Ask. Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 19, 2012

DEAR JERRY: I read with interest your column on the many Grammys won by Adele.

Would you now please list some of the most famous artists who never won a single Grammy Award?
—Phil Conley, Niagara Falls, N.Y.

Bill Haley
DEAR PHIL: I'm sure glad you said “some,” as a complete list of non-winners would be humongous. I will name names of some very “famous artists,” each of whom is as Grammy-worthy as some of the winners.

Because the inaugural Grammy Award nominees were for recordings released in 1958, though not announced until May 4, 1959, hundreds of stars from earlier years were just not eligible.

To remedy this unfortunate situation, the Recording Academy introduced a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1962, to honor selected pre-1958 “performers who made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording.”

A similar honor, named the Grammy Hall of Fame, exists specifically for songs and albums. Along with each enshrined title is a specific artist's name, though not necessarily the songwriter or the performer with the original version. These are simply the acts most associated with it by modern standards, such as honoring the Righteous Brothers' version of “Unchained Melody,” rather than Les Baxter's or Al Hibbler's.

Now for some legends who, if not for the Lifetime Achievement Award, would be Grammy-less. Up to two Hall of Fame titles, if any, follow each credited artist's name:

Eddy Arnold (HOF “Make the World Go Away”); Gene Autry (HOF “Back in the Saddle Again” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”); Carter Family (HOF “Wildwood Flower” and “Can the Circle Be Unbroken”); Enrico Caruso (HOF “Celest Aida” and “Vesti la Giubba”); Rosemary Clooney (HOF “Hey There”); Bing Crosby (HOF “White Christmas” and “Swinging on a Star”); Sammy Davis Jr. (HOF “What Kind of Fool Am I?”); Doris Day (HOF “Secret Love” and “Sentimental Journey”); Benny Goodman (HOF “And the Angels Sing” and “Moonglow”); Bill Haley and the Comets (HOF “Rock Around the Clock”); Billie Holiday (HOF “Embraceable You” and “God Bless the Child”); Robert Johnson (HOF “Cross Road Blues”); Glenn Miller (HOF “Chattanooga Choo Choo” and “In the Mood”); Mills Brothers (HOF “Paper Doll”); Bessie Smith (HOF “Empty Bed Blues” and “St. Louis Blues”); and Bob Wills (HOF “New San Antonio Rose”).

A few that are conspicuous by their absence in this category, at least so far, are: Mildred Bailey; Pat Boone; Connie Francis; Ink Spots (HOF “If I Didn't Care”); Platters (Featuring Tony Williams) (HOF “Only You” and “The Great Pretender”); Django Reinhardt (HOF “Djangology” and “Nuage”); Jimmie Rodgers (HOF “Blue Yodel”); Hank Snow (HOF “I'm Moving On”); Kay Starr (HOF “Wheel of Fortune”); Hank Thompson (HOF “The Wild Side of Life”); and Gene Vincent (HOF “Be-Bop-a-Lula”).

Each of these stars “made a creative contribution of outstanding artistic significance,” and is overdue for a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Now for those talented acts whose greatest success came in the Grammy era (1958 or later), but who have yet to win one: ABBA; Paul Anka; Brook Benton; Jimmy Buffett; Patsy Cline (HOF “Crazy” and “I Fall to Pieces”); Eddie Cochran (HOF “Summertime Blues”); Creedence Clearwater Revival (HOF “Proud Mary”); Dion (HOF “Runaround Sue” and, with the Belmonts, “I Wonder Why”); Drifters (HOF “Money Honey” and “Save the Last Dance for Me”); 4 Seasons; Connie Francis; Daryl Hall & John Oates; Sonny James; Jefferson Airplane/Starship (HOF “White Rabbit” and “Surrealistic Pillow” LP); Journey; Kinks (HOF “You Really Got Me”); Monkees; Moody Blues; Steve Miller Band; O'Jays; Buck Owens (HOF “I've Got a Tiger By the Tail”); Jim Reeves (HOF “He'll Have to Go”); Righteous Brothers (HOF “You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'” and “Unchained Melody”); Ventures; and Bobby Vinton.

IZ ZAT SO? Oh how they've grown. For the 1958 Grammys, 28 separate award categories were used.

For 2011, the Recording Academy's big night handed out Grammys in 74 categories.

