Doris Day releases new album at the age of 87

The former Hollywood star’s comeback record features songs by the Beach Boys and Joe Cocker

By Jonathan Harwood

Post-war Hollywood star Doris Day is making a musical comeback - at the age of 87. The actress and singer has not appeared in a film since 1968 and her last album (a greatest hits compilation) came out in 1994. She is now best known for her work as an animal rights campaigner.

But her latest offering as a singer, My Heart, comes out next month. It is a compilation of unreleased songs produced by her only son Terry Melcher, who died in 1994 aged 62. He was influential in the west coast music scene of the 1960s, working with The Byrds and Beach Boys, and the selection of tunes on the album may surprise those who associate Day with songs like Que Sera, Sera and Move Over Darling. Included on the new record are a version of Joe Cocker's You Are So Beautiful and the Beach Boys' Disney Girls.

Many of the songs were first recorded in the 1980s for her shortlived TV show, but never saw the light of day. They were subsequently remastered by Melcher before he died, but were gathering dust before Sony approached her about releasing a new album.

another great story about the vinyl revival!

Vinyl Records Making a Comeback

By: Nick Hausen

CARBONDALE -- Many of us remember when listening to music meant putting a record on the turntable. In the past 25 years or so, vinyl has been edged out by compact discs and digital music players. Now, records are making some noise in the music business again. An increase in vinyl sales started to emerge several years ago.

"It's going up probably about 50% a year and it really started about five years ago," said Plaza Records Owner Kim Curlee.

It's Official: Reunited Original Lineup Of BLACK SABBATH Working On New Album

BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi has confirmed to Birmingham Mail that the band's original lineup has reunited and is rehearsing for a tour and new studio album.

Iommi and singer Ozzy Osbourne wrote new material in June for a record that will be released next year.

"We're really looking forward to it and I think the stuff we've been writing is really good," said Iommi. "It's more back to the old original stuff."

He added that the reunion has been kept under wraps for some time.

"It's all been very hush-hush. Ozzy's been the worst at trying to hold it back. He's doing a lot of TV and he's being asked stuff about a reunion and he's going, 'Well, I never say never.' He told me, 'I don't know what to say."

Boston’s New Album Will Feature the Late Brad Delp on Vocals

According to a new statement from classic rock favorites Boston, the band is almost done — specifically, “nearly 85% complete” — with work on a new studio album that will feature vocals from late singer Brad Delp.

The upcoming album would be the first new music from the group since the tragic 2007 suicide of Delp, who sang lead vocals on all of Boston’s classic hits, and their first new album since 2002's ‘Corporate America,’ the sound of which represented a radical departure for the band.

INDIE-DANCE POP ROCKERS
THE HUNDRED DAYS RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM “REALLY?”
TODAY, AUGUST 16, 2011

SIZZLING VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE “SEX U” TURNS HEADS, GRABS ATTENTION ACROSS THE INTERNET

TOUR DATES CONTINUE TO BE CONFIRMED THROUGHOUT THE US

Whatever happened to good ole fashioned bombast? We thought it was gone until we heard “Sex U.” The lead-off track on San Francisco’s The Hundred Days’ debut is a rare glimpse into a dying breed of freaky dance-rock songs that are awesome, above all, because they are big and fun and cheeky.”
–RCRD_LBL

“The single, ‘Sex U’, is a freak-out dance-rock anthem for late nights, models, booze, and sexy excesses,”
–AltSounds

"Sex U is a powerful dance hit that makes you feel...dirty, but in a good way!"
–Beautiful Buzzz

Some young bands search for their sound for years, trying many different things in hopes of finding just the right combination. But for San Francisco-based band The Hundred Days, the four twenty-something year old musicians found themselves able to discover and perfect their sound in just one-hundred days and nights by locking themselves in a house until they hit upon the perfect formula. Their debut album, “Really?”, to be released August 16, 2011, is a collection of critically-acclaimed indie-rock gems that are as catchy as they are clever and sonically arresting.

"Really?" is the latest project from the production team of Michael Patterson (Beck, Ladytron, She Wants Revenge) and Nic Jodoin (Great Northern). With driving rhythms, soaring guitars, textural keyboards and powerful vocal melodies, The Hundred Days push indie/alt rock in new directions. Drawing from a variety of influences (post punk, alternative, britpop), the band's familiar, yet intrinsically unique sound has been compared to The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Radiohead as well as contemporary rockers Franz Ferdinand, The Bravery and The Killers. A moody, dynamic indie rock band, The Hundred Days showcase tight musicianship complemented by razor-sharp pop writing capabilities with both sophistication and urgency.

Their first single from the album, “Sex U” and accompanying video has attracted an enormous buzz on the internet, with NME naming it one of the “10 Best Free MP3s”. The video, directed by David Dutton, follows the band on a wild night out on the town where the ladies they meet aren’t exactly what they seem. Press has been clamoring for it after it premiered on Baeble, followed by a featured Video of the Day on Spinner and Consequence of Sound, among other sites.

