Golden Earring - Moontan - Vinyl Record (Import 2009)

This 1973 outing is the album that raised Golden Earring to an international level of popularity, primarily on the strength of the hit single and enduring radio favorite "Radar Love." However, there is much more to this album than just that hit. In many ways, Moontan is like a summation of everything the group had learned on their first three albums. It presents a similar combination of prog epics, heavy rockers, and songs that combine both elements, but everything is raised to a new level of inspiration and polish. It starts with a bang thanks to "Candy's Going Bad," a piece that starts off as a thunderous, pounding rocker but transforms midway into a bluesy instrumental mood piece. Other highlights include the hit single "Radar Love," a relentless rock tune with a left-field instrumental break in which tribal drums duel with a big band-style horn section, and "Just Like Vince Taylor," a guitar-slinging slice of boogie rock that pays tribute to the fallen rock idol of the title.

Wolvserpent - Perigaea Antahkarana (Purple) 2XLP

Available 9/17/13

Boise, Idaho duo WOLVSERPENT summon a deeply lush and powerful amalgamation of doom, dark-folk, drone, chamber music and black metal on their Relapse debut ‘Perigaea Antahkarana’. Shimmering tribal drone dances with epic blackened metal to create a sound much much bigger than its two human parts.

Simultaneously dark and beautiful, WOLVSERPENT’s sprawling Relapse debut gracefully blends stringed amplified instruments with a 21st century approach to composition to create a 4 part masterwork that is dark, emotional, menacing, cinematic, atmospheric, and heartbreakingly lovely.

Pressing Info:

First Press
900 x Grimace Purple Standard Gram
100 x Clear (do not request clear)
***2XLP version comes housed in a deluxe gatefold jacket and Includes a Free Digital Download of the Album***

Pre-Order Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin - Fly By Wire

The Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin Fly By Wire split color vinyl just arrived and it looks...well...just take a peek for yourself because we're speechless!

As great as the record looks, we can happily say the music is even better.

Recorded in the same attic as SSLYBY's beloved debut Broom, Fly By Wire contains many similarities to that album's lo-fi aesthetic while still providing a healthy dose of the band's infectious pop hooks.

Stream "Nightwater Girlfriend," "Harrison Ford," and "Young Presidents" here.

The album is available for pre-order on all of the following formats:
CD
Mailorder exclusive Split Red/White vinyl (limited to 800 copies)
Red tape (limited to 100 copies)
"Fly By Shire" T-Shirt+MP3 (printed on ultra-soft AA Tri-Blend Track shirts)
Bundles

And as a special bonus, 100 orders will randomly receive a SSLYBY fanzine containing illustrations inspired by the band's songs.

Pre-orders ship Sept. 6. In stores Sept. 17.

ARCHITECT MINE LIMITED EDITION 2LP

White vinyl is limited to 71 copies. Exclusive shirt-pack is limited to 24 copies. Black version limited to 195 copies. No reprints.

Architect's sixth full length album Mine constitutes an appreciable shift in direction compared to his previous works by adding compositional and instrumental innovations brand new to this project. Supported by well-respected artists such as Ben Lukas Boysen a.k.a. Hecq, guitarist and cellist Felix Gerlach, Dejan Samardzic (dsx), legendary producer, engineer and remixer Paul Kendall (Depeche Mode, Nitzer Ebb, Erasure, Recoil), Canadian musician and sound designer Comaduster and Hungarian vocalist Emese Arvai-Illes (Black Nail Cabaret), Architect marches to no one's beat but his own, expanding ambitious electronica with comprehensive down-tempo song structures. Moderate yet decisive beats and precise keyboard and string arrangements build the foundation for Emese's exceptional voice, transmitting suspense, depth and sinister beauty with perfectly fitting lyrics.

Depending on how and when you listen, this atmospheric release can fill you with menace and sadness, or send you into a deep reverie. Uncompromising, muscular and powerful, the music of Mine is also full of subtle touches and a supple sense of rhythm. Highly recommended for devotees of Moderat, Recoil or House of Black Lanterns - this album will be 'yours' for sure.

Zoltan - Psychomania - a tribute to John Cameron (vinyl)

Zoltan follow up their 2012 Cineploit album release First Stage Zoltan by honouring a classic British cult movie from the 1970's, 'Psychomania!'.