UK Record Store Day List Is Released

Arctic Monkeys & Sex Pistols Among Record Store Day Releases

A couple of UK reissues are on my list (see below), and the UK have just released their list of 2012 Record Store Day goodies, which you can find after my notes.....now to get my hands on the releases for the US, still awaiting word from the folks at RSD....

The Arctic Monkeys are set to release their latest single "R U Mine" on a special edition purple vinyl and the unheard b-side is called "Electricity."

Additionally, the Sex Pistols are releasing a limited edition 7" record of their first single "Anarchy in the UK" on April 21st for Record Store Day. Originally released in November 1976, "Anarchy in the UK" was the band's first call to arms and single-handedly kick-started the punk movement that spread worldwide. 35 years later, to celebrate Record Store Day, the Sex Pistols are very proud to re-release a collector's edition, 7" vinyl picture disc of this seminal debut single.  The re-mastered single will also feature original b-side track "I Wanna Be Me", available internationally, but limited to just 3,500 records.

APRIL/EARLY MAY REISSUES FROM REAL GONE MUSIC

APRIL/EARLY MAY REISSUES FROM REAL GONE MUSIC INCLUDE LITTLE WILLIE JOHN, COWBOY COPAS, THE AD LIBS, MEL McDANIEL AND EDDIE RABBITT

Also due are two more Grateful Dead Dicks Picks sets, Volumes 30 & 31.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Real Gone Music will issue Little Willie John’s Complete Hit Singles A’s and B’s, a definitive compilation of the influential R&B singer’s King Records sides as well as King-Starday label mate Cowboy Copas’ Complete Hit Singles A’s & B’s, featuring 30 of the country legends’ sides from 1946-63, both slated for April 17, 2012 street date. On May 1, doo-woppers the Ab Libs will be celebrated on The Complete Blue Cat Recordings. And two country hit-makers from the ’70s and ’70s, Mel McDaniel and Eddie Rabbit, will be reissued — McDaniel with Baby’s Got Her Blue Jeans On — His Original Capitol Hits, and Rabbitt with 13 Original #1 Hits. Finally, Real Gone continues its acclaimed Grateful Dead Dick’s Picks reissues with Volume 30 and Volume 31.

Little Willie John was a genuine architect of soul. Along with Clyde McPhatter, Ray Charles and Sam Cooke, the visionary singer stood at the forefront of fusing gospel intensity to rhythm and blues tradition.

And had he not died inside a Walla Walla prison at the age of 30, his name would likely be etched in the same soul pantheon as his peers. In his short career, Willie cut a string of seminal sides for Cincinnati-based King Records from 1955-61 that rank among the finest R&B ever waxed. As Motown legend Lamont Dozier says in Bill Dahl’s notes to this collection, “Willie John was just an extraordinary talent. He knew how to touch you with a song, and he knew how to raise the hairs on the back of your neck.” Real Gone Music will offer the most comprehensive collection of this overlooked soul superstar ever assembled: two CDs, 32 tracks that include every chart hit plus its accompanying, seldom-compiled B-side. And the B-sides are where some of the real fun is: joining such landmark R&B recordings as “Fever,” “All Around the World,” “Need Your Love So Bad” and “Home at Last” on this collection are such crackling tunes as “Spasms,” “Let’s Rock While the Rockin’s Good” and “Do You Love Me” (recorded with Little Richard’s band the Upsetters).

To many, Lloyd Estel “Cowboy” Copas is just a footnote to the Patsy Cline legend, having perished in the same plane crash that claimed her life and that of Hawkshaw Hawkins; but what many folks don’t realize is that Cope had 14 hits during his lifetime while Patsy had but nine. Clearly, the intervening years have burnished and magnified Patsy’s legend; they’ve also unjustly neglected this early Grand Ole Opry stalwart. Now, with Complete Hit Singles A’s & B’s, Real Gone has assembled the most comprehensive Cowboy Copas collection to date: two CDs, 30 tracks including every hit and its accompanying, rarely‐if‐ever‐compiled B‐sides. Cope got his start in Pee Wee King’s band, and you can hear a bit of that bandleader’s freewheeling approach to country in these songs, among many other influences. In fact, as Colin Escott writes in the accompanying liner notes, “His records were so personable and so unlike any others from that day and time. Not honky tonk, not bluegrass, not Western swing, not hillbilly, not pop crossover, they could be labeled Cowboy Copas records.” This Cowboy Copas collection is the one to have — essential country spanning the years from 1946-63, the year Cope died.

