SOUNDTRACK (OST) - THE MAZE RUNNER

About the film: when Thomas wakes up trapped in a massive maze with a group of other boys, he has no memory of the outside world other than strange dreams about a mysterious organization known as W.C.K.D. Only by piecing together fragments of his past with clues he discovers in the maze can Thomas hope to uncover his true purpose and a way to escape. In cinemas worldwide Sep/Oct 2014.

The soundtrack for The Maze Runner features a score by John Paesano, an American film composer and conductor. Paesano studied classical music with composition at the Conservatoire de Paris. In 2012 he was honored with an Annie Award for Best Score for the award winning television series Dreamworks Dragons: Riders Of Berk, which is based off of the Academy Awarding winning film How To Train Your Dragon.

GUANO APES - PROUD LIKE A GOD

Proud Like A God is the debut album of German Alternative Rock band Guano Apes. The album was released in 1997 and it includes the hit singles “Open Your Eyes”, “Rain” and “Lords Of The Boards”.

The album was certified Platinum in Germany and Switzerland. Sandra Nasić’s vocal range and calling the album a “well-blended mix of sweet Pop and bruising Rock, with a little bit of electronica- informed loops and ambience thrown in for good measure.

The album made them a popular European concert draw with its punk- and alternative-flavored Hard Rock, establishing them enough for RCA to issue the album in the U.S. in 1999.

The first pressing of this Nineties Euro alternative classic will come in transparent green/black vinyl, with every copy numbered.

Green & Black Mixed Colored Vinyl. Only 1000 copies in this color.

ELECTRIC FLAG - A LONG TIME COMIN’

A Long Time Comin' is the first album by American Rock band The Electric Flag, released in 1968. The meat of the album is Soul along with Blues and Rock with a horn section. It is widely seen as an ambitious debut album by music critics.

Ex- Paul Butterfield Band guitarist Mike Bloomfield, drummer Buddy Miles and others put this Soul-Rock band together in 1967. Their debut is a testament to their ability to catch fire and keep on burnin'. Electric Flag appeared at the Monterey International Pop Festival with the Blues Project, Paul Butterfield, and Janis Joplin, and all these groups had some musical connection to each other beyond that pivotal festival.

A Long Time Comin' was called the "New Soul" and tunes like "She Should Have Just" and "Over-Lovin' You" lean more towards the Soul side than the Pop so many radio listeners were attuned to back then. A song like "Groovin' Is Easy" is a classy production, containing intellectual ideas with lots of musical changes, a subdued version of what Janis Joplin herself would give us on I Got Dem Ole Kozmic Blues Again, Mama [MOVLP465] two years later.

A Long Time Comin' influenced bands who would go on to sell more records. The material is pretty much composed by Mike Bloomfield and Barry Goldberg, spiced up by a cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" and spoken-word news broadcasts.

Roland Barker - Shredder Orpheus (Original 1989 Soundtrack)

Orpheus’ journey to the underworld is reworked as a post-apocalyptic skate rock-opera in this 1989 cult classic. The mortal world faces imminent destruction when Hades unleashes an evil television signal that sublimates and kills its viewers. These hypnotic broadcasts from the EUTHANASIA BROADCAST NETWORK are seducing the masses – except skateboard-guitarist Orpheus and his band of “SHREDDERS” who can see through this nefarious scheme. To save the world and his kidnapped wife Orpheus must penetrate the world of the dead and free the television airwaves. Armed with a futuristic guitar and a skateboard from hell, Orpheus storms onto the EBN stage to liberate the airwaves and rescue his wife.

Shredder Orpheus features many Seattle performance luminaries including Seattle poet/performance artist Steven Jesse Bernstein (Sub Pop), and Robert McGinley in the title role. The 17 music cues weave together a blend of Barker’s hypnotic synthesizer compositions with blistering skate rock tunes featuring virtuosic guitar work by Dennis Rea and precision percussion and bass by Rieflin and Amy Denio.

•Unreleased soundtrack – vinyl includes full length DVD of the original movie.
•Music by Roland Barker (Ministry, Revolting Cocks, Blackouts) and Bill Rieflin (Ministry, King Crimson, Blackouts).
•Remastered from the original 24-track recordings.

Disney’s TRON - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - Wendy Carlos

Double LP - two 180g translucent blue vinyl records

Disney's video game crossover movie TRON was a notable landmark in the synthesis of electronic and traditional orchestral music.  Wendy Carlos created a brilliant orchestral recording with symphonic backgrounds by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the UCLA Chorus which was later enhanced and upgraded with an electronic score. The result is an impressive soundscape that successfully and seamlessly fuses organic and electronic music.

