produced by Nordwall and Fagerstroem’s guitars. Daniel Higgs’ spontaneous, metaphoric poetry is as perplexing as ever, but it is delivered with a clarity not heard since his days fronting Lungfish. Album centerpiece “The Known Unknown” is centered around a driving riff, with Nordwall turning the song’s title into a mantra as intense as it is transcendent. Throughout, the group anchors their riffs with exotic sustained chords, adding a distinctly Carnatic flavor.

Nordwall’s long history in the European experimental music community serves to reinforce the group’s place as one of the most forward-thinking rock bands working in the continent today. In addition to running iDEAL Recordings since 1998, Nordwall has released collaborative recordings with Mika Vainio of Pan Sonic, Kevin Drumm, and Mats Gustafsson, whose FIRE! Orchestra he recently joined. Although the Skull Defekts have ceased to perform or record noise music, that adventurous spirit is still a dominant part of their music.

The Skull Defekts will tour Europe and the US as a quintet.

LP version includes an artworked inner sleeve and free download card. High gloss UV printing on LP jacket. EXCLUSIVE LP MAILORDER EDITION AVAILALBE : 500 copies are pressed on gold vinyl and will only be sold on Thrill Jockey's website and the band's merch table.

This is a pre-order for April 8, 2014 street date. All orders containing Dances In The Dreams Of The Known Unknown will ship on or before street date.

Daughter of Everything - Vertical Scratchers

Vertical Scratchers is John Schmersal (ex-Brainiac/Enon, live Caribou, and Crooks on Tape) and Christian Beaulieu (ex-Triclops!/Anywhere).

One of the most persistent elements you will hear throughout the record is the percussive nature in which the guitars were played and recorded. Guitar playing is vertical scratching, and in this band, the guitar strums are almost louder than the amps. Most Vertical Scratchers songs clock in under the two-minute mark but often go in twice as many directions as your average-length song. Pop deception. Think the Kinks with a Buzzcocks brevity.

Daughter of Everything was recorded live in Los Angeles at The Smell in September of 2012. The special guest appearance lead vocal from Robert Pollard was recorded at Waterloo Sound in Ohio by Todd Tobias.

Orders will include a Vertical Scratchers guitar pick while supplies last.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 10, 2014

DEAR JERRY: While flipping through some of my thrift store acquisitions, I ran into a record by Eddie Dee and the Moonlighters titled "Let's Go Steady."

Seeing it was written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield, I thought it would be the "Let's Go Steady Again" that was a 1960s hit for Sedaka.

Well, it is the same song as "Let's Go Steady Again," but NOT the one by Sedaka. It's the one recorded by Sam Cooke in the 1950s, and written by J.W. Alexander.

Then who really wrote it? Alexander or Sedaka-Greenfield?
—Denny Patrick, Evansville, Ind.

DEAR DENNY: James W. Alexander, Cooke's friend and eventual business partner, wrote "Let's Go Steady Again." When coupled with the Cooke classic, "Only Sixteen" (Keen 3-2022), the record reached the Top 30 in the summer of '59.

In 1963, a completely different "Let's Go Steady Again," one written by Sedaka and Greenfield, became a hit for Neil.

Four years later, Arthur Conley revived the Sam Cooke tune, but with the truncated title, "Let's Go Steady." Whether or not Conley's label (Atlantic-Atco) dropped the "Again" to avoid confusion with the Sedaka-Greenfield tune is not yet known.

Regardless, when "Let's Go Steady" was chosen for the B-side of "Sweet Soul Music" (Atco 6463), an eventual million seller, it meant a pretty payday for Mr. Alexander. Fortunately, he is properly credited on this single.

Also unclear is why Eddie Dee's 1967 release, on his own label (Dee 1002), does not credit Alexander. It is possible that someone involved with Dee Records thought Eddie's song was the one by Sedaka and Greenfield.

DEAR JERRY: Even though I lived through it first hand, I was amazed by your recent column that examined the number of foreign hits a week before and then a year after "I Want to Hold Your Hand."

Before the Beatles arrived in America, only five percent of the Top 100 were by overseas artists. A year later, that percentage leaped to 27.

But please don't stop there.

