John Lennon: He Asked to Give Peace a Chance

Speaking about his future music on the day of his death: “I've always considered my work one piece and I consider that my work won't be finished until I am dead and buried and I hope that's a long, long time.” (RKO Radio, 1980)

He dreamed of world peace. He was an artist, poet and an outspoken voice of the hippie generation. He was an influential musician, a peace activist, an absent father and a devoted lover and husband. He abused alcohol  and drugs, sneered at normality, yet took time off from his rock and roll career to raise his son. But most of all, he was a Beatle. He was and still is - John Winston Lennon.

Born in Liverpool on October 9, 1940, John Lennon was shot to death on December 8, 1980 by a fanatical fan. The world mourned his death as millions grieved for the man who was the heart and soul of the world's best rock and roll band, the Beatles.

He had an unusual childhood, shuttled back and forth between his mother Julia and her sister Mimi. John eventually spent his formative years with his aunt Mimi and Uncle George and as Mimi recalls, "His mind was going the whole time, and it was either drawing, or writing poetry, or reading."

Yet, he was an unruly, stubborn and a disobedient, troubled youth. He failed at art school, yet swore to his aunt that "one of these days I'm going to be famous and you'll be sorry."

John had a premonition of things to come, as he knew he was a bit different than most people. As he looked back, he explained: "I always knew I was going to make it, but I wasn't sure in what manifestation. I knew it was just a matter of time."

There are many words to describe John Lennon. He called himself a leader, yet did some of his best work alone. He was an alleged wife beater, very outspoken, often putting out controversial quotes to the media; either to make a point or just to be outlandish. But when he spoke, people listened.

He was a partner with his boyhood friend, Paul McCartney and together they left a musical writing partnership and a legacy that are unequaled to this day and may never be. The Beatles, with their producer George Martin, changed music in dramatic fashion, with studio techniques that had never been attempted.

They pioneered the concept album with "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," which the editors of Rolling Stone magazine list as the greatest rock album of the rock era.

He had the attention of our government with his antiwar protests and at one point was under FBI investigation. He sang of love and peace and living in harmony, with all people coming together as one. There are some who called him a genius.  He could be nasty and meanspirited, yet at times was overly compassionate and loving.  He fought his demons and it seems he was winning, until December 8, 1980.

We can only recall his career, from the beginning, until the end and who doesn't know the story about the four lads from Liverpool. He was part of the group that changed rock and roll music history.

We can only wonder what John Lennon would be doing if he were alive today. How active would he be in promoting world peace? Would the Beatles have ever gotten back together?  Would he still be creating wonderfully crafted rock and roll songs?  All we can do is Imagine, and that is the shame of it all.

Newsom Has A Lot To Say On This 3 LP Fairy Tale

by Michael Fremer

Music

Sound

The precedent for this sprawling, personal three record set might be Joni Mitchell’s Blue but don’t expect to be humming the tunes as you head for the exits.

Newsom may turn you on, but she’s not a radio. This album of exquisitely orchestrated and expertly performed “Appalachian chamber rock” (my concocted term) consists of time-signature shifting, melodically twisty late afternoon vignettes that combine Newsom’s child-like voice and curiosity with very adult themes. The mood is consistent with the melancholy found in Appalachian music, though it incorporates more whimsy.

Playing piano and harp and backed by small string ensembles augmented with brass and woodwind, Newsom weaves a rich tapestry of complex melodic invention and a rich narrative that will take numerous plays to decipher and process—though don't be surprised if you never manage it.

Fortunately, the sumptuously produced box set includes a full sized booklet containing the lyrics—not that they will be all that helpful in figuring out their meaning.

The sprawling title track may sound like a rousing drinking song but it’s not quite that, though eventually it gets to the drink but not before it takes you on a long circuitous path filled with unknown characters referred to on a first name basis, some of whom are royalty.

The fairy tale-like song references spiders, guards, a spent relationship with someone she calls “daddy longlegs”and don’t ask me what most of it or any of it means but the strongly rendered images are both abstract and immediate.

“Miss Montez, the Countess of Lansfield, appealed to the King of Bavaria, saying, ‘Pretty papa, if you are my friend—mister daddy longlegs, they are at it again!—Can I see you?’Poor Lola! A tarantula’s mountingCountess Lansfeld’s Handsome brassiere, while they all cheer”

Got that?

Most of the images are of a bucolic nature and the songs set in a countryside long gone. Even when snippets begin to make sense and a story appears, they quickly dissolve into ambiguity.