On the heels of Real Gone’s well-received Red Bird Girls: Very First Time in True Stereo 1964-1966 comes another incredible find for doo-wop and girl-group fans: the first-ever legitimate album devoted to the classic Blue Cat recordings by the legendary vocal group The Ad-Libs, featuring 24 tracks taken by producers Ron Furmanek and Ash Wells straight from the original master session tapes (again, another first) including five unreleased songs and nine unreleased alternate versions! And among those unreleased alternate versions are a full three newly discovered versions of their big hit “The Boy from New York City,” highlighted by an a cappella demo version that must be heard. Most tracks make their true stereo debut, while the 12-page booklet boasts great liner notes by James Moniz that offer insights from original Ad-Lib Norman Donegan, plus a foreword from Manhattan Transfer member Tim Hauser.

The late country legend Mel McDaniel scored a string of 41 chartmakers during the ’70s and ’80s, but there’s never been a hits collection worthy of the name until now. Twenty-one original Capitol sides from McDaniel appear on Baby’s Got Her Blue Jeans On — His Original Capitol Hits, including such good-time anthems as “Louisiana Saturday Night,” “Big Ole Brew” (Mel preferred to drink his beer rather than cry in it), “Let It Roll (Let It Rock),” “Stand Up” and, of course one of the great girl-watching songs of all time, “Baby’s Got Her Blue Jeans On.” McDaniel was one of the real bright lights of ’80s country, and Real Gone is proud to give him his due.

13 #1 Hits compiles the chart-topping hits of Eddie Rabbitt, one of the biggest pop and country music stars of the ’70s and ’80s. In addition to the great singles Eddie recorded for Elektra and Warner — “Drivin’ My Life Away,” “I Love a Rainy Night,” “Every Which Way But Loose,” and more — Real Gone cross-licensed the hits owned by Capitol—“Someone Could Lose a Heart Tonight,” “You and I,” “Best Year of My Life,” etc.—AND the #1 hit duet he recorded with Juice Newton for RCA, “Both to Each Other (Friends and Lovers).” Liner notes and photos recount the story of one of country music’s biggest crossover artists. No other Eddie Rabbitt collection packs this hit power.

Real Gone Music continues its Grateful Dead Dick’s Picks reissues with two new titles available in stores for the first time: The four-CD set Dick’s Picks Vol. 30 — Academy of Music, New York City, NY 3/25 & 3/28/72 kicks off with five tracks featuring blues legend Bo Diddley (taken from a 3/25/72 benefit for the Hell’s Angels), which ought to be enough to get those Dead collector synapses firing. The final three discs present a complete show from March 28, 1972 that’s very Europe ’72 in its set list but with that extra edge that playing in New York always seemed to inspire in the band, all recorded by Dead sound guru Betty Cantor-Jackson. The set features HDCD sound and contain the Dead’s lone renditions of “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)” and “Are You Lonely for Me.”

The four-CD Dick’s Picks Vol. 31 — 8/4-5 Philadelphia Civic Center, Philadelphia, PA 8/6/74, Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, NJ captures the Dead right in the thick of the legendary 1974 Wall of Sound tour and only two months away from leaving the road for a year-and-a-half hiatus. The Wall of Sound was, of course, the massive sound system designed by Owsley “Bear” Stanley that was so meticulously constructed that, for example, each string of Phil Lesh’s bass had its own speaker. The result was a crystal-clear sound that to this day stirs controversy among the band’s fans. It certainly complemented and even encouraged the band’s continued move away from the country-rock of Workingman’s Dead towards a jazz fusion sound best expressed by the two epic versions of “Playing in the Band” found here.

Unlike most Dick’s Picks collections, this four-disc set offers highlights from three consecutive nights of shows (again, all in HDCD sound) rather than presenting shows in their entirety.

The Annenberg Space for Photography Presents WHO SHOT ROCK & ROLL: A Photographic History, 1955 - Present, Opening June 23, 2012

LOS ANGELES, March 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Annenberg Space for Photography is pleased to announce its next exhibit – WHO SHOT ROCK & ROLL, a group show featuring the work of over 100 photographers. Originally shown and created by the Brooklyn Museum with guest curator and author Gail Buckland, WHO SHOT ROCK & ROLL is the first major museum exhibit on rock and roll to spotlight the creative and collaborative role that photographers played in the history of rock music. WHO SHOT ROCK & ROLL opens to the public in Los Angeles on June 23, 2012 and runs through October 7, 2012.

