LEGACY RECORDINGS RELEASING HEART'S FANATIC

Fanatic, Heart's 14th studio album, arrives Tuesday, October 2 (a day late, sorry folks!). The group's second full-length studio album for Legacy, Fanatic premieres 10 new essential performances from sisters Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson on songs including "Fanatic," "Dear Old America," "Walkin' Good" (featuring Sarah McLachlan), "Skin and Bones," "Million Miles," "Pennsylvania," "Mashallah," "Rock Deep (Vancouver)," "59 Crunch," and "Corduroy Road."

The first album of new music from Ann and Nancy Wilson since 2010's Red Velvet Car had its Top 10 debut in 2010,Fanatic was recorded in hotel rooms and studios up and down the West Coast, with Grammy-winning producer Ben Mink back at the helm with the Wilson sisters drawing from their own lives and personal experiences as inspiration for their music. "Dear Old America" comes from memories of a military household and is written from the point of view of their father, a Marine Corps officer, returning from war ("When I get home, I'm going to own this town/Shine this medal/Wear that crown…."); "Rock Deep (Vancouver)" harkens back to the city where Dreamboat Annie was written; and "Walkin' Good" (a duet with Vancouver resident Sarah McLachlan) captures the joy of finding new life in a new love.

The title song is a celebration of the Wilson's life spirit: Ann and Nancy are fanatics about love, art, truth, and the belief that they can do anything together they set their minds to. Fans looking for a first taste of Fanatic can check out the title track on YouTube.

"What a crazy year we are having," said Ann Wilson. "Our box set, Strange Euphoria, and our book, Kicking and Dreaming, each tell the story of our lives so far, personally and musically. Our new album, Fanatic, tells our story as it is now and brings it all up-to-the-minute. What a thrill to have worked with both Charles Cross and Ben Mink respectively on these, and of course to touch the musical magic Nancy and I have always shared together. Anybody want to RAWK??"

Released in 2010, Fanatic's predecessor, Red Velvet Car (the first new studio album in six years from the groundbreaking Seattle-based band) entered the Billboard 200 best-selling album charts at #10, becoming the seventh Top 10 album of Heart's career. Heart's critically-acclaimed first album for Legacy Recordings marked the return of Heart to the Sony Music Entertainment family, reaching #1 in sales on Amazon.com on Sunday, September 5.

On June 5, Epic Records/Legacy Recordings released Strange Euphoria, the first definitive career-spanning, multi-label boxed set retrospective chronicling the seminal American rock band Heart, personally curated by Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson.

A carefully-considered anthology of biggest hits and best-loved songs set alongside deep catalog treasures, rarities, demos and live performances, Strange Euphoria includes three compact discs and one DVD in a deluxe box.

Ann Wilson and her younger sister, Nancy Wilson, first showed the world that women can rock when their band Heart stormed the charts in the '70s with hits like "Crazy on You," "Magic Man," "Barracuda," "Straight On," "Even It Up," "Kick It Out" and many more. Not only did the Wilson sisters lead the band, they wrote the songs and played the instruments, making them the first women in rock to do so. Heart continued topping the charts through the '80s and into the '90s with huge hits like "These Dreams," "Alone," "Never," and a string of other hits that showcased the sisters' enormous talents as both musicians and singers. Along the way, Heart sold more than 35 million records, had 21 top 40 hits, sold out arenas worldwide, and profoundly influenced the sound and direction of American rock music while inspiring women (and guys too!) around the world to rock out in bands of their own.

Heart were 2008 recipients of VH1 Rock Honors, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Northwest Grammy Foundation, and received ASCAP's award for Excellence in Songwriting in 2009.

What's made Heart endure across four decades and 14 studio albums, from Dreamboat Annie (1976) through 2012's Strange Euphoria and Fanatic is simply the quality of the music and the Wilsons' deep connection to the emotions, psyches and experiences of their fans.

Heart will be touring throughout the summer and fall (June 29-November 17). Alejandro Escovedo and Shawn Colvin will be supporting in October and November respectively. This fall , Ann and Nancy Wilson will be awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (followed by a live concert webcast).

