Punk 45: Vol. 2 Underground Punk in UK 1977-1981 (Pre-Order) by Various Artists

Soul Jazz Records’ new Punk 45 album charts the rise of underground punk and post-punk in the UK from 1977-81. Punk 45: There is No Such Thing As Society. Get A Job, Get A Car, Get A Bed, Get Drunk! Underground Punk in the UK 1977-81 is the second volume in this series, released following on from Soul Jazz Records’ recent massive deluxe 400-page Punk 45s cover art book edited and compiled by Jon Savage (author of the seminal book on punk, England’s Dreaming) and Stuart Baker (founder of Soul Jazz Records). While the first album in this series, Punk 45: Kill The Hippies! Kill Yourself!, focused on underground punk in America, this album charts the rise of punk and post-punk in Britain in the years 1977-81. This new Punk 45 album features a collection of seminal, classic, obscure and rare punk and post-punk singles from the likes of The Art Attacks, The Mekons, TV Personalities, Swell Maps, and many more – charting the rise of independent music and Do It Yourself culture that exploded in Britain in the wake of punk.

PRONG - BEG TO DIFFER

Former New York club CBGB's soundman Tommy Victor founded Prong in 1987 as his outlet for sonic fury. Having their roots in the Thrash Metal and Hardcore scenes, Prong carved a niche for themselves – groovy, angry, massive;  just perfect mosh music. The trio wrecked stages and impressed audiences all over the world.

Their first album on a major label promised a bright future for industrial New York Hardcore Metal band Prong. Beg To Differ contains 10 hard-hitting tracks, of which the video for "Beg To Differ" got heavy rotation on MTV.

several months ago, we discovered a curious project called Duality - A New Experimental Vinyl Record That Merges Art And Music I have just been informed that the project has been completed, here is the info:

Infinite Religions is a series of experimental albums seeking new answers for old questions. Duality is Part One. Composed of two songs—"Life" and "Death" —Duality explores the cycle of our existence. When played in exact synchronicity, "Life" and "Death" manifest a third song called "Duality".

This limited-edition release of 99 records features artwork created as a visual accompaniment to the music. Duality will also be available on CD and as a digital download beginning January 21, 2014.

Bad Cop/Bad Cop 7" on FAT!

With catchy hooks, three part harmonies, and a drummer who fires her ‘guns’ harder than most of her male compatriots, Bad Cop/Bad Cop bring to mind the ‘90s heyday of chicks who actually rocked, from the snarl of The Distillers and synchronized vocals of Dance Hall Crashers to the guitar prowess of The Muffs and wry lyrics of Lunachicks. All hailing from different parts of the U.S., the foursome met in Los Angeles while playing in bands like Compton SF, The Radio Sweetheart, The D’Maggs, The City, Angry Amputees, and Cunt Sparrer. After playing at the “Lilith Bear” party during San Francisco Bear Pride 2013, they were supported and encouraged by an unlikely audience member: NOFX’s Fat Mike. “After our set, Mike approached and said he liked all the songs and that he was going to do something with our band. I almost crapped myself, and the rest is history,” says singer & guitarist Stacey Dee.
Look for their brand new EP, Boss Lady, out on Fat this Spring!

new releases from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

Hole - Celebrity Skin

The 4th album by Hole was a huge commercial achievement, successfully bridging the gap between Grunge and guitar Pop. The band revolving around Kurt Cobain's widow Courtney Love carved a niche for themselves as the seminal female fronted Grunge group.

Established in 1991, the band functioned as a cathartic outlet for enfant terrible Love, which makes their work incredibly compelling. Their 1998 album Celebrity Skin revealed a polished, energetic sound. Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins co-wrote 5 songs on this superb album, among which the title track and "Malibu", both of which were released as singles.

Although the album reached #9 on the Billboard Top 200, original vinyl copies of Celebrity Skin were made in small numbers – therefore making this very first reissue ever a much needed one for the fans!