The Los Angeles showing of this exhibit is the only one on the western coast of the United States and will feature an original documentary film produced by Arclight Productions exclusively for the Annenberg Space for Photography. The film will be shown in vivid detail on two 14' by 7' screens in 4K resolution and will feature new photographs, interviews and behind the scenes footage with exhibit photographers Ed Colver, Henry Diltz, Jill Furmanovsky, Lynn Goldsmith, Bob Gruen, Norman Seeff, Mark Seliger and Guy Webster. Shot in Los Angeles, New York and the United Kingdom, the film will also include appearances by recording artists such as Alice Cooper and Henry Rollins, as well as rock photography uber-collector Michael Ochs, Grammy-winning album cover designer Gary Burden and Gail Buckland.

WHO SHOT ROCK & ROLL features 166 prints from iconic photographers such as Amy Arbus, Diane Arbus, Roberta Bayley, Stephanie Chernikowski, Danny Clinch, Anton Corbijn, Godlis, Jean-Paul Goude, Ross Halfin, Dennis Hopper, Richard Kern, David LaChapelle, Michael Lavine, Annie Leibovitz, Gered Mankowitz, Jim Marshall, Linda McCartney, Ryan McGinley, Marcia Resnick, Stephane Sednaoui, Pennie Smith, Storm Thorgerson and Albert Watson.

Through the lenses of the photographers, visitors will experience the history of rock & roll through the following:

•Rare images behind the scenes like Alfred Wertheimer's series of photos of Elvis Presley playfully kissing a woman backstage before a performance

•Young artists at the start of their careers including Maripol's shot of Madonna at Danceteria in 1983

•Live performances like Ian Dickson's photo of The Ramones playing a club in Liverpool, England

•Fans like the Central Press photo of London bobbies holding back a crush of fevered Beatles fans outside Buckingham Palace

•Portraits that reveal the soul of the musician such as Michael Lavine's haunting portrait of Notorious B.I.G. taken at Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn

•Images highlighting the artistic collaboration between photographers and musicians like Richard Kern and Marilyn Manson's take on Marilyn Monroe's infamous nude calendar photograph

In addition, visitors will see a slideshow of 80 images by Henry Diltz taken between 1966-1990 set to a soundtrack. Woven into the lively exhibit, brief music videos will include Sonic Youth's Death Valley '69 by Judith Barry and Richard Kern, U2's One and Electrical Storm by Anton Corbijn, Grace Jones' One Man Show by Jean-Paul Goude, The Vines' Outtathaway by David LaChapelle and Bjork's Big Time Sensuality by Stephane Sednaoui and a video of Elvis performing "Heartbreak Hotel" from the TV program, "Stage Show."

The Annenberg Space for Photography has partnered with acclaimed Los Angeles public radio station KCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com) to create a live music series during the month of July. KCRW's influence in the careers of many musicians, both established and up-and-coming, is unquestionable. The Saturday night live music series will create an exciting addition to WHO SHOT ROCK & ROLL and remind music fans from across the city and beyond as to the importance live performances have played in the history of rock music. The series will be free and open to the public. Further details will be announced in coming months.

The Space's successful IRIS Nights lecture series will offer an additional unique perspective into the world of rock music, featuring photographers and guest artists sharing their experiences documenting the images of rock music through the years.

and in music history for march 21st:

In 1952, the Cleveland Arena is the site of what will become recognized as the world's first major Rock 'n' Roll concert. With over 10,000 people inside and another 20,000 waiting outside, Alan Freed is set to broadcast the event 'live' over WJW radio. Paul Williams and His Hucklebuckers were playing their first song when city officials decided to shut the proceedings down, citing fire code violations. Doors and windows were smashed, a few fights broke out, but no one asked for their $1.75 admission back.

In 1956, rock 'n' roll pioneer Carl Perkins received four broken ribs and a broken shoulder in a car accident that killed his brother Jay while the two were on their way the way to appear on The Perry Como Show in New York. Perkins would spend several months in the hospital and by the time he is well, Elvis Presley had covered his song, "Blue Suede Shoes".

In 1960, at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Elvis Presley recorded "Stuck On You," "Fame And Fortune," "A Mess Of Blues" and "It Feels So Right."

