Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

from our friends at LightInTheAttic

Native North America (Vol. 1): Aboriginal Folk, Rock, and Country 1966–1985 (Limited Color Vinyl) Pre-Order

Largely unheard, criminally undocumented, but at their core, utterly revolutionary, the recordings of the diverse North American Aboriginal community will finally take their rightful place in our collective history in the form of Native North America (Vol. 1): Aboriginal Folk, Rock, and Country 1966–1985. An anthology of music that was once near-extinct and off-the-grid is now available for all to hear, in what is, without a doubt, Light In The Attic’s most ambitious and historically significant project in the label’s 12-year journey.

Native North America (Vol. 1) features music from the Indigenous peoples of Canada and the northern United States, recorded in the turbulent decades between 1966 to 1985. It represents the fusion of shifting global popular culture and a reawakening of Aboriginal spirituality and expression. The majority of this material has been widely unavailable for decades, hindered by lack of distribution or industry support and by limited mass media coverage, until now. You’ll hear Arctic garage rock from the Nunavik region of northern Quebec, melancholy Yup’ik folk from Alaska, and hushed country blues from the Wagmatcook First Nation reserve in Nova Scotia. You’ll hear echoes of Neil Young, Velvet Underground, Leonard Cohen, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Johnny Cash, and more among the songs, but injected with Native consciousness, storytelling, poetry, history, and ceremony.

The stories behind the music presented on Native North America (Vol. 1) range from standard rock-and-roll dreams to transcendental epiphanies. They have been collected with love and respect by Vancouver-based record archaeologist and curator Kevin “Sipreano” Howes in a 15-year quest to unearth the history that falls between the notes of this unique music. Tirelessly, Howes scoured obscure, remote areas for the original vinyl recordings and the artists who made them, going so far as to send messages in Inuktitut over community radio airwaves in hopes that these lost cultural heroes would resurface.

With cooperation and guidance from the artists, producers, family members, and behind the scenes players, Native North America (Vol. 1) sheds real light on the painful struggles and deep traditions of the greater Indigenous community and the significance of its music. The songs speak of joy and spirituality, but also tell of real tragedy and strife, like that of Algonquin/Mohawk artist Willy Mitchell, whose music career was sparked by a bullet to the head from the gun of a trigger-happy police officer, or those of Inuk singer-songwriter Willie Thrasher, who was robbed of his family and traditional Inuit culture by the residential school system.

Considering the financially motivated destruction of our environment, the conservative political landscape, and corporate bottom-line dominance, it’s bittersweet to report that the revolutionary songs featured on Native North America hold as much meaning today as when they were originally recorded. Dedicated to legendary Métis singer-songwriter and poet Willie Dunn, featured on the anthology but who sadly passed away during its making, Native North America (Vol. 1) is only the beginning. A companion set featuring a crucial selection of folk, rock, and country from the United States’ Lower 48 and Mexico is currently in production.

Waxwork 'Trick 'r Treat' Score Deluxe Vinyl Release Pre-Order

Waxwork Records is thrilled to release, for the first time ever on vinyl, Douglas Pipes’ score to the 2007 Halloween anthology film, TRICK ‘R TREAT. Directed by Michael Dougherty (X-Men 2, Superman Returns), TRICK ‘R TREAT has become a modern cult classic and has become traditional October viewing alongside classic horror films such as John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN, and has earned a 24-hour rotational airing in 2013. Starring Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, and Dylan Baker, TRICK ‘R TREAT has won over fans and critics alike with it’s maliciously whimsical approach of breaking down Halloween traditions in one of the most impressive horror films to date.

Waxwork Records has worked closely with Michael Dougherty, Douglas Pipes, Legendary Pictures, Warner Bros., and La La Land Records to create the ultimate TRICK ‘R TREAT soundtrack experience.

This expanded double LP features over an hour of music that has been mastered for vinyl and supervised by the composer. For art duties, Waxwork brought on none other than the incredibly talented Francensco Francavilla (Afterlife With Archie, The Black Beetle). Francavilla has worked as an in-house artist for both Marvel and DC Comics, and has created the full LP packaging artwork with approval from director Michael Dougherty, himself.

