Placing A Value On Vinyl Records

One element of the ever changing music industry is that the sale of vinyl records has increased and that these audio treasures are still in demand.  In our age of digital products and downloads, there are still millions who prefer the sound and experience of vinyl records.  In this article, let’s explore how a person can ascertain just how much a particular record is worth.

There are many factors and variables that come into play, whether buying or selling records.  The ‘grading’ of a record is very subjective and because no two people grade the record the same, many problems arise when reselling new and used vinyl.

The value of a record is, and this is putting it in a very simplistic way, is what a person is willing to pay another person or business for the record.  But there are many other variables that must be considered to put a value on a record, let’s look at them:

There is a common misconception that because a record is old, that it is valuable.  On the contrary, some records that are just a few months old have more value than some that are 50 years old.  And, while it is true that some bands and artists are more sought after and command a better resale price, the condition of the record is paramount, whether the record is a week old or seventy years old; age is not a determining factor, but condition is.

Grading

There are several different methods of grading records and unfortunately there is no ‘standard’ that everyone uses.  But let’s look at one of the more widely accepted grading methods, which is in the “Rockin’ Records” price guide, written by the genre’s leading authority; Jerry Osborne.    In this method, the record are given a certain ‘grade’ as to their condition, here are the grades:

Mint (M)- an absolutely perfect record in every way-to allow for a tiny blemish or flaw, this record would be considered Near Mint, which is the highest grade used the in the Osborne record price guides and what the prices in the record guides reflect.

Very Good (VG) - records in this condition should have a minimum of visual or audio imperfections that do not detract from your enjoyment and listening pleasure.  You may see a plus or minus after this grade.

Good (G) - From a practical standpoint, this grade may mean the record is a good enough copy to fill a gap in your collection until you can secure a better copy.  This record will show obvious signs of wear and tear and play all the way through without skipping.

The prices quoted in the record guides are for records in Near Mint condition.  Osborne explains what you can expect using the following formula.  For very good condition, the record is worth 25-50% of the Near Mint price listed in his guides.  For Good, figure 10-25% of the near mint price given in his guides.  Another common mistake is that people take the price in the guides, grade the record and then do not ‘downgrade’ for the flaws and condition issues.

Another confusing aspect to this method is that some records might be listed as VG + or VG- or VG++ or NM-.  But, what exactly is the person grading the record mean with these notations?  Is it for the record, the sleeve, the LP jacket or the record itself?  You can see why this way of grading can be very confusing to someone just starting a record collection.

Osborne also suggests a ten point grading scale and some feel that this system allows for a more precise description of the record than the mint, very good, good scale.  Here is the scale:

10-Mint
9- Near Mint
8- better than VG but below NM
7- VG
6- better than Good but below VG
5- Good
4- better than Poor but below Good
3- Poor
2 and 1- why bother adding these to a collection?

I prefer the ten point scale, as it eliminates some of the confusion and provides a better description than VG- or VG++ or G-.  One important factor that Osborne stresses is to be honest about the condition and grade, meaning apply the same standard to the record you want to buy or sell as you would want the seller or buyer to give.  But, and this goes along with Osborne’s recommendation, is a TRUST factor.  You must assume and trust that the person giving the grade to the record is honest and will be held accountable for the grade.

But just because a record is visually acceptable may not mean it plays that way, so one must take that into consideration as well.  So if you are buying a record you may also ask if it plays the grade that it was given.  A long time ago, these two went together, but it seems that we have gotten away from this.

Another element in the grading process, and I have seen this done several ways, is the condition of the LP jacket, picture sleeve, inserts and liner notes.  Some sellers may give you two ratings, one for the record and one for the other elements.  There are some very valuable album covers and picture sleeves (from 45 rpm records) and these must also be accounted for in the selling price or the value of a vinyl record.