Benjamin Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie) — “Former Lives” pre-order

Other cities, other plans; different friends, different dreams; former loves, former lives. After fifteen years in Death Cab for Cutie, Ben Gibbard didn't make his first solo album in search of a new beginning; instead, it closes a door. "These songs span eight years, three relationships, living in two different places, drinking then not drinking" he says of the dozen tracks that comprise former lives. "They're a side story, not a new chapter." Still, what we keep for ourselves is often just as interesting as what we choose to share. Former lives is a gorgeous shadow anthology, the exuberant sound of one of our best songwriters finding his voice by experimenting with those of others.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 1, 2012

DEAR JERRY: In a box of miscellaneous records I found at a flea market is an unusual 78.

All it has for a title is "CNA," and that's it. No subtitle. No explanation. No clue. And I can't play 78s.

Under "CNA" is "Robert Lee McCoy, Blues Singer with Piano, Guitar, and Harmonica." The number (Bluebird 7440) makes it a 1930s issue.

The label on the other side is badly torn, and cannot be read.

My searching indicates CNA is mostly used for a Certified Nursing Assistant, an unlikely topic for a blues song.

Do you agree?
—Clark Warwick (via e-mail)

DEAR CLARK: Wholeheartedly, but it won't require the FBI or CIA to decode CNA.

Too bad you can't play 78 rpms, because listening to "CNA" would convince you it has nothing to do with health care workers.

Here are three lines that clearly identify what is an initialism for a legendary railroad:

My baby caught the Illinois Central, [and] changed over to the CNA Now she's gone, down that CNA railroad line You know that CNA will never be my friend

"CNA" is indeed by Robert Lee McCoy; however, this record is what is known as a split single, one with a totally different artist on each side.

The split single format has been around at least since 1900, and, like having a hole in the middle, is still in use by record companies today.

Just a few months ago, Rhino Records produced a single with "Respect" on both sides. Side One plays the original by Otis Redding, and Side Two has Aretha Franklin's famous version.

If the other label on your Bluebird disc were not damaged, you would know the flip is "Want to Woogie Some More," by Washboard Sam (nee Robert Brown).

Though released in 1938, playable copies, with undamaged labels on both sides, can often be found in online auctions, usually selling in the $100 range.

At the time of this recording, the Canadian National Railway Company, founded in 1918, was most often referred to as CNR, but CNA was also used. Since 1960, their abbreviation has been shortened to just CN.

The line is very much alive today, primarily hauling freight instead of passengers, and running coast (B.C.) to coast (N.S.) in Canada, and from the Northwest Territories to the Gulf of Mexico.

DEAR JERRY: I have a music loving friend who specializes in collecting obscure original versions of songs that later became big hits.

He just asked me if there is an earlier version of "Patches," one preceding Dickey Lee's 1962 hit.

I checked my "BMI Pop Hits (1940-1966)" book, and they show 1962 as the year Larry Kolber and Barry Mann wrote "Patches." So, it would have still been that same year even if someone else did record it first.

I told him I would look into it further, which means asking you for help.
—Sid Smotherman, Scottsbluff, Neb.

DEAR SID: Apparently one of the lesser-known originals, Jimmy Isle released "Patches," backed with "Put Your Arms Around Me Honey" (Everest 19383), 52 years ago this month. That is about two years before Dickey Lee's Top 10 smash — appropriately on Smash (S-1758).

In their Pop Record Reviews for the week of October 10, 1960, Billboard gave Jimmy Isle's "Patches" a three-star rating, meaning "Good Sales Potential," adding:

"Patches is a gal from Shantytown. It's a sad, melancholy tune, handled for okay results by Isle against nice guitar and chorus support."

As for the "BMI Pop Hits" book, it lists BMI member's songs according to when they became "Pop Hits," regardless of year written.

There is no connection to the Kolber-Mann song, but another "Patches," written by R. Dunbar and N. Johnson, provided hits for Clarence Carter (1970), Ray Griff (1970), and Jerry Reed (1981).

IZ ZAT SO? Jimmy Isle's "Patches" is what drew me to the Billboard Record Reviews, but that same week (Oct. 10, 1960) "Sheila," by Tommy Roe and the Satins (Judd 1022), also got three-stars and some positive comments:

"Roe has a good rockabilly quality, somewhat reminiscent of Buddy Holly. He handles this dedication to a chick well and has the support of a girl vocal group. Good sound."

Still, neither "Sheila" nor "Patches" clicked in 1960.