In 1961, the Beatles, with Pete Best on drums, played their first evening show at Liverpool's Cavern Club, opening for an act called the Bluegenes, who later renamed themselves the Swinging Blue Jeans.

In 1963, Billy J. Kramer And The Dakotas entered Abbey Road studios to record the Lennon / McCartney tune "Do You Want To Know A Secret", which will reach #1 in the UK, topping The Beatles themselves.

In 1964, the Beatles replaced one Billboard chart topper with another when "She Loves You" took over from "I Want To Hold Your Hand".

In 1967, John Lennon took his first major LSD trip and freaked out while recording backing vocals on the track "Getting Better." Producer George Martin, not realizing the effects of the drug, took Lennon to the roof of Abbey Road Studios to get some fresh air. Paul and George, upon learning where John was, rushed up to get him down. The group worked on a piano track for "Lovely Rita" instead.

In 1969, at the Amsterdam Hilton, John Lennon and Yoko Ono staged their first 'bed-in' for peace.

In 1970, the Faces, featuring newcomers Rod Stewart and Ron Wood, released their debut LP, 'First Step.'

In 1973, the BBC banned all teenybopper acts appearing on UK TV show Top Of The Pops, after a riot following a David Cassidy performance.

In 1976, David Bowie, Iggy Pop and several others are arrested in New York and charged with possession of marijuana.

In 1981, although they had been making records for ten years, REO Speedwagon enjoyed their first taste of success when "Keep On Loving You" became the top tune in the US. The band would go on to place twelve more songs in the Top 40.

In 1984, Yoko Ono opens Strawberry Fields, an area in New York's Central Park dedicated to the memory of her late husband, John Lennon.

In 1987, 35 year old Dean Martin Jr. of Dino, Desi and Billy, died when his F-4 Phantom fighter-jet crashed into California's San Bernardino Mountains during a snowstorm about 100 kilometers east of Los Angeles. Dino was serving in the Air National Guard at the time. He was married and divorced from ice skater Dorothy Hamill and actress Olivia Hussey.

In 1991, Leo Fender, who pioneered the electric guitar, passed away at the age of 81. He started mass producing solid body electric guitars in the late 40s and when he sold his guitar company in 1965, sales were in excess of $40 million a year.

In 1992, former model Vanessa Williams started a five week run at the top of the US singles chart with "Save The Best To Last", a #3 hit in the UK.

In 2002, John "Speedy" Keene, vocalist and drummer for Thunderclap Newman died at the age of 56. The band's biggest hit came in 1969 with "Something In The Air".

In 2004, Johnny Bristol, who had a 1973 hit with "Hang On In There Baby", died of natural causes at the age of 65.

In 2006, three South African women whose father, Solomon Linda, wrote "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" in 1939, won a six-year court battle that gives them 25 per cent of all past and future royalties from the song. The court ruled that the song, which the Tokens adapted from a Pete Seeger song called "Wimoweh," was actually Linda's 1939 adaptation of a native folk song. Linda, who died in 1962, had nothing to leave to his family, which was destitute at the time of the ruling.

In 2008, the long legal battle over the use of the Beach Boys' name came to a close after two days of talks mediated by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge. Mike Love, Brian Wilson and the estate of the late Carl Wilson had launched several law suits against former band member Al Jardine, who had been touring under various names such as "Beach Boys Family and Friends". Terms of the settlement were not disclosed, however hope rose again of a long-awaited reunion of the band's three surviving co-founders.

In 2011, a lost David Bowie album called 'Toy,' which went unreleased since 2001, mysteriously appeared on several file-sharing websites. The collection of mostly re-recorded tracks from Bowie's early years, had been locked in a dispute with Virgin Records.

In 2011, Loleatta Holloway, best known for the 1980 Disco hit "Love Sensation," died of heart failure at the age of 64.

birthdays today include (among others); Rose Stone (Sly & the Family Stone) (67), Ray Dorset (Mungo Jerry) (66), Eddie Money (63), Roger Hodgson (Supertramp) (62), Russell Tompkins, Jr. (Stylistics), 61), Robert Sweet (Stryper) (52) and Andrew Copeland (Sister Hazel) (44)

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

awesome write up from toledo ohio, long live record stores!