I would like to see the same comparison, but for album sales. I'm guessing the change is not nearly so dramatic, what with teens primarily buying singles and not LPs.
—Perry Fitch, Manassas Park, Va.

DEAR PERRY: You would think.

The British Invasion is both blamed and credited for varied effects on the American music scene, but one highly profitable change for the industry was the enormous surge in album sales to teenagers.

Understandably, crazed fans of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc., were not content having two songs on a 45 when an LP with a dozen tracks could be had.

As we did for the singles comparison, we'll use the charts for the first week of January 1964 (pre-Invasion) and 12 months later. Unlike the singles chart, with 100 slots, Billboard's LP chart in the mid-'60s listed 150 titles.

To recap, for songs on 45s, overseas artists — three solo acts and two duos — accounted for five percent of the Top 100 in Jan. 1964, and 27 percent a year later.

Now for the overseas artists with charted LPs, and that week's ranking:

January 1964

1. The Singing Nun ("The Singing Nun") (Belgium)
7. Los Indios Tabajaras ("Maria Elena") (Brazil)
105. Miriam Makeba ("The World of Miriam Makeba") (South Africa)
141. Bert Kaempfert and His Orchestra ("Lights Out, Sweet Dreams") (Germany)

Here we have two females and two instrumentalists, but not one vocal group in the pack, and no one from the UK. Only two are in the Top 100. Together they account for only three and one-third percent of the Top 150.

January 1965

3. Rolling Stones ("12 x 5")
6. Beatles ("A Hard Day's Night")
7. Beatles Documentary ("The Beatles Story")
39. Animals ("The Animals")
52. Chad & Jeremy ("Yesterday's Gone")
59. Manfred Mann ("The Manfred Mann Album")
70. Beatles ("Second Album")
73. Beatles ("Meet the Beatles")
87. Rolling Stones ("The Rolling Stones")
88. Kinks ("You Really Got Me")
98. Beatles ("Beatles '65")
110. Dave Clark Five ("American Tour")
117. Beatles ("Songs, Pictures and Stories of the Fabulous Beatles")
131. Gerry and the Pacemakers ("Second Album")
133. Peter & Gordon ("I Don't Want to See You Again")
137. Dave Clark Five ("Coast to Coast")
141. Beatles ("Introducing the Beatles")
148. Honeycombs ("Here Are the Honeycombs")

My how things have changed. Now we have 18 acts on the chart (16 groups and two duos), all males, all vocalists, and all from the UK.

They have 11 entries in the Top 150 and make up 12 percent of the total chart.

I think you'll find the difference is more dramatic than you expected.

IZ ZAT SO? There are a couple of albums on the January 1965 chart that are unquestionably inspired by the invaders from Liverpool, yet by U.S. performers.

At No. 74 is the Supremes with "A Bit of Liverpool," and No. 79 is "The Chipmunks Sing the Beatles Hits."

Junta Deluxe Edition (On Sale) by Phish

"Junta" is the first full-length studio album from the band Phish. The original 1/4" analog session tapes (recorded in 1988-1989) were mastered by Bernie Grundman Mastering creating an analog-to-analog vinyl master for "Junta Deluxe".

This 3-LP 180g vinyl set was manufactured by Furnace MFG. Original art by Jim Pollock.

"With great sound and better playing, Phish's debut Junta is highly recommended whether you're starting to discover Phish or are backing up to the beginning. It may be a bit long-winded and unfocused, yet it establishes their dedication to musical exploration effectively -- not to mention the typical wild and woolly Phish humor spilling out all over the lengthy tracks." - Steven McDonald (All Music Guide)

New Album Mess Out March 25th

LIARS (Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross) announce details of a unique, exclusive Record Store Day release. “Mess On A Mission” will be released on a limited edition vinyl embedded with string.

Says Angus Andrew: "We talked about the idea for days but weren't at all sure it could physically be done. To us it seemed like such a unique and interesting way to extend the visual language of Mess right inside the music."