The sad “Baby Birch” moves slowly and appears to be about child abandonment but it changes tempo, takes on a stronger rhythmic thrust and ends with the singer skinning a rabbit and saying to it “ ‘wherever you go, little runaway bunny, I will find you.’ And then she ran, as they’re liable to do.”

Say, what?

Some of the songs are more easily understood but the denseness of the lyrics combined with the melodic diffuseness makes for ambiguous, mysterious, and at first somewhat difficult listening.

The three record spread makes absorbing the set easier in that you can play a side and retire to something more familiar and then come back for another side or two.

Don’t get the wrong impression: the listening pleasure is inversely proportional to the comprehension difficulties, for this is a gorgeous sounding production. You’ll hardly believe your ears when you hear the exquisitely rendered instruments and the clarity and solidity of the images.

It will take but a few seconds for you to note the luxurious quality of the production; the transparency, textural purity and harmonic perfection of the instruments and the pristine vocal recording. The LP set was mastered by Steve Rooke at Abbey Road, probably DMM but I'm not sure where it was pressed. The pressing quality is excellent overall, but the handling was less than perfect and two of the three records were scuffed, though only one small one "played."

So while you may have difficulty with the lyrics and it will take some time for the melodic lines to develop, the gorgeous sound will immediately sweep you away as your mind works to process and untangle the dense layers of Ms. Newsom’s multi-layered, transformative music.

Save for Sufjan Stevens, I’m not sure any other young musician today combines the musical, compositional, lyrical abilities and the sonic sensitivities twenty eight year old Joanna Newsom has consistently shown on her three studio albums.

Her last one, Ys (see review on this site) was engineered by Steve Albini, mixed by Jim O’Rourke and arranged by Van Dyke Parks, so don’t think the production here is a fluke. She knows what she wants.

Newsom has been dating SNL regular Andy Samberg, so clearly she’s got a good sense of humor and probably enjoys “Dick in a box,” which if you haven’t seen you should! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhwbxEfy7fg

Topping all of this off, she has incredible legs, which she shows more than a few times in this thankfully dick-less box.

Have One on Me gets the highest recommendation for music and sound.

Dido Sued by Astronaut for Using Space Flight Picture

Former NASA astronaut Bruce McCandless is suing pop singer Dido for what he said is an unauthorized use of a photo of his 1984 space flight for an album cover. In a suit filed Sept. 30 in federal court in Los Angeles, his claim is that he never gave permission for Dido to use the photograph that shows him “free flying” about 320 feet away from the space shuttle Challenger. The photograph was used on the cover of Dido’s 2008 album “Safe Trip Home.” The suit doesn’t allege copyright infringement, only infringement of his persona.

The lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages, also names Sony Corp.’s Sony Music Entertainment and Getty Images Inc. as defendants. McCandless said in the complaint that Sony was informed as early as June of last year that the use of his image was unauthorized.

The 1984 photograph was taken when McCandless tested the so-called manned maneuvering unit, a nitrogen jet propelled backpack, according to the complaint. The photograph taken by the shuttle’s co-pilot shows McCandless floating in the distance against a backdrop of black outer space and the earth’s blue atmosphere.

Liz Young, a spokeswoman for Sony Music Entertainment, declined to comment on the lawsuit, as did Jodi Einhorn, a spokeswoman for Getty Images, who also had no comment.

Vinyl review : Felt – Crumbling the Antiseptic Beauty

October 5th, 2010 Artist – Felt
Title – Crumbling the Antiseptic Beauty

Format – Vinyl LP

Label – Cherry Red

Year- 1981

Felt was an early indie band from England that mostly made jangly stuff centered around guitar melodies. The lead singer and songwriter goes only by “Lawrence” and sings kind of like Bryan Ferry on valium.

…i’m not sure what else to say, really. Having listened through some of their 10 year discography, it’s all kind of samey : shimmering, atmospheric instrumentals paired with plaintive lyrics. They get a little poppyer and uptempo as they progress through the 80s, but this debut record is on the darker side..

The album opens with Evergreen Dazed, a 5 minute instrumental piece whose pained guitar lines evoke shuffling through chilly fall afternoons under steel gray skies. Unfortunately, the guitar on this track is kinda shrill, I mean I guess its meant to be high pitched and twangy but it’s still not as smooth as I expected from vinyl.