The multi-Grammy award winning Wendy Carlos best-known for her popular “Switched on Bach,” series of albums also composed and performed on the soundtracks of  two Stanley Kubrick cinema masterpieces, “A Clockwork Orange” and “The Shining.”

The distinctive gatefold jacket holds two 180g translucent blue vinyl records and includes colorful photos from the popular cult film as well as generous and informative liner notes written by the composer as well as music maven, Michael Fremer who, at the time, served as the film's soundtrack supervisor. Fremer also oversaw the Audio Fidelity mastering by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio.

The TRON soundtrack has two additional tracks ("Only Solutions” and the rock guitar-driven instrumental, "1990's Theme") provided by Journey, one of America's best selling and most beloved bands.

Gatefold package includes:
Colorful photos
Extensive liner notes

upcoming releases from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

DJ KRUSH - THE MESSAGE AT THE DEPTH

In the world of independent Hip Hop, artists either trailblaze like Quasimoto and El-P or salute their forebears like Blackalicious and Jurassic 5. Japanese breaks maestro DJ Krush is a curious exception to the rule; he seems virtually unaffected by trends yet encompasses many of them in his productions, and offers something different with virtually each release.

Similar to lauded underground labels from Def Jux to Big Dada, The Message At The Depth is underground rap for the digital age, far removed from the moldy crates and dusty beats of Krush's Mo' Wax classic Strictly Turntablized. His beats are digital, heavily resampled and quantized, splintering off like drum'n'bass patterns but possessing a depth and clarity not seen since the heyday of Massive Attack.

And with far fewer collaborations here than on his last record, Zen [MOVLP220], there's more room to hear Krush at his best. A pair of instrumentals, the dark breaks symphonies "Sanity Requiem" and "The Blackhole" are added by high-profile vocal features of Antipop Consortium and Anticon, in the stoner nightmare "Song for John Walker". Ace rapping comes from Japanese MC Inden, who gets his point across on "Toki No Tabiji (Journey of Time)" without needing to resort to English.

THE FRAMES - FITZCARRALDO

Fitzcarraldo is the second studio album by The Frames, released on ZTT Records in 1995. The Frames' line-up for Fitzcarraldo features Glen Hansard on guitar and vocals, Colm Mac Con Iomaire on violin, Graham Downey on bass guitar and keyboards, Dave Odlum on lead guitar, Paul Brennan on drums and Noreen O'Donnell on backing vocals.

The title track's name comes from Werner Herzog's 1982 film Fitzcarraldo which frontman Hansard describes as being about a man "pulling a ship over a mountain". The album has been the go-to document for the long-running Dublin band's early sound. Actually, it's not all that different from the punchy, emotional Rock sound that would define them for over a decade following.

Led by the passionate and fearless Glen Hansard, The Frames always remain listenable while liberally pouring out their every embarrassing emotion; the deft violin, cello, and keys that flesh out the songs help prevent too much confessional melodrama. Hansard is a belter, but his earnest vulnerability on songs like "Giving It All Away" draws an empathetic response anyway. "Revelate," a statement of purpose as deeply felt as the best of U2's early singles, would justifiably come to be a live fan favorite.  180 gram audiophile vinyl and Insert

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT -  YEARS, 5 MONTHS AND 2 DAYS IN THE LIFE OF

3 Years, 5 Months & 2 Days in the Life Of... is the debut album by American Hip Hop group Arrested Development, released in 1992. The album's chart success was the beginning of the popularization of Southern Hip Hop.

The album stood in stark contrast to the gangsta rap that ruled the Hip Hop charts in 1992, in its focus on spirituality, peace and love. It was voted as the best album of the year in The Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics poll. The album's title refers to the length of time it took Arrested Development to get a record contract.

The album charted at #3 in the UK Charts, and #7 in the Billboard 200. Charting singles that came off the album are " People Everyday", "Mr. Wendal" and "Tennessee". The latter song is part of the The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list.  180 gram audiophile vinyl and Insert

LEONARD COHEN - I'M YOUR FAN

I'm Your Fan: The Songs of Leonard Cohen is a tribute album to Leonard Cohen, released in 1991, produced by the French music magazine Les Inrockuptibles. The album features Cohen's songs interpreted by some of the most respected Rock acts of the time. Its name is a play on the title of Cohen's album I'm Your Man.