Available as a 12" mini-LP - on green splatter vinyl and with innersleeves featuring movie stills - with one side of music and another side containing several locked grooves from the movie, this is strictly limited to 350 copies globally

Sly & The Family Stone - Higher!

Released in celebration of Sly Stone's 70th birthday, Higher! is the first career-spanning anthology to celebrate the musician whose funk has influenced everyone from Miles Davis and Michael Jackson to Public Enemy and the Roots. This 8LP collection offers the chance to experience the songs you know and love but often in alternate versions, including mono singles, demos, instrumental tracks, live concert and television recordings, and more. The box set features 77 tracks, 17 of them previously unreleased.

These tracks are supplemented by a painstakingly detailed 104-page book featuring a liner notes essay, a beautifully-illustrated timeline of Sly's career, track-by-track annotations, rare and uncirculated photography, 45 rpm label and picture sleeve repros, eye-popping vintage concert posters and ticket stubs from Sly & The Family Stone shows, and more. Compiled by Dutch authorities Edwin & Arno Konings, the track-by-track annotations contain excerpts from Thank You, the Koningses' own forthcoming biography of Sly & The Family Stone. Faith No More - Album Of The Year

The last album of Faith No More was a worthy goodbye to millions of fans worldwide. Having a new guitarist in their ranks, the band recorded 12 fresh songs in the comfort of bassist Billy Gould's home studio. These sessions produced two hits:  "Ashes To Ashes" and "Last Cup Of Sorrow". Straightforward and concise, the album sequence takes no prisoners and delivers an outstanding Faith No More experience.

At its release in 1997 Album Of The Year was pressed on LP in small quantities, making original vinyl copies very hard to find. With the reissue of Music On Vinyl, thousands of fans can again enjoy this album the way it should be heard - on wax! To stir up some attention we've thrown in a special first run of 2000 copies on GOLD vinyl – must be seen to be believed. Don't sleep on this one.
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • First 2000 copies pressed on GOLD coloured vinyl and hand numbered. Afterwards available on black.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 19, 2013

DEAR JERRY: After reading your recent piece about "Address Unknown," by an outfit from the Bay State (Massachusetts) named the Baystaters, I became curious as to whether or not any groups, named after their state's nickname, actually had hits.

I realize most nicknames don't lend themselves to being a recording group name, such as the Grand Canyon State.
—Yolanda Cisneros, Northhampton, Mass.

DEAR YOLANDA: Some states have more than one nickname, but we'll try to match up only with commonly used names.

Framing the question as you have — a group from a state whose nickname is also their name, and with at least one hit to their credit — I find only three that qualify.

The most obvious example is from your neighbor to the south, Connecticut, the Nutmeg State.

The Nutmegs, from New Haven, created an R&B classic in 1955 with "Story Untold."

Hailing from Arcadia, Ind., not far from Indianapolis, came the Hoosier Hot Shots. This bunch from the Hoosier State had numerous hits in the 1930s and '40s, and were even featured in several western movies. The members changed along the way, but they continued to perform into the '70s.

If you suspected the Mormon Tabernacle Choir were from the Mormon State (Utah), you'd be right. In 1959 their "Battle Hymn of the Republic" marched right into the Top 15.

DEAR JERRY: One of my early rock records is "Right Around the Corner," by Boyd Bennett.

I noticed the writing credits simply state "Singleton-McCoy," with no first names. When dealing with fairly common names like these, why wouldn't they use their given names. It's not like there isn't enough room on the label.

Any chance they are Shelby Singleton and Van McCoy?
—Freeman Taylor, Chicago

DEAR FREEMAN: Not a bad guess since Shelby and Van have individually written, arranged, and produced many hit songs, but they did not collaborate on "Right Around the Corner," or anything else for that matter.

The true tunesmith tandem responsible for "Right Around the Corner" is Charlie "Hoss" Singleton and Rose Marie McCoy. Their prolific eight-year partnership began in 1954 with "Hurts Me to My Heart," a No. 1 hit for Faye Adams.

Though "Right Around the Corner" never made much of a splash chartwise, three excellent versions came out in 1956.

The 5 Royales had the first recording (King 4869), made for the Race or R&B market. The same company then had Boyd Bennett wax it for their country and rock customers (King 4874). That may seem strange now, but for one label to have the original issue, plus one or more cover records, was not uncommon then. Both King singles came out in January, only a few days apart.