“Mess On A Mission”, described by GQ as a "…frantic synthstorm" and by SPIN as "Rave-Punk Ripper" comes backed with remixes from Black Bananas (Jennifer Herrema of Royal Trux / RTX / Drag City) and Silent Servant (Sandwell District / Hospital Productions) plus an exclusive b-side, “Blah Vets”. In celebration of their ongoing global conquest with Exhumed and Skeletonwitch, Relapse Records will be reissuing three long out-of-print LPs from Portland, OR's thrash metal merchants TOXIC HOLOCAUST. The group's now classic albums, Evil Never Dies, Hell on Earth, and An Overdose of Death will all be available on deluxe vinyl on April 15, 2014 and can be pre-ordered from Relapse Mailorder HERE

The album that started it all, 2003's Evil Never Dies, will be available on vinyl for the first time in six years. Hell on Earth, 2005's long out-of-print thrash-punk crossover masterpiece, will be re-issued with the original artwork from Ed Repka (Megadeth, Death, Venom). Finally, 2008's An Overdose of Death will be repressed with gatefold packaging and contains some of the finest metal this side of the 21st century.

Hooded Menace - Effigies Of Evil Deluxe 2xLP (Orange with Exclusive 7")

Finland’s doom/death-lords Hooded Menace make their Relapse debut with ‘Effigies of Evil’, a brutally ripping album of slow-paced, down-tuned ultra-heaviness. Combining the grooving riffs of Black Sabbath and early Cathedral with the fire of classic Autopsy and Asphyx, ‘Effigies Of Evil’ is an instant metal classic. ‘Effigies Of Evil’ is the peak combination of Hooded Menace’s fascination with classic 90s death metal, prototypical 70s doom and cult horror flicks-----a collection of obsessions that any heavy-music fan proudly wears for life. ‘Effigies of Evil’ is a triumphant album of filth, sludge, riffs and groove that transforms cult heroes Hooded Menace into legitimate heavy metal icons.

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah - Bikini Kill

Bikini Kill Records is excited to announce our second reissue - the newly expanded Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah LP featuring seven previously unreleased tracks. It will be released on April 15th, 2014.

The first 500 copies ordered will receive a free, limited edition poster.

Side A of Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah was originally released in 1993 as the BK side of their split record with the UK’s Huggy Bear, to kick off their legendary co-headlining tour of the UK in March of that year. Those tracks were recorded in their Washingon DC basement practice space on a 4 track reel to reel in 1992 by Tim Green (Nation of Ulysses, The Fucking Champs).

Side B features seven songs either recorded live at shows during that era or at Bikini Kill practices.

The LP also includes new photos and liner notes from David Feck (Comet Gain), Erin Smith (Bratmobile), and from the band themselves.

The LP was mastered by TJ Lipple and Bob Weston.

Pre-order includes digital album in the high-quality format of your choice (MP3, FLAC, and more), plus unlimited mobile access using the free Bandcamp listening app. You'll also get the complete album the moment it’s released.

Shipping out on or around 15 April 2014

PolyVinyl Test Pressing Sale -- 15 Titles Being Offered

Making CDs is predictable. You send a master off to the duplication plant and wait for thousands of shiny, identical discs to arrive.

Vinyl is a very different beast. Making a record is an intricate process that starts with the creation of a master lacquer, which is then plated in metal and used to make a negative version of the record, called a stamper, that serves as the basis for mass production.

During this chain of events something can always go wrong --- causing pops, skips, crackles or distortion. You name it, we've heard it many times over.

Which brings us to test pressings, a very necessary part of the vinyl production process that helps catch these sorts of problems before all of the records are manufactured.

By their very nature, test pressings are rare and unique. They're the first taste we receive of each album on vinyl and only a small number are ever made, making them sought after by fans and collectors.

In fact, one of the most frequently asked questions we receive year after year is "Hey fine folks at PV, do you have any test pressings for sale?"

The sad truth is, after a few test pressings are given to PV bands as keepsakes, the remaining copies just sit on a shelf in the dark recesses of our office.

And so, for a limited time, we're giving you the opportunity to bid on these special items and support a great cause (American Humane Association) at the same time!

A variety of titles are being offered in the hope that you see something you like and enjoy the chance to own a special piece of a treasured album.

