DEAR NANCY: Here is just a wee bit more to the Del Shannon-Singing Nun comparison: “Runaway” and “Dominique” were both No. 1 for four weeks.
Also, the two singers are alphabetically consecutive on the list you requested.
For this account, we mostly stick with the official causes of death, as determined by medical examiners and affiliated investigating agencies. As drug overdose cases are rarely categorized as suicide, stars like Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix are excluded, though distinctions between accidental, albeit preventable, drug overdoses and intentional ones can often be blurry.
Alphabetically, with date, cause of death, and age, they are:
Johnny Ace: December 25, 1954 of a single shot to the head (25). Included because some reports attribute his death to Russian Roulette, labeling it suicide, but all first-hand witnesses deny that account. They say he put a pistol at his head and pulled the trigger, attempting only to prove it was not loaded. Unthinkable stupidity? Absolutely, but it should not be classified as suicide. The same applies to Chicago's Terry Kath (1978). Johnny Ace had the No. 1 R&B smash, “Pledging My Love,” plus seven other Top 10 hits.
Tommy Boyce: November 23, 1994 of a self-inflicted gunshot (55). With partner, Bobby Hart, Boyce wrote over 300 songs, many being hits for Boyce & Hart (“I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight,” etc.) as well as the Monkees (“Last Train to Clarksville,” etc.).
Roy Buchanan: August 14, 1988. While incarcerated over a domestic dispute, Roy crafted a noose from his shirt and hung himself in his cell (48). Often called the best unknown guitarist in the world, Buchanan's virtuosity is heard on about 30 albums.
Kurt Cobain: April 5, 1994 of a self-inflicted shotgun blast to the head (27). Lead singer-guitarist of Nirvana, who had eight Gold albums from 1991 to 2002. Cobain is a marquee member of the Forever 27 Club, an uncanny abundance of singers and musicians whose life ended at age 27 (more on that below).
Danny Gatton: October 4, 1994 of a self-inflicted gunshot (49). Another one of rock's great guitarists. Danny is featured on countless hit records.
Dickie Goodman: November 6, 1989 of a self-inflicted shot from a Taurus .38 Special. Known as the King of Novelty, his groundbreaking “The Flying Saucer” (1956), and later “Mr. Jaws,” sold in the millions.
Pete Ham: April 24, 1975. Hanged himself in his garage. Leader of the Iveys, later known as Badfinger. Their top hits, including “Come and Get It”; “No Matter What”; “Day After Day”; and “Baby Blue,” were all on Apple, the Beatles' label.
Donny Hathaway: January 13, 1979. Jumped to his death from the 15th floor of New York's Essex House Hotel (33). Best known for his million-selling duets with Roberta Flack, “Where Is the Love” and “The Closer I Get to You.”
Phil Ochs: April 9, 1976. Yet another to die at the end of their own hangman's noose (35). Singer, prolific songwriter, political activist, and a key figure in the 1960s folk scene.
Danny Rapp: April 5, 1983 of a self-inflicted gunshot (41). Leader of Danny and the Juniors, whose “At the Hop” and “Rock and Roll Is Here to Stay” are rock era anthems.
Del Shannon: February 8, 1990 of a self-inflicted shot from his .22 caliber rifle (55). After the mega-hit “Runaway,” Shannon added eight more Top 40 hits to his Hall of Fame resume.
The Singing Nun (Jeanne-Paule Marie Deckers): March 31, 1985. Deckers (51) and her domestic partner, Annie Pecher, both intentionally overdosed on alcohol and barbiturates. Wanting to be together forever, they are buried side-by-side in Warve, Belgium.
Ray Smith: November 29, 1979 of a self-inflicted gunshot (45). Remembered for his rockabilly tunes for Sun Records (e.g., “Right Behind You Baby”) and the million-selling “Rockin' Little Angel.”
Gary Stewart: December 16, 2003 of a self-inflicted gunshot (59) — just 20 days after the death of Mary Lou, his wife of 43 years. On the C&W charts with 30 titles, including the No. 1 “She's Actin' Single.”
Mel Street: October 21, 1978 of a self-inflicted gunshot, on his 45th birthday. Had 23 C&W charted records, the biggest being “Borrowed Angel” and “Lovin' on Back Streets.”
Wendy O. Williams: April 6, 1998 of a self-inflicted gunshot (48), after two failed attempts (1993, 1997). Lead singer of the punk-rock group, the Plasmatics.
Faron Young: December 10, 1996 of a self-inflicted shot from a .38 pistol (64). Made the C&W charts with 89 titles, including “Hello Walls” and four other No. 1 hits. One of the 10 Top C&W acts of the 1960s. Johnny Ace (25) is the youngest and Faron Young (64) is the oldest on our list.

Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, Adele help vinyl album sales hit six-year high
Strong sales of Radiohead, Adele and Arctic Monkeys’ recent albums have helped to see vinyl LPs record their best sales figures for six years in the United Kingdom. In fact, according to the UK’s Official Charts Company, sales of vinyl albums in 2011 have already outsold the total for the whole of 2010, with over 240,000 LPs sold, compared to 234,000 in 2010. Radiohead’s The King of Limbs has sold more than 20,000 copies alone, more than 10 times what Adele's 21 has sold, the second best-selling album on vinyl of 2010. Other artists enjoying strong vinyl sales are PJ Harvey, Beady Eye and Bon Iver.
Meanwhile in the US, Nielsen SoundScan indicates that vinyl records, with almost three million sold, was the fastest growing music format in 2010. By June 2011 the number of vinyl albums sold was 40 percent greater than the same period last year.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers to Release Limited Edition Vinyl-Only Live Album Including Songs From Their 2010 Mojo Tour
Kiss My Amps (Live) Will Be Available at Indie Record Stores Only on November 25th as Part of the "Back To Black" Friday Record Store Day Event
BURBANK, CA, Oct 19, 2011 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers will support the coalition of independent record stores' November 25th Back To Black Friday Record Store Day event with a limited edition vinyl-only release of live tracks from their Grammy Award-nominated album Mojo.
Kiss My Amps (Live) features 6 tracks from Mojo recorded during the 2010 Mojo Tour and also includes "Sweet William," a b-side recorded live during the 2008 Tour and referred to at the time by Rolling Stone as their "new favorite Petty song."

Sony Classical to Release the Emerson String Quartet's Debut Album on the Label
Their first recording of Mozart quartets in 20 years

Mozart's three last string quartets, written in 1789 and 1790 after a visit to the royal court in Berlin, were commissioned by the King of Prussia. The great Etta James has been a musical force and a major hit-maker since the '50s earning numerous accolades including six Grammy Awards®, among them the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, a Best Jazz Vocal Performance and two Hall of Fame Awards. In 1993, James was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2001 she was inducted by both the Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame and the Rockabilly Hall Of Fame. She also is immortalized in Hollywood with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Throughout her career, James created a remarkably deep and diverse catalog of R&B, blues, soul, pop and jazz recordings. James crossed all musical genres and styles and has been cited as a major influence by a wide range of singers from Janis Joplin to Irma Thomas to Christina Aguilera and Adele.