Nearly two years later (Sept. 1962), "Sheila" and "Patches" spent three weeks together in the Billboard Top 10.

This "Sheila" was a newly-recorded version by Tommy Roe (ABC-Paramount 10329) and this "Patches" is by Dickey Lee. "Sheila" peaked at No. 1 while "Patches" stalled at No. 6.

Northern Soul's Top 45 rpm Singer Frank Wilson Dies

Frank Wilson, who was from Houston, Texas, passed away on September 27th from prostate cancer.   His single "Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)" is one of the holy grails of 45 rpm record collecting.   A genuine copy (signed by Wilson) sold in 2009 for over $40,000!  It accurately reflects the dedication of Northern soul collectors, as demand for 60s soul rarities have sent prices spiralling skywards in recent years. Here's a condensed version of the story:

Shortly after he was hired at Motown, Wilson wrote and recorded the track with himself as the artist.  Approximately 250 demo 45s of the song were pressed and scheduled for release on December 23, 1965. However, the promos were done without Berry Gordy’s blessing.  Not going through proper channels was certainly frowned upon at Motown and Gordy, known for his tough management style, allegedly didn’t appreciate Wilson recording the track without his OK, so the demos were destroyed.  At least two, and maybe as many as five, copies survived, one of which fetched £25,742 in May 2009. One is believed to be owned by Berry Gordy himself. Due to its scarcity it remains one of the most collectable discs especially by followers of Northern soul.

Frank Wilson wrote or co-wrote a long list of hits, including "Love Child," "I'm Living in Shame," "Up the Ladder to the Roof," and "Stone Love" (Supremes); "All I Need" (Temptations); "Still Water Love" and "It's the Way Nature Planned It" (Four Tops); "Boogie Down," "Keep on Truckin'," and "Darling Come Back Home" (Eddie Kendricks); "You Made Me So Very Happy" (Brenda Holloway, Blood, Sweat & Tears); "Chained" (Marvin Gaye); and "Whole Lot of Shakin' in My Heart" (Smokey Robinson & the Miracles).

Wilson left Motown in 1976 and worked with the likes of Freda Payne, Lenny Williams and Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr. before becoming a born again Christian and entering the ministry. He also became an author including the books The Master Degree-Majoring in Your Marriage and Unmasking the Lone Ranger. In 2006, he returned to producing, working with John Legend on Each Day Gets Better.

Here are the Top 3 most valuable records:

1.  John Lennon & Yoko Ono - Double Fantasy (Geffen US Album, 1980) Autographed by Lennon five hours before Mark David Chapman assassinated him. $525,000.

2.  The Quarrymen - "That'll Be the Day"/"In Spite Of All The Danger" (UK 78 RPM, Acetate in plain sleeve, 1958) Only one copy made. $180,000

3.  The Beatles - Yesterday and Today (Capitol, US Album in 'butcher' sleeve, 1966) $38,500, though more typically prices range from $150-$7500

EMI and Apple note that the vinyl albums are pressed from the full 24-bit, 192KHz digital masters created in the 2009 remastering process, rather than the 16-bit masters used in production of the CDs, meaning the vinyl versions will be drawn from the full-spectrum source material.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 24, 2012

DEAR JERRY: Because "Breaking Bad" doesn't identify the music they use, someone once asked you to name the amusing Italian song heard in the Season 3 finale.

Now they've done it again, this time in what will be the last episode until mid-2013. As with the Italian tune, it's another unknown song with extremely fast singing.

This one is in English, and is playing while Walt and Todd are busy working in the lab. Because their activities are shown at double or triple speed, the rapid lyrics kind of fit what's going on.

Even IMDb lists only original music written specifically for the show, but nothing else.

Hope you can go two for two on "Breaking Bad."
—Andrea Parks, York, Pa.

DEAR ANDREA: You bring up the only criticism I've ever heard about "Breaking Bad," AMC's critically acclaimed and highly rated series. Meanwhile, until the producers and/or IMDb acknowledge the non-original music used, I will gladly handle the investigations (and maintain a high batting average).

Unlike the Italian tune we discussed last year, Quartetto Cetra's "Crapa Pelada (Testa Pelata)," one previously unknown outside Italy, the song you are asking about is quite familiar to oldies fans in America.