DREAM THEATER - TRAIN OF THOUGHT

Originally only released on CD in 2003, a year after their mindblowing Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence [MOVLP781], Train Of Thought found Dream Theater back on the heavier and straight forward side of Prog Metal. From the album opener "As I Am" to the closer "In The Name Of God", this essential Dream Theater album thrusts forward like an unstoppable freight train. As Thom Jurek on Allmusic summarizes: 'This is hard, heavy progressive metal at its very best lyrically and musically.' We can only add +1 to that statement.
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl

  • Available on vinyl for the first time

YES - TIME AND A WORD

Archetypal Prog-rockers Yes formed in London in the late 1960s and gained vast popularity in the 1970s. Throughout the 1970s, Yes produced a stream of Gold and Platinum-selling albums, with Fragile and Close To The Edge considered fan favourites. Credit for their long-standing relevance lies with the distinctive vocals and lyrics of frontman Jon Anderson and the musicianship of the band's many members who have come and gone over the life of the group. Yes' second album Time And A Word solidified and broadened their sound, using an orchestra to good effect. This is the pinnacle of Prog!

SKELETONWITCH TO RELEASE LTD. ED. ‘SERPENTS UNLEASHED’ LP FOR CHARITY

Proceeds to aid animal shelters in band’s home state; tour with Amon Amarth begins Friday

SKELETONWITCH will soon release a limited-edition, hand-screened 180-gram vinyl edition of their acclaimed, Billboard-charting 2013 release “Serpents Unleashed,” of which 100% of the profits will be donated to two animal shelters in the band’s home state of Ohio — the Athens County Humane Society and Columbus’ Pets Without Parents. The members of Ohio’s most-loved heavy metal group have always been proud pet owners and are excited to have the opportunity to raise awareness and support for two no-kill organizations in their region.

Limited to a one-time-only pressing of 100 copies, the 180-gram black LP includes a hand-screened, hand-numbered jacket with exclusive artwork (pictured above) and a hand-screened dust sleeve. Mark your calendars, as the limited-edition LPs will go on sale on a first-come, first-serve basis exclusively via Skeletonwitch.com on Mon., Jan. 20 at 1:00 p.m. EST.

from our friends at PolyvinylRecords

Painted Palms - Forever

Whether living four states away or four blocks away, Reese Donohue and Christopher Prudhomme have always used the Internet -- at first out of necessity, later out of preference -- to collaborate on their songwriting.

Although the cousins grew up together in Lafayette, Louisiana, Donohue eventually moved to San Francisco, while Prudhomme stayed near New Orleans.

The newfound distance between them forced the pair to start sending song ideas back and forth via e-mail, a virtual exchange that quickly spawned Painted Palms' first release, Canopy, which was discovered by of Montreal's Kevin Barnes

Tours with of Montreal, Braids and STRFKR soon followed before Prudhomme moved out west to San Francisco, where Donohue still lived.

Yet, despite being in the same place for the first time in years, the duo continued writing songs apart from one another -- completing individual ideas in isolation and piecing them together through the computer.

And so, the songs that would eventually form their debut full-length Forever, came together as if the musicians were still separated by 2000 miles: Donohue sending a short, looping beat and Prudhomme replying with a vocal melody before continuing to bounce the track back and forth between them until it was complete, this time focusing on creating songs with classic pop structures.

As if crafted by tailors so skilled you can never find the seams, the songs on Forever provide no hint of their patchwork beginnings. Instead, the album is permeated with blissfully buoyant tracks like "Here It Comes" and "Forever," which glide smoothly on a foundation of instantly memorable melodies.

Elsewhere, touches of Painted Palms' most prominent influences -- '60s psych pop paired with modern electronic production -- are clearly evident, as on the dark and driving hooks that propel lead single "Spinning Signs."

Don't be fooled, though. Underneath the sunny sonic exterior, the lyrics on Forever exist in a different place, with much of the focus centered on how it feels to be caught between the external world and one’s own thoughts.

