ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK - NATURAL BORN KILLERS

Produced by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, the soundtrack to the film Natural Born Killers (1994) was a downright smash in youngster's music tastes of the era. On his approach to compiling the soundtrack, Reznor told MTV: "I suggested to Oliver [Stone] to try to turn the soundtrack into a collage-of-sound, kind of the way the movie used music: make edits, add dialog, and make it something interesting, rather than a bunch of previously released music."

Some songs were written especially for the film or soundtrack, such as "Burn" by Nine Inch Nails. Other songs featured are by artists like Patti Smith, Cowboy Junkies, Leonard Cohen, Jane's Addiction, Dr. Dre and Juliette Lewis. The album has sold 500,000 copies in the United States, making it a Gold record.

THE ANIMALS - COMPLETE ANIMALS

This triple vinyl package includes the complete sessions that The Animals recorded with producer Mickie Most in 1964 and 1965. The 40 songs capture the band at their peak, including most of their best and biggest hits: "House of the Rising Sun", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", "Bring It on Home To Me", "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place", "I'm Crying", "It's My Life" and "Boom Boom."

Many of these songs are covers of vintage R&B/rock tunes by Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, and the like. The Animals produced some great album tracks, such as "I'm Mad Again" (originally by John Lee Hooker), "Worried Life Blues", and "Bury My Body".

After leaving Most, the group would maintain their peak for another year or so despite the departure of one of Rock's all-time finest organists, Alan Price. This compilation has everything that Price recorded with the group, including four previously unreleased cuts and the non-LP Eric Burdon original on the B-side of "It's My Life", "I'm Gonna Change the World."
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Gatefold sleeve
  • First ever 3LP version of this Animals Best-Of

JOE COCKER - LIVE

Joe Cocker Live is a superb live album by Joe Cocker, released in 1990. It was recorded on October 5th, 1989 at Memorial Auditorium in Lowell, Massachusetts with the exception of the last two tracks which were recorded in the studio.

The album features tracks by Dave Mason ("Feelin' Alright"), Randy Newman ("Guilty", "You Can Leave Your Hat On"), The Beatles ("With A Little Help From My Friends"), and the Dennis Wilson / Billy Preston penned hit "You Are So Beautiful".

The album went Platinum in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, and achieved Gold status in France. This is the first ever reissue of this double LP set on 180 gram audiophile vinyl!

  • Live album including 2 studio tracks

BUZZCOCKS - SINGLES GOING STEADY

Singles Going Steady is THE definitive compilation album by English punk band Buzzcocks, first released in 1979. It was the first Buzzcocks album to be released in North America and intended as an introduction to the band for the American public, coinciding with a US tour. After healthy sales on import in the UK over the next two years, and following the group's split in early 1981, the album was belatedly released in the UK as a Greatest Hits album.

Side One features their eight UK single releases from 1977 up to 1979 in chronological order, while Side Two featured their corresponding B-sides, also in chronological order.

NME called it 'is the best Buzzcocks long-player to be realized' and signified the band as follows: 'Employing the most traditional of beat group formations and turning their attention to the most elemental considerations, Shelley and the Buzzcocks created pop of such intense truthfulness it literally hurts." Pitchfork listed Singles Going Steady as 16th best album of the 1970s.  180 gram audiophile vinyl

KALEIDOSCOPE - SIDE TRIPS

Kaleidoscope (originally The Kaleidoscope) was an American psychedelic folk and ethnic band who recorded 4 albums and several singles for Epic Records between 1966 and 1970. Kaleidoscope were one of the progenitors of World Music. Side Trips was the band's 1967 debut album. On the album each member played many instruments; for example, David Lindley played guitar, banjo, fiddle, and mandolin, and Solomon Feldthouse played saz, bouzouki, dobro, vina, oud, doumbek, dulcimer, fiddle, guitar, and vocals.

