and in music history for march 6th:

Born on this day 1893, Memphis blues artist Walter ‘Furry’ Lewis. He was the first guitarist to play with a bottleneck. He lost a leg in a railroad accident and once supported The Rolling Stones. Joni Mitchell wrote the song ‘Furry Sings The Blues’ after him. Lewis died on September 14th 1981, aged 88.

In 1955, Tennessee Ernie Ford topped the UK singles chart with what music historians believe is the first Country tune to do so, "Give Me Your Word".

In 1957, the Diamonds become one of the first Canadian artists to have success in the United States when their hit "Little Darlin" reaches #2 on the Billboard Pop chart and #3 on the R&B chart.

In 1958, the Everly Brothers record another Boudleaux Bryant tune, "All I Have To Do Is Dream", which will become their second US number one hit, after "Wake Up Little Susie". It will also top the UK chart.  It had been recorded in just two takes on March 6, 1958 and featured Chet Atkins on guitar. It is the only single to be at #1 on all of Billboard's singles charts simultaneously, on June 2, 1958. The song is ranked No. 141 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

In 1959, the Drifters recorded "There Goes My Baby."

In 1964, Elvis Presley's movie 'Kissin' Cousins' premiered.

In 1965, the Temptations went to #1 on the US singles chart with the Smokey Robinson penned "My Girl", making the group the first male act to have a chart topper for Motown Records. The single reached #43 in the UK.

In 1966, the Rolling Stones started recording sessions for their tenth UK single "Paint It Black" at RCA studios in Hollywood.

In 1967, the Beatles recorded sound effects onto the song 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' at Abbey Road studios in London. The beginning audience murmurs and sounds of a band preparing for a performance are added, along with screams from a tape of the Beatles in concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

In 1970, the Beatles released "Let It Be" in the UK. (single)

In 1973, John Lennon's visa extension is cancelled by the New York Office of the US Immigration Department, just five days after it was granted.

Also in 1973, an attempt to bring Elvis Presley to the UK for shows at London's Earl's Court failed when promoters were told that Elvis had US tour and filming commitments. The real reason was that Elvis' manager, Colonel Tom Parker, was an illegal US immigrant and would not leave the country for fear he would not be allowed back in.

In 1975, the Average White Band, a Scottish group playing Funk music, are awarded a Gold record for the instrumental "Pick Up the Pieces", which was #1 on the Cash Box Best Sellers chart this week.

Also in 1975, Led Zeppelin is awarded a Gold record for the double disc album 'Physical Graffiti.' The LP would eventually be certified as 16 times Platinum for sales of over 8 million copies.

In 1976, after placing 28 songs in the Top 40 of Billboard's Pop chart, The Miracles make the list for the last time when "Love Machine" went to the top. Their run included seven Top 10 hits and two number ones. "Love Machine" made it to #3 in the UK.

In 1976, EMI Records re-released all 22 British Beatles singles. In addition "Yesterday" was released for the first time on 45 in the UK.

In 1982, Billboard Magazine tells us that Dick Clark has donated the podium he stood behind on the original American Bandstand to the national museum at the Smithsonian.

In 1982, the Go-Go's started a six-week run at #1 on the US album chart with 'Beauty And The Beat.' In 2003, the album was ranked number 413 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

In 1993, Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle went to #1 on the US singles chart with "A Whole New World' (Aladdin's Theme)." The single ended Whitney Houston's 14-week run at the top of the charts.

In 1999, Monica had the US #1 single with "Angel Of Mine," Britney Spears held the UK #1 position with "...Baby One More Time."

In 2000, Eric Clapton was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the third time, after receiving previous honors as a member of The Yardbirds and Cream.

In 2001, Led Zeppelin was named as "the most bootlegged band" when 422 illegal albums were counted. The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and The Beatles were next in line with over 350 unauthorized titles available.

Also in 2001, Mike "Smitty" Smith, the original drummer for Paul Revere and the Raiders died of natural causes at his home in Hawaii at the age of 58.