The album includes two different covers of "Tower of Song", one by Robert Forster and another by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. The latter version is a radical deconstruction of the song, edited from an hour-long jam session held by the band. Of particular interest are R.E.M.'s "First We'll Take Manhattan" and The Pixies' "I Can't Forget."   180 gram audiophile vinyl

Between The Buried And Me - The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues

Between the Buried and Me's storied career began back in the year 2000. Since their inception, they've released six full length albums and one live album: Between the Buried and Me (2002, Lifeforce), The Silent Circus (2003, Victory), Alaska (2005, Victory), The Anatomy Of (2006, Victory), Colors (2007, Victory), Colors Live (2008, Victory), The Great Misdirect (2009, Victory). Between the Buried and Me (BTBAM) has thrived both with their albums and through their engaging and unparalleled live show. BTBAM challenges listeners with their ever-evolving musical style, juxtaposed compositions, ultra-long songs, and deep lyrical concepts, as opposed to giving in to the lowest common denominator to try and expand their fan base. The next step in BTBAM's musical journey involves a new label home in Metal Blade Records and another trek into boundary and genre defying song-writing that is their new album, The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 29, 2014

DEAR JERRY: A couple of months ago you wrote about some rare and valuable 78 rpm records from the Gennett company. Would you be willing to something similar for the Paramount label?

I doubt there is another company with so many big ticket items for us collectors to drool over.

DEAR JERRY: The one instrument in a band that is nearly always played by a man is the drums. In fact, the only female drummer I can think of is Karen Carpenter, of the Carpenters.

Karen was far better known for her magnificent contralto, but it was pretty much agreed that she truly was an excellent drummer.

Is there another famous female drummer, perhaps one whose career was specifically based on being an instrumentalist?
—Randi Holstein, Arcadia, Calif.

DEAR RANDI: Yes, and her name is Viola Smith.

Viola's glory years predate the 1970s, the decade when most of the world discovered Karen Carpenter, so it's understandable if you've never heard of this amazing lady.

Smith, born November 29, 1912, began drumming in her family band in the 1920s, but her skill and gender soon became known throughout the jazz and swing band world.

In the late 1930s, Viola joined Frances Carroll and the Coquettes, an all-girl, 12-piece, music and dance band. Smith's swinging drum solos were routinely spotlighted by Carroll and became the most anticipated segment of her shows.

Nearly the entire front cover of Billboard's February 24, 1940 issue is devoted to a photo of Vi during one of her blazing solos with the Coquettes.

In 1942, with WW2 requiring so many American men for military service, there was a shortage of male musicians. Phil Spitalny solved that problem with his very popular Hour of Charm, featuring an all-girl orchestra. Phil's choice on drums was Viola Smith, by now the country's No. 1 female percussionist.

Smith continued drumming up a storm until 1978, when she finally laid her drumsticks down.

If you've already done the math, you know that Vi will be 102 in just a few weeks (November 29).
To see and hear Viola Smith at work, check out this beautiful video!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5c_XZaArH4

IZ ZAT SO? Hollywood quickly took notice of the attractive young lady who also happened to be one of the nation's top instrumentalists.

Viola appeared in two war time films: "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" (1942) and "Here Come the Co-Eds" (1945).

In 1966, when "Cabaret" opened on Broadway, the cast included the Kit Kat Klub Kittens, and the drummer in the Kit Kat band was, of course, Viola Smith.

Coupled with the end of the Maiden England World Tour which began in North America in 2012 and finished last month at Knebworth Park's Sonisphere Festival in the UK, this now completes Maiden's 1980's touring and catalogue reissues cycle, so the band are free to focus on their dynamic future plans.

Sly Stone I’m Just Like You: Sly’s Stone Flower 1969-70 Vinyl Reissue Via Light In The Attic

In 1970, The Family Stone were at the peak of their popularity, but the maestro Sly Stone had already moved his head to a completely different space. The first evidence of Sly’s musical about-turn was revealed by the small catalog of his new label, Stone Flower: a pioneering, peculiar, minimal electro-funk sound that unfolded over just four seven-inch singles. Stone Flower’s releases were credited to their individual artists, but each had Sly’s design and musicianship stamped into the grooves–and the words “Written by Sylvester Stewart/Produced and arranged by Sly Stone” on the sticker.

Set up by Stone’s manager David Kapralik with distribution by Atlantic Records, Stone Flower was, predictably, a family affair: the first release was by Little Sister, fronted by Stone’s little sister Vaetta Stewart. It was short lived too–the imprint folded in 1971–but its influence was longer lasting. The sound Stone formulated while working on Stone Flower’s output would shape the next phase in his own career as a recording artist: it was here he began experimenting with the brand new Maestro Rhythm King drum machine. In conjunction with languid, effected organ and guitar sounds and a distinctly lo-fi soundscape, Sly’s productions for Stone Flower would inform the basis of his masterwork There’s A Riot Goin’ On.

