found this very interesting. while i don't personally sell records on eBay at this time, i know many who do and the complaints are numerous. not to say there haven't been good times, but lately, from what i have heard and read, ebay is really making vinyl record sellers choose different avenues (www.therecordranch.com, amazon.com, ubid.com and many others or even build their own websites) in which to do business. read on:

eBay Seller Caught in Over-reaching Enforcement of Dupes Policy

By: Ina Steiner

Ebay's number one product? Frustration.

Last year eBay announced that they were going to create an algorithm (computers - no human interaction) that was going to scan all of the listings to assure that people would not be able to gain the system by listing the same product with the same photo in duplicate listings thereby gaining more exposure and cluttering the pages of eBay. Ebay continues to be the leader in irrational reactions and untried policy and procedures.

I am a large seller of vinyl records and it attracts some of the pickiest customers in any business.

great review at blogcritics.org about this classic cut and the story that goes with it....the song was certainly a part of my childhood music, still love the cut, especially the way kay does it:

Steppenwolf Steps Away from the "Wild" Side in 1968's Powerful "The Pusher"

By Kit O'Toole, BLOGCRITICS.ORG

Read the name "Steppenwolf," and one image immediately comes to mind: Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda on motorcycles, cruising to the tune "Born to Be Wild." The emerging rock group gained nationwide fame through the 1969 counterculture classic, Easy Rider, where their hard-driving music perfectly accompanied the film's story of rebellion. In addition, Steppenwolf is commonly credited with inventing the term "heavy metal" through the "Born to Be Wild" lyrics "I like smoke and lightning/Heavy metal thunder." Their other major hit, "Magic Carpet Ride," seamlessly blended harder rock and psychedelia, with lead singer John Kay's gravelly voice adding a dangerous edge to the tune. But another song of their successful 1968 debut album particularly encapsulates their edginess and willingness to take risks: "The Pusher."

if you are a fan of the smithereens (i am), there is a well written article/interview at nj.com

The Smithereens return with '2011'

By Tris McCall/The Star-Ledger

For 12 years, fans of the Smithereens have waited for an album of new material.

They knew frontman Pat DiNizio was a prolific songwriter. They picked up the entertaining covers albums made by the band: one devoted to Beatles songs, a Christmas album, a full-length treatment of “Tommy” by the Who. They caught the group in action at a Garden State bar or at B.B. King Blues Club and Grill in New York. The legendary Jersey rock quartet had never broken up; they hadn’t even taken a break. They sounded as tough and tuneful, and as full of ideas, as they had in the mid-’80s. A follow-up to “God Save the Smithereens,” released in 1999, had to be arriving soon. Right?

“There was simply no demand from record companies for a new Smithereens album,” says DiNizio......

Top 10 Band Stunts, Schemes, and Gimmicks of All Time

By Gwendolyn Elliott

With Radiohead giving away copies of their newspaper, The Universal Sigh, in conjunction with their new album The King of Limbs, it seems like an appropriate time to look back on some of the more gimmicky notions bands have had over the years. Publicity stunts, shameless acts of self-promotion, honest attempts to engage their fans: Here are the 10 most memorable stunts our favorite bands made history with.

Michael Wright

In a recent interview with RollingStone.com, Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness recalled the group’s early ’90s tours with rock legend Neil Young. Social D first opened for Young in 1991, after the release of their classic self-titled album. The group hit the road again with the guitar great in 1993 in support of their Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell CD.

and in music history for april 4th:

Elvis Presley recorded "Are You Lonesome Tonight" in 1960.

Also in 1960, RCA Victor Records announced that it will release all Pop singles in mono and stereo simultaneously, the first record company to do so. Elvis Presley's single, "Stuck on You" was RCA's first mono / stereo release.

In 1964, The Beatles held the top five places on the Billboard U.S. singles chart: #1 “Can’t Buy Me Love,” #2 “Love Me Do,” #3 “Roll Over Beethoven,” #4 “I Want to Hold You Hand” and #5 “Please Please Me.” The group also had another nine singles on the chart, bringing their total to 14 singles on the Hot 100.

In 1968, Bobby Goldsboro received a Gold record for the single, "Honey", which had spent 13 weeks on the Billboard chart, including five weeks at number one. It remains heavily played on the radio to this day and has been covered many times, although Todd Leopold of CNN named it the "Worst Song of All Time" in April 2006.

After hearing the news of Martin Luther King’s assassination in 1968, Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Joni Mitchell, Al Kooper and Ted Nugent congregated for an all night blues, folk and rock session at The New Generation Club in New York.

In 1983, Danny Rapp of Danny and The Juniors, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His band achieved two classic 1950's hits, "At the Hop" (#1) and "Rock and Roll is Here to Stay" (#19). He was 41 years old.

In 1996, Jerry Garcia's widow, Deborah, and Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir scatter part of Jerry's ashes in the Ganges River in India.