Vinyl-LP seller goes back behind counter

BY TYREL LINKHORN BLADE BUSINESS WRITER

Amjad Doumani, who owned a record store in Toledo from 1987 to 1994, has reopened a storefront business downtown at 137 N. Michigan street. When Amjad Doumani closed his record store at the end of 1994 and began taking orders online and by mail, he always hoped he'd again find himself selling LPs and music memorabilia from behind the counter.

Seventeen years later, he is.

In late January, Mr. Doumani reopened B-Bop Records at 137 N. Michigan St. in downtown Toledo. He likes to say his music store is both the oldest and newest in Toledo.

Though the business has been successful in its online form, it wasn't quite the same.

"For me, the thing I missed the most about having a storefront were the relationships I cultivated with my clientele. That's what's great about independent businesses and businesses like B-Bop Records," he said. "When someone comes in here, you know what they like, what they don't like, and you can turn them on to [new music]."

The Beatles' Yellow Submarine Feature Film Restored for May Release on DVD and Blu-ray; Film's Songtrack Album to be Reissued

Once upon a time ... or maybe twice ... there was an unearthly paradise called Pepperland ...

LONDON, March 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Beatles' classic 1968 animated feature film, Yellow Submarine, has been digitally restored for DVD and Blu-ray release on May 28 (May 29 in North America). The film's songtrack album will be reissued on CD on the same date.

Currently out of print, the film has been restored in 4K digital resolution for the first time by Paul Rutan Jr. and his team of specialists at Triage Motion Picture Services and Eque Inc. Due to the delicate nature of the hand-drawn original artwork, no automated software was used in the digital clean-up of the film's restored photochemical elements. This was all done by hand, frame by frame.

Bonus features for the Yellow Submarine DVD and Blu-ray include a short making-of documentary titled "Mod Odyssey" (TRT: 7:30), the film's original theatrical trailer, audio commentary by producer John Coates and art director Heinz Edelmann, several brief interview clips with others involved with the film, storyboard sequences, 29 original pencil drawings and 30 behind-the-scenes photos. Both Digipak packages will include reproductions of animation cels from the film, collectible stickers, and a 16-page booklet with a new essay by Yellow Submarine aficionado John Lasseter (Chief Creative Officer, Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios).

Lasseter writes in his essay, "As a fan of animation and as a filmmaker, I tip my hat to the artists of Yellow Submarine, whose revolutionary work helped pave the way for the fantastically diverse world of animation that we all enjoy today."

Directed by George Dunning, and written by Lee Minoff, Al Brodax, Jack Mendelsohn and Erich Segal, Yellow Submarine began its voyage to the screen when Brodax, who had previously produced nearly 40 episodes of ABC's animated Beatles TV series, approached The Beatles' manager Brian Epstein with a unique vision for a full-length animated feature.

Yellow Submarine, based upon a song by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, is a fantastic tale brimming with peace, love, and hope, propelled by Beatles songs, including "Eleanor Rigby," "When I'm Sixty-Four," "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," "All You Need Is Love," and "It's All Too Much." When the film debuted in 1968, it was instantly recognized as a landmark achievement, revolutionizing a genre by integrating the freestyle approach of the era with innovative animation techniques.

Inspired by the generation's new trends in art, the film resides with the dazzling Pop Art styles of Andy Warhol, Martin Sharp, Alan Aldridge and Peter Blake. With art direction and production design by Heinz Edelmann, Yellow Submarine is a classic of animated cinema, featuring the creative work of animation directors Robert Balser and Jack Stokes with a team of animators and technical artists.

"I thought from the very beginning that the film should be a series of interconnected shorts," remembers Edelmann. "The style should vary every five minutes or so to keep the interest going until the end."

These styles included melding live-action photography with animation, 3-dimensional sequences and kaleidoscopic "rotoscoping" where film is traced frame by frame into drawings. The entire process took nearly two years, 14 different scripts, 40 animators and 140 technical artists, ultimately producing a groundbreaking triumph of animation.

On April 24, Candlewick Press will release a new, compact hardcover edition of the Yellow Submarine picture book, a read-aloud journey for the whole family. Featuring the lighthearted wit of the film's script alongside original artwork from the movie that has charmed children and adults through several generations, the beautiful, 40-page book will be sold by retailers everywhere and on the Beatles Store

An interactive digital version of the book is also available as a free download on Apple's iBookstore for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch at www.iTunes.com/TheBeatles

and in music history for march 20th:

In 1957, Bobby Helms had his biggest single, "Fraulein", reach the US Country chart. The song eventually hit number 1, spending 52 weeks on the chart, longer than any other Country song of the 1950s. Later in the year, he had another number one record with "My Special Angel". Bobby released "Jingle Bell Rock" in November and would return to the US Top 40 on two other occasions.