Titled "Goin' Down," it is by the Monkees, and is found on the flip side of their million-selling "Daydream Believer" (Colgems 66-1012).

All four Monkees, Michael Nesmith, Davy Jones, Mickey Dolenz, and Peter Tork, wrote and sing on "Goin' Down," though the lead vocalist is Dolenz.

As you say, Mickey's speedy singing is an ideal piece to accompany the fast-moving time-lapse sequence in "Breaking Bad."

Listen to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4lVAvuds8g

DEAR JERRY: Most albums come wrapped in plastic, which must be removed to get to the disc.

Quite often there are stickers on the wrap, which usually get tossed in the trash along with the plastic.

Now I'm having second thoughts. Should I start saving those stickers?
—Erik Berman, Bakersfield, Calif.

DEAR ERIK: Unless the stickers are obviously ones applied by the retailer, such as for pricing or inventory purposes, cutting them away from the shrink wrap and sliding them inside the LP cover would be a good idea.

Stickers, or anything else in the way of extras from the record pressing plant, pertaining specifically to that album, will always be worth saving. And there's no risk in doing so.

Other commonly used inserts include: photos; booklets; artist bios; lyrics sheets; custom inner-sleeves; bumper stickers; decals; postcards; games; and publicity flyers.

Many examples exist where having the extras significantly increases the value of the album, especially with the more collectible artists (Elvis, Beatles, etc.).

IZ ZAT SO? It is possible "What's Your Name" sat around unnoticed for so long because radio programmers didn't recognize the names Don (Trone) and Juan (Johnson).

They likely didn't know that "Juan" Johnson previously sang with the Genies, the doo-wop quartet who charted in 1959 with "Who's That Knocking" (Shad 5002).

It was all uphill from there, with the seller finally landing $22,268.68 for a record that was originally issued in 1964.

New David Bowie Picture Disc Celebrating 40th Anniversary Of ‘The Jean Genie’

On November 16, 2012, EMI will mark the 40th anniversary of ‘The Jean Genie’ with the third in a series of collectible 7” picture discs that celebrate the anniversary of the original release of David Bowie’s UK singles.  The b-side will have the audio from the recently-recovered BBC Top Of The Pops performance of ‘The Jean Genie’ from January 1973.  Originally issued in the UK via RCA on November 14, 1972, ‘The Jean Genie’ was the first single taken from his then still-to-be released album 'Aladdin Sane.'

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Chris Lawhorn Announces Charity Album Based Around Fugazi Samples

Chris Lawhorn will release his fifth album Fugazi Edits on October 30th on Case/Martingale Records. Fugazi Edits features 22 tracks, which were pieced together using excerpts from every song in the band Fugazi's discography.

The album's been in the works for almost two years. It's entirely instrumental and combines over 100 Fugazi samples with a variety of effects. Ian Mackaye (from the band and their label Dischord) has authorized the album's release. And, the profit from will be donated to a pair of charities—one that works with senior citizens in Washington, D.C. and another that provides aid globally to folks impacted by disaster and civil unrest.

Lawhorn started the Case/Martingale label in 1996, while playing drums for the (admittedly Fugazi-influenced) band Cataract Falls. A decade of disastrous tours and middling solo albums followed. Along the way, he became the staff DJ at a spring break company—playing for drunk, college students on South Padre Island each March—and recorded the rap album Pole Position.

This gradual switch from rocking to beat-making isn't exceptionally unique. But, it led to an 18 month stint as the resident DJ for Marie Claire magazine. When that concluded, Lawhorn began work on Fugazi Edits—in an attempt to make something that employed both the musical influences of his youth and his love of cutting up tracks and reassembling them.

Interested folks can visit www.chrislawhorn.com to check out samples from the album, the artwork, and so on.

The CD release will be limited to 1,000 copies and followed by a digital release on iTunes, Amazon, etc.

CVR Blog Spin Clean® Record Washer System Review

OK, I'll admit it. I am a vinyl record nut, but I can live with it. The resurgence in the sale of vinyl records is not only about people who collect vinyl, it's also about a love of the format and a truer musical sound experience.

Some may scoff at this concept, saying that vinyl records wear out, damage easily and require too much time to clean. However, this is not the case, as we will learn. I've always maintained that cleaning vinyl records can be accomplished with some mild soap and water and a good carbon fiber brush. That might help, but the deep down grime at the bottom of the grooves will still be on the records and certainly audible.