Several months later, an RCA Victor group, one unfortunately saddled with the name The Country Gentlemen, recorded their R&R version of "Right Around the Corner." Coupled with the Wheels' doo-wop ballad, "My Heart's Desire," the RCA single came out in December.

The Country Gentlemen's smooth group harmony was first-rate, and either or both sides could have been pop-rock hits, but not without a name change.

Country music programmers and juke box operators had no interest in pop music similar to the Crew-Cuts, and pop-rock music prospects didn't bother to audition a new country release, especially by an unknown act.

Billboard even took note of the contradiction. In their Dec. 29, 1956 Reviews of New Pop Records, they say: "These gentlemen, who make it clear they are NOT from the country, cover a couple of R&B tunes that have yet to happen in their original versions [i.e., 5 Royales and Wheels]. Good sound."

If the company or the group didn't want to change the name, they should have at least put something like this on the label:

The Country Gentleman (They May Be Gentlemen, But This Is Not Country!)

IZ ZAT SO? The average person might not recognize the names Charlie Singleton and Rose Marie McCoy, but they would surely recognize some of their 1,800 compositions, some written individually and some together.

Any of these BMI Award Winning Songs sound familiar (best-selling version noted)?

"Don't Be Angry" (Nappy Brown); "Don't Forbid Me" (Pat Boone); "Gabbin' Blues" (Big Maybelle with Rose Marie McCoy); "Hurts Me to My Heart" (Faye Adams); "I Beg of You" (Elvis Presley); "If I May" (Nat King Cole); "It's Gonna Work Out Fine" (Ike & Tina Turner); "Just As Much As Ever" (Bobby Vinton); "Lady" (Jack Jones); "Mambo Baby" (Ruth Brown); "Spanish Eyes" (Elvis Presley, Al Martino); "Strangers in the Night" (Frank Sinatra); "The Wheel of Hurt" (Margaret Whiting); and "Trying to Get to You" (Elvis Presley).

"The rock music group Grateful Dead is scheduled to perform at a 'potluck picnic' Sunday, sponsored by the Springfield Creamery." Eugene Register-Guard A "rock picnic." The Field Trip. Kesey's Creamery. August 27, 1972. The Springfield Creamery Benefit. Call it what you will, the sun was beating down hard and bright on that fateful day in Veneta, Oregon when the Grateful Dead heeded Ken Kesey's call to help save the family Creamery. The 100-degree and rising temperatures did not deter the band who were still riding high from their adventures across the pond. It did not discourage filmmakers John Norris, Phil DeGuere, and Sam Field who gained entry into the Dead's tight-knit world with their promise to capture the culture and integrity of the scene. And it certainly didn't inhibit the estimated 20,000 Dead Heads who could not believe their, well, pot...luck.

In fact, this blistering day turned out to be a near-perfect little piece of the Grateful Dead experience and it is with great pleasure, that 41 years later we can present Sunshine Daydream to you the way it was meant to be heard. Cut from the flawlessly preserved 16-track master, this 180-gram LP set of the "most requested" and "most revered" Dead show of all time promises to transport you back to the epic scene with definitive versions of the band's most beloved songs like "Bertha," "China>Rider," "Playing In The Band,""Greatest Story Ever Told,""Dark Star," and "Sing Me Back Home."

Nonesuch to Release Chris Thile’s Solo Bach Album on Vinyl September 24

Nonesuch Records released Bach: Sonatas and Partitas, Vol. 1, an album of Bach works recorded by mandolin virtuoso and MacArthur Fellow Chris Thile, to critical acclaim earlier this month. On September 24, 2013,  the vinyl edition will be released, comprising two works written for solo violin: Sonata No. 1 in G minor, BWV 1001, and Partita No. 1 in B minor, BWV 1002. The album, pressed on a single disc in 140-gram vinyl at Pallas in Diepholz, Germany, was produced by Thile’s friend, mentor, and frequent collaborator, the double bassist and composer Edgar Meyer, and is available to pre-order now in the  Nonesuch Store.

"There's the mandolin and then there's the mandolin when Chris Thile puts it to work," says NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday host Rachel Martin. "Chris Thile is stretching the limits of his instrument yet again, this time taking on Bach."