"Thinking about myself too much I can see that / I don't know what to be," sings Prudhomme on Forever's title cut.

And in that moment a hint of irony is apparent, for as much as the members of Painted Palms want to get out of their own heads, they're awfully good at writing songs that will immediately get stuck in yours.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 13, 2014

DEAR JERRY: When I read how Jackie Wilson's big break came because Billy Ward's Dominoes needed him to replace their lead singer, Clyde McPhatter, who was drafted, it got me thinking.

As an active duty veteran myself, I would like to know of other recording artists who somehow served this country, as many as you can come up with.

I have exhausted all the different ways there are to research this topic, including the web sites for the different branches of service, and there is very little info to be had.
—Nate Collingsworth, San Francisco

DEAR NATE: There is at least one other vet who is on the same frequency as you. Steve Lee, of Washington, Ind., asks essentially the same question.

As you have learned, other than finding a smattering of names, mostly celebrities from numerous walks of life, no one attempts to be comprehensive regarding musicians.

We will do it, starting right now.

That one of the most time-consuming lists we've ever prepared is one for you guys, and all the other music-loving veterans, makes it time well spent.

For openers, we have identified over 100 famous recording artists who served the military in some capacity. Most are musicians (singers and instrumentalists) but you will find a few whose niche was the spoken word, such as comedians or narrators. Each of these men made records during the 20th century. Not included are lesser-known session players or group members, other than a front man or a lead singer.

Here are the initialisms indicating which branch of the service applies:

ARNG (Army Reserve National Guard)
USA (U.S. Army)
USAAC (U.S. Army Air Corps)
USAAF (U.S. Army Air Force)
USAF (U.S. Air Force)
USCG (U.S. Coast Guard)
USMC (U.S. Marine Corps)

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

Record Store Day 2014 Is Officially Set for April 19th

The annual celebration of independent vinyl retailers returns for its seventh year. One would guess that the number of special releases will jump again this year, as both the record companies and the musicians know about the uptick in vinyl sales and can capitalize on the demand. Oh, and eBay gets a boost as well

ALICE COOPER - FROM THE INSIDE

Originally released in 1978, From The Inside is a concept album by Alice Cooper. His 11th studio album was inspired by his stay in a sanatorium to recover from his alcohol addiction. The singer – who once boasted he drank more than a case of beer a day to keep fit – had failed to overcome his drinking problem through private treatment and therefore felt it necessary to undergo a hospital program of treatment.

The characters in the songs on the LP were all based on actual people the shock rocker met in the sanatorium, while the album's cover image is a close-up of Alice Cooper's face printed on two doors that actually open up and lead into a hospital waiting room. The printed inner sleeve features an image of Cooper and the other 'inmates' running out of the sanatorium once they were released.

The album shows Alice Cooper at his most vulnerable, most notably in the record's hit single "How You Gonna See Me Now" (a power ballad even before the term was invented). If this album proves one thing, it's that Alice Cooper is one of the most underrated songwriters out there. Guest musicians include Toto's Steve Lukather and Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen.

HOWLIN' WOLF - MEMPHIS DAYS VOL.1

Howlin' Wolf's Memphis Days: The Definitive Collection, Vol. 1 collects some of his earliest recordings, as produced by Sam Phillips at his Memphis studio during several sessions in 1951 and '52. As soon as Phillips – best known for discovering and recording Elvis Presley – heard Howlin' Wolf perform on KWEM radio, he arranged for Chester Burnett (1910 – 1976) a.k.a. Howlin' Wolf to come to his studio and put down some tracks.

The 21 songs presented here show different aspects of Howlin' Wolf's still developing material. As a bonus for true collectors, the LP includes both sides of the original acetate recording taken from his very first recording session: "How Many More Years" backed with "Baby Ride With Me (Ridin' In The Moonlight)". Feast your ears with raw and dirty Blues from one of the most influential Blues musicians that ever walked the planet. You won't find any Howlin' Wolf recordings more vital than the 21 songs captured on Memphis Days: The Definitive Collection, Vol. 1.