Then I learned about and tried the Spin Clean® Record Washer System.

After contacting the folks at Spin Clean®, they were kind enough to send the CVR Blog a unit to review. I opened the box and was surprised at the simplicity of the unit. The directions were clear cut and the set up and cleaning process took less than five minutes; certainly off to a good start.

The Spin-Clean System Complete Kit comes with:

* Record Washer and Lid
* 4 ounce bottle of Record Cleaning Concentrate
* 32 ounce bottle of Record Cleaning Concentrate
* 2 pair of Washer Brushes MKII
* 1 pair of Washer Rollers MKII
* 7 washable Drying Cloths
* Instructions (in the lid)

The instructions suggested to use distilled water (which I did) rather than ordinary tap water to wash your vinyl LP records. Distilled water can usually be purchased from a local grocery store and costs about a dollar. The product also cleans both sides of the record simultaneously, with the drying cloths used to dry and shine the LPs.

What I wanted to see is if I could actually hear the difference. I pulled out an old dusty Jim Croce album and played the song "Time In A Bottle." I wanted a slower cut and a quieter song, so I could test the Spin Clean® product with not only my eyes, but my ears. I played the song once before cleaning it and one could say that the cut was ruined by all the clicks and pops, it sounded terrible. Then, I clean the record using the Spin Clean® Record Washer System.

Using my see through 'plastic 'deli gloves,' (this is something I have used for years, it is a way to handle vinyl records without worrying about getting fingerprints on the records), I placed the 'dirty' record in the basin as instructed. Again, following the precise directions, I turned the record three times, both clockwise and counter clockwise. I then pulled the wet record out of the basin and dried it with the drying towels in a clockwise circular motion as described in the instructions.

I then carefully placed the cleaned LP on my turntable and placed the needle down on the song again. What I heard was a more cleaner version of the song, but what amazed me the most is what I didn't hear. There was a definite decrease in the crackling, hissing and pops and miscellaneous clutter that I heard before I cleaned the record. I was sold on the product right away and went to their website www.spincleanrecordwasher.com  to gather more information. Here is what they had to say about their product:

The Spin Clean® Record Washer System's real effectiveness comes from its ability to impeccably clean both sides of any record simultaneously without using your turntable as part of the process. Your albums and singles will last longer and sound better than ever, while your turntable and stylus are saved from needless wear and tear.

The Spin Clean® Record Washer System has been one of the best value record washers since 1975. It is an extremely cost effective alternative, to all of the higher priced, automatic vacuum cleaner type machines. It uses a proprietary cleaning fluid that does not leave any build up or film on your records. It is also one of the few systems on the market that will clean albums, 45's and 78's. With the Spin-Clean system you mix the concentrated record cleaning solution with water in the clear reservoir base (small tank), The record stands vertically in the tray (as pictured), resting on adjustable rollers, as you rotate the record manually it passes through a set of two brushes that simultaneously deep cleans it on both sides. After you wash your records, you dry them off with a lint free cotton cloth. It's easy and anyone, even the most novice record collector, can handle the set up and cleaning process.

What is our secret weapon, however, is Spin-Clean® Record Washer MKII's special washer fluid. This special formula encapsulates the dirt that comes off the record from deep within the record grooves and sinks it to the bottom of the washer basin, so it is not re-deposited back on to your valuable LPs and 45s.

The CVR Blog wholeheartedly endorses the Spin Clean® Record Washer System, and I would recommend it as the perfect gift for any vinyl record lover. Additionally, because very little of the cleaning solution is used, the four ounce bottle will clean hundreds of LPs. In the end, music lovers and vinyl record junkies will love the cleaner, crisper superior sound that is the end result, and after all, isn't that what it is all about?

Here are some other comments about the Spin Clean® Record Washer System

"...it's cheap and it really, really works...I cleaned some dirty, fingerprint-encrusted records, and when I removed them from the vat, all dirt and fingerprints were gone...not everyone wants to spend hundreds of bucks on a vacuum machine, and the Spin Clean got the job done." - Michael Fremer, Stereophile, February 2010

"I've discovered a new system that makes it easy and affordable for anyone to have cleaner and better-sounding records. It's the Spin-Clean Record Washer System MKII." - Goldmine magazine