In 1896, Frank Seaman opened the National Gramophone Company.
In 1958, Brenda Lee recorded "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree". The song will be released as a single but will fail to chart in either 1958 or 1959. When it was re-released in 1960, it rose to #14 and has since become a Christmas standard, being ranked at #4 in the Top 10 All Time Christmas Songs.
In 1961, the then unknown Beatles and Gerry & the Pacemakers joined together for a one-time show in Litherland, England, billing themselves as the Beatmakers.
In 1966, the Yardbirds arrive in New York for their first US tour with Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page on lead guitars. After two dates of the tour, Beck developed acute tonsillitis and quit the group. He would go on to form The Jeff Beck Group, that gave Rod Stewart his first major exposure.
In 1967, "I Second That Emotion" by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles was released by Tamla-Motown. The song peaked for three weeks in the United States at #4 (behind The Beatles "Hello Goodbye" at #3) on the Billboard pop singles chart in December 1967. The song finds lead singer Smokey Robinson courting a girl who, weary of the game of love, prefers to string her men along and not get romantically involved. Robinson "wants no part" in such a relationship, but promises that if the girl changes her mind, he'll be around ("If you feel like lovin' me/if you've got the notion/I second that emotion.")
The cut was a million-selling hit for The Miracles, their sixth overall. The Temptations original version was also a top 30 hit in the UK in 1967, reaching #27, while the cover version by Diana Ross & the Supremes and The Temptations peaked at #19.
Also in 1967, under the working title "Hello Hello", the Beatles recorded the backing track on October 2, 1967, and added vocals and a guitar overdub on the 19th. After further overdubs of bass guitar and viola, recording was completed on the November 2nd, and mixing on the 6th.
In 1967, Jose Feliciano records his version of "Light My Fire", which will reach #3 in the US in 1968.
In 1968, 18 year-old Peter Frampton meets Steve Marriott at a Small Faces show in London. After striking up a friendship, the two start planning a new group which will emerge as Humble Pie next April.
In 1970, the film Ned Kelly, starring Mick Jagger in the lead role, is released and the critics wasted no time in telling Mick he should stick to singing. One reviewer wrote: "He looks about as lethal as last week's lettuce." Predictably, the movie bombed at the box office.
In 1974, Billy Preston went to the top of the US singles chart with "Nothing From Nothing", the singer's second and final number one.
Also in 1974, Bachman-Turner Overdrive had the #1 album in the US with 'Not Fragile.' A single from the LP, "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet," also topped the American charts.
In 1985, a group called a-ha became the first Norwegian band to top the Billboard Hot 100 when "Take on Me" went to number one. The song would reach number two in the UK in November.
In 1987, in a clear example of just how far music had sunk, an American Rock critic calls Public Enemy's aptly titled Rap effort "Bring The Noise" as "merely the greatest piece of Rock and Roll released in 1987." The single is made up of melodyless rapping over sampled tracks by James Brown, Funkadelic, Marva Whitney, The Beastie Boys and others. For a record given such high praise, it failed to crack the US Top 40 and only reached #56 on the Billboard Hot R&B / Hip-Hop chart.
In 1991, Oasis played their first show with Noel Gallagher in the group in Manchester, England.
In 1994, during a Pink Floyd show at London's Earls Court a section of seating collapsed, over 1,000 fans attending the sold-out show escaped any serious injury.
In 1997, Glen Buxton, the original lead guitarist for Alice Cooper, died of natural causes at the age of 49.

Both albums, each with bonus content and special features that were curated from the band's archives by founding member Billy Corgan, have been painstakingly remastered for the first time from the original master tapes by Bob Ludwig. *See all track listings below.
With the full support and guidance from THE SMASHING PUMPKINS--who've created one of the most acclaimed bodies of work in musical history, selling over 30 million albums--EMI's global catalog reissue campaign will last through 2013; it will encompass all the band's albums and B-sides from 1991-2000, with other release dates to be announced. The pivotal group's many hits defined the alternative music era and continue to resonate on modern rock radio, influencing a whole new generation. Gish highlights include "I Am One," "Siva" and "Rhinoceros," while Siamese Dream features "Cherub Rock," "Today" and "Disarm." Both groundbreaking albums were produced by Butch Vig and Billy Corgan.
As THE SMASHING PUMPKINS get the fully remastered treatment via these reissues, the band is excited to be moving forward by creating new music. After touring America and Europe this fall--the trek launched October 5 in Los Angeles and wraps December 8 in Lisbon--they will release OCEANIA, "an album within an album," as part of their in-progress 44-song work TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE. For the GISH and SIAMESE DREAM liner notes, Billy Corgan was interviewed by journalist/author David Wild. Corgan reflects on why these albums were hard-won triumphs for the band and discusses the origins of the songs. In the SIAMESE DREAM liner notes, Corgan says: "We start the album out with 'Cherub Rock' which is basically my big F.U. to the indie world. If you read the lyrics, that was basically me railing against the hipper than thou New York indie mentality."