As you can see, this is a ‘gray area’ when buying and selling vinyl and one that is very subjective.  Condition is the most important factor when buying and selling vinyl and when buying records you must be able to find a trustworthy seller and ascertain which method they are using to grade what they have for sale.  And, as previously stated, the record price guides lists the prices for records in near mint condition, so that must be taken into account.  Obviously, this all can be a bit confusing for a beginner, but a little common sense and education can help any buyer in their quest to add to their collection.

Scarcity

Many, many millions of vinyl records are in circulation, with almost every household in the US, either having some vinyl records at one time or another.  We even had a vinyl record ‘boon’ from around 1955-1980.  But, how many of those records are still around and more importantly, what condition are they in?

For instance, rhythm and blues records from the 1950’s suffered from poor promotion and publicity, therefore there were fewer of these that were pressed.  The record companies that produced these particular records were small and lacked the resources that the larger record companies enjoyed, some may have been limited to only one or two thousand being pressed,   On the other hand, the Beatles records were massed produced and they benefited from much larger pressings and are a fairly common record (depending on the label) and some are not worth as much as one might think.  This brings us to another element-demand.

Demand

Like any other commodity, vinyl records are subject to the old supply and demand adage that is prevalent in any free market society.  Record values were affected by the Internet age, especially with the many online auction sites.  Records that were thought to be rare and valuable suddenly came out of the closets and basements and were put up for sale and brought some prices down.  But, that has evened out at this time and the record price guides and prices reflect that.  If there is a demand for a certain genre or artist, chances are the price will go up, more people want these type of record and there is more competition for them.  For instance, the music genre called Northern Soul (commonly known as Motown) enjoyed resurgence in sales in the past few years, driving up the prices.  Conversely, there is not a lot of demand for classical music (in fact, there aren’t even any price guides for this genre of music); therefore you cannot expect to get much for the records.

History

This element of putting a value on a vinyl record goes hand in hand with the relative scarcity of the record.  Many special musical genres in recorded music often command a higher price because of their place in music history.  For instance, the early roots of country music from the early 1930s and 1940’s, early jazz recordings, the rock and roll ‘infancy’ recordings (including rockabilly, rhythm and blues, the ‘girl’ groups of the 60’s, ) are often highly sought after and therefore of more value.  Some early Motown, psychedelic music, surf music, garage band rock and doo wop often command a higher price because these are records that have a prominent historical value in recorded sound.


Artist or Group

Obviously there are some musical icons that sell better than others and are in command.  Early Elvis records, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix just to name a few all command top dollar because there is always a demand for these records.  But that is not to say that some obscure bands or artists are precluded from being valuable, on the contrary, there may be an artist that you have never heard of and the record may be selling for thousands of dollars. 
LP Jacket, Inserts, Picture Sleeves

When issued, some records came with an added incentive and that is also collected and can add value to a record.  LP’s came with fantastic artwork, inner sleeves with liner notes, lyrics, posters, cut out and all these elements are included when establishing a resale price.  Again, the condition of these ‘extras’ must be taken into account when ascertaining the value of the record.  45rpm records came with picture sleeves and some of them are even more valuable than the record that they may hold.

The Year of Release

First pressings may be of more value than a reissue of the same record ten years later.  For instance, a Beatles record that was released in 1965 is of more value to a collector than a reissue that was released in 1980. 

The Record Label

Some record labels are also more collectible than others.  Old R & B or jazz on the record label Bluenote is generally worth more than if the same music and artist are released on another label.  Another example is Beatles’ records released on the Capitol record label as opposed to the Vee Jay label.  For instance, if you were to own the record “I Want To Hold Your Hand” on the Capitol label, it will generally be worth more than the same record on the Apple label (which was formed after the record was issued).  Certainly there are exceptions, but there are a lot of record labels that suffered from poor distribution and, quite frankly, there are not that many to be had.