The group was founded on democratic principles – there was no "leader". The first single, "Please" was released in December 1966. It was produced by Barry Friedman (later known as Frazier Mohawk), as was their first album Side Trips, released in June 1967. The album showcased the group's musical diversity and studio experimentation. It included Feldthouse's "Egyptian Gardens", Darrow's "Keep Your Mind Open", and versions of Cab Calloway's "Minnie the Moocher" and Dock Boggs' "Oh Death".   180 gram audiophile vinyl

NEW RELEASE! Trini Lopez - At PJ's

Special 50th Anniversary Numbered Limited Edition on 200g Vinyl

Hollywood, CA - Exhibit Records announces the release of a Special 50th Anniversary Numbered Limited Edition album of Trini Lopez, "At PJ’s." The 200 gram vinyl record is beautifully presented in a sturdy old style gatefold jacket featuring the original album art work and for the first time includes the lyrics to all the tunes. The back of each album is foil-stamped with its unique number.

With the release of this album in April 1963 Trini Lopez became one of the biggest singing stars of the Folk Revival. Trini Lopez, "At PJ's" made it to #2 on the Billboard charts and stayed in the Top 40 for over a year. The album included the chart-topping "If I Had a Hammer" which reached number one in 36 countries and was a radio favorite for many years. The hit single sold more than 4 million copies and the album sold over a million and was awarded a gold record.

This was the album that made Lopez an instant success and the live party-a-go-go atmosphere of the record did much to put Trini's likable energy over the top. What Lopez did, at the head of a trio was to make folk-pop swing. Other songs include "This Land Is Your Land," and "Gotta Travel On." It could be surmised that by treating such material in this fashion, Lopez had a tiny influence upon the subsequent folk-rock movement...though, Lopez was more the all-around entertainer with a Latin lilt than he was a pure folk singer, so you also get "America" (from West Side Story), "La Bamba," Ray Charles' "What'd I Say," "Volare," and "When the Saints Go Marching In."

The emergent Exhibit Records has rapidly curated an eclectic catalog of classic recordings and gaining notice for exquisite mastering, high quality pressings and detail to the fine art of exceptional package design.

"...raw, energetic, live music - this is Trini at his absolute best…Wonderful songs, brilliantly performed that STAND THE TEST OF TIME...”

Producer: Don Costa
Recorded at PJ's nightclub, West Hollywood, California

Father John Misty 'I Love You, Honeybear' Pre-Order Details

“I Love You, Honeybear is a concept album about a guy named Josh Tillman who spends quite a bit of time banging his head against walls, cultivating weak ties with strangers and generally avoiding intimacy at all costs. This all serves to fuel a version of himself that his self-loathing narcissism can deal with. We see him engaging in all manner of regrettable behavior.

“In a parking lot somewhere he meets Emma, who inspires in him a vision of a life wherein being truly seen is not synonymous with shame, but possibly true liberation and sublime, unfettered creativity. These ambitions are initially thwarted as jealousy, self-destruction and other charming human character traits emerge.  Josh Tillman confesses as much all throughout.

“The album progresses, sometimes chronologically, sometimes not, between two polarities: the first of which is the belief that the best love can be is finding someone who is miserable in the same way you are and the end point being that love isn’t for anyone who isn’t interested in finding a companion to undertake total transformation with. I won’t give away the ending, but sex, violence, profanity and excavations of the male psyche abound.

“My ambition, aside from making an indulgent, soulful, and epic sound worthy of the subject matter, was to address the sensuality of fear, the terrifying force of love, the unutterable pleasures of true intimacy, and the destruction of emotional and intellectual prisons in my own voice.  Blammo.

“This material demanded a new way of being made, and it took a lot of time before the process revealed itself.  The massive, deranged shmaltz I heard in my head, and knew had to be the sound of this record, originated a few years ago while Emma and I were hallucinating in Joshua Tree; the same week I wrote the title track.  I chased that sound for the entire year and half we were recording.  The means by which it was achieved bore a striking resemblance to the travails, abandon and transformation of learning how to love and be loved; see and be seen.  There: I said it.  Blammo.” -Josh Tillman (A.K.A. Father John Misty)

Destroyer's 'Your Blues' Vinyl Reissue Details

On December 2, Merge will reissue Destroyer’s Your Blues on vinyl, marking its first appearance in that format in the US and Europe. Pre-order Your Blues on 180-gram vinyl in the Merge store now, and be sure to look for the many other records we’ve rereleased as part of our 25th anniversary reissue series.