THE METERS - FIRE ON THE BAYOU (expanded edition)

Hailing from the soggy streets of New Orleans, the Meters essentially invented the second line groove, influencing Funk music like no other artist (OK, aside from a singer by the name of James Brown). These cats are essentially one unified rhythm section, with expertly timed drum breaks, bass driven grooves, bluesy chicken scratch guitars and Southern sing along choruses.

Their 1975 album Fire On The Bayou established once again that The Meters were still the undisputed masters of Funk. Tracks like "Can You Do Without", "Out In The Country" and the title track have become staples in the Meters' songbook. This 2LP edition of Fire On The Bayou contains no less than 5 bonus tracks!
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Includes 5 bonus tracks: "Running Fast (single version)", "Keep On Marching","He Bite Me", "Mother's Love" and "Jambalaya"

BROTHERHOOD: The Complete Recordings (2-CD Set)

Right at the height of popularity for Paul Revere and the Raiders, the band’s core power trio of Phil “Fang” Volk (bass), Drake “The Kid” Levin (guitar) and Mike “Smitty” Smith (drums) left to pursue their own more ambitious musical goals. Subsequent lawsuits and a run of bad luck meant that the first, self-titled album by their new band, Brotherhood, would be delayed, and received little notice at the time. Yet, by mixing a wealth of socially-conscious original numbers with hard-rocking reinterpretations of tunes by the Mamas and the Papas and Joe South, Brotherhood was a band brimming with promise. Between 1968 and 1969 the band released two more albums, one under their own name, the other a third, wildly experimental record (Friend Sound / Joyride) that drew upon Cage, Zappa and Stockhausen (and acid) for its influences. Bringing together music that has been out of print for over 40 years and never available on CD until now, Brotherhood: The Complete Recordings includes all three albums the group cut for RCA on two CDs, plus a definitive history of the band by Bill Kopp, based on extensive research and a lengthy interview with Phil Volk, who contributes a note of his own. Remastered by Vic Anesini at Battery Studios in NYC…one of the great lost bands of the late ‘60s!

Little Big League 'These Are Good People' Gets Second Pressing

In the Fall of 2011, Michelle Zauner and Kevin O'Halloran (previously of Post Post) joined forces with Ian Dykstra (Titus Andronicus) and Deven Craige (Strand of Oaks) to form Little Big League. Shortly thereafter the band recorded their debut 7". Released in April of 2012, the two songs offered a glimpse into the band's promising future, which after months of writing and playing live took solid form in their debut LP These Are Good People.

The band's debt to 90s indie guitar rock is respectfully paid while Zauner's gorgeously unique vocal stylings and striking lyrical imagery add to the album's dark atmosphere. There is a level of tension and impending danger built, both lyrically and musically, that revels in the vulnerability of us all. These Are Good People is an album about coming of age, loss, and the overwhelming acceptance of reality over a failed romanticism. Due out this Summer on Tiny Engines, the album is a stunning indie rock debut from the Philadelphia quartet.

Second Pressing:

100 Transparent Red
120 Opaque Purple Aster
130 Opaque Goldfish Orange

Cartel's 'The Ransom' On Colored Vinyl

Official vinyl reissue of the professional debut from Atlanta pop punk band Cartel.

The Ransom EP features some of the band's most honest and pure material, representing the cornerstone of their ten year career (and counting) . Since the release of The Ransom by The Militia Group in 2004, Cartel has released four full length albums and toured all corners of the globe. Commenting on the band's growth after the release of The Ransom, singer Will Pugh said, "it was that youthful exuberance that spawned the most exciting period of our career".

Most recently, Cartel self-released their fourth studio album Collider, proving that the momentum that The Ransom started has yet to come to a halt.

This limited vinyl pressing features:
  • Custom envelope style jacket with full EP lyrics printing on the inside
  • 45 RPM 12" record on splatter, money green, or clear vinyl
  • Printed insert with message from Will Pugh thanking fans for their continued support