Explaining the band's ever-evolving sound on the new album, lead vocalist and guitarist Jonathan Smith said, "Over time, we have come to favor live shows where people are dancing. Hence we seem to be moving in a more dance-able direction in the studio, as well."

"We definitely all share a love for English bands - from the Beatles onward - and mostly agree on what we think sounds good," explains Jimmy Chen, guitarist and keyboardist. "But, this band is democratic in every way. There are a lot of different ideas floating around which often clash. The tension adds to the sound.

The band has toured extensively across the U.S. as well as the UK, and has played major festivals and showcases including SXSW, the CMJ Marathon in NYC, Noise Pop Festival and the BFD Festival at Shoreline Amphitheatre alongside Moby, MGMT and Pennywise, among others. The band has scheduled a West Coast tour for August of 2011 with plans for a full US tour to be announced soon.

and in music history for today, August 16th:

In 1957, Buddy Holly and the Crickets played the Apollo Theatre in Harlem and were booed by the mostly Black crowd who were expecting to see an R&B group that also used the name 'the Crickets'. By the end of the night however, the audience was cheering for the Lubbock, Texas band. Also on the bill that night were Roy Hamilton, Shep And The Limelites and Clarence "Frogman" Henry.

Also in 1957, for his first effort at Imperial Records, Ricky Nelson records "Be Bop Baby", which already has 750,000 advance orders. The song will go on to sell over a million copies and reach #3 on the Billboard chart.

In 1962, two years and four days after joining, Pete Best was fired from The Beatles by manager Brian Epstein, who was told by record producer George Martin that he wanted to use a more experienced session drummer on the band's recordings. John, Paul and George had long admired the work of Rory Storm And The Hurricanes' drummer Ringo Starr, who jumped at the chance to join them. After his dismissal, Pete Best would never have any further communication with his former mates.

Also in 1962, Peter, Paul and Mary released their first US Top 10 hit, "If I Had a Hammer", a standard Folk song that had been around since 1949.

In 1965, Mike Smith of the Dave Clark Five broke two ribs when he was pulled off the stage by fans in Chicago.

Earth, a new band featuring Bruce Springsteen, made their live debut in Red Bank, NJ in 1968.

In 1969 - Saturday at the Woodstock Festival featured Quill, Country Joe McDonald, John Sebastian, Santana, Keef Hartley Band, Incredible String Band, Canned Heat, Mountain, Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin and the Kozmic Band, Sly & the Family Stone, Who and the Jefferson Airplane.

Also in 1969, Hippie leader Abbie Hoffman is knocked offstage by Pete Townshend while attempting to make a political statement during the Who's set at Woodstock. Later, Townshend says he didn't know it was Hoffman at the time.

In 1974, the Ramones made their live debut at CBGB in New York.

Peter Gabriel announced he was leaving Genesis in 1975.

In 1957, 42 year old Elvis Presley was found dead at his Graceland mansion. Presley's girlfriend, Ginger Alden, awoke in the afternoon and noticed that he was not in bed and found him lying on the floor of the bathroom. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful and at 3:30 p.m. he was pronounced dead. After an examination of the body, it is revealed that Presley's body contained butabarbital, codeine, morphine, pentobarbital, Placidyl, Quaalude, Valium and Valmid. It had been five years since the King had a US Top Ten hit with the number 2 song, "Burning Love". His last US number 1 was 1969's "Suspicious Minds". He left an estate valued at 4.9 million dollars, which by 1993 had grown to between 50 and 100 million.

In 1979, the biggest single of the summer, The Knack's "My Sharona" was awarded a Gold record for selling one million copies. The Knack's Doug Fieger wrote the song for his girlfriend, Sharona Alperin, whose picture appeared on the single's cover.

In 1987, thousands came to Graceland in Memphis to honor Elvis Presley on the tenth anniversary of his death.

In 1997, on the 20th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death, over 30,000 fans descended on Memphis, Tennessee for a 10 minute mourning, circling his grave. A poll found that almost a third of the fans were keeping an eye out for him in the crowd

In 2002, the Rolling Stones make a surprise appearance at a club in Toronto prior to their Licks tour.

birthdays today, among others include Tim Farris (INXS) (54), Madonna (53), Emily Robison (Dixie Chicks) (39), Gary Loizzo (American Breed) (66) and Barry Hay (Golden Earring) (63)

Resurgence of vinyl records hits Gainesville

Thomas Nassiff

Andrew Schaer isn't comfortable with how young people are going about compiling their music libraries.

He doesn't appreciate the growing population of young adults who are satisfied with listening to music on their laptops or cheap headphones. In his opinion, music deserves better treatment than that.

In his store, right next to his cash register, Schaer has a small sign. There's a picture of an iPod, and the striking, bold font underneath reads, "This IS NOT a music collection." To the right of the iPod, there is a picture of a few bookcases crammed from top to bottom with vinyl records.