On the occasion of the Destroyer LP reissue, Canadian music writer Michael Barclay wrote of the album:

Your Blues is luxurious pop presented as high drama, the ideal sonic setting for Bejar’s oft-arch, oft-parodied delivery. It’s here, not in front of a rock band, where his voice is actually most at home: in a world where nothing sounds real, and everything is possible and wondrous and exclamatory. Pity the poor believers in “purity” and “authenticity,” tired and meaningless words that should never be applied to any art form, least of all pop music. (“So, Great Pretender, pull a face!”) Bejar’s sloganeering—Your Blues contains some of his most memorable phrases, almost as many as Streethawk—is all the more powerful when presented in contrast to the synthetic veneer.

“People say, ‘They just didn’t want it enough.’ Oh, but we were the Music Lovers!” Destroyer doesn’t want what you think he wants; he doesn’t want what you think he should, as a so-called rock singer. He’s called Destroyer for a reason. On Your Blues, Bejar made it crystal clear that your blues are your business; they have nothing to do with his art or wherever he decides to take it. Dan Bejar never went back to Your Blues—not even while touring the record, which involved the B.C. band Frog Eyes pummeling these songs to the ground as only a Beefheartish art-rock band could. (You can hear the results on the Notorious Lightning EP, featuring six reworked versions of Your Blues songs; it seemed almost an apology to rockist snobs.) Your Blues sounds like nothing else in the Destroyer discography, which is exactly why it should be celebrated, cherished—and reissued on vinyl.

LP includes a coupon for a full download. Pre-orders will ship to arrive on or around the release date of December 2.

Jan and Dean 'Carnival Of Sound' (CD/LP) From Rhino

Jan Berry and Dean Torrence rode a wave of popularity in the early ’60s that earned the So-Cal duo more than a dozen Top 40 hits, including the #1 smash “Surf City.” The group’s good fortune came to a tragic halt in 1966 when Berry suffered debilitating injuries in a car accident near Dead Man’s Curve, a treacherous road that, ironically, was the subject of one of the group’s earlier hits. As he battled tirelessly to recover, Berry spent the next three years recording songs for a new Jan and Dean album to be titled Carnival of Sound. Despite the quality of the music, the album was never released and became one of rock ’n’ roll’s lost treasures, until now.

Rhino Handmade offers two versions of CARNIVAL OF SOUND. The first is a single CD whose 29 songs include mono and stereo mixes of the album along with bonus tracks from the 1966-68 sessions.

The other is a deluxe edition that combines the aforementioned CD with a vinyl version of the album in mono presented in a gorgeous hardbound gatefold jacket. To present a clear and vivid picture of what Berry was up to during this transitional phase, the collection’s producer Andrew Sandoval spent three years carefully reviewing and compiling every tape Berry submitted to Warner Bros. for use on CARNIVAL OF SOUND.

Although Jan cut multiple LP-length acetates of his work at the time, he left behind no definitive track list or sequence for the songs to be included on the album,” he explains in the liner notes. “I created the sequence you hear … by grouping his post-accident tracks together and closing with his pre-accident masters. The two parts of this story have such different flavors that they seem to flow best in this manner.” CARNIVAL OF SOUND opens with “Girl, You’re Blowing My Mind,” an upbeat poppy track that kicks off with a guitar that sounds like a jet engine. It then moves into songs that expand Jan and Dean’s signature sound, including the sitar-infused “Mulholland,” the wild imagery of “Laurel And Hardy,” the poignant ballad “I Know My Mind” and the Indian instrumentation of the title track. To round out the album, a selection of oldies was brought in from sessions Berry cut prior to his accident. Maurice Williams & The Zodiac’s “Stay” was given a quick, 1:35 run-through. The Five Satins’ “In The Still Of The Night” displayed Berry’s new friendship with The Monkees’ Davy Jones, who gave the song some true bubblegum sincerity with a spoken interlude. Berry added horns and woodwinds to his ’66 tracking session for Rusty and Doug Kershaw’s 1961 swamp pop hit “Louisiana Man.”

Among the collection’s bonus tracks are “Don’t Drop It” and a demo for “Laurel And Hardy,” plus two versions of “Girl, You’re Blowing My Mind,” Berry’s final mix and another with an alternate backing track.