If that wasn’t enough, at the request of Michael Dougherty, Waxwork has acquired the full audio stems from the film to create a full bonus Spooky Sound FX album perfect for a haunted house, or to spook your neighbors this Halloween season. Like the classic Disney LPs such as “Chilling, Thrilling Sounds From The Haunted House”, the included TRICK ‘R TREAT spooky sound-fx album will take the listener through the streets of Warren Valley, Ohio on a cold Halloween night filled with vampires, werewolves, rock quarry zombies, and Sam himself. The entire spooky sound-fx album has been constructed, mixed, and edited by Evan Chen, the sound designer on Michael Dougherty’s 1996 animated short SEASON’S GREETINGS which features Sam’s first appearance, and inspired the film TRICK ‘R TREAT.

 LP package details include:
  •  Deluxe heavyweight tip-on gatefold jacket with satin coating
  •  Full artwork and design by Francesco Francavilla
  •  Liner notes by director Michael Dougherty and composer Douglas Pipes
  •  An inserted 11” x 22” poster

Jethro Tull WAR CHILD The 40th Anniversary Edition Available

In 1974, Jethro Tull announced plans for WarChild, a multi-faceted project that was to encompass a feature-length film, a soundtrack album, as well a new album from the band. In October of that year, Tull released a 10-song album that would climb to #2 in the U.S. and the top 15 in the U.K., but the film and accompanying soundtrack were shelved.

Originally released in 1974, WarChild features one of the group’s most prolific lineups and includes Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, John Evans, Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond and Barrie Barlow. Unlike its predecessors – Thick As A Brick and A Passion Play – which featured 40-odd minutes of continuous music, WarChild marked a return to songs of a more conventional length, including the FM-radio staple, “Bungle In The Jungle.” The new Theatre Edition unearths a trio of unreleased recordings: “Tomorrow Was Today,” “Good Godmother,” and a different arrangement of “WarChild” recorded after the version on the final album.

This brand new vinyl edition contains a new Steven Wilson stereo remix of the original album   Limited 180gram Vinyl LP

PETER TOSH - BUSH DOCTOR

Bush Doctor is the third studio album by Jamaican reggae musician Peter Tosh. Along with Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer he was one of the core members of the band The Wailers (1963–1974). Tosh also established himself as a successful solo artist. In 1978 he was contracted by Rolling Stones Records and the album Bush Doctor was released in the same year, introducing Tosh to a larger audience.

The single from the album, a cover version of The Temptations song "Don't Look Back", performed as a duet with Mick Jagger, made Tosh one of the best-known reggae artists. Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is also featured on the album, playing guitar on "Bush Doctor" and "Stand Firm."

DJ KRUSH - THE MESSAGE AT THE DEPTH

In the world of independent Hip Hop, artists either trailblaze like Quasimoto and El-P or salute their forebears like Blackalicious and Jurassic 5. Japanese breaks maestro DJ Krush is a curious exception to the rule; he seems virtually unaffected by trends yet encompasses many of them in his productions, and offers something different with virtually each release.

Similar to lauded underground labels from Def Jux to Big Dada, The Message At The Depth is underground rap for the digital age, far removed from the moldy crates and dusty beats of Krush's Mo' Wax classic Strictly Turntablized. His beats are digital, heavily resampled and quantized, splintering off like drum'n'bass patterns but possessing a depth and clarity not seen since the heyday of Massive Attack.

And with far fewer collaborations here than on his last record, Zen, there's more room to hear Krush at his best. A pair of instrumentals, the dark breaks symphonies "Sanity Requiem" and "The Blackhole" are added by high-profile vocal features of Antipop Consortium and Anticon, in the stoner nightmare "Song for John Walker". Ace rapping comes from Japanese MC Inden, who gets his point across on "Toki No Tabiji (Journey of Time)" without needing to resort to English.

DREAM THEATER - AWAKE

Awake is the third studio album by American progressive Metal/Rock band Dream Theater and was originally released in 1994. After the success of Images And Words, Dream Theater was eager to work on fresh material and retreated to the studio in May 1994. John Purdell and Duane Baron produced, engineered and mixed the album. The album's cover was designed by the band and features numerous references to the album's lyrics. The album peaked at 32 on the US Billboard 200.

Awake was the last Dream Theater album to feature keyboardist Kevin Moore, who announced his decision to leave the band during the recording of the album. Dream Theater auditioned for keyboardists to replace Moore for the upcoming Awake world tour and eventually hired Derek Sherinian.