The striking, bold font next to that picture reads, "This IS a music collection."

interesting interview with a iconic musician:

Glen Campbell on music, memories and saying goodbye to life on the road

Six months ago, the one-time Beach Boys frontman and country singer par excellence was told he had Alzheimer’s. Now he talks exclusively about his music and his memories.

By Craig McLean

In November 2003, Glen Campbell drove his BMW into another car in Phoenix, Arizona. He then left the scene of the incident and was later picked up at home by Arizona police. Smelling alcohol on his breath, they arrested him and took him to Maricopa County jail. There, Campbell kneed a sergeant in the thigh, which led to an additional charge of aggravated assault on a police officer. He was convicted of extreme DUI (driving under the influence) and sentenced to 10 days in prison; his police mugshot was made public and became a widely viewed internet sensation.

Record Industry Braces for Artists’ Battles Over Song Rights

By LARRY ROHTER

Since their release in 1978, hit albums like Bruce Springsteen’s “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” Billy Joel’s “52nd Street,” the Doobie Brothers’ “Minute by Minute,” Kenny Rogers’s “Gambler” and Funkadelic’s “One Nation Under a Groove” have generated tens of millions of dollars for record companies. But thanks to a little-noted provision in United States copyright law, those artists — and thousands more — now have the right to reclaim ownership of their recordings, potentially leaving the labels out in the cold

10 Things You Didn’t Know About David Crosby

by: Matt Wardlaw

Legendary singer/songwriter David Crosby, an iconic troubadour of American music, who (somewhat amazingly) turns 70 on Aug. 14, has been sharing his songs via a varied configuration of bands for decades now. Of course he's most famous for his work with Crosby, Stills & Nash (and sometimes Young). As part of that legendary collective, Crosby helped define an era while demonstrating how to compose memorable, timeless music.

Grammy Winner, Everlast to Release New Album, “Songs of the Ungrateful Living,” on October 18th, 2011 via Artist’s Own Label Martyr Inc. Records, in Partnership with EMI

Grammy winner, Everlast to release new album, “Songs of the Ungrateful Living,” on October 18th. Album to be released on artist’s own label Martyr Inc. records, in partnership with EMI Music. First single, “I Get By,” set to impact modern rock radio on August 23rd.

Erik “EVERLAST” Schrody is set to release his first album in three years, “Songs of the Ungrateful Living” on October 18th on his own Martyr Inc. Records. This will be the first release on the label, in partnership with EMI Music. Full of Schrody’s trademark gritty style, the album is awash in the beats and blues that have made EVERLAST a Grammy winner, a chart-topper, an Emmy nominee and a musical trailblazer for multiple generations.

The first single, “I Get By,” set to impact Modern Rock radio on August 23rd is an anthem for our troubled times. Sings EVERLAST, “I voted for change and it’s kind of strange that’s all I’ve got in my pocket.” EVERLAST is not afraid to address the issues facing the world today, both political and personal. “Little Miss America” looks at the state of fame, reality TV and our country. “Little Miss America,” he asks, “where’d you get that scar?” On “Long Time” the big issues become more personal, documenting the struggles that are familiar to everyone.

"The music industry has changed tremendously over the years," explains EVERLAST. “This album is particularly important to me to help express the current chaotic human condition we’re all dealing with. With this in mind I made the decision to take control of the situation and start my own label. ‘Songs of the Ungrateful Living’ is the first album on Martyr Inc. Records in partnership with EMI. Musically and lyrically, this album reflects the diverse musical explorations and personal ebb and flow that I have experienced in recent years."

“We couldn’t be more excited to be in business with EVERLAST. His music has been an anthem for millions of fans and ‘Songs of the Ungrateful Living,’ is sure not to disappoint,” remarked Michael Harris EVP/General Manager EMI Global Label Services/Caroline Distribution.

Although there have been albums in between, “Songs for the Ungrateful” is the spiritual follow-up to his 1998 breakthrough, the multi-platinum Whitey Ford Sings the Blues, an eclectic mix of rock, blues, country, pop and hip-hop, which topped the Billboard charts and sold more than 3 million copies on the strength of its crossover hit, “What It’s Like.”

In 2000 Everlast penned the song “Put Your Lights On” won a Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal Grammy for his collaboration with Carlos Santana, “Put Your Lights On.” More recently, Everlast was recruited by Nancy Miller, creator and executive producer for the TNT series “Saving Grace,” starring Holly Hunter, to create the show’s theme song, for which EVERLAST was nominated for an EMMY. EVERLAST is also a member of the rap super group La Coka Nostra who have received major accolades and recognition as one of today’s hottest hip hop groups. Among the many artists with whom he’s collaborated are Willie Nelson, Snoop Dog, Madonna, Cypress Hill, Cee-Lo, Billy Gibbons, Swollen Members, Dilated Peoples, Run DMC, Kurupt, Limp Bizkit, X-Ecutioners, , Prince Paul, Daz Dillinger and KRS-One.