The CD contains Berry’s original mono mixes along with new stereo mixes that Sandoval says are meant to be more illustrative of Jan’s work, rather than a definitive statement. “On careful inspection, Jan’s mono mixes can’t be beat, but the new stereo versions afford the listener a bigger window into his production prowess,” Sandoval says. “Listen out for such anomalies as the longer coda on ‘Mulholland,’ or the vocal verse that later became a guitar solo on ‘Girl, You’re Blowing My Mind.’” More than four decades after Berry found solace in these sounds, they arrive for everyone to share as the Carnival finally comes to town.

Deluxe edition combines the aforementioned CD with a vinyl version of the album in mono presented in a gorgeous hardbound gate fold jacket.
  • 1st official release of the long lost and often bootlegged 1960s album
  • CD features 29 songs including mono and stereo mixes of the album along with 15 bonus tracks from the 1966-68 sessions
  • 16 page full color booklet featuring rare photos and extensive liner notes from producer Andrew Sandoval

WORKING CLASS DEVILS - Vol 2

Just when you think you know all about the late 60's/early70's scenes on the planet, along comes the second volume of the mind-broadening Working-Class Devils series to deliver unbelievable cuts and bands. The faves from volume 1 are all there including Krzysztof Klenczon & Trzy Korony's another prime freakbeat/psych fuzz rocker, Zdr—j Jana's trademark proto no-wave skronky-guitar weirdness or Niebiesko-Czarni horsing around again with a distortion pedal. The newcomers Wi lanie and Lancety take no prisoners with their crude US-style garage punk while Piotr Pastor & S o ce and Wi lanie 69 reveal more folk/hippie leanings thrown in for good measure; there's even a Nederbeat gem thatÉ turns out to be Polish and many, many more. These sides no doubt make for the ultimate in what could be tolerated in an Eastern Bloc country during the Cold War. Most of the tracks are excruciatingly obscure recorded during the cold war and then were shelved before excavated here in their juvenile glory. Non of these is re-issued on vinyl to date, which would spare you years of crate-digging. Couple all that with great band pictures and well-researched and exciting English-written liner notes and you have one hell of a disc including songs that could stand proud alongside anything released in the Free World at the time

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 3, 2014

DEAR JERRY: Recently I asked about the highest ranking tune on Cash Box that never appeared on Billboard.

You replied that "The Letter," by Wayne Newton, lasted 31 weeks on the Cash Box Top 100, and, in December 1992, even reached No. 1. Amazingly, Wayne's song did not chart at all on Billboard.

Now I'm knocking on your door again, with the flip side of the issue.

What is the highest ranking tune on Billboard, that never appeared on Cash Box?
—C.J. Burrows, Rochester, Wash.

DEAR C.J.: Yeah, I recognized your distinctive knock. C'mon in.

There are several different answers to this question, each with disclaimers and fine print.

The immediate answer is Craig Mack's "Flava in Ya Ear" (Bad Boy 79001). It peaked at No. 9 on Billboard's Hot 100 in November 1994, went platinum, and somehow never appeared on the Cash Box survey.

In late '94, however, the Cash Box operation was in decline, and just 24 months later (Nov. 16, 1996) they published their final issue.

As the end drew near, it is certainly possible less research was put into developing their charts, thus making comparisons to the newly revamped Billboard Hot 100 suspect.

How they overlooked "Flava in Ya Ear" is unknown, yet they and Billboard both chart his follow-up, "Get Down," coincidentally with a remix of "Flava in Ya Ear" on the flip side (Bad Boy 79012).

Perhaps we should reboot our research.

Since the first full year of Billboard Top 100 charts was 1956, it makes more sense to begin then, and continue through 1989.

Even with new parameters, there are nagging issues — significant differences between the two magazines that might, for our purpose, disqualify some highly-charted singles.

1. The biggest variance is the Cash Box policy, before September 1965, of combining numerous versions of the same song at one chart position. The focus then was strictly based on the popularity of songs, not the artists.

Sharing that philosophy was the long-running TV show, "Your Hit Parade." They counted down the nation's Top 10 songs, indifferent to whose versions were the best sellers.

2. Then there was Billboard's separate Disc Jockey chart, published up until the week before they introduced the Hot 100 (August 1958). The Jockey chart sometimes included versions of songs by artists other than those with the biggest hit versions on the Best Sellers and Top 100 charts.

3. Billboard discontinued including Christmas records on the Hot 100 after 1962.

4. Cash Box sometimes included EPs on their singles charts, while Billboard usually listed individual tracks from those EPs.