In 2008, Procol Harum founder Gary Brooker won his court battle over royalty rights to the band's most famous hit, 1967's "A Whiter Shade of Pale". In 2006, London's High Court awarded former keyboard player Matthew Fisher 40 percent of the copyright of the track, which has sold an estimated 10 million copies worldwide, after he successfully argued that he wrote the organ music to the song. Brooker appealed and judge John Mummery said that while Fisher should be credited with co-authorship, the fact that it took him 38 years to take the case to court meant he should not benefit financially.

born today, Dave Hill of Slade (1952) Frank Black of thePixies (1965) and the immortal Muddy Waters (McKinley Morganfield) was born in 1913. (died April 30, 1983)

Bill Evans 1968 Backed By Gomez and DeJohnette
by Michael Fremer
April 01, 2011

You could argue the advisability of naming a sophomore effort Everybody Digs Bill Evans but today it’s clear that everybody in fact does, or still does depending on your feelings about that second album’s title.

Evans is still revered by jazz fans generally and jazz fans who are audiophiles in particular, judging by all of the vinyl reissue action.

An enduring live set from The Montreux Jazz Festival recorded June 15th, 1968 has Evans joined in the short-lived trio with bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Jack DeJohnette. Gomez was with Evans for a decade plus, but Miles Davis wanted DeJohnette.

This is the only recording of DeJohnette playing with Evans and Gomez. The early years of Evan’s post Riverside period were tumultuous with frequency personnel changes as Evans dealt with his drug addiction.

How long ago was 1968? Consider Gene Lee’s liner notes that reference “Lolita” novelist Vladimir Nabakov, Charlie Chaplain and James Mason, all of whom “live” nearby.

This album finds Evans in a more exuberant, less introspective mood. Evan his balladry on “I Love You Porgy” (which inexplicably places Evan’s piano on the opposite side of the stage from where he plays for the rest of the set) starts moving towards a celebratory tone not usually associated with the tender tune.

The almost hour long set includes two Evans originals—“One For Helen” dedicated to his long time manager Helen Keane and “Walkin’ Up” (misnamed “Walking’ Up” on this reissue’s label). Other than a rendering of Miles’ “Nardis” that was a live concert staple for Evans, the rest consists of re-workings of well-known standards, which was an Evans specialty.

Gomez plays aggressively from center stage with greater percussive thrust than did Scott LaFaro and DeJohnette’s playing is endlessly inventive—particularly his brush and cymbal work— without being distracting.

The recording quality is quite good: closely miked and not an attempt to put you at the concert unless you were sitting onstage a few feet from the musicians. DeJohnette’s drum kit occupies the right channel (except on his superb solo on "Nardis" where the engineer wisely gives him more space), Gomez is center stage and Evan’s piano is to his right and spreads convincingly from center-right stage outward.

Original pressings sound messy, boxy and indistinct compared to this Speakers Corner reissue and an earlier, out of print one at 33 1/3 from Classic Records. They don’t sound identical but close enough (Classic no doubt had the original tape, Speakers Corner worked from a copy so the sound isn't quite as dynamic or "present" but it's still very good and far superior to the original pressing), with excellent instrumental timbres, particularly Evans' piano (though it doesn't sound like he was given the grandest grand) and both are well-pressed. Classic’s multi-LP 45rpm edition is something else again, but good luck finding one of those.

Not at the top of the Evans catalog but worthwhile nonetheless particularly since it’s the only recording of this trio with Jack DeJohnette.

and in music history for the day:

In 1956, Johnny Cash recorded “I Walk the Line” at Sun Studio. It would spend six weeks at #1 on the U.S. country jukebox charts that summer.

In 1964, The Beach Boys recorded their single, “I Get Around,” which became their first U.S. #1 over the summer.

In 1966, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass become the first act to have four LP's in the Top 10 of the Billboard album chart.  No wonder those albums are in every goodwill bin, there's too many of them (and i have them all!)

Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood and Dave Mason formed Traffic in 1967.

On this day in 1967 - The Beatles finished recording the album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."

In 1969, Bruce Springsteen’s group, Child, made their live debut at the Pandemonium Club, Wanamassa, New Jersey.

Janis Joplin was at #1 on the U.S. album charts in 1971 with Pearl.

Also in 1971, Ringo Starr releases "It Don't Come Easy", which will climb to #4 in the US and the UK.

In 1977, Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors" album went to #1 on the Billboard chart where it stayed for 31 weeks. Worldwide, the LP would sell over 25 million copies.

In 1987, one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time, Buddy Rich died from complications caused by a brain tumor, aged 69. Rich worked with many acts, including Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson and Tommy Dorsey’s band.

And in 2004, Paul Atkinson, guitarist for The Zombies, lost his battle with liver and kidney disease. He was 58. The band's biggest hits included "She's Not There", "Tell Her No" and "Time Of The Season".