"Lie", "Caught in a Web" and "The Silent Man" were released as singles. There is no title track on the album, but the lyric "Awake" appears in the songs "Innocence Faded" and "The Silent Man."

LAMB - BACKSPACE UNWIND

Backspace Unwind is the long awaited new LAMB album. The sixth album of the electronic music duo contains 10 new songs written by Andy Barlow & Lou Rhodes with 4 featuring string arrangements by Tom Trapp, who also conducted the string section for the recording session at Air Lyndhurst Studios in London.

'Making this album has been a journey of discovery in so many ways', says Lou. 'After making music together over a period of almost 20 years (with a 5 year hiatus to take a breath) it's reassuring that new routes and approaches seem to abound. Over those years I think we've learnt that this journey needs no map; in fact tearing that map up, at every twist and turn, has become our regular gleeful practice.'

The LP version of Backspace Unwind contains a bonus track that's not available elsewhere ("As Satellites Go By" Piano Version*). This fantastic package also contains a free CD copy!
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Gatefold sleeve
  • Vinyl only bonus track: "As Satellites Go By (Piano Version)"
  • Includes free CD copy of the album

John Mayall: A Special Life Vinyl Pre-Order

Forty Below Records announces an October 27 release date for the special gate fold two-LP vinyl set from the legendary “Godfather of British Blues,” John Mayall, of his universally-acclaimed album, A Special Life, distributed by Sony/RED. The new album was recorded last November at Entourage Studios in North Hollywood and was produced by Mayall, with co-production, engineering and mixing by Eric Corne. A Special Life also boasts original cover art and design created by John Mayall.

Reviews of A Special Life have been over-the-top and acknowledge Mayall’s lofty place in blues history. “After over a half-century of playing the blues, John Mayall is a genuine master, and he has certainly led A Special Life,” said Living Blues magazine. “I’d easily put this one among Mayall’s best efforts – and that includes Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton, A Hard Road, and Blues From Laurel Canyon – so run, don’t walk, to your record store come release day for a copy of A Special Life,!” wrote About.com. And UK magazine, Uncut, summed up its review by stating the obvious: “Mayall delivers everything with utter conviction.”

The aptly-titled A Special Life serves as further testament to John Mayall’s boundless talent, vitality and ever-dynamic personality. Along with his accomplished band, he goes back to his roots on the new album with an eclectic mix of songs centered in the blues, but with diversions into rock and Americana.

Release date scheduled for October 27th.

Dead Can Dance 'Spiritchaser' Reissue Available From MOFI

The sonic equivalent of an engaging journey down the Nile River, Spiritchaser is Dead Can Dance’s unforgettable swan song. The percussive-based 1996 set finds the world-fusion group fashioning thematic songs around rhythmic structures and tribal beats, creating atmospheric soundscapes that take the listener through Africa, South America, England, and Europe—sometimes within the same movement.

Blurring the lines between styles and genres so that they become irrelevant, Dead Can Dance members Lisa Gerrard and Gerald Perry generate the illusion of being lost amidst a peaceful rain forest that’s yet to be discovered by man. Spiritchaser is the sound of a lost culture, where ethereal singing, overlapping harmonies, and trance-like tempos serve to calm, relax, and enchant. Gerrard’s phonetic singing—often taking the form of prayer—is grand albeit understated, as much spiritual as it is natural. Just like the music itself.

Exotic instrumentation abounds, but nothing seems out of place. A Turkish clarinet, finger cymbals, and a borrowed melody from the Beatles’ “Within You Without You” informs the mystery of tracks such as “Niereka,” which epitomizes Dead Can Dance’s incomparable blend of ancient and modern, alien and familiar, spooky and freeing, serene and intense. Throughout,Spiritchaser strives for a transcendental sense in which music speaks to a higher power and greater purpose than most artists would like to believe—or dare capture. Dead Can Dance’s ambition extended to the production.

Ebsen And The Witch/Thought Forms Split Vinyl Available

Invada Records are pleased to announce the release of a split LP between Brighton’s Esben and the Witch and elemental Bristol fuzz-peddlers Thought Forms, due for release April 7th. It comes off the back of critically lauded outings from both acts last year – the former with Wash the Sins Not Only the Face and the latter with Ghost Mountain.