With all that in mind, here are the candidates for highest peaking records exclusive to each magazine's singles charts (1956 through 1989).

CASH BOX:

Remember, "The Letter" (1992) is now out of the picture.

"Snoopy's Christmas," by The Royal Guardsmen (Laurie 3416), peaked at No. 10 on Cash Box in December 1967. It could, however, be disqualified because Christmas records were disallowed on Billboard's Hot 100.

Elvis Presley's "King Creole" EP (RCA Victor EPA-4319) peaked at No. 20 on the Cash Box Top 100 in September 1958. None of the four individual tracks on the EP ("King Creole"; "New Orleans"; "As Long As I Have You"; "Lover Doll") charted on the Hot 100, but at that time Billboard did not include EPs on that chart, so this one might not qualify.

If those two are eliminated, then the answer is "Kid Stuff," by the McGuire Sisters (Coral 61771). It peaked at No. 36 on the February 23, 1957 Cash Box Best Sellers chart, yet never appeared on any Billboard charts.

BILLBOARD:

Determining which records qualify gets even more complicated.

If the pre-Hot 100 Disc Jockey charts are included, then it's "Silhouettes," by the Diamonds (Mercury 71197). This peaked at No. 10 on the DJ chart in November 1957 even though their version reached only No, 60 on Billboard's Top 100 chart.

"Silhouettes" was also affected by Cash Box's policy of listing more than one version of a song. The Rays recording was the only one designated a "best-selling version" on Cash Box. Whether the Diamonds' version would have charted had sales for each version been compiled separately is unknown.

The same mystery applies to two others in the 1950s:

"A Theme from the Threepenny Opera (Mack The Knife)," by Louis Armstrong (Columbia 40587), peaked at No. 20 on Billboard's Top 100 in March 1956, and Lawrence Welk's "Last Date" (Dot 16145) reached No. 21 on the Hot 100 in December 1960.

If the above three are eliminated, the next contender is "Topsy I," by Cozy Cole (flip side of "Topsy II," the smash hit ).

Since Billboard and Cash Box listed both titles of double-sided hits separately at the time, the absence of "Topsy I" on the Cash Box Top 100, and its peak position of No. 27 on Billboard, makes it the highest ranking Billboard-only song, without competing versions.

Cash Box specifically showed "Topsy II" on their charts, so there was never a thought of combining the two parts into the same listing.

A gigantic "thank you" is extended to Cash Box archivist, Randy Price, for sharing his valuable research with us this week. Without Randy's input, I probably wouldn't have attempted a reply to this question.

IZ ZAT SO? In the early 1950s, it would not be unusual to find 60 to 80 different recordings shown for just the Cash Box Top 10 titles, each listed in alphabetical order by label name (good for Capitol, not so much for Victor).

In the early '60s, when there were fewer cover versions anyway, the number of Top 10 entries dropped to 10 to 20.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

from our friends at SoundStageDirect

The Beatles 1962-1966 (Pre-Order) (On Sale) by The Beatles

Assembling a compilation of the Beatles is a difficult task, not only because they had an enormous number of hits, but also because singles didn't tell the full story; many of their album tracks were as important as the singles, if not more so. The double-album 1962-1966, commonly called The Red Album, does the job surprisingly well, hitting most of the group's major early hits and adding important album tracks like "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," "Drive My Car," "Norwegian Wood," and "In My Life." Naturally, there are many great songs missing from the 26-track 1962-1966, and perhaps it would have made more sense to include the Revolver cuts on its companion volume, 1967-1970, yet The Red Album captures the essence of the Beatles' pre-Sgt. Pepper records."