Universal Music Enterprises to Release One-Time Vinyl Pressings of All 8 of ABBA's Original Studio Albums October 18, 2011
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- It's hard to imagine how different today's music charts might look without ABBA. From the moment they swept to glory at Eurovision in 1974, the Swedish pop group has been, and continues to be, a major influence on musicians around the world, and remains one of the most successful acts of all time.
To date, ABBA has sold over 370 million albums around the world with their "Gold" greatest hits collection selling well over 28 million copies alone. The musical Mamma Mia has gone on to be the world's No. 1 show with more productions playing simultaneously around the globe than any other musical. From their first hit single "Waterloo" in 1974, the phenomenon continues as new generations continue to discover the music of ABBA.
With the current resurgence in vinyl sales, on October 18, 2011, Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) will be releasing a limited run of all the studio albums in ABBA's catalog through its successful "Back To Black" vinyl campaign. Titles include Ring Ring, Waterloo, ABBA, Arrival, ABBA – The Album, Voulez-Vous, Super Trouper and The Visitors. Each release will also include a digital voucher for an MP3 version of the release.
Ring Ring is the 1973 debut studio album by ABBA featuring Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Agnetha Faltskog and Frida "Anni-Frid" Lyngstad. Ring Ring originally was only available in Scandinavia and a limited number of other countries, only later to be made available in the U.S. The album features the upbeat "Rock 'N' Roll Band," the infectious "I Am Just A Girl" and title track "Ring Ring," which gives a glimpse of what would become the ABBA sound. This re-release uses artwork with the name "ABBA," although at the time of its original release the name ABBA had not yet been coined.
Waterloo is ABBA's second studio album originally released in the U.S. in 1974, marking their American debut. The album features a wide variety of musical styles including reggae, folk-rock and rock. It includes the hit title track "Waterloo," which went to No. 6 on the U.S. charts, and their top 50 hit single "Honey, Honey." Waterloo brings the group closer to that more familiar ABBA hit-making formula and illustrates the group's progression as they begin to hone their sound, setting the stage to become a global phenomenon.
ABBA, the eponymously titled third studio album, was released in 1975 and was the album that made ABBA superstars worldwide. On its release, ABBA hit the Billboard 200 and features their megahit singles "S.O.S," "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" and "Mamma Mia," plus ambitious tracks such as "Intermezzo No. 1" that showcase Andersson and Ulvaeus' classical leanings while demonstrating their abilities as proficient songwriters.
Arrival, the aptly titled fourth studio album by ABBA, was released in 1976, hit the top 20 on the U.S. album chart and features their No. 1 smash hits "Fernando" and "Dancing Queen," the latter becoming one of ABBA's signature songs. Also included is their top 10 hit "Knowing Me, Knowing You" and their top 20 hit "Money, Money, Money."
ABBA - The Album was released in 1977 in conjunction with ABBA: The Movie, which features several of its songs and reached top 20 on the album charts. It sold a million copies in its first six months and includes their smash hit singles "Take a Chance on Me" and "The Name of the Game." The Album also features songs from a "mini-musical" called Girl with the Golden Hair that Andersson and Ulvaeus wrote for their concerts and intended to be used in a dramatically coherent storytelling context.
Voulez-Vous is ABBA's 1979 hit album, reaching top 20 on the Billboard album chart and featuring the hits "Does Your Mother Know"—which hit top 20 in the U.S.—"Chiquitita," "Angeleyes" and the title track, "Voulez-Vous."
Super Trouper was released in 1980 and was yet another worldwide success, landing in the top 20 in the U.S. The album reflected a change in style with ABBA returning to the pop-rock sound of their earlier albums. It spawned the global hits "The Winner Takes It All," which reached No. 1 on the U.S. charts, "On and On and On," "Lay Your Love On Me" and the title track, "Super Trouper."
The Visitors is the eighth and final studio album by ABBA, released in 1981. With The Visitors, ABBA took several steps away from lighter pop music and the album is often regarded as a more complex and mature effort. The album reached the top 40 in the U.S. and features two top 10 hits, "The Visitors" and "When All Is Said and Done," and the top 50-charting "One Of Us."