Titles include:

31Knots The Days and Nights of Everything Anywhere LP
Aloha Here Comes Everyone (Record Store Day Edition) LP
Architecture In Helsinki Places Like This LP
Braid Frankie Welfare Boy Age Five 2xLP
Deerhoof Deerhoof vs. Evil LP

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

from our friends at PolyVinylRecords

Polyvinyl Record Store Day Releases Announced

1. of Montreal - Satanic Panic in the Attic 10 Year Anniversary Reissue

Featuring favorites such as “Disconnect the Dots,” “Lysergic Bliss,” and “Chrissy Kiss the Corpse,” of Montreal’s breakthrough album Satanic Panic in the Attic marked a slight departure from the band’s previous sound due to influences ranging from 1970’s Afro beat to 80’s New Wave.

To celebrate this beloved record’s 10-year anniversary, Satanic Panic in the Attic has been re-mastered for vinyl and is being pressed on 180-gram yellow & light blue wax (limited to 2,000) with a second disc featuring seven additional tracks recorded during the same era. This deluxe double LP re-issue comes packaged in a gatefold jacket that restores the interior artwork to its original full-color design.

2. of Montreal - Jigsaw Puzzle 7"

On their latest full-length Lousy with Sylvianbriar, of Montreal adopted a new songwriting approach (writing retreat in San Francisco), a different recording method (direct to 24-track tape machine), and a fresh group of musicians. Inspired by Dylan, the Stones, Neil Young, and more, Paste declared the record “[a] stunning re-imagining of Barnes' songwriting prowess.”

“Jigsaw Puzzle” was recorded during the same sessions that produced Lousy with Sylvianbriar and is now available as a limited edition 7" for Record Store Day 2014 (limited to 1,500 on light green vinyl). An alternate version of Lousy with Sylvianbriar track “Triumph of Disintegration” is featured on the B-side.

3. Xiu Xiu - Unclouded Sky

During the summer of 2013, Xiu Xiu frontman Jamie Stewart and producer Shahzad Ismaily traveled to Sigur Rós’s personal studio in Iceland. Having access to the space for only one day, Stewart worked on setting down his interpretations of American and Caribbean spirituals using a 1953 Silvertone guitar given to him by his father (producer Michael Stewart), the man who introduced him to religious thought and folk music.

The resulting album, Unclouded Sky, explores themes of death and faith over the course of nine songs originally composed between 1850 and 1920, which are interspersed with field recordings Stewart made in the jungle of Guyana.

Unclouded Sky will be available on 180-gram "cloud colored" vinyl (limited to 1,000).

4. The Dodos - Yours Truly Session 7"

In the fall of 2013, San Francisco-based duo The Dodos reconvened at John Vanderslice’s Tiny Telephone studio (where they recorded their latest full-length Carrier) to re-visit two songs in collaboration with the Magik*Magik Orchestra. Featuring beautiful new arrangements, these special performances of “Substance” and “The Ocean” were captured on film by music website Yours Truly and are now available on yellow vinyl (limited to 1,000) for the first time via this one-time pressing.

5. Saturday Looks Good To Me - Love Will Find You

Love Will Find You was originally released in 2002, but it's never been available on vinyl through retail stores...until now! This classic SLGTM title will now be available on red vinyl (limited to 500) with hand silkscreened jackets from the original artwork.

6. Saturday Looks Good To Me - Saturday Looks Good To Me

Saturday Looks Good To Me's self-released debut album from 2000 was a lo-fi four track take on reinterpreting Motown and oldies radio through a murky crust of noise.

Though the recording finds the project in it's most experimental larval stages, the sparkle and excitement of these earliest basement incantations comes through loud and clear, and many of the songs here became fan favorites as the band grew. The album will now be available for the first time on vinyl through retail stores as an expanded 14-song edition on blue vinyl w/ hand silkscreened jackets from the original artwork (limited to 500).

Aloud Releases "It's Got to Be Now"

It's Got To Be Now, as it was meant to be heard! Limited edition pressing of Aloud's fourth album on individually hand-pressed 12" vinyl. Digital download includes bonus track, "You Will Know".

Pre-order includes immediate download of 1 track in the high-quality format of your choice (MP3, FLAC, and more), plus unlimited mobile access using the free Bandcamp listening app. You'll also get the complete album the moment it’s released.