Don't Worry About Me by Joey Ramone

In the wake of the sad passing of Joey Ramone, Don't Worry About Me is the first posthumous release to come from his estate. Consisting of pop-punk anthems along the lines of '60s garage rock and very early punk, Don't Worry About Me is a sad reminder of how good Ramone really was. With a brilliant ear for melody, a songwriting skill based in simplicity, and the most unpretentious lyrics this side of Chubby Checker, Ramone didn't care about making groundbreaking music when he had mastered the art of pop-punk to a degree most of his disciples will never understand. "What a Wonderful World" and "1969" are excellent covers that do their source material justice, although Louis Armstrong probably never expected his torch song to be rocked out à la Sid Vicious' "My Way." But the two best tracks are "Searching for Something," his Beatlesque tribute to a girl, and "Mr. Punchy," a gorgeous pop song that features a guest appearance from the Damned's Captain Sensible. The anti-cancer anthem "I Got Knocked Down (But I'll Get Up)" is a heartbreaking stance on his condition that is pure punk rock all the way ("I want my life/I want my life/It really sucks/It really sucks") that only goes to show how even toward the end, he refused to give into sentimentality. Mute is excited to announce the release of José González’s new record, Vestiges & Claws. The album, his first in seven years, is out on February 17, 2015 and was produced by González in his home as well as Svenska Grammofonstudion, both in Gothenburg, Sweden. It contains years’ worth of musical sketches that in other hands might naturally sprawl wildly in sound and style, but on Vestiges & Claws González has created a collection of songs that cohere just about perfectly, ensuring his position as one of the most important artists of his generation.

Andrew Liles 'Wanton wives, Monstrous Maindens & Wicked Witches' Available On Vinyl From DeathWaltz

Andrew Liles’ ‘Wanton Wives…’ follows on from where his ‘Maleficent Monster’ left off in June and also follows on from his recent Equestrian Vortex soundtrack 10″ on Death Waltz. This, the second LP of horror inspired nastiness in his series for Blackest Rainbow, features creeping giallo jazz with sultry spoken vocals, synth heavy monsters, cannibal lunacy, and a track called ‘Wild Boar’, wait until you hear that one. This is the sound of someone who has spent too many late nights watching any horror films they can get their hands on.

Legendary UK artist Graham Humphreys returns to create new art, this time featuring Liles bursting from his poor wives chest whilst she grasps a skull and a decapitated head of a voodoo priestess version of herself. She endures a lot…

Blue Ruin 'Brooke Blair & Will Blair' Vinyl Pre-Order From DeathWaltz

Jeremy Saulnier’s Blue Ruin premiered at 2013 Cannes Film Festival to great critical acclaim and won the FIPRESCI Prize. It gained distribution and opened in the US to April 2014 to a great response from critics and audiences.

This revenge thriller focuses largely on the consequences of revenge, and the main act of revenge you expect will be the focus of the film happens early on and it spirals progressively into even darker and grim territory, dramatically enhanced by the score by brothers, Brooke and Will Blair. The relationship between composers and director has been long standing, having all known each other since they were kids, with Jeremy and the film’s Macon Blair, who plays lead protagonist Dwight, working on films for quite sometime. Macon, also happens to be the elder sibling to Brooke and Will. Brooke and Will composed music to most Jeremy’s previous work, and Macon also starred in some of this output.

Being so familiar with one another personally, Jeremy’s horror and 80s inspired early work, and his love of Carpenter’s music, the brothers settled a synth based score, which feels remarkably organic, and at times even almost classical. Minimal tones gliding through one another, with the tense and melancholic themes of the film, percussion seemed like it would detract from the tone of the film. However at times there is a slight percussion sound, which was created from a sample of Macon’s heartbeat, that was unexpectedly captured on set by his lavalier mic on set. Editor Julia Bloch sent them a short file, which was manipulated into a “drum”. It seemed appropriate to incorporate Dwights’ actual life force, his heartbeat into the score. The intensity of this picture is driven home through the power of this score.

Includes a download which features a selection of additional cues not included on the LP. LTD edition of only 250 with a rust splatter effect. Released on Blackest Rainbow records. Release December 28th 2014

Pre-Order Drive-By Truckers 'English Oceans'

On February 12th, 2014, we planned an intimate private 'dress rehearsal' show to premiere the songs from our brand new album "English Oceans" in front of a small live audience of friends. The plan was to film and record the performance for use in promoting the album. It turned out to be the day of an ice storm that essentially shut down the Southeast for a couple of days and the roads were unpassable from the combination of black ice and the South's lack of snow plows and ice related services. We played the album in its entirety and had a pretty swell time. This DVD contains the performance and is a pretty nifty document of that moment in time for our band.   We hope that you enjoy it. - Patterson Hood

The Decemberists 'What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World' Vinyl Pre-Order

What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World, is the Decemberists 7th album. It’s the band’s most varied and dynamic work, both musically and emotionally.

