The Standells are one of the most successful of all garage rock bands, with their signature song "Dirty Water" having been a huge nationwide hit in the sultry summer of 1966! True fathers of punk rock, they were touring later that year to support the success of their hit record when they were professionally captured on tape opening up for the Beach Boys at a University of Michigan performance as they served up a raucous, raw live helping of their most famous record—now featured on this limited edition that puts you as close to a mid-’60s frat fuzz party as you can get! “Dirty Water” is a tireless anthem, a song for the hip-and-happening whose legacy shines in this rare recording. Also includes “Twitchin’,” a previously unissued 1963 instrumental from the group’s earliest days, predating their first record. Plus, recollections about both recordings from original member Larry Tamblyn, housed in a picture sleeve featuring rare photos that evokes the look and feel of 1966. The Trashmen - Mean Woman Blues / Big Boss Man Live at the Whiskey a Go-Go

7" single • $8.98

Regularly packing regional Midwest venues with their incendiary live shows, The Trashmen's pal Mike Jann rightly concluded that these performances needed to be documented for posterity. Bringing his portable reel-to-reel tape recorder to Minneapolis’ St. Paul’s Whiskey A Go-Go, Jann captured the two previously unreleased performances in August 1966. Before a hometown crowd, The Trashmen threw down the bird dance beat with an authority born of road-hardened chops. No Pro-Tools, no Autotune, no overdubs: just real, writhing rock coming at you at a 1000 miles per hour.

The Surfaris - Wipe Out / Surfer Joe

7" single • $8.98

The Surfaris’ seminal 1963 smash “Wipe Out” with a new 1963-styled picture sleeve includies liner notes showcasing a recent interview with original rhythm guitarist Bob Berryhill. Both “Wipe Out” and the flip-side anthem “Surfer Joe” are in their original long versions, reproduced on the original Dot label and pressed in red vinyl!

The Yardbirds - Ha Ha Said The Clown b/w Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor

7" single • $8.98

"Ha Ha Said The Clown" b/w "Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor" was released as a U.S. single in July 1967 prior to the Yardbirds' final studio album Little Games, which followed one month later. Produced by Mickie Most, the A-side was a cover of a Tony Hazzard song that had already been a hit for Manfred Mann. The flip side is another story altogether! "Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor," a Jim McCarty-Jimmy Page original, is an explosive song with a driving, martial pace. It features a breakout performance from Page, marking his first use of a bow on a recording (listen for the unmistakable bowing solo in the bridge).

Record Store Day is upon us (you will see a theme here) and I cannot think of a better day for vinyl collectors. But, although I fully support RSD, they do need to do something about the glut of releases that are done just for the money; not to mention that these 'special releases' - supposed to be only available at record stores around the world, are already showing up on eBay - a day BEFORE the big event.  A quick check of eBay shows 251 results for record store day 2014.  I am not going to ramble on about all the issues with RSD, it is great for vinyl and the record stores.  That said - please support your local record store!!

AEROSMITH - DRAW THE LINE (RSD 2014)

Draw the Line is the fifth album by American hard rock band Aerosmith, released December 1, 1977. It was recorded in an abandoned convent near New York City, rented out for that purpose. The portrait of the band was drawn by the celebrity caricaturist Al Hirschfeld. Kerrang! magazine listed the album at #37 among the "100 Greatest Heavy Metal Albums of All Time."

ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND - SELECTIONS FROM PLAY ALL NIGHT (RSD 2014)

Play All Night: Live At the Beacon Theatre consists of performances captured on March 10 & 11 in 1992. This album has been produced by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Warren Haynes from original recordings overseen by long-time Allmans producer, the late Tom Dowd.

The set list retains the uniformity espoused by the group's deceased founder, guitarist Duane Allman, allowing the group to move effortlessly from one familiar number ("Statesboro Blues") to another ("You Don't Love Me") and concentrate on improvisation to render the numbers fresh.

MGMT - CONGRATULATIONS (RSD 2014)

Congratulations is the second major label studio album by American psychedelic rock band MGMT, released on April 13, 2010. The album is a departure from the Synth Pop style that first brought the band acclaim on their major label debut, Oracular Spectacular, and features a more progressive, guitar-driven sound.

ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK - KING KONG (RSD 2014)

King Kong is a classic pre-WW2 American fantasy monster/adventure starring Fay Wray, Bruce Cabot and Robert Armstrong, and opened in New York City on March 2, 1933 to rave reviews. The film tells of a gigantic, island-dwelling ape called Kong who dies in an attempt to possess a beautiful young woman. Kong is distinguished for its stop-motion animation by Willis O'Brien and its musical score by Max Steiner. In 1991, it was deemed "culturally, historically and aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. SHOCKING BLUE - SEND ME A POSTCARD (RSD 2014)

Shocking Blue was a Dutch rock band from The Hague, the Netherlands, formed in 1967. In 1969 and 1970, the group enjoyed a worldwide chart success with "Venus", followed by several other hit singles like "Send Me a Postcard" (released in 1968/69). DEAR JERRY: I have been pleasantly surprised several times when someone primarily known as an instrumentalist suddenly displayed a good singing voice.

Boots "Yakety Sax" Randolph, legendary trumpeter Al Hirt, and clarinetist Mr. Acker Bilk are three that come to mind; however, none of their vocals were hits.

Is there an established instrumentalist who really scored with a vocal?

DEAR EDDIE: The ultimate example of an instrumentalist who scored big time with a vocal is when, after 23 consecutive Mexican flavored instrumental hits, Herb Alpert sang "This Guy's in Love with You."

When his vocal reached No. 1, in June 1968, he became, and still is, the only entertainer ever to top the Pop charts with both an instrumental ("Taste of Honey," 1965) and a vocal ("This Guy's in Love with You").

For those who pointed out that "Taste of Honey" was No. 1 on Cash Box but not on Billboard, Herb responded with "Rise," an instrumental that both magazines ranked No. 1 (October 1979). "Rise" also spent four weeks at No. 1 on both charts, thoroughly negating the need for an asterisk.


DEAR JERRY: I read your story of when Elvis and Rick Nelson each had 17 different songs on the charts in one calendar year.

I know that all 17 of Presley's hits were on RCA Victor (1956), and Rick's were pretty much evenly split between Imperial and Decca (1963).

Fascinating as this info is, what intrigues me now is what happened in 1964 in this regard.

How many songs charted for the Beatles, for all labels combined as well as for just Capitol, their official U.S. label then?

I would like to see a listing similar to the one you did for Rick.

Having 29 songs on the charts in one year is unimaginable, but that was Beatlemania.

Of those, 14 came from Capitol U.S., and the other 15 are from these companies: Vee Jay/Tollie (8); Swan (2); Capitol of Canada (2); MGM (2); and Atco (1).

Since Tollie was a subsidiary of Vee Jay Records, their totals are combined.

Beginning in the summer of '64, all of the non-Capitol releases had run their course, and once those recordings belonged to Capitol, they quickly appeared on Capitol singles and LPs.

Almost immediately, the number of chart hits for the Beatles began to resemble those of many other popular artists.

The post-'64 totals are: 1965 (13); 1966 (8); 1967 (6); 1968 (4); 1969 (4); and 1970 (3).


IZ ZAT SO? For a different perspective on the 29 charted Beatles tunes in one year, consider that many hugely successfully artists didn't have 29 U.S. chart records in their entire career.