The Valley Stream, LI-born rapper emerged as a member of Ice-T’s Rhyme Syndicate for his 1990 solo album, Forever Everlasting, then formed the pioneering rap group House of Pain with friends DJ Lethal and Danny Boy. Signed to legendary dance and hip-hop label Tommy Boy Records, the group went multi-platinum with their self-titled 1992 debut which produced the legendary rap classic “Jump Around.”

Masterworks Broadway Celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the Classic Broadway Musical Godspell

NEWLY REMASTERED 2-CD SET OF THE ORIGINAL CAST RECORDING PLUS ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK AVAILABLE SEPTEMBER 6

First ever Broadway revival begins performances in October

MASTERWORKS BROADWAY proudly announces the release of Godspell - The 40th Anniversary Celebration, a two-disc set that will be available physically and digitally on September 6, 2011. The newly remastered collection includes both the original off-Broadway cast recording from 1971 and the motion picture soundtrack from 1973. Featuring new liner notes by composer Stephen Schwartz, Godspell - The 40th Anniversary Celebration comes out in advance of the first ever Broadway revival, which begins performances at New York City's Circle in the Square Theatre in October.

The score by Stephen Schwartz, the Grammy® and Academy Award®-winning composer of Wicked and Pippin, includes the hit "Day By Day," which reached #13 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart in the summer of 1972. "The popularity of the record helped make the show a bigger hit," recalls Schwartz in his liner notes, "and at one point there were ten companies playing simultaneously around the United States, plus other productions in London, Paris, Australia, South Africa, Germany, etc…Today it is hard to believe that forty years have gone by since the original production." New Godspell interview and performance videos featuring Stephen Schwartz will be available for viewing exclusively on MasterworksBroadway.com.

The 2-disc set also includes the soundtrack from the 1973 movie, which was filmed and set in New York City, and memorably featured the musical number "All For the Best" performed on the top of the as-yet-to-be-completed World Trade Center. Godspell introduced a young Victor Garber (Sweeney Todd on Broadway and four-time Emmy® nominee for TV's Alias) as Jesus and features the joyous song "Beautiful City" which was newly written for the film.

Although this immensely successful musical based on the Gospel of St. Matthew now needs little introduction, when Godspell was first produced in 1971, it broke new ground in its treatment of the historical Jesus. It relates the last days of Jesus using dramatized versions of several parables, but quickly becomes something more – a religious experience and a joyous celebration of the family of man.

Godspell opened at the Cherry Lane Theatre on May 17, 1971 and then moved to the larger Promenade Theater in August 1971, where it became one of the longest-running off-Broadway musicals of all time. Godspell moved to Broadway in June 1976 and was Tony®-nominated for its score before ending its run in September 1977, with a combined total of more than 2,600 performances. This beloved musical has become a staple of the theatrical repertoire in schools, churches, and community and professional theatres across the globe and is one of the most licensed titles annually.

For the First Time on DVD The Ed Sullivan Show Motown Collections

The relationship between Berry Gordy's Motown label and The Ed Sullivan Show made music and television history. Soon after the Supremes' debut on Sullivan (December 1964), it was clear that showcasing the latest Motown releases on CBS on Sunday nights (35 million viewers was average) was a way to expose the record company's newest hits and boost the show's ratings. Sullivan introduced nearly all the Motown acts including The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Four Tops, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight & The Pips and The Jackson 5. From Hitsville U.S.A. in Detroit by way of The Ed Sullivan Show, these classic performances brought the "Motown Sound" to living rooms across America.

Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) and SOFA Entertainment present Motown Gold from The Ed Sullivan Show (2 DVDs), and, in celebration of The Temptations and Supremes 50th Anniversary, The Best of The Temptations on The Ed Sullivan Show (1 DVD) and The Best of The Supremes on The Ed Sullivan Show (1 DVD). All three collections released on September 13, 2011 are packed with classic Motown performances from The Ed Sullivan Show, taped live between 1964 and 1971, and are fully restored with never before released footage.

Motown performances on Sullivan were followed by a Monday morning sales spike and it was a perfect formula for mutual success. Berry Gordy's dynamic sound aimed to appeal to America's white teenagers and with the Sullivan stage as the entry point for his incredible roster of talent, this show business marriage remained rock solid until the show went off the air. Ed Sullivan and his producer, Bob Precht, were especially proud of the history these two iconic American institutions forged together.

One great Motown group after another was introduced on Sullivan, new releases topped the music charts and Ed's brief chats with the artists all led to a greater acceptance of African-American R&B by white teenagers. This helped Motown to conquer America, and in time, the company became world renown as "The Sound of Young America."