Since their last album, The King is Dead, which went to No.1 in the US, the band have contributed a song to the Hunger Games soundtrack and appeared in The Simpsons. Colin Meloy, the band’s frontman, has also been working on the Wildwood series – a narrative saga about two seventh-graders drawn into a hidden, magical forest, illustrated by his wife, Carson Ellis.

Many songs on the new record represent the more personal side of Colin Meloy’s songwriting, a change from the strong narrative thrust that characterized much of the Decemberists’ work. “Writing books as this raw, fantastic narrator has been the outlet for that part of my brain,” he says. “Having a family, having kids, having this career, getting older—all of these things have made me look more inward. So some of these songs are among the more intimately personal songs I’ve ever written.”

Perhaps most notable is “12-17-12,” a song named for, and inspired by, the date that President Obama addressed the nation following the Newtown school shootings, and read the names of the victims. “I watched that speech and was hit by a sense of helplessness, but also the message of ‘Hold your family close.’” This bewildering, conflicted feeling came out in a phrase near the end of the song—“what a terrible world, what a beautiful world”—that gave the album its title.   Release Date: 19th January 2015 Formats: 2 x LP, CD, MP3 and Super Deluxe Box Set (details below)

Then It All Came Down by Wrekmeister Harmonies

Then It All Came Down features J.R. Robinson joined by members of Indian, Corrections House, Twilight, Yakuza, Anatomy of Habit, Come, Mind Over Mirrors, Bloodiest, as well as Wrest (Leviathan) and Ryley Walker.

First 666 copies pressed on limited green vinyl. LP packaged with artworked inner sleeve and free download card.

J.R. Robinson perceives life as a long, gradual process of decay. Lightness fades into darkness, while innocence succumbs to the evils of modern society. His music reflects not only this worldview but his emotional response to it. Then It All Came Down, his second long-form composition as Wrekmeister Harmonies, is an exploration of that existential deterioration and an attempt at attaining a deeper understanding of its process. Wrekmeister Harmonies’ pastoral doom has earned praise from Pitchfork, SPIN, Decibel, and Invisible Oranges as a new form of metal composition and performance involving a wide variety of instrumentation. Employing an enormous ensemble of some of Chicago’s best talents in the metal and experimental communities, including Sanford Parker (Corrections House, Twilight), Bruce Lamont (Yakuza), Ryley Walker, Chanel Pease (Pulse Programming), Chris Brokaw (Codeine, Come), members of Indian and Leviathan and more, Robinson has created a work that is equally gorgeous and menacing. Few artists have perfected the nuances of beauty as well as annihilation, and Robinson’s mastery of both sides of the spectrum makes his a unique voice in the field of doom.

Then It All Came Down opens with a low, soft drone, creeping in almost imperceptibly. Bells chime as more tonal voices emerge from the ether, Walker’s acoustic guitar echoing in the abyssal soundscape.

LAMB - WHAT SOUND

What Sound is Manchester electronic music duo Lamb’s third release from 2001. The producer/vocal duo of Andy Barlow and Lou Rhodes is joined by session musicians Arto Lindsay on guitar, Me’Shell NdegéOcello on bass, and Michael Franti with additional vocal work. Doves guitarist Jimi Goodwin, producers Nellee Hooper and Richard Dorfmeister (of Kruder & Dorfmeister fame) also contributed to the album. The track “Heaven” was used repeatedly by the television series Six Feet Under.

Still one of the most inventive groups in electronica, Lamb continued pushing the boundaries of singer/songwriter Drum’n’Bass three albums in. Andy Barlow’s productions again set a gold standard for ambitious, evocative, intelligent accompaniment of Louise Rhodes’ vocals. If there were any doubters about Lamb being the brightest, most talented singer/ producer combo in electronica, What Sound is all the argument needed to the contrary.

The Music On Vinyl 2 LP reissue of What Sound includes the winning track of a worldwide remix contest for the song “Heaven”, by Czech producer Ower.

Double LP with Insert on blue transparent vinyl. Limited edition with only 1500 copies.

NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS - ABATTOIR BLUES / THE LYRE OF ORPHEUS

Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus is the thirteenth studio album by the Australian alternative rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, released on 20 September 2004 on Mute Records. It is a double album with a total of seventeen songs—nine on Abattoir Blues and eight on The Lyre of Orpheus.