Our next song is Fortune, and the version on this album is  different than the one i’ve heard  before, it’s slower and has tribal-ish drums instead of porn music rim knocks. Wiki tells me it was re-recorded and re-released in 84 as a b-side, which is probably what I heard before. I prefer the single version.

Guitar harshness is reduced on the rest of the tracks, but still seems too jumpy and fake. On the tracks that have percussion, the drums are primitive style tomtoms and hand drums that have appropriate bass and a sense of being struck by a person. Lawrence’s vocals can get rather hissy and sibilant, especially on I Worship The Sun. In sum, the album’s sound isn’t terrible but it left me disappointed, especially since I had only heard the MP3s from the CD version before so I was expecting to be blown away by a rich sonic landscape. I guess if I had a tube amp it would mellow out the edges a bit.

Being that this is a fairly rare record, I can’t find it on Amazon for you guys. I got my copy from a guy on Discogs for about 55 dollars, which is fairly steep but at least it was in near mint condition.

Dave Brubeck: Legacy Of A Legend

21 SONGS HANDPICKED BY BRUBECK, SPANNING HIS COLUMBIA RECORDS TENURE (1954-1970); INCLUDES PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED LIVE TAKE OF "THREE TO GET READY" RECORDED AT CLASSIC QUARTET'S FINAL CONCERT, DECEMBER 26, 1967

Kick-off of year-long Brubeck 90th birthday campaign at Legacy Recordings

Available at both physical and digital retail outlets starting November 16, 2010, through Columbia/Legacy

On December 6th, TCM to premiere new documentary, Dave Brubeck: In His Own Sweet Way, executive-produced by Clint Eastwood

NEW YORK, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- With every passing decade, the national treasure known as Dave Brubeck continues to amaze his millions of fans across the globe. His energy seems to transcend all bounds, as his quartet performed more than 50 concerts in 2010, and new compositions continue to pour from his fertile imagination. On Monday, December 6, 2010, the world will celebrate his 90th birthday, an event to be commemorated by Turner Classic Movies (TCM) with the premiere of Dave Brubeck: In His Own Sweet Way, a new documentary executive-produced by Clint Eastwood.

In advance of the film's premiere, Legacy Recordings will release Dave Brubeck: Legacy of a Legend, a new 21-track double-CD compilation with every track handpicked by Brubeck himself. The commemorative collection, featuring extensive annotation and anecdotal liner notes written by his son Darius, will be available at all physical and digital retail outlets starting November 16th through Columbia/Legacy, a division of SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.

This significant package finds Brubeck reflecting on his 17 core years at Columbia Records. He opens in 1954 with "Jeepers Creepers" from his second Columbia LP (and first studio album for the label) Brubeck Time; and closes with a pair of tracks from 1970 with Gerry Mulligan, "Out Of Nowhere" and "St. Louis Blues" from the Live At The Berlin Philharmonie LP.

On CD Two, Brubeck dips into his deep personal archive of recordings for a previously unreleased live version of "Three To Get Ready" from the final concert of the classic quartet: Brubeck on piano, alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, bassist Eugene Wright, and Joe Morello on drums. "Three To Get Ready" was a centerpiece of the breakthrough album of 1959, Time Out, one of the quartet's first LPs together, so it is an appropriate choice for Legacy of a Legend to include this version from their final concert together.

Over the course of CD One, Legacy of a Legend shows the evolution of the quartet. Brubeck, Desmond, and drummer Joe Dodge were together since 1953, with a succession of bassists through the mid-'50s. In late 1953, on a weekend 'field trip' to Helen Noga's Blackhawk nightclub in San Francisco, Columbia Records staff producer George Avakian heard the quartet and signed them (along with a young singer named Johnny Mathis, managed by Noga). The quartet already had made several successful live college concert recordings on Fantasy (in 1953), so Avakian extended the concept to their Columbia debut of 1954.

Brubeck was skeptical when Avakian decided to record the quartet in a proper studio later that year, Columbia's imposing 30th Street facility. The results, however, as heard on Brubeck Time (with Brubeck, Desmond, Dodge, and bassist Bob Bates), became a program comprised almost entirely of standards (including Johnny Mercer's "Jeepers Creepers"), proving that the quartet had little to fear from the absence of a concert audience. Within weeks of the sessions, Brubeck was featured on the November 8, 1954, cover of TIME magazine, a phenomenal coup, only the second jazz artist to appear on the magazine's cover.