This long overdue compilation of Sly’s Stone Flower era gathers each side of the five 45s plus ten previously unissued cuts from the label archives, all newly remastered from the original tapes. In these grooves you’ll find the missing link between the rocky, soulful Sly Stone of Stand! and the dark, drum machine-punctuated, overdubbed sound of There’s A Riot Going On. I’m Just Like You: Sly’s Stone Flower 1969-70 opens up the mysteries of an obscure but monumental phase in Stone’s career.

•Compilation and notes by Alec Palao
•An exclusive new interview with Sly Stone himself
•In-depth liner notes with first-hand reminiscences of the Stone Flower era from many of the participants
•Features all five Stone Flower produced singles plus ten previously unissued cuts from the label archives
•All tracks newly remastered from the original tapes
•2xLP housed in a gatefold “tip-on” jacket

Sam Amidon Lily-O Available On Vinyl Via Nonesuch

Lily-O, a new album of reimagined folk songs by Vermont-born singer/fiddler/banjoist/guitarist Sam Amidon was released September 30 by Nonesuch Records, with the vinyl following on October 27. The album was produced by Valgeir Sigurðsson (Björk, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Feist) and features the innovative jazz guitarist and composer Bill Frisell, along with Amidon’s other frequent collaborators, bassist Shahzad Ismaily and drummer Chris Vatalaro.

Lily-O’s ten songs are mostly traditional folk songs gathered from disparate sources and refashioned in Amidon’s signature way. The interplay between the four musicians is informed by their backgrounds in improvised music and the spontaneous nature of the sessions. As always, the central element is Amidon’s voice, which, in his deceptively understated manner, tells tales of adventure, love, violence and redemption.

LP is ready for pre-order at Nonesuch (Due 10/27)

PRIMORDIAL to Release New LP In November Via Metal Blade Records

Dublin's finest metal exports, PRIMORDIAL, will release their long-anticipated new studio album, 'Where Greater Men Have Fallen' later this Fall via Metal Blade Records.

Comments singer A.A. Nemtheanga on "Where Greater Men Have Fallen": "Some time at the end of 2013 we sat and began to plot a course for album number eight. We moved camp to a new rehearsal room and the ideas began to take shape. We felt it was time to try a new studio and engineer so we went to grouse lodge deep in the middle of Ireland and employed Gomez (Cathedral, Angelwitch, Grave Miasma) to come over and work on the new album." The band's idea was, of course, to keep the PRIMORDIAL trademarks but add a more live sound, broader and heavier. In 2014, we stand at the brink of releasing album number eight and, according to Nemtheanga: "we feel revitalized, the hunger never left and we are ready for another chapter to be written in our history!"

* Pre-Order: Expected to ship on or around November 20, 2014 *

Pink Floyd The Endless River Vinyl Pre-Order

The Endless River represents a return to the creative principles that informed the writing process that produced Pink Floyd classics like Echoes, Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Animals.

In early 1993, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright set up their equipment in their own Britannia Row Studios in Islington and created more than hundred pieces of music by jamming together, interacting with each other's performances and recording the results.

They then honed the pieces at David's Astoria floating studio, played them live for 2 days at Olympic Studios in Barnes with an extended lineup (Guy Pratt on bass, Jon Carin on keyboards and Gary Wallis on percussion). After that, the core trio returned to Astoria, and worked further on the compositions, alongside co-producer Bob Ezrin, refining the structure, tempos and arrangements. The result, after lyrics and vocals were added, was the 12 million selling 'Division Bell' album.

At the time, there had been talk of a separate ambient album being created from the non-vocal tracks not subsequently issued on 'The Division Bell', but the idea was eventually dropped.

In 2014 David Gilmour and Nick Mason re-entered the studio and, starting with unreleased keyboard performances by Richard Wright, who sadly died in 2008, added further instrumentation to the tracks, as well as creating new material. The result is The Endless River, including 60% of recordings other than the 1993 sessions, but based upon them. The title is a further link, '... the endless river…' being part of the closing phrases of High Hopes, the final song of the previous Pink Floyd album.

2-LP SET includes
- Heavyweight 180 gram vinyl
- Gatefold sleeve, full color inner bags
- 16-page 275mmx275mm booklet with unseen photographs from 1993 sessions
- Download card

This title will be released on November 10, 2014.