In 2007, according to Dr. Bill Bass, a forensic anthropologist hired by the son of J.P. Richardson, The Big Bopper suffered massive fractures and likely died immediately in the 1959 plane crash that also killed Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. Jay Richardson had hired Dr. Bass of the University of Tennessee to look into rumors that a gun may have been fired on board the plane and that the Big Bopper might have survived the crash and died while trying to get help. Dr. Bass' report says that those rumors are groundless. "There was no indication of foul play. [He] died immediately. He didn't crawl away." Jay Richardson was pleased with the findings, saying "I was hoping to put the rumors to rest."

In 2010, Mark Linkous, frontman with band Sparklehorse committed suicide by shooting himself in the heart outside a friend's house in Knoxville, Tennessee. In 1996 Linkous "died" for two minutes after ingesting a mix of Valium and antidepressants while supporting Radiohead on tour in the UK. He recovered, but the incident left him paralysed, after lying unconscious for 14 hours, with circulation to his legs cut off. He suffered a heart attack when doctors tried to straighten the limbs, and he had surgery seven times to save his legs.

birthdays today include (among many others): Jerry Naylor (Crickets) (73), (Marilyn Manson) (48), Mary Wilson (Supremes) (68), Hugh Grundy (Zombies) (67) and David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) (66)

One man's research uncovers gems in Yemen's music history

Christopher Lord

In markets and antique shops across Yemen's capital city of Sanaa, a vast vinyl heritage has been gathering dust in cardboard boxes for the past 50 years.

Songs by a generation of Yemeni singers, with lyrics about unrequited love and inner turmoil, were impressed on to records after a rush of ad hoc recordings and studio sessions across the country throughout the 1960s.

Chris Menist is an avid collector and rescuer of old records, and spent two months in 2011 scouring markets in Sanaa and Aden for any bit of vintage vinyl he could lay his hands on. This search has culminated in Qat, Coffee and Qambus: Raw 45s from Yemen, a compilation of reissued tracks from among his best finds, released last month on the Dust-To-Digital record label.

"The Yemeni music I was finding reminded me of early blues recordings," says Menist, who was in the country just weeks before the start of protests against the leadership of Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Special iTunes Promotion Includes Exclusive Bonus Tracks

New Video Filmed For "Two Joints"

Buzz Builds With Confirmed TV Including Conan, Letterman, Piers Morgan, Tavis Smiley and More

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Macy Gray, newly signed with 429 Records, is preparing for the release of her stunning new album "COVERED"—a collection of all new recordings of handpicked songs she's chosen to reinterpret in her own inimitable fashion. With a buzz kicked off by an announcement in Billboard and Rolling Stone, Macy is already confirmed to appear on prime media outlets including Conan, Late Show with David Letterman, Piers Morgan Tonight, Tavis Smiley, VH1 and more. Produced by Hal Willner (Lou Reed, Metallica), Zoux and Macy Gray, "COVERED" tackles material largely drawn from indie rock songs from the last decade—interpretations her fans will be familiar with as she's been performing them live over the years. The album contains biting, dark signature tracks such as Arcade Fire's "Wake Up" or My Chemical Romance's "Teenagers" which Gray subversively overhauls into something wholly her own. Also included are short skits featuring J.B. Smoove, Nicole Scherzinger and a guest appearance by Idris Elba. "COVERED" will be released worldwide on 429 Records March 26th with a special iTunes edition available which contains exclusive remixes of "Sail" and "Here Comes The Rain Again." In addition, Macy is planning a worldwide tour and has just completed the first video from the project. Helmed by famed director Robert DeVico (Pink, Lenny Kravitz, Missy Elliott), Macy's first video from "COVERED" will be "Smoke Two Joints." The wildly colorful, party-inspired clip features Macy and her bandmates performing against a picturesque Hollywood Hills backdrop and will be available to media outlets this month.