Avakian returned the quartet to a live setting in 1955, New York's Basin Street East night club, for Red, Hot & Cool ("Taking A Chance On Love" from the Broadway musical, Cabin In The Sky). At that point, after several LPs mainly consisting of standards with the quartet, the time was right in 1956 for Brubeck's first solo piano album of original compositions, Brubeck Plays Brubeck ("The Duke").

Morello was introduced to the lineup on Jazz Impressions Of The U.S.A. ("Ode To A Cowboy"), a program of Brubeck originals inspired by his travels across the country with the quartet. (Bates' brother Norman had taken over on bass.) Brubeck was similarly inspired by a trip to Disneyland with his family in 1957. The result was a concept album, his final LP with Avakian, comprised entirely of tunes from four of Walt's animated features, Dave Digs Disney ("Someday My Prince Will Come," from Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs).

The quartet headed overseas in 1958, for a grueling tour of 80 concerts in 14 countries, and a State Department-sponsored trip that took them to Poland, India, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, and Iraq. Brubeck captured the spirit on his original compositions for Jazz Impressions Of Eurasia ("Thank You"). The 20th anniversary of Gone With The Wind in 1959 inspired an LP of southern-rooted songs, including Stephen Foster's "Camptown Races" and the timeless MGM movie theme.

With new bassist Eugene Wright now fixed in the quartet lineup, and new producer Teo Macero, the stage was set for the 1959 recording of Time Out. An incalculable watershed moment in jazz history, with every cut in a different time signature, it brought modern progressive jazz into the mainstream. Time Out hit #2 in Billboard and became the first jazz album to sell a million copies, while the single "Take Five" b/w "Blue Rondo A La Turk" changed all the rules, played on jukeboxes around the world.

As if in counterpoint to Time Out, Brubeck accepted an offer from Jimmy Rushing to do an album with the 57 year-old singer, 'Mr. Five By Five,' the former front man for the Count Basie Orchestra in the 1930s and '40s, who was still at the top of his game ("Evenin'"). Working with a singer proved so delightful that Brubeck organized a musical revue in 1961 called The Real Ambassadors, which rallied against racism (on songs written by Dave and his wife Iola) sung by Carmen McRae ("My One Bad Habit"), Louis Armstrong ("Summer Song") and others.

The ongoing success of 1959's Time Out – 164 weeks on the Billboard chart – called for a 'sequel' in 1961. Time Further Out hit the Top 10 on its way to a 46-week chart run, and earned jukebox singles play with "Unsquare Dance." Another sequel to the Jazz Impressions series was inspired by the Big Apple, Jazz Impressions Of New York ("Something To Sing About").

Brubeck disbanded the quartet in 1967, to concentrate on composing. In 1998, Legacy compiled Buried Treasures, a CD of previously unreleased material from 1967, recorded live in Mexico City. "Mr. Broadway" and "Three To Get Ready" are swan songs to one of the most important aggregations in jazz history. Within a year, of course, Brubeck was back with the first of many new groups, this one featuring old friend, baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan, plus bassist Jack Six and drummer Alan Dawson, a lineup that stayed together until 1973. One of their finest sessions was recorded in 1970, Live At The Berlin Philharmonie ("Out Of Nowhere," "St. Louis Blues"), which brings this collection to its conclusion.

Throughout his long career, Brubeck has received numerous national and international honors, including the Living Legacy Jazz Award from the Kennedy Center (2007), the National Medal of the Arts from President Clinton, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the Smithsonian Medal, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He holds numerous honorary doctorates from American, Canadian, English, Swiss, and German universities. He is a Duke Ellington Fellow at Yale University, and in the year 2000, the National Endowment for the Arts declared him a Jazz Master. On December 6, 2009, Brubeck was awarded Kennedy Center honors.

Turner Classic Movies will dedicate an afternoon to the legendary artist with the December 6 premiere of Dave Brubeck: In His Own Sweet Way. The film, which will premiere at 5 p.m. (EST), takes its name from "In Your Own Sweet Way," one of Brubeck's most famous tunes. The song has been recorded by countless musicians, including Miles Davis. The documentary is produced and directed by award-winning jazz filmmaker and longtime Eastwood collaborator Bruce Ricker, whose credits include Tony Bennett: The Music Never Ends, Thelonious Monk: Straight No Chaser, The Last of the Blue Devils, and many other titles.