Recalling the classic era of split singles in the US underground – think of those heady early Sub Pop days where you’d get Mudhoney and Sonic Youth covering one another on either side of a 7”, aka record collector heaven – it’s the perfect manifestation of both acts’ prodigious and earnest approach to touring: a collection of songs forged with the drama and meticulous craft that come from the trial and error of weeks spent on the road testing new material.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 6, 2014

DEAR JERRY: Last night on TV there was a singing commercial for the Target stores, and the song they use took me back at least 50 years.

By a girl, and titled something like "You're Dynamite," it's similar to one I heard as a teenager, but never again until now.

Who made this record oh so long ago?
—Lena Stevenson, Evansville, Ind.

DEAR LENA: "Dynamite" (Decca 30333), released in the summer of '57, was the second chart record for Brenda Lee, then a 12-year-old powder keg whose dynamism quickly earned her the nickname of Little Miss Dynamite.

Though the recording in the Target spots is not Brenda's "Dynamite," their one-minute version is remarkably true to the original.

Unfortunately, the identity of Target's singer is not yet known.

DEAR JERRY: While reading the bio provided on Tony Bennett's web site, one little piece of information has me curious.

Here is their own account of how his stage name went from Joe Bari to Tony Bennett:

"In 1949, Bob Hope came to Greenwich Village to check out my act. He liked my singing so much that after the show he came to my dressing room and said: 'Come on kid, you're going to come to the Paramount Theatre and sing with me.'

"He also said he didn't care for my stage name (Joe Bari) and asked for my real name. I told him it's Anthony Dominick Benedetto. He said 'We'll call you Tony Bennett."

Did he make any records before the name change? Neither his site nor Wikipedia indicate he ever recorded as Joe Bari.

Who were some of the other Italians in the 1950s and '60s who didn't use their birth names?
—Vincent Terenza, New Bedford, Mass.

DEAR VINCENT: About two years before Tony signed with Columbia, teamed up with Percy Faith and His Orchestra, and recorded the million-selling "Because of You," he waxed two tracks as Joe Bari, for Leslie Records. He was just 22 at the time.

The A-side is actually a duet with Pat Easton. Together and separately they sing "Vieni Qui (Come to Me)" (label shows "Come to Me," but "Come Here" is a better translation).

The reverse, a Joe Bari solo, is the Gershwin brothers' "Fascinating Rhythm" (Leslie 919). Both sides also feature Marty Manning and His Orchestra.

"Vieni Qui (Come to Me)" is a pleasant male-female duet seemingly on a par with many of the other tunes then, and appropriate to accompany a gondola ride; however, the trade reviews were not so kind.

The August 20, 1949 Billboard review really panned it, saying: "poor lyrics, poor vocal, poor disk … in the end it's a nothing."

Ouch!

Suffice to say, the one and only Joe Bari record flopped, which makes it very rare and probably at the top of the want list of every Tony Bennett collector. He may not even have a copy.

Where there is both rarity and demand, there is value, and this elusive record is valued upwards of $2,000.

Besides Tony Bennett (Anthony Dominick Benedetto), here are some more memorable Italian singers, with both stage and birth names — which occasionally vary from one source to another:

Annette (Annette Joanne Funicello)
Frankie Avalon (Francis Thomas Avallone)

Connie Francis (Concetta Rosa Maria Franconero)
Fabian (Fabiano Anthony Forte)
Gaylords: Ronnie Gaylord (Ronald L. Fredianelli) and Burt Holiday (Bonoldo Bonaldi)

Felix Cavaliere (Rascals)
Jim Croce
Tommy DeVito (4 Seasons)
Mickey Dolenz
Jimmy Durante

Under The Table And Dreaming (Pre-Order) by Dave Matthews Band

On their major-label debut, Under the Table and Dreaming, the Dave Matthews Band is helped by the lean production of Steve Lillywhite, who manages to rein in the group's tendency to meander. The result is a set of eclectic pop/rock that is accentuated by bursts of instrumental virtuosity instead of being ruled by it. That also means that the Dave Matthews Band is capable of turning out pop songs, and as the hit single "What Would You Say" and "Ants Marching" illustrate, they have a flair for catchy hooks. ~ Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

It is a mixture of strong emotions and a flashback bringing the musicians and the audience back to the glorious past... with no lifeline, with memories exploding in the musicians mind (childhood best friends, then enemies and now friends again...) and the audience.