Thile explains his connection to the composer: “Bach was my first meaningful experience with—for lack of a better word—classical music. It was the second recording of Glenn Gould playing the Goldberg Variations. Gould plays with the kind of rhythmic integrity that I had previously only associated with non-classical music: music with a groove, with a pocket, that made you move. Gould was playing that music like my heroes play fiddle tunes. It humanized the whole thing for me and the heavens opened up and Bach came down. I started devouring all the Bach I could get my hands on.”

He continues, “This record to me is not about this iconic violin music played on the mandolin—like, ‘Oh boy, what fun, he’s playing a weird instrument!’ It's about Bach being one of the greatest musicians of all time, the solo violin music being some of his best work, and the mandolin having the potential to cast it in a new and hopefully interesting light."

Chris Thile, whom London’s Independent calls “the most remarkable mandolinist in the world,” is the founding member and lead vocalist of Punch Brothers. With broad influences including progressive bluegrass, classical, rock, and jazz, Thile transcends the borders of conventionally circumscribed genres, creating a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic. Thile is currently touring with Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, and Edgar Meyer, with whom he released last year’s The Goat Rodeo Sessions, which won two Grammys in 2013. He will perform works by Bach in solo recitals this fall; for details and tickets, visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.

As a soloist, Thile has released five previous albums. In 2011, Nonesuch Records released the Grammy–nominated Sleep with One Eye Open, an album of duets with guitarist Michael Daves.

Thile has also collaborated with a pantheon of musical innovators from multiple genres including Béla Fleck, Brad Mehldau, and Hilary Hahn. For more than 15 years, Thile played in the wildly popular band Nickel Creek, with which he released three albums, sold two million records, and was awarded a Grammy.

The New Yorker’s Alec Wilkinson said of Punch Brothers: “each musician has a deep command of his instrument … their technique and specific sensibilities have given Punch Brothers a sound that is strikingly coherent and singular, even if they haven’t yet settled on a genre … Each of the musicians … plays with grace, thoughtfulness, and force to a degree that is not duplicated by any band I am aware of.” Their latest album, the critically acclaimed Who’s Feeling Young Now?, was released in 2012 on Nonesuch Records.

To order Chris Thile's new Bach album on CD, MP3, and FLAC or to pre-order the vinyl edition, head to the Nonesuch Store where CD and vinyl orders include a download of the album.

LANTERN: Announce North American Tour Dates (8/25 - 9/19)

Rock 'N' Roll Rorschach Available Now via Sophomore Lounge Records

Watch the Music Video for "King of The Jungle"

Risen in the form of neon fume from Philadelphia side-street sewer lids come LANTERN. Orbiting around the songwriter duo of Zachary Devereux Fairbrother and Emily Robb (with the auxiliary addition of Montreal-import Christian Simmons on skins, also of Sheer Agony), Lantern is what rock 'n' roll was - loud, oozy, inspiring, perspiring, pummeling directly forward yet cloaked in the arcane.

Over the course of three years and an impressive handful of releases (six EPs and a 7", for those of you studying the horses) on labels like Bathetic and Night-People, Fairbrother & Robb have spawned a sonically relentless dark-force, twisting, perverting, and penetrating open ears with the scent of rotten, sultry soul, fanged fuzz & wah, boogie-downers, jungle night-moves, exercises in exorcism, black leather, and sex. Inspired by their idols: The Rolling Stones, Stooges, Bo Diddley, Cramps, MC5, Bowie, and all the originators of R&B and blues, Lantern are taking their own whack at the punching bag that is the great American folk tradition/condition/religion -- Rock 'N' Roll music.

This summer, they fold it in on itself with the release of their latest album (and 12" vinyl debut), Rock 'N' Roll Rorschach into the stinking hot heat of early July A.D. With the help of fellow Philly engineering magick-maker, Jeff Zeigler (Purling Hiss, Kurt Vile, Clockcleaner) behind the boards, the record marks a shift in sound from the blown-out hiss of lo-fidelity, four-track home recordings toward a more balanced and discernable breed of raw, unflinching power.