Motown Gold from The Ed Sullivan Show is a 2-DVD (3 Volume) collection with appearances by legendary Motown acts including:

•The Jackson 5 ushering in a new generation of Motown acts with a medley of their No. 1 hits "I Want You Back," "The Love You Save" and "ABC."

•Diana Ross and The Supremes performing their No. 1 hits "Come See About Me," "Someday We'll Be Together" and "Love Child."

•The Temptations doing their No. 1 hits "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" and "I Can't Get Next to You."

•The Four Tops with their No. 1 hit single "Reach Out I'll Be There."

•Martha & the Vandellas singing their timeless classic "Dancing in the Street."

•Marvin Gaye's only Sullivan appearance singing "Take This Heart of Mine."

•Young Stevie Wonder captivating the audience with his No. 1 hit "Fingertips Pt. 2" and his classic "For Once in My Life."

•A never-before-released performance of Smokey Robinson & The Miracles singing a medley of the hits "I Second That Emotion," "If You Can Want" and "Going to a Go-Go."

•And many other great Motown Performances!

Bonus material included in this collection features a special performance by Gladys Knight & The Pips of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" at the Brooke Army Medical Center in Houston, Texas, and the Four Tops singing ''Put A Little Love in Your Heart" at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Andrew and Josh Solt, whose company, SOFA Entertainment, owns "The Ed Sullivan Show" library made the following statement about the Motown collection. "We are so pleased that after working on this project for many years, the definitive Motown on Ed Sullivan collection is now available to millions of fans who love the Motown sound. The Sullivan show featured more Motown artists than any other television show and now these timeless live performances can finally be enjoyed by fans of what many believe is the greatest music of the 60's. A considerable amount of work has gone into making sure the sound and picture quality on the discs is optimal. We hope people will be dancing in the streets and in their living rooms when they push play on the Motown on Ed Sullivan DVD collection."

The Best of The Supremes on The Ed Sullivan Show

The Supremes rose from poverty to become Motown's most consistent hit-maker and the most popular female group of the 60's. Along with the charmed circle of Motown singers, writers, producers and players, they rewrote the book on pop music, sang their way into the hearts of millions and made a lasting impression that continues to this day.

With a total of sixteen appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Best Of The Supremes collects some of the group's greatest performances. Included in this DVD is their very first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in December 1964, showcasing their No. 1 hit "Come See About Me." Other timeless performances featured are "You Can't Hurry Love," "My World is Empty Without You," "Baby Love," "Stop! In The Name of Love" and "The Happening." And, for the first time on DVD, this collection includes a full version of "Up the Ladder to the Roof" which is the only appearance by the "New Supremes" after Diana Ross went on to pursue a solo career.

This collection of performances truly showcases why The Supremes are one of Motown's biggest and most beloved acts.

The Best of The Temptations on The Ed Sullivan Show

The Temptations began their musical life in Detroit in the early sixties. With their flashy suits, distinctive harmonies and precise, split-second choreography, they popularized a refined style of performance that made them a household name. For the first time on DVD, you get the best of their Ed Sullivan Show performances. Included in this collection is the group's very first appearance in May 1967, in which they performed a medley of hits including "My Girl" and "(I Know) I'm Losing You." Other songs featured are the group's No. 1 hit "I Can't Get Next to You," a playful version of "You've Made Me So Very Happy," the Top Ten hit "Psychedelic Shack," and the 1969 hit single "Runaway Child, Running Wild" with Dennis Edwards replacing David Ruffin.

Highlights of this collection include:

•The Temptations' special appearance alongside The Supremes with each group performing a medley of the other group's hits, including "Get Ready," "Stop! In The Name Of Love," and "Baby Love."

•DVD debuting performances by The Temptations of "Hello Young Lovers," "Autumn Leaves," and never-before-released medleys of "Girl (Why You Wanna Make Me Blue)," "All I Need," "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "I'll Be There" and "My Sweet Lord."

•The Temptations' last appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1971 in which they performed "Get Ready" and their No. 1 hit "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)." These tender and soulful performances were a fitting farewell to The Ed Sullivan Show.

Today, The Temptations and The Supremes continue to be an essential component of the Motown legacy. The Temptations recent DVD release, Get Ready: Definitive Performances 1965-1972, is currently double platinum, and their recent ICON CD has already sold more than 100,000 copies. The Supremes DVD release, Reflections - Definitive Performances 1964-1969 is also now double platinum. Fifty years later, original fans as well as new fans confirm with steady sales that these performers' true artistry and talent is timeless.

and music history for the today, August 15th:

In 1939, 'The Wizard of Oz' premiered in Hollywood, CA. Judy Garland became famous for the movie's song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."

In 1955, Elvis Presley attended a meeting in Memphis with his manager Bob Neal, Colonel Tom Parker and Vernon Presley, at which a new contract was signed that names Colonel Parker as "special advisor" with control of virtually every aspect of Elvis' career. Parker was not really a Colonel at all, but a Dutch immigrant named Andreas Cornelius van Kujik, whose honorary title was given to him in 1948 by Governor Jimmie Davis of Louisiana. He was a flamboyant promoter whose pre-Elvis experience included shows called The Great Parker Pony Circus and Tom Parker and His Dancing Turkeys and was a veteran of carnivals, medicine shows and various other entertainment enterprises.