Stereo vs. Mono

As a general statement, all 45’s manufactured by all record labels after 1970 were pressed in stereo.  But there were labels that issued records between 1957-1970 that were issued in both formats, and you would have to check the catalog number of the record to find out which one you may have.  Some mono versions may be worth more than there stereo counterparts, while some records in stereo may be worth more than mono; it all depends on the artist and label.

As we review this article, we see that there are many elements that can factor into ascertaining what a record may be worth.  We have covered the basics, there are more like picture discs, colored vinyl, promotional releases, misprints, why even the color of the record label may affect the price; but this is a good starting point.  One element we should highlight is what you get for a record can also be determined to who you are selling the record to, a dealer will probably give you only a portion of what the record may be worth, or you may be able to find a rare and valuable record at a garage sale for pennies on the dollar.  And that is the fun part for record collectors!

Music History - August 16th:  Elvis Presley Death

On August 16, 1977, at his Graceland home in Memphis, Elvis Presley took the book he'd been reading, Frank Adams' "The Scientific Search For The Face Of Jesus," and went into his bathroom.

"Don't fall asleep in there," said girlfriend Ginger Alden, knowing he had a habit of nodding off.

"Okay, I won't," he said. Ginger went back to sleep.

At 1:30 p.m. CST, Ginger awoke and saw Elvis was still gone. When knocking on the bathroom door produced no reply, she entered and found his lifeless body on the floor in front of the toilet.

 Alden called for Elvis associates Joe Esposito and Al Strada, who arrived and called the fire department. An ambulance was dispatched. Daughter Lisa Marie and father Vernon arrived in the bathroom, but Lisa Marie was quickly removed. Elvis was rushed to Baptist Memorial Hospital, where, after several attempts to revive him, he died at 3:30 p.m. CST.

His autopsy was performed at 7:00 p.m. The official coroner's report listed "cardiac arrhythmia" as the cause of Presley's death, but this was later admitted to be a ruse by the Presley family with the help of autopsy physicians to cover up the real cause of death: a cocktail of ten prescribed drugs, taken together in doses no doctor would ever prescribe.

The phrase "cardiac arrhythmia," in the context of the coroner's report, means little more than a stopped heart; the report initially tried to attribute the arrhythmia to cardiovascular disease, but Elvis' own personal physician has stated that Presley had no such chronic problems at the time. Most of Elvis' many health problems can and have been traced back to rampant abuse of prescription drugs.

The painkillers Morphine and Demerol. Chloropheniramine, an antihistamine. The tranquilizers Placidyl and Vailum. Finally, four drugs were found in "significant" quantities: Codeine, an opiate, Ethinamate, largely prescribed at the time as a "sleeping pill," Quaaludes, and a barbituate, or depressant, that has never been identified. It has also been rumored that Diazepam, Amytal, Nembutal, Carbrital, Sinutab, Elavil, Avental, and Valmid were found in his system at death.

The reissued series of classic albums continues with the following Rory Gallagher albums released in chronological order from 1975 – 1982.  Albums include ‘Against The Grain’ (1975), ‘Calling Card’(1976), ‘Photo-Finish’ (1978), ‘Top Priority’(1979), and ‘Jinx’ (1982).
 
Picking up where Rory left off with the phenomenal ‘Irish Tour ‘74’ live album, the release of 1975’s  ‘Against The Grain’, found Rory at the top of his game and in sparkling form both in the studio and on stage. The next seven years saw the release of these five outstanding records.

Each reissue has been digitally re-mastered to stunning effect from the original ¼ inch tapes and features digitally restored original vinyl release album artwork, new booklet content and bonus tracks. All five albums will be released in the UK on October 1st for a limited period in deluxe digi-packaging.

Rory Gallagher was a musician like no other. He was, and still is, one of the world’s greatest guitarists, singers, song writers and live showmen. His music lives on through generations of guitarists including Slash, Joe Bonamassa, Brian May, Johnny Marr and The Edge; and also through his amazing catalogue including some of his finest works included in this collection of releases.