Lantern's sound melts genres together, rockabullying weirdo blues into a frenzy of fuzzed-up soloing and glammed-down dance beats, ultimately resulting in a mound of grooves garnering moves from the '80s/'90s garage-rock rattles of Dead Moon, Gibson Bros, and Billy Childish to the '60s/'70s pre-punk lore of Hasil Adkins, Flaming Groovies, or even The Velvet Underground. Rorschach is a testament to the age-old odyssey of rock 'n' roll, searching for something "advanced" (dare we say "futuristic?") in paying homage to its primal whims and primitive-earth foundation.

The true treasure is the exploration itself. And with that, what are you waiting for? Let the needle dig into this slab of cold-black wax, bang your head unconscious, and wake to realize that boogie is a fuckin' bodily instinct, not an activity choice.

Available 7/9/13 on Sophomore Lounge. Limited-Vinyl-Edition of 500 copies.

John Coltrane: The Complete Sun Ship Session – Mosaic Records (3 vinyl discs)

Coltrane completists, rejoice…..

John Coltrane: The Complete Sun Ship Session – Mosaic Records (3) 180gm stereo LP Box set MRLP 3005 -  [Recorded 8/26/65] – (Single LP issued on Impulse AS-9211, Aug. 1971) – Remixed from the original three-track masters ***½:

(John Coltrane-tenor sax; McCoy Tyner- piano; Jimmy Garrison- bass; Elvin Jones-drums)

Mosaic Records has always been the label that jazz completists seek out to obtain the definitive work of both legendary and lesser known (to the general public) artists, who have helped define the many jazz idioms that  collectors seek. Mosaic has sought out hidden and seemingly lost tapes of jazz giants, whereas other jazz labels have been satisfied to just issue readily available material.

Although the original issue on Impulse Records of John Coltrane’s Sun Ship consisted of only five master tracks, Mosaic Records was able to track down from the newly discovered original reels, the existence of unedited alternate takes, false starts, and edits, as well as recorded conversations between producer Bob Thiele, and Coltrane.

The Sun Ship session was recorded during 1965, among Coltrane’s most prolific years, at a time when his music was going through a period of extreme evolution. It was at the end of the period of his classic quartet comprised of the rhythm section of McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and the legendary Elvin Jones on drums. Sun Ship documents the group at the crescendo of their creative peak, just a matter of months before the departure of Tyner and Jones.

The music found on this session is powerful, sometimes chaotic, and at times somber, while seemingly prophetic, not knowing that Coltrane would pass away just two years later. Coltrane’s tenor invokes a spiritual tone, and is also wildly free, while Garrison and Jones swing with a loose groove. When Tyner has his moments he solos with thundering chords and commanding keyboard runs.

Hearing this music over thirty-five years later, the impact is no less stunning and contemporary in an avant-garde fashion today than it was when first recorded. The unedited tapes with both complete alternate takes, false starts, and inserts provide a window into Coltrane’s creative musical imagination. The short conversation snippets found throughout the LPs, though not containing any historical significance, remain interesting, as John can go from a humorous aside immediately into a burst of passionate playing like he was plugged into a high current electrical outlet.

Record 1, Side A, has three takes of “Dearly Beloved,” including a false start. Side B has the first two takes of “Attaining.” Record 2, Side A, continues with takes 3 & 4 of “Attaining” plus the first three takes of “Sun Ship.” Side B of the 2nd LP features the released version of “Sun Ship” as well as the album version of “Ascent” (Take 1). Jimmy Garrison’s extended bass solo is the lion’s share of this track, and is masterful.

The third LP has five takes of “Ascent,” on Side A, and they are incomplete versions and inserts. Side B is made up of a full alternate version of “Amen” and the same released 8:17 track from the Impulse issue.

The acoustics on these records is stunning with kudos going to Kevin Reeves for the remix, and to Kevin Gray for the remastering. Listening to Jimmy Garrison’s solo on “Ascent” makes you feel like he is just a few feet away…

The Complete Sun Ship Session box set is tailor-made for the hardcore John Coltrane enthusiast, a special prize for the chosen few who would savor every note recorded by John. Though the music presented here can sound jagged and dissonant to the general public, there remains an audience of Coltrane fans and young inspired musicians, who will find great pleasure in the exploratory, wildly creative emotional roller coaster ride that Coltrane leads as chief engineer. Limited to only 3500 box sets, it would be wise to contact Mosaic Records through their web site (www.mosaicrecords.com) to purchase your set before this issue sells out.