Eric Johnson's Latest Release to Get Vinyl Treatment

Eric Johnson's latest release, 'Up Close,' was a long time in the making (five and a half years). But as evidenced by its reception and its impressive list of special guests (Sonny Landreth, Steve Miller, Jimmie Vaughan and Jonny Lang), the wait was well worth it.

Fortunately, fans will not have to wait long at all for a vinyl version of 'Up Close,' which is slated for release on April 19th via EMI Records and Vortexan Music.

The album will be issued on 180 gram vinyl and housed in a special double LP gatefold package with printed sleeves. Additionally, Up Close was remastered specially for this vinyl release by Jim Wilson.

Whitesnake's David Coverdale : "Evidently The Snake By Its Nature Has To Change Its Skin Every So Often"

Vocalist David Coverdale needs no introduction to most fans of classic hard rock. From his initial emergence back in the 70's as frontman of British heavy rock legends Deep Purple, through his seminal blues rock with Whitesnake later on in the decade, later enjoying mega platinum success with later versions of the band, through his work with Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page in Coverdale/Page - All the way to the present, the man is rightly regarded as a vocal legend.

Pink Floyd’s Waters and Gilmour to Reunite

Michael Leonard

Roger Waters has confirmed he is likely to be joined on stage by former Pink Floyd bandmate David Gilmour on his tour of The Wall – but only for one gig. Waters and Gilmour have had a fractious relationship for many years, but did play together in Pink Floyd at 2005’s Live 8 charity show. There now seems to be another chance to see them share a stage.

“I hear the rumors,” Waters says.

In 1924, the first gramophone to change records automatically went on sale in the US.

In 1957, the Everly Brothers release "Bye Bye Love", a song that was rejected by 30 labels before Cadence Records picked it up. The song went to #2 on the US Pop chart and #1 on the Country & Western chart.

In 1961, The Beatles began a three-month residency at The Top Ten Club, Hamburg, Germany, playing 92 straight nights. The group played for seven hours a night on weekdays and eight hours at weekends with a 15-minute break every hour. It was during this visit that Astrid Kirchherr cut Stuart Sutcliffe’s hair into the style destined to become known as the “Beatle haircut” which The Beatles later adopted themselves.

In 1966, The Troggs recorded (using 45 minutes of spare studio time) “Wild Thing” at Pye Studios in Marble Arch, London, produced by Larry Page, with Mick Jagger present as an observer. The song went on to be a #1 U.S. and #2 U.K. hit in June.

David Bowie's first solo single, "Do Anything You Say," was released in 1966.

45rpm Record Turns Sixty-Two Today

written by Robert Benson

Happy Birthday to an old friend, the 45 rpm record officially turns 62 years old today!

The 45rpm record was initially introduced in 1949 by RCA Records as a smaller, more durable replacement for the heavy 78 shellac-based records of the time. The 45 was created by RCA as a competitive move against one their rival record companies, Columbia, which had just introduced the new microgroove 33 1/3 rpm LP. The number 45 came from taking 78 and subtracting Columbia's new 33 to equal the 45. Record companies and consumers alike faced an uncertain future as to which format would survive the 78rpm or the 45rpm; in what was known as the “War of the Speeds.” In 1949 Capitol and Decca started issuing the new LP format and RCA relented and issued its first LP in January 1950. But the 45 rpm was gaining in popularity and Columbia issued its first 45s in February 1951. Soon other record companies saw the mass consumer appeal the new format allowed and by 1954 more than 200 million 45s had been sold.

So On March 31, 1949, RCA Victor released "Texarkana Baby" b/w "Bouquet of Roses" by Eddy Arnold. The first 45 to hit the Billboard charts was "A -- You're Adorable" by Perry Como, listed on the charts on May 7, 1949. The next week, the year's biggest hit appeared on the Billboard charts -- "Riders In The Sky (A Cowboy Legend)” by Vaughn Monroe. The first 45rpm records were monaural and as stereo sound became more prevalent and popular in the 1960s, almost all 45rpm records were manufactured in stereo.

The historical and commercial significance of the 45rpm record has varied over time, the technological developments in recorded music and according to the audience of the particular artists and musical genres. In general, 45 records were more important to the music acts who sold music to the younger audiences (mostly teenagers) who tend to have limited financial resources and shorter attention spans. That said, the golden age for the 45 was in the 1950s and 1960s in early development of rock music. They were affordable and allowed artists the freedom of releasing a single song as opposed to a whole LP. Conversely, some singles helped to launch the sales of the albums that the musicians were promoting.