Each of the five studio albums are now re-released in digipack form, with restored artwork based on the original first release cover art. The audio has been re-mastered from the original ¼” inch tapes. Each album includes exclusive sleeve notes, album reviews and rare photographs.

"Continuing on from last year’s 40th Anniversary of Rory Gallagher's solo career, we’re pleased to present his next five solo albums from 1975-1982," says Daniel Gallagher, Rory’s Nephew and producer of the reissues. ‘Calling Card’ was originally released in 1976. This deluxe reissue features an interview with ‘Calling Card’ producer and Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover, plus the previously unreleased track ‘Where Was I Going To?’

‘Photo-Finish' was originally released in 1978. This deluxe reissue features an album review written by David Fricke in Circus magazine in 1980, plus two bonus tracks.

Top Priority was originally released in 1979. This deluxe reissue features a CREEM magazine album review from 1980, plus two bonus tracks ‘Hell Cat’ and ‘The Watcher’.

‘Jinx’ was originally released in 1982. The reissue boasts a review of the album originally published in Melody Maker, plus two bonus tracks ‘Nothin’ But The Devil’ and ‘Lonely Mile’.

also did some checking, there are 1,576,682 results found for the search term LP on eBay today, and this is a great indication of the past several days....lots of records for sale on the big vinyl machine, no wonder prices have come down.  If I am still up to speed, eBay charges listing fees, whether the records sell or not.  So why would anybody list some of the most common LPs if there are already hundreds of them already up for sale?  What makes their copy any better than the other 600?  ebay is doing just fine, thank you......

Metallica, Carlos Santana, Flaming Lips (among others) Featured On New Deep Purple Tribute Album

The tribute album called, 'Re-Machined: A Tribute to Machine Head', will see a wide selection of musicians covering the tracks on Deep Purple's epic 1972 album 'Machine Head.'

The album is scheduled for release on September 25th via Eagle Rock Entertainment.  For those who want an early and exclusive version of the album, Britain's Classic Rock magazine will release a 124-page fanpack magazine with the disc on September 4. Included are interviews with those involved and one of the last talks with Jon Lord.

GARY MOORE TO RELEASE HENDRIX TRIBUTE

Eagle Rock Entertainment has recently announced the September 25th release of the Gary Moore CD, DVD and Blu-ray title 'Blues For Jimi.'
 
This release captures a unique concert featuring Moore playing Jimi Hendrix tracks, including such classics as “Purple Haze,” “Foxy Lady,” “The Wind Cries Mary,” “Hey Joe,” “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” and many more. Filmed at the London Hippodrome on October 25, 2007, it was part of the launch for the Jimi Hendrix “Live At Monterey” program.

At the end of the night, Gary was joined by Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox of the Jimi Hendrix Experience for three tracks.  The full line-up for this show was Gary Moore (guitar, vocals); Dave Bronze (bass); Darrin Mooney (drums) with Billy Cox (bass on tracks 9-11, and also vocals on the first two of those) and Mitch Mitchell (drums on tracks 9-11).

Both Gary Moore and Mitch Mitchell have passed since this concert took place, which makes the recording of this incredible night so special. Gary Moore was one of the finest British guitarists of all time and is one of the few players who could pay homage to Jimi Hendrix’s groundbreaking and truly distinctive guitar style. This is a stunning tribute from one master guitarist to another.

Kiss, Motley Crue Donate $100,000 to Aurora Victim Relief Fund

Kiss and Motley Crue are set to donate $100,000 to the Aurora Victim Relief Fund, in order to help those affected by the cinema shooting in Colorado last month.

Both Kiss and Motley Crue – who are currently on tour together in North America – pledged to donate the large sum of money during their show on Wednesday night (August 8) in Denver, near to where the shooting happened.

In a written statement, Paul Stanley of KISS and Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue said that they hoped their gesture would encourage other people to give money to those affected by the disaster.