A new spin on old records

New College has a vinyl collection of about 3,000 albums. / CW | Megan Smith They may hang out in the basement, but that doesn’t mean the New College Listening Library Syndicate doesn’t know how to raise the roof.
“We’re starting off small,” said Matt Hussong, a New College junior and member of the club. “You could even say below basement level, but we’ve got big plans to get this thing off the ground.”
Hussong’s basement analogy serves just as effectively as a description of the group’s physical location as it does a metaphor for the club’s newness to the campus organization scene. Every Friday afternoon from 3 to 5, the NCLLS meets in Lloyd Room 001, a cozy storage closet in the building’s basement, to listen to their collection of approximately 3,000 vinyl records.
“We’ve got a whole lot of records, so we just come and put them on and chill out,” Hussong said. “This is hangout time.”
Ben Folds loves his fans, and if they needed any proof, they now have it in the form of his new release, The Best Imitation of Myself: A Retrospective. Not content just putting together a simple “best-of” album, Folds throws nearly four hours worth of material at his fans, including music from all stages of his career, most of it previously unreleased. It’s the kind of release most musicians promise but never get around to putting together and, though there’s a lot here, quantity never trumps quality.
In 1956, 21 year-old Elvis Presley pulls into a Memphis gas station where he starts to attract a crowd of autograph seekers. After repeatedly asking Elvis to move on so he can resume normal business, station manager Edd Hopper slaps Presley on the head and finds himself on the receiving end of a punch in the eye from Elvis. Station employee Aubrey Brown tries to help his boss, but is no match for Presley. After police are called, Hopper and Brown are charged with assault and are eventually fined $25 and $15 respectively.
In 1957, Paul McCartney made his first appearance with The Quarry Men at New Clubmoor Hall, Norris Green, Liverpool. The line-up for The Quarry Men was John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Eric Griffiths, Colin Hanton, and Len Garry. Paul played John some songs that he has composed which Lennon contributes, marking the birth of the Lennon & McCartney songwriting partnership.
In 1959, the evils of Rock 'n' Roll were front page news again when 75 teenagers were arrested at a concert in Kansas City after a drunken brawl broke out at the Municipal Auditorium.
The Animals began their first US tour in 1964.
In 1966, the Jimi Hendrix Experience played their first gig as a band supporting French pop star Johnny Hallyday at the Paris Olympia in France.
'How I Won the War,' starring John Lennon, premiered in London in 1967.
In 1967, The Bee Gees were at #1 on the UK singles chart with “Massachusetts,” the group's first of five UK #1's. Engelbert Humperdink was at #2 with “The Last Waltz” and Traffic were at #3 with “Hole in My Shoe.”
In 1968, John and Yoko were taken to Paddington Green police station and charged with obstruction, after cannabis was discovered at the apartment they were staying in. Lennon pleaded guilty the following month and was fined £150.
In 1969, at a Rock 'n' Roll revival concert at New York's Madison Square Garden, Bill Haley is given an eight minute standing ovation.
The Jackson 5 made their U.S. television debut on ABC-TV's "Hollywood Place." in 1969.
In 1974, Mary Woodson, the ex-girlfriend of Al Green, poured a boiling pot of grits on the singer and then commits suicide.
In 1975, Simon and Garfunkel reunited on "Saturday Night Live."
Also in 1975, Dickie Goodman had the best selling single in the US with the novelty tune, "Mr. Jaws", which mixed his rapid-fire mock interviews with answers that were snipped from contemporary hit singles. Goodman first entered the US charts in 1956 when he and his partner Bill Buchanan used a similar format on a record called "The Flying Saucer".
Huey Lewis and the News went to #1 on the US album chart in 1986 with 'Fore!'

In 1989, Axl Rose announced he was quitting Guns N' Roses to the crowd at the Los Angeles Colisseum.
In 2002, after a 15 year court battle, New York State's highest court ruled that the Ronettes, did not have the right to share the money earned by their producer Phil Spector through the use of the group's songs in movies, television and advertising. Citing a 1963 contract signed by the group, the court also substantially reduced the amount they stood to gain from royalties on sales of records and compact discs.
In 2005, an image of a naked John Lennon, taken on the last day of his life, was named the top US magazine cover of the past 40 years. The Rolling Stone front cover, taken by Annie Leibovitz and showing Lennon curled around Yoko Ono, was picked by editors, artists and designers.
In 2009, a clump of hair trimmed from Elvis Presley's head when he joined the US Army in March, 1958, sold for $15,000 at the Leslie Hindman auction house in Chicago. Also among the 200 Elvis-related items up for bid was one of Presley's shirts which went for $52,000.