The length of the songs also evolved. In the 1950s, it was common for songs to be anywhere from two to two and a half minutes long and in the 1960s; the three minute single became the norm. This length was very convenient and fit the AM radio format very well. Millions of demo records were sent out to radio stations with specific instructions as to which song was supposed to be the ‘hit single,’ although there were some DJs that played the ‘B’ sides and those songs became hits. Elvis Presley was one of the first artists to release the ‘double-sided single’, meaning that both songs would ultimately end up on the charts. The Beatles followed suit and were also one of the first recording artists to push the envelope, so to speak and commonly had songs over the three-minute norm. In fact, there are some singles that had to be edited by radio stations and shortened to fit their particular formats. Don McLean’s 1972 hit “American Pie” is an example, the single was split up into two parts on the 45. The Beatles broke new ground in 1968 with their over seven minute epic “Hey Jude.”

The sales of the 45s were recorded on the record charts in most countries in a Top 40 format and these charts were often published in magazines (Billboard), television shows (American Bandstand) and radio programs often had the Top 40 countdown shows (Casey Casem). However, the 45 rpm record can never duplicate the sales figures from when the format was in its heyday because when the 45 was at its peak, it was the way to get music to the music consumer. Today there are too many other formats competing for the music dollar.

Nowadays, they still manufacture 45 rpm records, but on a much smaller scale than decades ago. Indie bands, r&b artists and punk bands love the format; it makes the music affordable for their target audience and, after all these years, 45 rpm records are still highly sought after by record collectors. Happy Birthday to an old friend, here’s for many more!

Metallica's 'Master of Puppets' Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Metallica's definitive 'Master of Puppets' album is celebrating its 25th birthday this year. Yes, it's really been two-and-a-half decades since the album forcibly impacted, forever changed and wholly improved the heavy metal landscape with its power and speed.

In honor of the 25th anniversary of the album's release, Noisecreep caught up with a "battery" of metal musicians from Sepultura to Arsis to Unearth to find out how, when and where they first experienced this most important of records

vinyl record store doing well in the twin cities!

6 Questions
Treehouse Records celebrates another 10 years

By Loren Green

"Vinyl will always survive. Hopefully indie records stores can too." - Mark Trehus

It's been almost forty years since Oar Folkjokeopus first opened its doors on 26th and Lyndale. The storefront has outlived the 8-track, the cassette, and the cd as the dominant musical forms pushed by an industry whose focus has always been on moving units. As the record industry has promoted these varied formats, Treehouse has always kept space on their shelves for owner Mark Trehus' preference: the vinyl record. In 2001, then-manager Mark Trehus took ownership of the business and Dan Cote became manager, changing the name to Treehouse Records in the process. In April, the store will celebrate this ten year milestone with a live show at Hell's Kitchen downtown and a password sale for members of their email list.

Black and white & blues

Fan crosses racial boundaries to learn everything about genre

Written by CHARLES RUNNELLS

George Mitchell was looking for Elvis.

Instead, the radio dial accidentally landed on a Muddy Waters song. And Mitchell’s life changed forever.

“I said, ‘What was that?’” recalls Mitchell, 67, sitting in his Fort Myers living room surrounded by blues records, blues art and an oil-can bass he uses to jam with blues musicians. “And I said, ‘Man, that sounds fantastic. I never heard anything like that.’”

He was an eighth-grader at the time, listening to the radio with a friend.

In the years and decades that followed, Mitchell dove headfirst into the blues. He collected rare vinyl records

great story about vinyl on our college campuses!

Vinyl Revival

Caitlin Taylor

Vinyl records, popular back in the 1950s, have started to come back in popularity, especially to college students.

Bailee Claypool, sophomore in pre-med, started collecting records about a year ago and already has anywhere from 50-100 records in her collection.

"I randomly started collecting records," Claypool said. "I really like classic rock music, and instead of downloading illegally off the Internet, they (vinyl records) are pretty easy to get a hold of."

Claypool says she thinks vinyl records have become a lot more popular. At least seven people she knows collect them.

Whitesnake to Release Live at Donington 1990 CD/DVD

Michael Wright

1990 marked the end of an era for David Coverdale’s hard rock band, Whitesnake. After a two-year run with the virtuosic lineup of guitarists Steve Vai and Adrian Vandenberg, bassist Rudy Sarzo and drummer Tommy Aldridge, the group called it a day at the end of their Liquor & Poker Tour. But before they walked away from their arena glory, the band co-headlined Britain’s legendary Monsters of Rock festival at Castle Donington. The show has long been requested by Whitesnake fans (Whitesnake.com reports that it is far-and-away “the most requested product from fans of the ’Snake”), and at long last that request has been answered.

On June 3 in Europe (and June 7 in North America), Frontiers Records will release Live at Donington 1990 as both a DVD and a two-CD set.

and in music history for the day

Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" was released in 1958. It would enter the Billboard charts six weeks later and rise to number 8 on the Hot 100 and number two on the R&B chart. The song's original lyrics referred to Johnny as a "colored boy", but Berry later acknowledged that he changed it to "country boy" to ensure radio play.

The Shirelles' "Soldier Boy" was released in the US on Sceptor Records in 1962. The tune becomes the group's biggest hit, reaching number one, selling over a million copies and earning a Gold record.