Alligator Records are set to reissue Professor Longhair’s legendary LP 'Crawfish Fiesta' on October 16. The classic album, recorded just months prior to Longhair’s passing in 1979 and released shortly after in 1980, will see a retun to the vinyl format where it has been out of print for more than two decades.

The remastered version will also be available in MP3 format from all major download services. The beloved album, which, upon release, won the first-ever W.C. Handy Blues Album of the year award, features some of the best recorded performances of Fess’ long and storied career. Alligator’s remastered edition will also feature a cover of Percy Mayfield’s R&B nugget “River’s Invitation,” a previously unreleased rehearsal cut.

In addition to claiming the definitive verision of the New Orleans anthem “Big Chief,” Crawfish Festia is also highly regarded for its impeccable musicianship

Dave Stewart New Album Release

Eurythmics star Dave Stewart will release his new album called 'The Ringmaster General,' on September 4th in the US and September 3 in Europe.

Dave Stewart holds a special place in his heart for Nashville. That's where the legendary British singer, songwriter and guitarist has now recorded two albums: 2011's critically praised The Blackbird Diaries and the forthcoming The Ringmaster General, which was produced by Stewart and Mike Bradford.

A potent and distinctive musical gumbo with rock, blues, country, rhythm & blues and psychedelia, The Ringmaster General was recorded and mixed by John McBride at the famed studio he owns with Martina McBride, Blackbird Studio. It features 13 new songs--including striking duets with Alison Krauss, Diane Birch and Joss Stone--as well as one sung with and co-written by Jessie Baylin. The blistering guitar skills of Orianthi are featured as well. As with The Blackbird Diaries, Stewart is backed by some of the finest musicians in Nashville including: guitarist Tom Bukovac, drummer Chad Cromwell, bassist Michael Rhodes, steel guitarist Dan Dugmore and Mike Rojas on piano.

Says Stewart: "Well to me Nashville has that electric music energy feeling that you get when you arrive in certain cities or towns like Kingston, Jamaica and Havana in Cuba, except Nashville also has the feeling of being in the heart of a huge country (which it is) and it feels kinda like coming home."

He elaborates: "But it's mainly about the people I work and play with there. I've been so fortunate as to have landed in the arms of the McBrides and becoming part of an extended family. John McBride and I share the same crazy passion for sound and all the guys in the band I record with (and the girls) are up for that wild adventure I like to bring in the studio. All the musicians know I'm going to do lots of different experiments in songwriting and performance and they also know that I don't know what it's gonna be yet so it makes for an interesting time, a white knuckle ride, and a wild party of sound."

Stewart's love for Nashville is captured in the documentary The Blackbird Diaries And The Ringmaster General. The film will premiere at a VIP event Wednesday, August 22 VIP at Nashville's Belcourt Theatre, with a limited number of general admission tickets to be made available to the public: www.belcourt.org.

Neal Schon Solo Album Release

Journey guitarist Neal Schon is scheduled to release his new solo album, 'The Calling,' on October 22nd in the UK and October 23rd in the US.

Produced by and featuring Schon on all guitars and bass, 'The Calling' reunites Schon with former Journey bandmate, Steve Smith, who lends his drum talents to all 12 tracks on the new album.

Schon set up shop at Berkeley's famed Fantasy Studios during a break from Journey's busy touring schedule and recorded the album, completely from scratch, in just four days. After overdubbing multiple guitar and bass parts, Schon recruited two keyboard masters to flesh out the music. Igor Len, an accomplished classical, jazz and film composer who had previously collaborated with Schon, is featured on acoustic piano throughout The Calling album.

Special guest Jan Hammer (Jeff Beck, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miami Vice soundtrack) recorded Moog synthesizer solos on two tracks – Fifty Six and Tumbleweeds. Recently, Schon teamed up with Dan Barnett (Journey: Live In Manila) to produce the video for the first single and title track from The Calling.