Since her dazzling debut introduced this singular talent to the masses, Macy has forged an uncompromising musical path beholden to her own vision and garnering accolades at every juncture. With "COVERED" Macy has turned the cover album concept on its ear choosing edgy contemporary choices and approaching them in an innovative and uncompromising way. "I'm stuck in here / I'm stuck / Wish I didn't have a name / Wish I could get lost / I'm stuck in here / I'm stuck"

The basic human desire to break free from one’s true self -- if only for a moment -- is a feeling Nate Kinsella (the sole songwriting force behind Birthmark) knows all too well.

Choose any song on Antibodies, Birthmark's third full-length, and you'll quickly find lyrics that reveal Kinsella isn't always at ease with being the person that he is.

"I get so scared, honey / I can never be somebody else / ... / I get so tired of hearing my own voice"

"I really do try to present myself as a positive person in normal everyday life," Kinsella says, "But I also spend a lot of time thinking about death and feeling guilty, remorseful, regretful, and everything in between."

And so, Antibodies became Kinsella's outlet for the adverse thoughts constantly lurking just beneath the surface.

From the contrast of how he views his own ugly faults in relation to his wife's beautiful flaws ("Your Imperfections") to his self-proclaimed inability to keep on living if a loved one were to be violently taken away ("Pacifist Manifesto"), Kinsella earnestly examines his own fears and shortcomings.

And yet, despite a lyrical slant toward acute self-criticism, musically Antibodies unfolds to the ebb and flow of a gentle, unhurried cadence that is often the hallmark of a record comfortable in its own skin.

This trait might not seem so surprising, though, when you consider the organic origins of its sounds.

From vibraphones to violins, cellos to clarinets, each instrument on the album was played either by Kinsella or a session musician. Even the stunning backwards string section on "Shake Hands" was painstakingly composed and performed with an actual string quartet.

Elsewhere, album closer "Big Man" resonates just as deeply from the opposite end of the musical spectrum. Pairing only a sparse bass guitar with Kinsella's reverberating vocals, the song is undeniably captivating in its sublime simplicity.

And in the end, Antibodies finds Kinsella closer to being at peace with the knowledge that, as he has learned, "for better or worse, you can't escape you ever."

"I wish I could be anything I have to be / But if I were anything different I wouldn't know the difference"

SOULSAVERS NEW ALBUM THE LIGHT THE DEAD SEE

RELEASED MAY 22 ON MUTE

LYRICS AND VOCALS BY DEPECHE MODE'S DAVE GAHAN

Soulsavers will release their new album The Light The Dead See through Mute (US/Canada) on May 22nd.

Featuring vocals and lyrics by Dave Gahan, the record is the follow-up to 2009’s critically acclaimed album Broken. Recorded at various locations and mastered at Abbey Road, the record will be available on CD and digital download.

“There was no real script,” says the laconic Rich Machin of the extraordinary fourth album The Light The Dead See, a set of songs of majesty and momentum. “It just rolled and rolled; it was effortless.”

Yet the writing was on the wall from the moment Dave Gahan stepped in to tackle vocal duties that this was going to be something very special. “We realized we were coming from the same place in so many ways,” adds Machin. “He’s really laid himself bare on this record, his performances are astonishing: he really is a terrific singer.”

Says Gahan, “Everything about it was relatively unplanned, surprising: a magical thing. We were a perfect match and I’m very, very excited about this record.”

Soulsavers – the music and production team of Rich Machin and Ian Glover – have been a growing force since 2003’s debut Tough Guys Don’t Dance. 2007’s It’s Not How Far You Fall, It’s The Way You Land brought their dark flair to a wider audience. The inimitable Mark Lanegan served as primary singer, though there were also vocal contributions from Will Oldham and Jimi Goodwin. In 2009, third album Broken confirmed that Soulsavers were moving away from early electronica to earthier guitars, use of space and what Machin described as “a soulful twist”. Lanegan again led the vocals on standouts such as ‘You Will Miss Me When I Burn’ and ‘All The Way Down’, with other guest vocalists including Oldham again, Jason Pierce, Richard Hawley, Mike Patton and Gibby Haynes. Clearly, there was no shortage of acclaimed singers ready to lend their lungs to Soulsavers’ stirring, seductive, soothing or startling creations.