Also in 1955, after a suggestion that RCA bid $20,000 to land Elvis Presley, company executive Mitch Miller replies "no singer is worth that much."

In 1960, Elvis Presley started a five-week run at #1 on the U.S. singles chart with “It's Now or Never.” It also hit #1 in the U.K. The song, which was based on the Italian song, “O Sole Mio,” gave Presley his first post-Army #1 hit. The record would have international sales of over 20 million and become a personal favorite of The King.

In 1964, actor and singer Dean Martin went to #1 on the US singles chart with 'Everybody Loves Somebody', it made No.11 on the UK chart.

In 1965, the Beatles set a new world record for the largest attendance at a pop concert when they played in front of 55,600 fans at Shea Stadium in New York City. Sharing the bill with The Beatles; Brenda Holloway, The King Curtis Band, The Young Rascals and Sounds Incorporated. The Beatles were paid $160,000 for the show, the set list: ‘Twist and Shout’, ‘She's a Woman’, ‘I Feel Fine’, ‘Dizzy Miss Lizzie’, ‘Ticket to Ride’, ‘Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby’, ‘Can't Buy Me Love’, ‘Baby's In Black’, ‘Act Naturally’, ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’, ‘A Hard Day's Night’, ‘Help!’, and ‘I'm Down’. Two of the Rolling Stones were among the audience, Mick Jagger and Keith Richard and later that evening; Bob Dylan visited The Beatles at their hotel.

In 1969, the three-day Woodstock Festival kicked-off on Max Yasgur's 600-acre farm in Bethel, New York. Attended by over 400,000 people, the free event featured Jimi Hendrix, Joe Cocker, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Santana, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band, Canned Heat, Joan Baez, Ten Years After, Sly and the Family Stone, Johnny Winter, Jefferson Airplane, Ravi Shankar, Country Joe and the Fish, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Arlo Guthrie, and Joe Cocker.

In 1981, Diana Ross and Lionel Richie started a nine week run at #1 on the US singles chart with 'Endless Love'

In 1991, Paul Simon played a free concert for nearly a million people in New York City’s Central Park.

In 1992, Jamaican singer-song writer Jackie Edwards died. Edwards worked as a singer, songwriter for Island Records. He wrote both ‘Keep On Running’ and ‘Somebody Help Me’, that became No.1 singles for The Spencer Davis Group as well as releasing his own albums.

In 1992, Boyz II Men started a 13 week run at #1 on the US singles chart with 'End Of The Road' the group's first US #1. Taken from the Eddie Murphy film 'Boomerang', it broke the 36-year-old record held by Elvis for the longest run at #1

In 2002, a memorial to John Lennon was unveiled in the remote Scottish village of Durness where Lennon had spent his holidays from age seven to fifteen. The lyrics from 'In My Life' had been inscribed on three stones.

In 2007, sixteen solo John Lennon albums were made available to download on iTunes for the first time. A deal was approved by the late Beatle's widow Yoko Ono following a lengthy legal battle between the band's label Apple Corps and Apple Inc, which owned Tunes.

In 2007, the Osmond Brothers, joined by siblings Donny, Marie and Jimmy, took the stage for the taping of a 50th anniversary reunion show to be aired on PBS. A meeting of no less than seven singing Osmonds onstage hadn't happened in more than 20 years, although no one could remember the exact date of the last full family concert.

In 2008, record producer Jerry Wexler, who influenced the careers of such legends as Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and Bob Dylan, died at his home in Sarasota, Florida. He was 91. Among Wexler’s production credits are Franklin’s hit “Respect,” Wilson Pickett’s “In the Midnight Hour,” and he helped Bob Dylan win his first Grammy by producing his 1979 album Slow Train Coming. Wexler is also credited with coining the term “rhythm and blues” while writing for Billboard magazine in the late 1940s.

In 2010, Robert Wilson, bassist for The Gap Band, passed away at the age of 53. In a career that started in the late '70s, the group had four Platinum albums and fifteen US Top Ten hits, including four that made it to number one.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

It's Vinyl Record Day - Listen To And Appreciate Your Records!

August 12th is Vinyl Record Day and was launched in 2002 by Gary Freiberg.

Vinyl Record Day raises awareness on the importance of preserving vinyl records that once played such a pivotal role in American pop culture. Vinyl Record Day coincides with an important day in music history; on August 12, 1877, Thomas Edison invented the phonograph.

Vinyl Record Day is about celebrating vinyl records and the public should take notice of this special day. Invite friends and family over for a barbeque, maybe form a block party and play records, think records and talk about records and what they mean to each of us individually and culturally,” explains founder Gary Freiberg.