TCM's premiere of Dave Brubeck: In His Own Sweet Way will be accompanied by two classic films featuring Brubeck himself. At 1 p.m. (EST), Brubeck is among a number of legends performing in All Night Long (1962), a jazz update of Shakespeare's Othello starring Patrick MacGoohan, Marti Stevens and Betsy Blair. Then at 3:15 p.m. TCM will present Southern Crossing (1981), a fascinating chronicle of the five-day jazz festival held in Sydney, Australia.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 4, 2010

DEAR JERRY: Since I rate “Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On,” by Jerry Lee Lewis, as one of the greatest Rock hits ever, I started digging into its history.

Until Jerry Lee's version, I never heard the song by anyone, and assumed it was brand new. I even figured he wrote it, as he did many of his recordings.

I was wrong on all counts.

Apparently it came out originally by a fellow named Roy Hall. I heard a brief sample of his record and it doesn't sound much like the song we know by Lewis, but does have the same title.

Are there any other recordings of this classic that precede Jerry Lee's?
—Lucy Hollins, Louisville, Ky.

DEAR LUCY: I know of four, one of which is the Roy Hall rendition, though his is not the first issue.

Each of the four came out in consecutive months during the final third of 1955. All are the same basic song, and titled “Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On.”

The Jerry Lee Lewis release (Sun 267) shows the title as “Whole Lot Of Shakin' Going On.” That change is only slight, but Jerry Lee's arrangement and lyrics are drastically different than the earlier records.

Chronologically, they are:

1. September: Big Maybelle (Okeh 7060). Actually recorded March 21, 1955, this is the first waxing of “Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On.” It is pure blues and should have been an R&B hit. Arranged by a newcomer, 23-year-old Quincy Jones.

2. October: Roy Hall (Decca 29697). Hall's version is a country bopper.

3. November: Dolores Fredericks (Decca 29716). Dolores is similar to Georgia “Dance with Me Henry” Gibbs, but the accompaniment by Jack Pleis and His Orchestra, gives this an unexpected big band flavor.

4. December: Commodores (Dot 15439). Think of this as the Mills Brothers dabbling in doo-wop.

Not only did none of these four become a hit in any field of music, none even received a new-release review in the trades.

I did unearth a miniscule mention in the September 24, 1955 Billboard R&B Beat: “[Promotion man] Bob Demain is back from a trip up the Coast plugging Big Maybelle's Okeh record of “Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On.” Quincy Jones, who did the arranging and backing on this one, will be out on the Okeh label soon as a single artist.”

Contrary to Demain's announcement, we know of no Quincy Jones solo recordings for Okeh.

Despite 1956 being an explosive year for Rock and Roll, it appears the entire recording industry gave up on “Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On.”

The evolution of the song remained on hold for nearly 18 months, when in the summer of '57, Jerry Lee resurrected it. By July, “Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On” was the ultimate crossover hit, at or near the top of every one of the major charts: Pop; Rock; R&B; and C&W.

Since then, dozens of top stars have recorded “Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On,” much to the joy of co-writers Dave Williams and Sonny David (though some labels credit only Williams).

DEAR JERRY: I am trying to locate a song from the mid-to-late 1960s, I think called “Highway Man.”

I believe the name of singer to be something like Curtis Leeach.
—John W. Parsons, Evansville, Ind.

DEAR JOHN: Other than one vowel too many, you have all the details. The singer is Curtis Leach.

Though clearly a truck driving song, the highway man in “Highway Man” is not the truck driver. He is a highway patrolman, who first saves the driver's life … then cites him for speeding.

Issued in 1964, “Highway Man” is an enjoyable adventure story, written by Leach, with instrumentation influenced by “Six Days on the Road” (Dave Dudley).

Portions of the melody turned up in 1969 on truck drivin' tune, Charlie Walker's “Moffett, Oklahoma.”

IZ ZAT SO? On December 14, 1965, in a mysterious confrontation, perhaps involving an intruder, Curtis Leach was stabbed in his left leg. Unfortunately, the blade cut the femoral (primary) artery and Curtis bled to death en route to the hospital.

One month later, Bill Anderson's “Golden Guitar,” one of Leach's many compositions, hit the Country charts, eventually peaking at No. 11

The Making of Pink Floyd: The Wall

By Gerald Scarfe
Foreword by Roger Waters

PINK FLOYD’S THE WALL
20 MILLION COPIES SOLD SINCE 1979
ONE OF THE TOP 25 BEST-SELLING ALBUMS OF ALL TIME

Twenty years after the inaugural live show of The Wall, Roger Waters is back on the road as part of a worldwide tour of the celebrated album—more than forty venues sold out in under two hours.