Venturing out from the studio to the road, Soulsavers were invited to support Depeche Mode on the European leg of their vast and eventful 2009-10 Tour Of The Universe, during which tour Dave Gahan bounced back from more than his fair share of illness and injury. Here, the seeds of The Light The Dead See were sewn.

“We got to know each other,” says Machin. “I really warmed to him, thought he was a particularly nice guy. Dave said he was a fan of our previous albums, and watched us almost every night, and, as you do, we said: Hey, we should work on something, at some point in time…”

“The tour together was great,” recalls Gahan enthusiastically. “I love Soulsavers and I’ve also been a Lanegan junkie for years. Rich mentioned doing some writing, and I told him to send over any pieces he liked, however minimal. What Rich does – big grinding bluesy organs, gospel choirs – somehow that touches something in me.”

With Gahan penning lyrics for the music and recording his own vocals in New York, then Machin building up the results into fully-formed and arranged epics, the international project was a case of “chemistry working”. “Nothing he did, did I need to alter,” says Rich. “Everything he did just felt right.

Gahan was recovering from well-documented illness when the project began. “I’m very good now,” he says. “I still have my hospital visits now and again, but fingers crossed I’m in good health.” Then, just as the pair got settled into a rhythm, Machin acquired a “horrendous” ear/hearing problem. “I woke up in the middle of the night in agony; it was like someone was drilling into my ear.” He lost his hearing in one ear for around nine months, and is still learning to manage tinnitus. When it began to clear up, I was half-expecting we’d have to re-do everything, but it sounded great, so we pushed on. The train hadn’t come off the tracks.”

Gahan’s lyrics and melodies came to him with spontaneity and passion. “About five songs in, I realized I was writing outside myself. I was having a go at myself, to be honest: my questions around faith, and God, or the lack thereof at any given moment. Sometimes I’m full of faith, but there are always questions. And I struggle with letting go of control of what’s going on around me. This album became very therapeutic. No restrictions. Coming out of getting sick myself, I found I HAD to get this stuff out of me. This music gave me the perfect palate to play with the BIG questions that we all ask when life becomes less about what can we GET, than: what can we DO? I’ve been very fortunate, and I’m privileged in my life, so I want to do things I feel really connected to now, otherwise there’s no point. Rich and I had both come out of something difficult. This is something to do with that. It was a wonderful experience.”

ANATHEMA: Reissue On Vinyl

UK atmospheric rock band ANATHEMA has issued the following update:

"One of the most remarkable consequences of the digital music age is that vinyl has made something of a comeback. Remember vinyl, kids? It was like a big flat mp3, only it sounded better. The demand for high-quality sound and packaging has been reawakened in recent years and [we are] proud to share these pictures of the ANATHEMA album 'Eternity' (1996).

Reissued by Svart Records and re-packaged by Duncan the way it was originally intended to be. The new package includes: all-white gatefold artwork, original design, a new lyric booklet with liner notes from Duncan, a bag and of course two heavyweight 12" vinyls, repressed for maximum sound quality. Limited to just 1000 copies (500 white vinyl, 500 black).

one of my favorite groups of the 70's:

Ronnie Montrose ~ 1947-2012

this direct from Montrose's website:

"A few months ago, we held a surprise party for Ronnie Montrose's 64th birthday. He gave an impromptu speech, and told us that after a long life, filled with joy and hardship, he didn't take any of our love for granted.

He passed today. He'd battled cancer, and staved off old age for long enough. And true to form, he chose his own exit the way he chose his own life. We miss him already, but we're glad to have shared with him while we could."

Guitar virtuoso Ronnie Montrose launched his brilliant career with Irish rocker Van Morrison. Montrose played on the albums Tupelo Honey and Saint Dominic’s Preview. And Ronnie’s guitar riff on Morrison’s huge hit “Wild Night” will forever be cemented as one of the most memorable in classic rock history.