The bulk of the material has been recorded in Dublin at the O2 Arena on the last EVER show of the Frantic Four line-up on 04/12/14.

The Beatles Mono Vinyl Box Set Available

The Beatles in mono: This is how most listeners first heard the group in the 1960's, when mono was the predominant audio format. Up until 1968, each Beatles album was given a unique mono and stereo mix, but the group always regarded the mono as primary. THE BEATLES IN MONO VINYL BOX SET is released in mono on fourteen 180-gram vinyl LPs with faithfully replicated artwork, newly mastered from the analogue master tapes.

In an audiophile-minded undertaking, The Beatles' acclaimed mono albums have been newly mastered for vinyl from quarter-inch master tapes at Abbey Road Studios by GRAMMY®-winning engineer Sean Magee and GRAMMY®-winning mastering supervisor Steve Berkowitz. While THE BEATLES IN MONO CD boxed set released in 2009 was created from digital remasters, for this new vinyl project, Magee and Berkowitz cut the records without using any digital technology. Instead, they employed the same procedures used in the 1960's, guided by the original albums and by detailed transfer notes made by the original cutting engineers.

Working in the same room at Abbey Road where most of The Beatles' albums were initially cut, the pair first dedicated weeks to concentrated listening, fastidiously comparing the master tapes with first pressings of the mono records made in the 1960s. Using a rigorously tested Studer A80 machine to play back the precious tapes, the new vinyl was cut on a 1980s-era VMS80 lathe.

Manufactured for the world at Optimal Media in Germany, The Beatles' albums are presented in their original glory, both sonically and in their packaging. The boxed collection's exclusive 12-inch by 12-inch hardbound book features new essays and a detailed history of the mastering process by award-winning radio producer and author Kevin Howlett. The book is illustrated with many rare studio photos of The Beatles, fascinating archive documents, and articles and advertisements sourced from 1960s publications.

Albums included in the box set are REVOLVER, MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR, RUBBER SOUL, WITH THE BEATLES, MONO MASTERS (3LP SET), THE BEATLES (2LP SET), BEATLES FOR SALE, SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND, PLEASE PLEASE ME, HELP! and A HARD DAY'S NIGHT.

Announcing: Serengeti 'Kenny Dennis III' Vinyl Release

Life can’t always be bratwursts and O’Douls. Sometimes, you need Kenny Dennis. He's a cross between Ron Swanson, a Bill Swerski superfan, and the best Golden Age rapper that you never heard.

You may be familiar with Serengeti from his collaborative project Sisyphus (w/ Sufjan Stevens and Son Lux). If you’re unfamiliar with the saga of Kenny Dennis, this is the perfect opportunity to become a believer. On Kenny Dennis III the thick-‘stached Chicago MC is shouldering a mid-life crisis while forming a rap group, Perfecto, with Kenny’s long-time ally and rap partner, Ders (Anders Holm from Workaholics). Ders narrates the tale of the pair’s rise as they sweep through malls across the Midwest. Odd Nosdam makes the beats and Serengeti weaves the magic. So just take a seat, tune in, and have a time.

Kenny Dennis III will be released on 11/11 on 2xLP, CD and Digital. The VIP-exclusive vinyl pictured above is limited to just 300 hand-numbered copies on baby pink & highlighter yellow color-in-color vinyl. And we also have splatter vinyl (limited to 1000). In addition, the first 500 purchasers of any format will receive a free Kenny Dennis Comic Book and limited edition Perfecto cassette (limited to 500).

The Postal Service 'Give Up' Vinyl Reissue

On November 25th, in perfect harmony with the release of the new Postal Service documentary, Everything Will Change, we will be reissuing the single LP version of this classic album, which has been created using the 10th-anniversary remastered tapes.

The Postal Service is a long-distance collaboration between Ben Gibbard (singer/guitarist from Death Cab for Cutie) and Jimmy Tamborello (Jimmy recorded the Beachwood Sparks album Make the Cowboy Robots Cry and also records under the name Dntel). Ben and Jimmy sent music back and forth, between California and Washington, each adding new elements until the record was complete. The result is a sweetly charming, largely electronic album with a warmth not typically associated with the clicks-and-beeps set. As an added bonus, additional vocals on the record are provided by Jen Wood and Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis.