Working with Gary over the years, I know is fully committed to keeping vinyl alive and is very passionate about the subject.

I'll go one step further, and let you hear from the man himself:

So take time out and enjoy your music on this historic audio medium! (I am pulling out boxes of 45's and having a BBQ! tomorrow!)

HAPPY VINYL RECORD DAY!

With 'Jews on Vinyl' You Can Have Your Kitsch and Eat It, Too

By Rokhl Kafrissen

“Jews on Vinyl,” an unusual museum exhibit focused on the recent Jewish past, has arrived at the Yeshiva University Museum after touring the West Coast for two years. The exhibit is a project of the Reboot Stereophonic non-profit record label, and is based on the 2008 book “And You Shall Know Us by the Trail of Our Vinyl: The Jewish Past as Told by the Records We Have Loved and Lost,” a glossy collection of over 500 vintage record covers collected over 15 years by guest curators (and Stereophonic Reboot founders) Josh Kun and Roger Bennett.

Kiss Are About 'Self-Empowerment,' Not Merchandise 'Schlock' Says Paul Stanley

Kiss have long been famous for their savvy approach to merchandise, with the prime example being the Kiss Kasket, an actual coffin emblazoned with the band's logo and graphics (and now there's even a Kiss cremation urn). So, with all that Kiss-related swag and marketing tie-ins, does guitarist Paul Stanley worry that the band name is branded on too much stuff?

Never.

Former Warrant Vocalist Jani Lane Dies at 47

The Los Angeles Police Department News Release regarding the passing of former WARRANT singer Jani Laneread as follows:

"On August 11, 2011, patrol officers from Topanga station responded to a 9-1-1call of a death investigation in Woodland Hills.

"At around 5:30 p.m., Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics arrived to the 20100 block of Ventura Boulevard, immediately followed by Topanga Area officers. When emergency personnel arrived, the Fire Department pronounced the death of a 47-year-old man, later identified as Jani Lane, the lead singer of the popular rock band WARRANT.

"The cause of death is unknown and the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office is conducting an investigation into Mr. Lane's death."

Warrant posted the following statement regarding the death of their former vocalist Jani Lane yesterday:

"We are deeply saddened to hear the news of Jani's passing. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Jani was a very important part of our lives for a long time. We will always be incredibly proud of the music we created together.

He was a true talent and will be missed by all of us."

Lane penned Warrant's most famous songs including "Cherry Pie," "Heaven" and "Uncle Tom's Cabin." Over the years, Lane and the remaining members of Warrant had a tumultuous relationship. Lane left and rejoined the band several times, most recently reuniting with the original members in 2008. This reunion lasted only a few months and Lane was permanently replaced in Warrant by vocalist Robert Mason. In between his time with Warrant, Lane worked on several solo projects and toured with other 80s metal acts.

Slash: "Just heard about Jani Lane. What a shame. RIP man."

Nikki Sixx (Motley Crue): "I just heard the sad news about Janie Lane. So hard to swallow when people have kids. RIP."

Bret Michaels (Poison): “We'd like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of Jani Lane regarding their loss. Respectfully, Bret and all at MEGI.”

Alice Cooper: "Our thoughts go out to our fallen brother Jani Lane, his family, his friends and his fans."

and in music history for the day, August 12th (and may i add that some truly magical things - and sad things - were done on this date!!!):

As previously mentioned, in 1877, Thomas Edison invented the phonograph and made the first sound recording.

In 1960, Pete Best became the new drummer for The Beetles. (note the early spelling) Their previous drummer, Norman Chapman, had been called into Britain's armed forces after he had replaced Tommy Moore the month before. The band would leave for Hamburg, Germany the next day.

The Beatles' film A Hard Days Night opened in 500 American theaters in 1964.

In 1967, Fleetwood Mac played their first show at the Windsor Jazz and Blues Festival. The band members included Mick Fleetwood, Jeremy Spencer, Peter Green and Bob Brunning. John McVie wouldn't replace Brunning until a month later, which is rather odd, since the band has always maintained that the "Mac" part of their name was taken from "McVie

In 1968, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham played together for the first time when they rehearsed in a small basement room on Gerrard Street just south of London’s Soho district. The first song they played was a version of “Train Kept A-Rollin’.”

Blind Faith made their live debut at Madison Square Garden in New York in 1969.

In 1970, Janis Joplin performed her final concert, at Harvard University.

In 1972, Alice Cooper was at #1 on the U.K. singles chart with “School's Out.”

In 1978, the Commodores started a two-week run at #1 on the US singles chart with “Three Times a Lady.” The track also went to #1 in the U.K., becoming Motown's biggest British selling single. Lionel Richie wrote the song about his love for his wife, mother and grandmother, hence “Once, Twice, Three Times a Lady.”