Montrose left Van Morrison to join The Edgar Winter Group and enjoyed commercial success with the release of They Only Come Out at Night. The album climbed up to Number 3 on the Billboard charts and spawned the enormous Top 40 hits “Frankenstein” (# 1 hit) and “Free Ride.” (# 14 hit)

In 1973 Ronnie felt the desire to orchestrate his own band and so he formed the hard rock group that bears his own signature MONTROSE. The combination of Ronnie Montrose on Les Paul and Sammy Hagar on vocals created a hard driving rock and roll machine that churned out monster releases Montrose and Paper Money and Hard Rock Classics like “Hard Candy,” “Bad Motor Scooter,” “Space Station No 5,” “I Got the Fire” and “Rock the Nation.”

and in music history for march 4th:

In 1877, the Tchaikovsky's ballet "Swan Lake" debuted.

In 1955, jazz great Charlie Bird Parker played at Birdland in what would be his last public performance.

In 1959, the winners of the first Grammy Awards were announced. Domenico Modugno's 'Volare' was Record of the Year; Henry Mancini's 'Peter Gunn' was Album of the Year and The Champs 'Tequila' won best R&B performance.

In 1963, the Beach Boys released "Surfin' USA." The song was a note-for-note copy of Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen" with new lyrics. After Berry sued, he was granted royalties, and all further issues of the song gave him writing credit. The "Surfin' USA" single, backed with "Shut Down," was released under Capitol Records in the United States in March 1963. The song peaked on the Billboard pop chart at number three, the band's first top ten hit therein. The B-side charted at number 23. The song was re-issued in the U.S. as a single in July 1974 backed with "The Warmth of the Sun". That single also hit the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at 36.

In 1966, in London, the Evening Standard newspaper published an article titled "How Does a Beatle Live? John Lennon Lives Like This." In one small part of the story, Lennon was quoted as saying, "Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue that. I'm right and will be proved right. We're more popular than Jesus right now. I don't know which will go first, rock 'n' roll or Christianity. Jesus was alright, but his disciples were thick and ordinary." The English public didn't raise an eyebrow over his remarks, but they caused controversy and protest in America when they were reprinted later in the U.S. teen magagine DATEbook. Thousands of Beatles records were smashed at mass rallies and some radio stations quit playing their songs altogether in protest. Lennon later apologized, explaining that what he meant was "the way some people carry on, (screaming at their concerts) you'd think we were more popular than Jesus Christ."

In 1967, the Rolling Stones went to #1 on the US singles chart with "Ruby Tuesday," the group's fourth US #1 single. "Lets Spend The Night Together" was the original A side but after radio stations banned the song 'Tuesday' became the A side.

In 1970, Janis Joplin was fined $200 for using obscene language onstage in Tampa, FL.

In 1973, Pink Floyd played the first night on a 19 date North American tour at the Dane County Memorial Coliseum in Madison, Wisconsin.

In1973, Elvis Presley released "Steamroller Blues."

In 1976, Hall & Oates recorded "Rich Girl."

In 1977, CBS released the Clash's self- titled first album in the UK. CBS in the U.S. refused to release it until 1979. Americans bought over 100,000 imported copies of the record making it one of the biggest- selling import records of all time.

In 1977, at the El Mocambo Tavern in Toronto and advertised only as a performance by the opening act April Wine, the Rolling Stones recorded four tracks for their "Love You Live" album.

In 1978, the Bee Gees achieved a rare feat on the Billboard Hot 100, with four of the top five songs performed by the Brothers (Stayin' Alive at #2, Night Fever at #5) or written by them (Samantha Sang's Emotion at #4, kid brother Andy Gibb's (Love Is) Thicker Than Water at #1). Dan Hill's "Sometimes When We Touch" was #3.

Also in 1978, the US internal Revenue Service carried out a dawn raid at the home of Jerry Lee Lewis and removed cars worth over £100,000 ($170,000) to pay off his tax debts.

In 1986, songwriter Howard Greenfield died of a brain tumour aged 50. Working out of the famous Brill Building with Neil Sedaka he co-wrote many hits including 'Calendar Girl', 'Breaking Up Is Hard To Do', and 'Crying In The Rain' with Carole King. Also wrote TV theme songs including the theme to 'Bewitched.'