In 1964, The Beatles set a recording industry record that may never be equaled. They held the top 5 positions on the US singles chart with "Can't Buy Me Love" at number 1, "Twist and Shout" at number 2, "She Loves You" at number 3, "I Want to Hold Your Hand" at number 4 and "Please Please Me" at number 5. In Canada, they had nine of the top 10 singles, while the Australian charts saw them occupying the first six places.

In 1967, on the first night of a 24-date tour featuring a bizarre combination of The Walker Brothers, Cat Stevens and Engelbert Humperdinck, Jimi Hendrix sets fire to his guitar live on stage for the first time. (he suffered minor burns, however a legend was born!)

The Beatles Official Fan Club closed in 1972. The Beatles Monthly magazine, run in association by Sean O’Mahoney, had ceased publication three years previously.

In 1982, the Doobie Brothers announced that they were splitting up.

In 1986, O’Kelly Isley, of The Isley Brothers, died aged 48 of a heart attack. The trio were best known for their 1962 hit version of “Twist And Shout” (as covered by The Beatles), which had originally been recorded the previous year by The Top Notes.

Prince's "Sign O' The Times" LP was released in the US in 1987.

Guns N' Roses released their single "Patience" in 1989.

In 1995, Jimmy Page escaped being knifed when a man rushed the stage at a Page & Plant gig at Auburn Hills, Michigan, but was stopped by two security guards, whom he wounded instead. After his arrest, the assailant told police that he wanted to kill Page because of the satanic music he was playing.

Also in 1995, Mexican American singer Selena was murdered aged 23 by the president of her fan club Yolanda Saldívar. Warner Brothers made a film based on her life, starring Jennifer Lopez, in 1997.

In 2007, a new world record for the longest non-stop concert was set by hundreds of musicians in Japan. The performance began on the evening of 23 March in the city of Omi, with musicians aged between six and 96 taking turns with over 2,000 tunes being performed over 182 hours. Organizers praised the musicians, one of whom carried on despite a major earthquake during her piano piece. The previous world record was set in Canada in 2001 with 181 hours.  one question...why?

here are some more details:

McIntosh Laboratory, a renowned manufacturer of fine audio systems, is proud to have worked with songwwriter/producer J. Ralph for the release of his Wretches & Jabberers Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, which will debut on CD and vinyl LP April 5, 2011. A portion of all proceeds will benefit the Autism Society of America and the Wretches & Jabberers Fund of the Institute on Communication and Inclusion at Syracuse University.

J. RALPH ASSEMBLES UNBELIEVABLE CAST OF LEGENDARY VOICES FOR 'WRETCHES & JABBERERS' OUT APRIL 5, 2011

"THE REASONS WHY" SHORTLISTED FOR OSCAR'S BEST ORIGINAL SONG
Music Accompanies Incredible Journey of Autism

Newsweek proclaims "And if Autism Were a Song, It Might Sound Like This..."
"Wretches & Jabberers is one of the best original soundtracks from the year." - Denver Westword

J. RALPH ALSO WRITES & PRODUCES END TITLE SONG TO  GRAND JURY PRIZE WINNING SUNDANCE FILM, 'HELL AND BACK AGAIN,' PERFORMED BY WILLIE NELSON

"Like 'Taps' in its power, the film's closing song 'Hell and Back' is magnificently pitched by Willie Nelson, his voice cracking and soaring with full-dress honor."  -- The Hollywood Reporter

J. Ralph, the acclaimed singer, composer, songwriter and producer well known for his scores to the last two Academy Award-winning documentaries The Cove and Man On Wire, draws upon an astounding collection of voices, united in a harmony of purpose for the brilliant and expansive Wretches & Jabberers Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, which will be released on April 5, 2011. Metromix said "This is unlike any soundtrack you've ever heard" and the "delicate, folksy tunes address the film's subject matter in ways that are subtle but evocative...highly recommended."

The prolific composer also wrote the music and lyrics and produced the end title song for "Hell and Back Again." The movie just won Sundance's prestigious Grand Jury Documentary and Cinematography Awards at this year's festival. The film's closing song is performed by renowned country singer, Willie Nelson, accompanied by J. Ralph on guitar.

Joining J. Ralph on the "Wretches & Jabberers" soundtrack are: Antony, Devendra Banhart, Paul Brady, Bonnie Bramlett, Vashti Bunyan, Martin Carthy, Judy Collins, Lila Downs, Vincent Gallo, David Garza, Ben Harper, Scarlett Johansson, Nic Jones, Norah Jones, Leah Siegel, Carly Simon, Stephen Stills, Ben Taylor, and Bob Weir.

The album kicks off with J. Ralph singing "The Reasons Why" and is soon joined by a complement of collaborators, including the unmistakable Norah Jones on "Change is Gonna Come," and Ben Harper, who lends raw emotion to "More Like You," singing "I can't speak /but I need you to listen."