In 1982, R&B soul singer Joe Tex died of a heart attack at the age of 44. He is most often remembered for his hits "I Gotcha", which made it up to #2 in 1972 and "Skinny Legs And All", #10 in 1967.

In 1985, Kyu Sakamoto was killed in a plane crash, when Japanese Airlines Flight 123 crashed and burned on a thickly wooded mountain about 60 miles northwest of Tokyo. He was 43. Sakamoto had the 1963 US #1 and UK #6 single, “Sukiyaki,” which made him the first Japanese artist to hit the top of the US singles chart.

In 1989, the two-day Moscow Music Peace Festival was held at The Lenin Stadium in Moscow, Russia. Western Acts who appeared included Mötley Crüe, Ozzy Osbourne, Bon Jovi, Skid Row and Scorpions. This was the first time that an audience had been allowed to stand up and dance at a stadium rock concert in the Soviet Union. Previous to this, all concerts had to be seated.

In 1994, Woodstock '94 opened in Saugerties, NY. The opening was on the 25th anniversary of the Woodstock Music and Art Fair.

In 1995, a wake was held for Jerry Garcia in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.

In 1997, MTV debuted the Fleetwood Mac reunion concert. The special was taken from two performances at a Warner Brothers soundstage a few months earlier.

In 2008, John Lennon's killer was denied parole for a fifth time "due to concern for the public safety and welfare." 53 year old Mark David Chapman, who is being held at New York's Attica Correctional Facility, has been in prison for 27 years since pleading guilty to the murder, which he has said he committed to gain attention. Chapman's next appearance before the board was scheduled for August 2010. as I said before many times, let him rot...

In 2010, Richie Hayward, drummer and co-founder of Little Feat passed away at the age of 64 after contracting pneumonia as he battled liver cancer.

celebrating birthdays today (among others) Pat Metheny (57), Mark Knopfler (62)

Indie Distributor Upbeat After Warehouse Fire

Independent music distributor Pias UK stated that they are optimistic that upcoming release dates will not be affected by the Sony warehouse fire. Sony has put a contingency plan into place and is back up and running from a new office with a temporary distributor ready to pack and ship orders over the next week.

Chief executive officer of Pias UK Nick Hartley told Sky News Online: "The focus is to work with the labels to get remanufacturing under way, starting with their the biggest sellers then working our way down, which should take a fair few weeks."

Musicians React to London Riots

by Cameron Matthews

Over the past four days, riots in London have rocked the British capitol with vandalism, fires and violence. Since the start of the troubles, artists have taken to Twitter and Facebook to express their dismay.

"Where the f--- are the Bullingdon boys? What's wrong you c---s? Would you only end your holidays if it were Fortnum & Mason being looted?" Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos asked of his country's leaders, (via NME) while M.I.A. brewed contention with a riot-sympathizing tweet "I'm going down to the riots to hand out tea and mars bars."

Behind the music: How the Pias fire affects labels, artists and record stores

The stock may be insured, but what about labels with cashflow problems or record stores awaiting stock? We talk to them ...

A few days after the Sony DADC warehouse was set on fire during the riots in London, destroying a catastrophic amount of records, the independent music industry is counting the cost. The warehouse held stock to be delivered by independent distributor Pias, and for some labels, artists and retailers the future looks unsure.

Dance label Ninja Tune lost 120,000 records in the fire, including vinyl. "We're hoping our stock was insured, but we don't know at the moment," says the label's CEO, Pete Quick.

LP Interviews: Mightier Than Sword Records

written by Thomas Nassiff

The following is an interview with R.J. Crowder-Schaefer, owner and operator of Mightier Than Sword Records. It’s the first in a monthly series of interviews with Limited Pressing store owners.

In the interview, we talk to R.J. about his stance on preorders, how he normally goes about his label’s business and, of course, MTS’s well-known licensing of the Blink-182 discography. Enjoy!

For starters, let’s get a basic introduction out of the way. Who are you, what company do you run, and what do you do?

Hey, my name is R.J. Crowder-Schaefer, I run a company called Mightier Than Sword Records and I do a bunch of stuff, including A&R, mailorder/customer service, and most of the social media stuff.

Mightier Than Sword has been known for putting out its own releases as well as bringing older records to vinyl. What made you decide to go out and put some older records on vinyl, including some represses?

For the first couple years the label was a hobby for me, and we started licensing new releases to vinyl from labels that were only doing CD and digital.

The small, Old Center office converted into the El Coyote venue for the Topanga Film Festival, came complete with sawdust on the floor. The compact room was chilled, dark and promising, with about 30 seats.

The 3 p.m. Friday screening of “Under The Covers” compellingly captured the professional and personal relationship between two old campaigners from the world of rock and roll album covers, now a vanished art.

Back in the day, photographer Henry Diltz and art director/artist Gary Burden collaborated on album covers for, Crosby, Stills and Nash; Joni Mitchell; The Doors; The Eagles; Jackson Brown; America; and Jimmy Webb, amongst many others.