In 1986, after just completing a two set show with The Band in Winter Park, Florida, 41 year old Richard Manuel of The Band hung himself from a shower curtain rod in a hotel room in Florida. His band mate, Robbie Robertson honored his friend with the song, 'Fallen Angel' in 1987.

In 1989, Debbie Gibson started a three week run at #1 on the US singles chart with "Lost In Your Eyes," her second US #1, a #34 hit in the UK.

In 2001, Shaggy featuring Rikrok went to #1 on the UK singles chart with 'It Wasn't Me'. It became the best-selling single of 2001, and was also a #1 in the US.

The disc found in her CD player was the Cliff Richard single, 'Peace in Our Time'. A spokesman for the Cliff Richard Organization said he was delighted to hear of somebody in their early 20s owning one of his many recordings. He added, Cliff would not want anyone to play his music so that it caused a nuisance.

In 2006, Jaheim was at #1 on the US album chart with 'Ghetto Classics' the American R&B singer's third album release.

'Drive' Soundtrack Headed For Vinyl Release

Last year's cult hit is scheduled to be released on vinyl via Invada, the Bristol-based label owned by Portishead's Geoff Barrow. The soundtrack is to hit the streets on 21st May.

The original soundtrack was one of the most praised aspects of the film, which featured Ryan Gosling as a stuntman/getaway driver and was released last year to generally rave reviews. Featuring original music by Kavinsky & Lovefoxxx, Cliff Martinez, The Chromatics, Desire and Riziero Ortolani, amongst others, the soundtrack's digital release sold impressively well upon the film's release.

"I am very excited for Invada Records to release the Drive soundtrack on vinyl," said Barrow of the release. "It is nice to see good music allowed to play a pivotal role in a great film."

THE LONESOME SAVAGES - "All Outta Love" EP 7" (Turk 009)

The Lonesome Savages are a Madison band featuring members of DEAD LUKE as well as ex-members of ZOLA JESUS. The first thing you'll notice about this release is Max Elliott's unmistakable howl, which you might recognize from his solo work on Sacred Bones Records. Alongside it you've got Dead Luke's searing leads (also from Sacred Bones Records along with Florida's Dying, Sweet Rot and Moon Glyph), and the original collaborator with his then-girlfriend (now ex-girlfriend), Nika/Zola Jesus. They've created a punkabilly masterpiece that teeters on Crampsesque infatuation but never really comes across as ripping them off. Just honest 50's inflected rock n roll revamped with elements of the current garage punk sound. This thing is loud as hell and the production straddles the line between blown out madness and vintage rock n roll warmness. The 7"'s digital download comes with an added 2 track solo digital single from Dead Luke! One unreleased track plus his cover of Suicide's "Ghost Rider"! Limited to 350 hand-numbered copies so they WILL go fast! First 100 are on color vinyl and available exclusively from the label directly.

LYNCHBURG, Tenn., March 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Jack Daniel's announces that it has started a "drinking school," and it's not what most folks will think it is.

In fact, the "Jack Daniel's Drinking School" is a new way to educate consumers about responsible consumption through an on-line based program (www.jackdanielsdrinkingschool.com) that provides helpful tips and reminders. Jack Daniel's is also debuting its new television campaign featuring two-time GRAMMY Award winners and multi-platinum artists Zac Brown Band sharing a message of loyalty and responsibility among friends and band members.

As part of a recently-formed partnership with Zac Brown Band, the Jack Daniel's Drinking School will offer concertgoers the opportunity to register for free designated-driver rides to and from select Zac Brown Band concerts in cities across the U.S. through BeMyDD. To receive one of the 100 free rides per eligible concert market, consumers must watch one of a series of online videos featuring the Zac Brown Band reminding folks to enjoy themselves, but to also take care of themselves as well as those around them. The videos are supplemented with information from leading expert organizations on responsible consumption and fighting drunk driving including The Century Council. Those who receive a free ride can also bring along up to three friends, ensuring the safety of many concertgoers as well as making the roads safer for others.