"To me the story is about finding a voice, for those who've suffered so long without one of their own," says J. Ralph, referencing the inspiration for the album's 20 songs (all of them written or co-written by J. Ralph) borne from the namesake film by Academy Award winning director Gerardine Wurzburg. Wretches & Jabberers chronicles the global journey of a pair of men with autism, Larry Bissonnette and Tracy Thresher, who set out to demystify their disability and reveal its intense isolation, ultimately demonstrating that "Autism is not abnormality of the brain as much as abnormality of experience," per Bissonnette.

But the musical journey that created the soundtrack is equally compelling, spanning multiple continents and iconic stars from five decades, in what's likely the most impressive gathering of talent in recent times.  J. Ralph saw the subjects of the documentary as strolling minstrels going from towns to continents, a parallel to folk music, and soon Ralph's journey became a modern day road story of its own.  Everyone J. Ralph reached out to was moved by the experience of the film's subjects. It started with a couple of phone calls to Ben Harper, and Scarlett Johansson, whose rich, smoky vocal evokes a 1930s Paris nightclub on "One Whole Hour." The stomp of "Lying Down Statues" with Devendra Banhart marks the album's rhythmic climax, while in contrast Bob Weir on "Breaking The Hold" evokes a Workingman's-era back porch session.

Ultimately the journey brought him to the elder statesmen of English folk royalty. Martin Carthy - a legend to the legends known for penning the first popular arrangement of "Scarborough Fair" - and Nic Jones, whose career was cut short in 1980 due to a tragic car crash, but was inspired to join on "Pretty Words Lie," his first studio recording in over 30 years, thanks to an in-person appeal.  A gifted artist and songwriter, J. Ralph set out to lend a voice through music to honor those who spent a lifetime searching for a voice of their own. And through sheer perseverance, and perhaps a touch of brilliance, has drawn upon an astounding collection of voices, and an album that stands as a musical masterwork.

Another key element in the collaborative effort for the soundtrack was J.Ralph's close collaboration with McIntosh, a world-renowned manufacturer known for its legendary performance that has defined the very best in sound reproduction for over 60 years.  McIntosh not only provided all the world-class audio gear used for critical listening during mixing, but also helped connect with J.Ralph with longtime McIntosh owner Bob weir and assisted with the creation and mastering of the limited edition CD’s and vinyl to ensure the highest possible listening experience.

Wretches & Jabberers Original Motion Picture Soundtrack debuted on January 11th as part of an exclusive charity promotion with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Autism Society of America and the Wretches & Jabberers Fund of the Institute on Communication and Inclusion at Syracuse University. The wide release follows on April 5, 2011, with spectacular sounding limited edition CDs and vinyl thanks to J. Ralph's close collaboration with McIntosh, a world-renowned manufacturer known for its legendary performance that has defined the very best in sound reproduction for over 60 years. McIntosh not only provided all the world-class audio gear used for critical listening during mixing, but also collaborated closely with J. Ralph on the creation and mastering of the limited edition CDs and vinyl to ensure the highest possible listening experience.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 28, 2011

DEAR JERRY: I am a picker who is drawn to unusual items, the weirder the better.

That's why, even with no way to play it, I couldn't resist picking up a 78 rpm when I noticed it was by Katherine Hepburn. I found it at a junk store across the river in Cincinnati, and it was only a buck.

The number is X-103, the company name is Alcoa, and the label gives a Los Angeles address.

Affixed under her name is a piece of paper with “NON-COMMERCIAL USE ONLY - NOT TO BE RESOLD” typewritten with an ancient black and red ribbon.

I suspect the song title is underneath, but the warning notice is secured with cellophane tape and any attempt to remove it would tear the label right off.

I never heard Hepburn sang, so there must be a story behind this record. Who better than you to fill in the blanks?
—Jody Watkins, Covington, Ky.

DEAR JODY: Before we get to the blanks, proofreaders out there should know you spelled Katharine's name exactly as it is shown on the label. The mistake is the manufacturer's, not yours.

Your one flub, however, is confusing the aluminum products outfit (Alcoa) with Alco Recording Co.

Hepburn did sing occasionally, mostly in brief film scenes, yet she does not sing on the Alco recording. Rather, it is a speech she delivered in 1947.

The disc you found in Cincy is only half of the original set, in which the spoken words are divided into four parts, using two 78s.

You're right about leaving the labels just as they are, especially since I am about to tell you exactly what is printed under the typed notice:

“Katherine Hepburn Speaking for Freedom at the Henry Wallace Meeting of 30,000 People at Gilmore Stadium, Los Angeles, Calif., May 19, 1947. Presented by Progressive Citizens of America.”