The album was produced by Nick Launay at Studio Ferber in Paris in March–April 2004 and Nick Cave used The Bad Seeds line up of Mick Harvey, Thomas Wydler, Martyn Casey, Conway Savage, Jim Sclavunos, Warren Ellis, and James Johnston. It was the first album by the group for which Blixa Bargeld did not perform – English guitarist and organist Johnston, of the group Gallon Drunk, replaced Bargeld. Cave decided to split drumming duties for the two parts, with Sclavunos on Abattoir Blues and Wydler on The Lyre of Orpheus. According to Launay, the whole album was completed in twelve days.

The album's release was supported by the Abattoir Blues Tour, which travelled through Europe from 2 November to 5 December. In January 2007 a double live album and DVD was issued as The Abattoir Blues Tour. Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus 's last track, "O Children", was featured in the 2010 film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, and the song is referenced as an achievement in Lego Harry Potter: Years 5–7. In March 2005, to complement the success of the double album, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds released B-Sides & Rarities, a three-disc, 56-track collection of B-sides, rarities, and tracks that had appeared on film soundtracks.

The title is a reference to a line from the AC/DC song "You Shook Me All Night Long". The songs and artwork are the same on both versions, but the DGC artwork is on glossy paper.

Portastatic The Summer of the Shark Vinyl Reissue

Tomorrow, Portastatic’s The Summer of the Shark will be available for the first time on vinyl as part of a monthly series of reissues to mark the 25th anniversary of Merge Records.

Mac McCaughan, co-founder of Merge Records and frontman of the band Superchunk, began recording solo albums under the name Portastatic in the early ’90’s. Beginning with this album, Portastatic evolved from a lo-fi side project to become McCaughan’s main focus throughout Superchunk’s long hiatus in the early ’00s.

McCaughan wrote the songs on The Summer of the Shark in 2001 while Superchunk was on tour in support of Here’s to Shutting Up, which was released mere days after the September 11 attacks and would be the band’s last studio album for nine years. The resulting batch of songs was the last Portastatic album recorded almost entirely at home; it was also the most emotionally resonant and musically compact collection to date.

Upon the album’s release, then Chicago Tribune reporter John Cook wrote of the album: “It is the most effective and moving musical answer yet to what has happened to us over the last two years. Faced with an enormous catastrophe, McCaughan elected to make a small record. There are no heroes rushing up stairwells and no dissections of good and evil—only scared, confused people and local heartbreaks.”

Recorded at McCaughan’s home studio in Chapel Hill, The Summer of the Shark includes contributions from Janet Weiss (Wild Flag, Quasi, Sleater-Kinney), Tony Crow (Lambchop), Margaret White (Versus, Matt Pond PA), Matthew McCaughan (Bon Iver, Hiss Golden Messenger), Aaron Oliva, and John Plymale.

LP is pressed on white vinyl, and includes a coupon for a full download.

MAJOR LEAGUE - THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH ME

Following an incredibly busy year of shows in support of their debut record Hard Feelings, Major League has returned with a sophomore album that defies any pre-conceived notions and defines their next evolution as a band. With guitarist Brian Joyce now helming vocal duties, backed by Matt Chila (guitar/vocals), Kyle Bell (bass) and Luke Smartnick (drums), the band emerges with a new sense of identity, a renewed focus and an abundant amount of energy for their most personal recording to date.

For their latest effort, Major League worked with esteemed producer Will Yip (Title Fight, The Wonder Years, Balance and Composure) at Studio 4 in Conshohocken, PA who helped steer them in a new direction and further explore their internal boundaries as a band.

“There's Nothing Wrong With Me as a whole dives into the deepest depths of my person and lays it all out,” explains Joyce. “While recording with Will there were many times where I was self conscious about certain subject matter on the record, things I wasn't sure I was ready to talk about. It was very emotional experience and at times nerve wracking to talk about. But ultimately it's what made the record who it is and gave it the identity we feel we've lacked in the past.”

Blood, sweat and tears in the studio paid off as the band came away with eleven brilliantly written tracks that run a gamut of emotions with thoughtful versus and intoxicating choruses. Song’s like “Pillow Talk,” are brought to life with massive riffs and driving rhythm that reveal a vulnerability and sincerity not heard since Jimmy Eat World got Clarity.