Portastatic 'The Summer of the Shark' Vinyl Reissue

On November 4, Portastatic’s The Summer of the Shark will be available for the first time on vinyl as part of a monthly series of reissues to mark the 25th anniversary of Merge Records.

Mac McCaughan, co-founder of Merge Records and frontman of the band Superchunk, began recording solo albums under the name Portastatic in the early ’90’s. Beginning with this album, Portastatic evolved from a lo-fi side project to become McCaughan’s main focus throughout Superchunk’s long hiatus in the early ’00s.

McCaughan wrote the songs on The Summer of the Shark in 2001 while Superchunk was on tour in support of Here’s to Shutting Up, which was released mere days after the September 11 attacks and would be the band’s last studio album for nine years. The resulting batch of songs was the last Portastatic album recorded almost entirely at home; it was also the most emotionally resonant and musically compact collection to date.

Recorded at McCaughan’s home studio in Chapel Hill, The Summer of the Shark includes contributions from Janet Weiss (Wild Flag, Quasi, Sleater-Kinney), Tony Crow (Lambchop), Margaret White (Versus, Matt Pond PA), Matthew McCaughan (Bon Iver, Hiss Golden Messenger), Aaron Oliva, and John Plymale.

LP is pressed on white vinyl, and includes a coupon for a full download. Preorders will ship to arrive on or around the release date of November 4.

Owen 'Other People's Songs' Vinyl Pre-Order

Mike Kinsella has spent nearly his entire life (give or take those first 12 years or so) playing with some of the most influential bands of the last couple decades. Indeed, an entire generation of musicians is indebted to his time in groups including Cap'n Jazz, American Football, and Owls.

After each of those bands dissolved for one reason or another, Kinsella took to recording under the pseudonym Owen and has slowly and steadily built up a solid catalog of releases under this solo project.

Which brings us to the aptly named Other People's Songs, a collection of eight covers that Kinsella recorded this spring in Chicago with trusted producer Neil Strauch.

At first glance, the list of the rock and punk artists whose tracks Kinsella tackled -- among them Against Me!, Depeche Mode, The Promise Ring, and Lungfish -- might seem at odds with the often quieter, lushly arranged music he releases under the Owen moniker.

But upon closer inspection, one finds the kind of excellent songwriting and lyrical wit that are hallmarks of Kinsella's own recorded output.

With the help of female vocalist Sarah Mitchell, as well as occasional touches of violin and cello, Kinsella transforms his selections in unique and surprising ways.

Consider Other People's Songs to be Kinsella's carefully curated mixtape of songs he loves then and now, from him to you. All that's left to do is push play.

Aloha 'Here Comes Everyone' Vinyl Available

Here Comes Everyone launches the retooled Aloha machine with a fury of stick-to-the-ribcage blasts and shimmering ballads. Aloha adds the orchestral pop of the late '60s and the post-prog rock of the '80s to its big-thinking, rhythm-rich repertoire. Engaging yet contemplative, Aloha crosses the experimental/populist divide.

Here Comes Everyone brings the listener on a fevered tour of post-modernity, from the edge cities to the urban enclaves, from buried history to the impending future. What can't be painted with words is told by yearning mellotrons, spikey guitars, and graceful chord changes.

With the help of Don Zientara and Chad Clark at Inner Ear/Silver Sonya Studios (where new Aloha member T.J. Lipple works as an engineer), the band sounds warmer than ever, with all the spirit of a basement-show sensation and the gloss and confidence of an arena rocker.

A Perfect Circle - eMOTIVe

The album contains ten political cover songs, and two original songs. Of the two original songs, one of them is "Passive", a version of the song "Vacant", by the ex-group Tapeworm. The song was created by Keenan, Danny Lohner, Trent Reznor, and others for the defunct Tapeworm project. Tapeworm never released a studio version, but A Perfect Circle has played the song live since 2001. The other original song was "Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums", which was originally perceived to be a remix of the song "Pet" from Thirteenth Step. Maynard James Keenan spoke about this song on aMOTION and insists that it is not a remix, but rather a second part of "Pet". The lyrical content of "Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums" is similar to that in "Pet", but the delivery and staging of the vocals vary, reflecting the political tones of the album.