In 1959, Bobby Rydell made his first TV appearance, on "American Bandstand."

In 1960, Elvis Presley enters a Nashville recording studio for the first time since being discharged from the US Army. A twelve hour session will produce his next single, "Stuck On You", which will top the Billboard chart a month later. Scotty Moore and Bill Black, who had quit Presley's touring band in 1957, are in the studio with him for the last time.

In 1961, Ricky Nelson records "Hello Mary Lou", which would climb to number 9 in the US by early May.

Also in 1961, the top tune in the US was Elvis Presley's "Surrender," which used updated lyrics put to a melody that was written in 1911 as "Come Back To Sorrento". The song would also reach #1 in the UK.

In 1964, the Beatles were given a special award by Billboard magazine in recognition of their holding the top three positions on the charts. The Fab Four also made their first appearance on the British TV show "Ready Steady Go!," lip-syncing "Can't Buy Me Love," "It Won't Be Long," and "You Can't Do That."

Also in the Beatles released "Can't Buy Me Love" in the UK in 1964.

In 1965, the first Motown tour of the U.K. opens with Martha & the Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, the Supremes and the Temptations.

In 1968, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Richie Furay and Jim Mesina are arrested at Stephen Stills' house in Los Angeles for "being at a place where it is suspected marijuana is being used." It's a misdemeanor for which Clapton will be found innocent while the others paid small fines.

In 1969, after days of looking for a suitable, legal place, John Lennon married Yoko Ono in the British Consulate Office at the Rock of Gibraltar in Spain, a piece of land still owned by the English and described by Lennon as being necessarily "quiet, friendly, and British." Later, in the Beatles song "The Ballad Of John And Yoko," he described the site as "Gibraltar, near Spain," unintentionally adding fuel to the fire of an international controversy, as England and Spain were then at odds over the area's ownership.

In 1970, David Bowie marries American-born model Angela Barnett. She is often said to be the subject of the Rolling Stones' tune, "Angie".

In 1972, Ringo Starr released "Back Off, Boogaloo." "Boogaloo" was Ringo's nickname for Paul McCartney. The song was Ringo urging Paul to stop his snide remarks in the press about the other Beatles, and just make good music.

On this day in 1972, "Heart Of Gold" by Neil Young was the #1 song. The song, which features backup vocals of James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt, is one of a series of soft acoustic pieces which were written partly as a result of a back injury. Unable to stand for long periods of time, Young could not play his electric guitar and so returned to his acoustic guitar, which he could play sitting down. "Heart of Gold" was taped during the initial sessions for Harvest in early 1971 at Quadrafonic Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. Ronstadt and Taylor were in Nashville at the time for an appearance on Johnny Cash's television program, and the album's producer Elliot Mazer arranged for them to sing backup for Young in the studio.  In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked it #297 on their list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

"Young Blood" by Bad Company was released in 1976.

Also in 1976, Boz Scaggs' biggest album, 'Silk Degrees' makes its first appearance on the Billboard chart, where it will climb to #2. It's his seventh solo album, but the first to go Platinum. Among the accompanying studio musicians were David Paich, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Porcaro and David Hungate, who would go on to form the band Toto.

In 1977, T-Rex played their final gig when they appeared at The Locarno in Portsmouth, England.

In 1980, 28 year old Joseph Riviera took over the Asylum Records office in New York and demanded to see either Jackson Browne or The Eagles, wanting them to finance his trucking operation. He surrendered when told that neither act was in the office.

In 1982, Buckner & Garcia performed "Pac-Man Fever" on "American Bandstand."

In 1982, Joan Jett And The Blackhearts started a seven week run at #1 on the US singles chart with "I Love Rock 'n' Roll". It was a #4 hit in the UK.

In 1989, Dick Clark announces his retirement from American Bandstand. On April 8th, comedian David Hirsch would take over, but the show was never the same and came to an end on October 7th. It continued to tape live at the Harrah's Club and Casino in Reno, Nevada, and aired locally until the mid-1990s.