The Progressive Citizens of America backed the Progressive Party, whose 1948 presidential nominee was Henry A. Wallace, formerly the 33rd vice-president (1941-1945), under Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Wallace was the intended keynote speaker, but Kate stole the show and therefore attracted nearly all of the media attention. Newspapers and magazines showed no interest in printing Wallace's message.

Meanwhile, the Progressive Citizens of America claimed to have printed and distributed over three million copies of Katharine Hepburn's speech. They also blitzed radio stations with rebroadcasts of her discourse, the same message as on the 78 album, “Katherine Hepburn Speaking for Freedom.”

Among those denounced, at the meeting and on the recording, by Hepburn and Wallace are: President Truman and his Democratic supporters; the Republican Party en masse; Attorney General Tom Clark (D) (later appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court); the House Committee on Un-American Activities; Chairman J. Parnell Thomas (R); the California Legislature's Fact-Finding Committee on Un-American Activities; California Senator Jack B. Tenney (R) (writer of the hit song, “Mexicali Rose”); the Hollywood Motion Picture Alliance; and others responsible for a “plot to foist thought control on the liberal and progressive people of America.”

The Progressive Party, as well as the Gilmore event, was openly supported by the American Communist Party, a fact successfully used against them in the campaigns of both Republicans and Democrats.

Pulling off history's greatest presidential election upset, incumbent Harry S. Truman (D) defeated heavily favored N.Y. Governor Thomas E. Dewey (R).

Progressive's Henry Wallace received only 2.4 percent of the popular vote and failed to carry even one state.

One dollar for the one record is picker pleaser, though the complete Alco package can sell for about $100.

IZ ZAT SO? There is an unexpected connection between the Progressive Party supporters in 1949 of Boston mayoralty candidate, Walter A. O'Brien, and the Kingston Trio's 1959 hit, “M.T.A.”

O'Brien could not afford media ads, so he recruited a folk group to write and sing songs, among them a “Vote for Walter O'Brien” rendition of “M.T.A.”

The Kingston Trio changed the candidate's first name to suggest a “Vote for George O'Brien” will get poor Charlie off the M.T.A. .

this must be a juicy, dirt filled writing, otherwise, who'd be interested in an old rocker's life?

Sammy Hagar's Book is Number One on New York Times Best Seller List

Former Van Halen and current Chickenfoot singer Sammy Hagar's new autobiography, 'Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock,' landed the number one spot on the New York Times Hardcover Non-Fiction Best Seller list this week.

The Red Rocker made quite a bit of noise and generated a boatload of publicity when he talked about being abducted by aliens on The Howard Stern Show and during interviews with MTV.

talking about listening to records, it is an experience, not just filler background music!

The Return of Vinyl

Jared Lucas Nathanson fondly recalls his creamsicle-colored plastic record player; he would prance all over the house with it listening to the Mister Rogers album “Josephine the Short-Neck Giraffe” when he was just three years old. When he was eight, Nathanson graduated to funk band Heatwave and Saturday Night Fever, then as a teenager onto Men At Work. He’s been a record collector ever since. Nathanson is now 38 and plays in Boston-based blues, pop-rock band The HeartSleeves and dreams of distributing his music on vinyl: “When you put your soul into your music, wouldn’t you rather someone listened to it in that thoughtful and respectful context if you could?”

Nathanson is not alone. More and more Boston audiophiles are buying vinyl records in the age of digital music.

wait, this is a vinyl record blog, right? why post this? well, maybe this is the way of the future with digital music, poor souls

7digital to offer first 24-bit new album release

British rock band Radiohead are now offering an exclusive better-than-CD-quality version of their new album The King of Limbs via 7digital.

The online music retailer has confirmed that it is now selling a 24-bit FLAC version of the album, a world first for a major artist.

It is now available to customers in 32 territories, including the US, and is also being offered in 16-bit FLAC and 320kbps MP3 formats.

7digital chief executive Ben Drury said that the company is pioneering 24-bit releases and will continue to support them.

"The Radiohead album was recorded in 24-bit digital audio and it's great listeners will now be able to download and hear the album in the quality it was recorded at," Mr Drury noted.

FLAC is an open source audio compression format that is lossless because, unlike with MP3, no audio elements are lost when creating a digital file from its source.

DEEP PURPLE have announced their first tour in North America in four years, and the pioneering rock band--featuring classic members Ian Gillan (lead vocals), Roger Glover (bass) and Ian Paice (drums, percussion)--will perform for the first time in North America with a symphony orchestra in each city (except San Francisco). Appleseed Cast Prep New EP

By Josiah Hughes

Long-running emo unit the Appleseed Cast have continued their evolution as a forward-thinking rock band, most recently with their 2009 album Sagarmatha. Showing no signs of slowing down, they will return this June with a follow-up EP called Middle States via Graveface Records.

According to a press release, the group set up a home recording studio for Middle States, finding a "relaxed pace and familial setting." Ultimately, the write-up explains that "Middle States gives insight into a band that is constantly reinventing itself and growing stronger with each passing year."