Hailing from Boston, MA, pop-infused rock 'n roll outfit Aloud blends throaty lead vocals with spine-tingling male/female harmonies accompanied by infectious grooves and hard-hitting riffs.  Henry Beguiristain (lead vocals/guitar) and  Jen de la Osa (lead vocals/guitar)  have been writing songs together since they were teenagers, developing a sound reminiscent of Alabama Shakes, Dr. Dog, Fitz and the Tantrums, The Black Keys, and The Love Language.  They moved from their hometown of Miami, FL to Boston, founded Aloud, and began touring extensively in early 2008 to support their album Fan The Fury. It was during this time their constant rhythm section departed due to conflicting priorities, but in 2009, Aloud welcomed aboard Charles Murphy (bass/backing vocals). In 2010, Aloud released the folkier-edged Exile and toured the U.S. coast-to-coast to promote it, rocking major venues like  Paradise Rock Club (Boston), Mercury Lounge (NYC), The Double Door (Chicago), and Exit/In (Nashville).  Frank Hegyi (drums/percussion) joined as Aloud’s drummer in early 2012, and the four feature their refined, songwriting sensibilities on their forthcoming album It’s Got To Be Now, out 4/1/14.

Earning nominations by the Boston Phoenix for best vocalist and Best Indie Band Aloud is always a crowd favorite. Their audiences can speak volumes about the band’s energetic connection with their fans and passionate stage performance.

Peter Walker - “Second Poem To Karmela" Or Gypsies Are Important

Light In The Attic and the legendary folk/blues/roots label Vanguard Records are proud to begin a series of collaborations under the umbrella Vanguard Vault. The series will explore the vaults of Vanguard and see the reissuing of obscure nuggets, psychedelic weirdness and just some good old-fashioned seminal music.

Originally released in 1968 on Vanguard Records, Peter Walker’s album “Second Poem To Karmela” Or Gypsies Are Important was a ground breaking blend of folk, raga, psychedelia, Eastern and Modal sounds that has remained unsung for decades. While his debut album for Vanguard, Rainy Day Raga, has been reissued several times on LP and CD, this album (his sophomore effort), remains an obscure and hard to find vinyl relic. Until now….

Carefully re-mastered from the original tapes, guitar scholar Glenn Jones recently interviewed Peter Walker for hours and has written a book-deep essay for the CD and LP liner notes that detail Walker’s association with an incredible cross-section of 1960’s counter-culture icons including LSD guru Timothy Leary (Walker personally provided ‘the soundtrack’ to many a trip), he studied raga music with Ali Akbar Khan, and like his close friend Sandy Bull, Walker worked on a fusion of Western and Eastern sounds. Jim Pepper plays flute on Second Poem (he also recorded with The Fugs and Don Cherry), other accompaniment to Walker’s guitar, Sarod and Sitar playing includes violin, organ, tablas, and tamboura.

This is true “acid folk” as interesting, progressive, and memorable as fellow 1960’s world travelers Robbie Basho, Davy Graham, and the Incredible String Band.

•Remastered from the original stereo 1/4" tapes
•LP and CD feature expanded gatefold tip-on jackets and liner notes
•ON-LINE ONLY: First 150 pre-orders get limited pressing on PEACH wax! Don’t sleep! (LIMIT ONE PER CUSTOMER)

KYNG LAUNCH PRE-ORDER BUNDLES AND RELEASE COVER ART FOR NEW STUDIO ALBUM BURN THE SERUM AT MERCHNOW

Burn The Serum To Be Released On April 15th On Razor & Tie

(New York, NY) – Southern California rock trio KYNG has officially launched pre-order bundles for their forthcoming new studio album, Burn The Serum, at MerchNow Bundles include CD, vinyl and variety of t-shirts and hoodies.

Burn The Serum will be released on April 15th through Razor & Tie. The album was produced by Andrew Alekel (Foo Fighters, No Doubt, Queens of The Stone Age, Clutch) and James A. Rota (Sound City, Fireball Ministry) and was recorded at Grandmaster Recorders LTD and Sword & Shield in Hollywood, CA as well as at Studio 606 in Northridge, CA.