In 1990, Gloria Estefan and her band are injured in a bus accident near Scranton, PA.

In 1991, Eric Clapton's four year old son, Conor, fell to his death from the 53rd story of a New York City apartment window. The boy was in the custody of his mother, Italian actress, Lori Del Santo and the pair were visiting a friend's apartment. The housekeeper had just cleaned a room and opened the window to air it out. Eric was staying in a nearby hotel after taking his son to the circus the previous evening. The tragedy inspired his song "Tears in Heaven."

Also in 1991, it was announced that Michael Jackson and Sony signed a contract that gave an $18 million advance for the forthcoming album "Dangerous." The contract also made Jackson the CEO of the newly formed Nation Records (which changed its name to MJJ). The deal was reported to be worth $1 billion.

"Baby It's You," by the Beatles, was released in 1995.

In 2002, EMI announced they would be ridding their roster of 400 acts in an attempt to save $140 million.

In 2003, on the day war breaks out in Iraq, Bruce Springsteen opens his Australian concert with "Born in the U.S.A." and "War."

Also in 2003, the South Carolina House of Representatives passed a resolution asking the Dixie Chicks to apologize for statements made about then president Bush and put on a concert for returning troops.

birthdays today include (among others): Douglas Green (Riders in the Sky) (66), Carl Palmer (Atomic Rooster, Emerson Lake &Palmer, Asia) (62), Guy Perry (Motels) (61), Richard Drummie (Go West) (53), Alex Kapranos (Franz Ferdinand) (40) and Chester Bennington (Linkin Park) (36)

our friends at vintagevinylnews have this gem:

Interview: Dizzy Reed of Guns N' Roses

Jonathon Freeman-Anderson of Music-News.com recently had the chance to talk to Dizzy Reed, keyboard player for Guns N' Roses since 1990.

Guns n’ Roses is perhaps one of the most well known 80s rock groups of all time. Despite a tumultuous history and an extraordinarily long time between albums, the band fronted by Axl Rose continues to play on.

Cycling through a number of musicians, the current line-up has almost completely changed except for two men, the aforementioned Rose, and keyboardist, Dizzy Reed. A band member since the 1990s Use Your Illusion record, Reed is the longest standing and only member of Guns N' Roses besides Axl to have played along with the original line-up. Since then, Reed has been a guest artist on almost every former member of G N’ R’s solo work while also maintaining his post with Axl. Reed has sustained a consistent rock n’ roll lifestyle for over 25 years and this year, Reed will be inducted into the Rock n’ Roll hall-of-fame for his work with Guns n’ Roses.

Alice Cooper Delivers One-of-a-Kind Commencement Speech

by: Shauna Wright

Most graduation ceremonies feature some boring person droning on as everyone checks their watches and wonders when they can leave. But what if your commencement speaker was Alice Cooper?

On Saturday, 600 grads from the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles were treated to witty oratory from the shock-rocker, who also received an honorary doctorate from the school.

Since it’s his second such award, he quipped, “One more of these and I can write prescriptions.”

Initially poor sales led the record to be known around Columbia Records as ‘Hammond's Folly’ (John Hammond was producer of Dylan’s early recordings and the man responsible for signing Dylan). The album was praised by the New York City weekly newspaper Village Voice as an ‘explosive country blues debut’, but featured only two Dylan original compositions, Talkin' New York and Song To Woody, the rest being old folk standards.

In 1962, at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Elvis Presley recorded "Just Tell Her Jim Said Hello," "Suspicion" and "She’s Not You."

The current fashion did not include wearing ties with shirts and many tie-makers were facing financial disaster. Mick Jagger said of the appeal, “The trouble with a tie is that it could dangle in the soup. It is also something extra to which a fan can hang when you are trying to get in and out of a theater.”

In 1968, the Jimi Hendrix Experience played two shows at The Capitol Theatre, Ottawa, Canada.

In 1982, Ozzy Osbourne's rhythm guitarist and former Quiet Riot member Randy Rhoads was killed when the plane he was riding in crashed. After driving much of the night, the band had stopped near a small airstrip. The tour bus driver, Andrew Aycock, talked the band's keyboardist, Don Airey, into taking a test flight in a '55 Beechcraft Bonanza, the joyride ended, and the plane landed safely. Then Aycock took Rhoads and Rachel Youngblood on another flight and attempts were made to "buzz" the tour bus.