Members of the Graveface Record Club will get the vinyl on orange crush/baby blue A-side/B-side vinyl, while regular customers will receive it on milky clear/aqua blue A-side/B-side vinyl. Either way, the record will be a different colour on each side, which is pretty awesome.

Both the CD and LP version will come with a promotional poster featuring the album art, while the first 500 CD and LP orders will be hand-numbered and also include a non-album art poster.

another charming story of how the 'younger' generation are turning on their turntables and playing records!

In a digital age, teens discovering charms of vinyl records

BY LEANNE ITALIE/ASSOCIATED PRESS

In most ways, Sarah McCarthy is your average high schooler. She has a job, college plans, but also a peculiar passion for a 16-year-old: She's a vinyl junkie.

To this senior from Centreville, Md., there's nothing like the raw crackle and the depth of sound she can spin from the dusty stash of records she found in the basement of her grandfather -- yes, grandfather.

"He gave me his receiver and speaker system and told me to listen to it the way it was made to be listened to," McCarthy says. "I've turned a lot of my friends on to it."

Sure, she has an iPod, but she also has a vinyl collection of 250 records and counting. Sure, there's a broader '70s renaissance in the air, but buying bellbottoms doesn't touch the commitment of teens unearthing old turntables and records.

a new record store in kansas city!

Midtown is next for a Vinyl Renaissance

By TIMOTHY FINN The Kansas City Star

The rumors have been confirmed, with a few alterations.

A record store will open in midtown, but not in the site of Streetside Records at 4128 Broadway in Westport, which closed in January.

Dan Phillips will open his second Vinyl Renaissance & Audio at 1415 W. 39th St., in the old Boomerang building. The grand opening is scheduled for April 16, which is also National Record Store Day.

Phillips also owns the Vinyl Renaissance at 10922 Shawnee Mission Parkway in Shawnee. Phillips said he chose the 39th Street spot over the old Streetside store for two reasons: location and size.

and in music history for today:

In 1957, Buddy Knox became the first artist in the Rock 'n' Roll era to write his own number one hit when "Party Doll" topped the Billboard chart. Buddy would go on to place four more songs in the Top 40 between 1957 and 1961.

In 1963, 16 year old Lesley Gore recorded her breakthrough hit, "It's My Party". Producer Quincy Jones hurried Gore into the studio when he found out that Phil Spector was going to cut the song with The Crystals. The single would reach #1 in the US and #9 in the UK.

Also in 1963, The Chiffons enjoy the first of their five Billboard Top 40 hits when "He's So Fine" climbs to #1.

In 1967 - The cover of the Beatles' "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" was staged and photographed.

The collage depicted more than 70 famous people, including writers, musicians, film stars and (at Harrison's request) a number of Indian gurus. The final grouping included Marlene Dietrich, Carl Gustav Jung, W.C. Fields, Diana Dors, Elvis Presley, James Dean, Bob Dylan, Issy Bonn, Marilyn Monroe, Aldous Huxley, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Sigmund Freud, Aleister Crowley, Edgar Allan Poe, Karl Marx, Oscar Wilde, William S. Burroughs, Marlon Brando, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, and controversial comedian Lenny Bruce. Also included was the image of the original Beatles' bass player, the late Stuart Sutcliffe. Pete Best said in a later NPR interview that Lennon borrowed family medals from his mother Mona for the shoot, on condition that he did not lose them. Adolf Hitler, Mahatma Gandhi, and Jesus Christ were requested by Lennon, but ultimately they were left out, even though a cutout of Hitler was in fact made.

For a complete list of everyone on the cover go to Sgt Pepper

Also in 1967 - During an appearance by The Jimi Hendrix Experience on Top of the Pops to plug their latest single, “Purple Haze,” a technician mistakenly put on the backing track to Alan Price’s “Simon Smith and His Amazing Dancing Bear,” to which Hendrix responded, “I don’t know the words to this one, man.”

In 1992, the soundtrack to Wayne's World was the number 1 album in the US. It featured the return to the charts of Queen's, "Bohemian Rhapsody", actually making the song a bigger hit the second time around. Tracks by Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Alice Cooper, as well as a new version of "Dream Weaver" from Gary Wright, were also included on the LP.

Pink Floyd released the album "The Division Bell" in 1994.

In 2007, a man was arrested after trying to force his way into Paul McCartney's mansion, screaming: "I must get to him." The man, driving at high speeds, burst through security patrols and drove across fields and gardens until he was finally halted by trees and a fence just yards from Sir Paul's six-bedroom home at Peasmarsh. The man fled as teams of police arrived, but gave himself up after a three-mile chase. He was later detained under the Mental Health Act and did not face any criminal charges.

birthday wishes to Norah Jones (1979), Tracy Chapman (1964), the immortal Eric Clapton (1945) and Jim Dandy Mangrum of Black Oak Arkansas (1948), among others.