"Our emphasis on responsible consumption is incorporated into all of the ways we communicate with our friends across the country," said Jack Daniel's Senior Brand Manager Jennifer Powell. "The Jack Daniel's Drinking School is a great vehicle for this message and further proof of how strongly we feel about responsibility."

In addition to the free rides, the Jack Daniel's Drinking School offers concert attendees at select Zac Brown Band tour stops the opportunity to register as a designated driver for the evening of the show. Upon arrival at the concert venue, registered designated drivers can stop by a predetermined site to receive a Jack Daniel's Drinking School keychain and armband signifying their willingness to get their friends home safely following the show.

"Our partnership with Jack Daniel's provides concertgoers with a responsible solution to safely get to the show and back home," said BeMyDD President and CEO Arthur Simanovsky. "By letting BeMyDD do the driving, consumers can enjoy the evening with the peace of mind that they've made the responsible choice."

In addition to the Drinking School, Jack Daniel's is launching a national television campaign which includes a spot in which Zac Brown reminds viewers to "Protect Your Band" just as he and the rest of his crew feel it's their responsibility to take care of each other. The spot includes scenes of the band playing together and conveys a feeling of loyalty for those around you and love for what you do.

All Star Cast Including Tim Robbins, Dr. John, Bill Frisell, Ralph Steadman, Annie Ross And Others Bring Author's Masterpiece To Life With Music And Narration

"This is it. This is pure Gonzo!!"—Bill Cardoso

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- 429 Records through an exclusive license with Paris Records, is set to release "THE KENTUCKY DERBY IS DECADENT AND DEPRAVED BY HUNTER S. THOMPSON"—featuring an all-star cast of musicians and actors led by Tim Robbins, Dr. John, Bill Frisell, Ralph Steadman, Annie Ross, John Joyce III and Will Forte who bring Thompson's classic Gonzo reportage on the 1970 Kentucky Derby to life through spoken word and musical composition. Conceived by executive producer Michael Minzer, the project was produced by Hal Willner who brought together a stellar group of musicians led by composer and arranger Bill Frisell and including Curtis Fowlkes (trombone), Ron Miles (trumpet), Eyvind Kang (viola), Doug Weiselman (woodwinds), Jenny Scheinman (violin), Hank Roberts (cello) and Kenny Wolleson (drums, percussion). Ralph Steadman does double duty portraying himself in the narration and contributing original artwork for the project. "THE KENTUCKY DERBY IS DECADENT AND DEPRAVED BY HUNTER S. THOMPSON" will be available on April 3rd.

In 2005, Paris Records founder Michael Minzer called up his friend Hal Willner with the idea of recording a definitive performance of an all time classic piece of journalism, "The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved." Originally published in Scanlan's Monthly in June of 1970, it's the quintessential example of Hunter S. Thompson's uniquely humorous and piercing insight—the article that inspired the term Gonzo Journalism (coined by the late Bill Cardoso). Minzer and Willner had collaborated before on several "wide open" tributes to such literary luminaries as Allen Ginsberg's "The Lion For Real", William S. Burrough's "Dead City Radio" and Terry Southern's "Give Me your Hump!." Hal was friends with Ralph Steadman who's involvement was a major boost in getting the project off the ground. Hal also was able to enlist Tim Robbins as lead narrator and Bill Frisell to oversee the music and the project was off to the races so to speak.

Says Michael Minzer: "The big challenge was to match Bill's sharply drawn moody vignettes with the perfect segments of a very long reading. When we realized that it all worked out beautifully, Hal just said 'I told you I had worked on this!''

Says Tim Robbins: "I couldn't be more thrilled to be a part of this project—who could say no to such an opportunity to toast the king of Gonzo journalism? It's been a great pleasure diving into the chaotic, genius prose of Hunter and I feel flattered to be working with such a stellar group of creative folks like Hal Wilner, Ralph Steadman, Bill Frisell and Michael Minzer who made it come alive so brilliantly."