On their second full-length album and first for Razor & Tie, the band harks back to the essence of heavy rock 'n' roll, forging thunderous percussion to lightning hot riffs driven by a divine vocal howl. At the same time, they keep their eyes wide open towards the future. KYNG find grandiosity in simplicity. The Los Angeles outfit may only boast three members—Eddie Veliz [vocals/guitar], Pepe Clarke [drums], and Tony Castaneda [bass/backup vocals]—but their collective roar could easily tip the Southern California Richter Scale.

Formed in 2008, KYNG broke out of the City of Angels in 2011 with the group's independent debut Trampled Sun.  The album landed shining critical acclaim for its "California Heavy" sound merging the metallic meanderings of Soundgarden and Queens of the Stone Age with the timeless scope of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. They hit the road with everybody from The Sword and Clutch to Trivium and Megadeth—even being picked to play at Metallica's first-ever Orion Music + More festival. Loudwire raved, “a hard hitting fusion of rocking goodness,” and Ultimate-Guitar added, “if they keep churning out records as good as Trampled Sun, they will be mentioned right up there with Mastodon and the like.”

The band's entire Metal Blade discography: "To Serve Man" (2002), "Humanure" (2004), "Karma.Bloody.Karma" (2006), "The Harvest Floor" (2009), and "Monolith of Inhumanity" (2012) are all being prepared in lavish gatefolds for release. new releases from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

ELVIS PRESLEY - ELVIS 56

Elvis 56 – originally released in 1996 – is a compilation of studio master recordings made by Elvis Presley in 1956. The sessions on this LP took place at RCA Studios in Nashville and New York, as well as at Radio Recorders in Hollywood.

Made up of the hottest tunes from The King's first year at RCA, Elvis 56 is the definitive rock 'n' roll album, including "Heartbreak Hotel", "Blue Suede Shoes", "Hound Dog" and "Rip It Up". The digitally remastered album also includes an insert with rare photos and full recording data.
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • 4 page insert
  • Printed innersleeve
  • Remastered

TONY JOE WHITE - BLACK & WHITE

Released in 1969, Black And White contains some of the best swamp-folk-soul-funk of the era. Hailing from the soggy marshlands of Louisiana, Tony Joe White is nothing but the real thing, his deep voice sounding like it's dredged from the bottom of the swamps itself.

His catchy songs are chock full of witty, sometimes even funny lyrics on rural life in the Dirty South, accompanied by a strong and funky backing band. White tackles cover versions of Johnny Taylor's hit "Who's Making Love" and O.C. Smith's "Little Green Apples", as well as his own material like "Soul Francisco" and his major U.S. hit, "Polk Salad Annie".

Highly recommended for fans of Creedence Clearwater Revival, J.J. Cale and sixties Soul!  180 gram audiophile vinyl

UNCLE TUPELO - NO DEPRESSION

No Depression is cited as one of the most important albums in the alternative country genre. Due to the impact of the album on alternative country, the term 'No Depression' is sometimes used as a synonym for the genre. The album helped kick start a revolution which reverberated throughout the American underground. In 1999, Spin Magazine listed the album as one of the Top 90 Albums of the 90s.

The album's punk attitude, featuring heavy guitars combined with mandolins, fiddles, and banjos, was the brainchild of singers/songwriters Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy. Their lyrical depictions of rural, blue-collar life paint grim portraits of Midwestern existence as life in the twilight zone, split between days working in the factory ("Factory Belt") and nights spent blurry-eyed and wasted ("Whiskey Bottle," "Before I Break").  180 gram audiophile vinyl

BOOKER T AND THE MG'S - SOUL DRESSING =MONO=

When Booker T. Jones and his Memphis Group, or Booker T. & The MGs in short as they're actually known, are playing no one stops to figure out whether their music is Pop, R & B or Jazz. They just know it's good music.

Originally released in 1965, Soul Dressing confirmed why the outfit made a name for itself in the aforementioned fields. The LP includes several of their best selling records such as "Soul Dressing" and "Jellybread". It's no coincidence that so many of their song titles refer to food (their biggest hit, "Green Onions", comes to mind as well), as the MG's simply love good food as much as they do good music. So, please go heavy on the soul dressing!  180 gram audiophile vinyl Mono edition