In conjunction with Waters’ tour, Da Capo Press will publish The Making of Pink Floyd: The Wall (Da Capo Press; September 15, 2010). In this striking new book, visionary Gerald Scarfe brings fans a never-before-seen look at the legendary band and the making of The Wall in all its forms—the iconic album, the larger-than-life stage show, the cult classic film, and the re-invented 2010 tour.

As the designer, director of animation, and driving creative force for Wish You Were Here and The Wall’s first stage show and film, Scarfe gives an intimate look at the band’s high and low points both on and off the stage. Starting with his introduction to Pink Floyd in 1973, Scarfe chronicles his personal experiences with the band, the conceptualization of The Wall album, the development of the live show and film, and a behind-the-scenes look at the revitalization for the 2010 tour.

Providing an insider’s look at the evolution of one of the most talked-about and well-loved rock albums, the book is full of storyboards, sketches, and photos—many of which have never been published. Fully authorized by Roger Waters and Pink Floyd, The Making of Pink Floyd: The Wall features exclusive interviews with Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason, The Wall actor Bob Geldolf, and director Alan Parker, along with complete lyrics.

Few other rock albums have enjoyed the longevity and incarnations as The Wall. The Making of Pink Floyd: The Wall offers Floyd fans, art enthusiasts, film buffs, and the casual music lover a window into the world of one of the most renowned music experiences of all time.

Gerald Scarfe has been the political cartoonist for the London Sunday Times for 42 years and has worked for The New Yorker magazine for nearly two decades. For many years he was involved with Pink Floyd in providing animated footage for all of their stage performances as well as jacket artwork for record covers and CDs. For The Wall he worked with Roger Waters on the original visual concepts for the album and the stage shows and was initially co-director and subsequently designer and director of the animation for the film. He has again worked with Roger Waters on the new stage show of The Wall now on tour in North America.

TAKE THAT! In 2004, Britney Spears threw a full cup of cola over a photographer. The snapper was waiting to take pictures of the singer and her new husband outside a subway take-away shop in Malibu, California.

Also in 2004, Incubus singer Brandon Boyd was arrested for carrying a switchblade in his bag while trying to board a plane at New York’s LaGuardia Airport on his way to a concert in Raleigh. Charged with criminal possession of a weapon, Boyd was able to make the concert. He says he forgot the knife was in the bag. DUH! you're going through airport security!

Off we go," says Jagger as the group starts up again. The Stones were touring to promote their latest album, 'A Bigger Bang.'

In 2006, an audio tape Bob Dylan recorded in 1959 with a high-school friend in his hometown of Hibbing, MN, went up for auction. The cassette featured Dylan singing three tunes.

In 2007, Bruce Springsteen was being sued for $850,000 by a man who claimed he backed out of a contract to buy a horse. Springsteen and his wife Patti Scialfa were both named in legal documents filed in Florida by Todd Minikus. He claimed the couple pulled out of a deal to pay $650,000 for a horse, named Pavarotti.

Queen's groundbreaking promo for their 1975 hit Bohemian Rhapsody was named the UK's best music video in 2007 in a survey of music fans. Out of 1,051 adults polled by O2, 30% named the six-minute video, (which took only three hours to shoot and cost a mere $5,000 to make), their favorite.

John Kay & Steppenwolf played the Dreamcatcher rally in Aberdeen, MD in 2007. The show closed out the group's 40th Anniversary Farewell Tour.

Pink Floyd's David Gilmour received the Outstanding Contribution to Music trophy at the Q Awards 2008 in London. The guitarist payed tribute to the recently deceased Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright. "He deserves this just as much as I do," says Gilmour. "His work was vitally important to (Floyd's) entire career."

KISS issued “Sonic Boom” in 2009. The album was part of a three-disc set that was sold exclusively at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores – and their online outlets. The collection contains “KISS Klassics,” 15 re-recorded hits and a DVD with footage of an ’09 concert in Buenos Aires. As part of their Halloween promotion Wal-Mart stores offer special KISS merchandise - T-shirts, wigs, makeup, limited edition M&M's and even versions of Mr. Potato Head. And that evening, the group was on The Late Show with David Letterman. "Our next guests are here to blow the roof off the dump, ladies and gentlemen," says Letterman. The "dump" would be the Ed Sullivan Theater. Amazing, didn't they do this in the 70's?
