Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 13, 2014

DEAR JERRY: After reading your informative column about RCA Victor's introduction in 1949 of the 45 rpm single, I have just one unanswered question.

What was their introductory retail price?
—Lance Orringer, Lincoln, Neb.

DEAR LANCE: I probably should have included the MSRP in that piece.

Unveiled in February 1949, RCA Victor's "little records [seven inch] with the big hole" had one of two possible suggested retail prices, exclusive of any sales taxes.

RCA's Red Seal series, devoted to classical music, were 95 cents, but all other 45s were only 65 cents.

Given that the cost of manufacturing a like number of classical singles should not be any different than an identical quantity of pop or country records, I tend to attribute the cost variance to the size of the print runs.

Albums, not singles, have always been the format of choice for classical music lovers, and the same could also be said for jazz.

Another factor would be the huge singles market for juke boxes, especially in the mid-20th century. Coin machine operators always wanted the current hits spinning at their locations, preferably tunes suitable for dancing.

The 45 rpm was simply not made to showcase Beethoven's "Ninth Symphony in D Minor."

As to the pricing discrepancy, some classical aficionados suspected that, since they usually had more disposable income, why not charge them a bit extra.

Curious as to what those seemingly inexpensive prices are if allowing for 65 years of inflation?

What 65 cents could buy in 1949 would now require approximately $6.75. And 95 cents equates to about $9.90.

Coincidentally, the retail price range today for most new seven-inch singles is $6.00 to $9.00. Relative to the overall economy, the cost of vinyl music is actually unchanged since 1949.

We are often asked to identify the world's first 45, but there is no singular answer to that.

RCA simultaneously released a batch of 45s, including ones representing most of their primary musical styles.

Making the event more colorful, singles in each of seven categories were produced using different vinyl colors.

Those color/genre combinations were: cerise, (cherry red), for Blues & Rhythm; green for Country & Western; sky-blue for International (foreign); midnight blue for Popular Classics; red for Red Seal Classical; yellow for Children's Entertainment; and basic black for Popular.

DEAR JERRY: I collect the music of the 1960s, and, since I file my singles by label, one thing has jumped out at me. In terms of sales, that decade seemed to be dominated by just a few companies.

You'd expect Capitol (Beatles, etc.) and RCA Victor (Elvis) to be near the top of the heap, but what about Motown, and its offshoot, Tamla? For an independent outfit, they had sensational success.

Which record companies had the most No.1 hits in the '60s?
—Alan Gardner, Ogden, Utah

DEAR ALAN: Good question, especially since we have never researched the companies with the most chart-topping hits of the 1960s.

So as not to miss anything noteworthy, I'll use both Billboard and Cash Box surveys.

We will list the seven companies with 10 or more No. 1 hits in the '60s. Most are conglomerates with more than one label, but for this purpose we'll combine their totals.

Also noted are the artists with multiple No. 1 hits for that company, in that decade:

1. Capitol/Apple/Tower (25): Beatles (17); Beach Boys (3)
2. RCA/Colgems (23): Elvis Presley (8); Monkees (5)
3: Tamla/Motown/Gordy (23): Supremes (13); Temptations (3); Four Tops (2); Stevie Wonder (2)
4. Columbia/Epic (20): Bobby Vinton (4); Simon & Garfunkel (2); Gary Puckett and the Union Gap (2)
5. MGM (14): Connie Francis (3); Herman's Hermits (3); Cowsills (3)
6. Warner Bros./Elektra (13): Doors (3); Petula Clark (2)
7: Atlantic/Atco (11): Young Rascals (3); Aretha Franklin (2)

IZ ZAT SO? Because "The Motown Sound" became a term of endearment, many think that Motown came first, with sister label Tamla born later.

Truth is that Tamla is the older sister.

Tamla's first issue, Marv Johnson's "Come to Me" (Tamla 101) came out in January 1958.

About nine months (a gestational coincidence), and eight more Tamla singles later, Motown's debut single, "Bad Girl" by the Miracles (Motown G-1), was released.

Pre Beatles, Capitol had only one No. 1 hit in the '60s, Kyu Sakamoto's "Sukiyaki." Before that, their most recent one was the Kingston Trio's "Tom Dooley."

Without the Beatles, Capitol, then with only eight other entries, would not even be on this list.

Harvest of Gold (Pre-Order) by Gossling

Australia’s Gossling is quietly brewing a revolution against the status quo, all powered by delicate and sophisticated vocals. There’s no swagger here, no bravado, instead Gossling’s music proves the irresistible power of minimalism.

“I’m interested in music that stirs emotion,” says Gossling’s mastermind Helen Croome, about her latest album, Harvest of Gold. The debut LP follows the critically-lauded EPs which earned Croome accolades and airtime in Australia and activated a global audience, earning Gossling a stellar 2014 set at South-By-Southwest where she was named by the links of Elle, Esquire and Buzzfeed as an artist to watch in 2014.

Back in Melbourne she teamed up with producer John Castle (Vance Joy, The Bamboos) and set up shop in his studio called The Shed. “It’s really a shed,” Croome laughs, “it’s a three room shack near his house, and John and I would toy around with keyboards and drums. The mics are set up to be live. If you have an idea, we put it down right away.” The quick production session created the succinct sound of Harvest of Gold - nothing overwrought, just simple songs with lush textures and vocal hooks that deftly weaves complex emotional themes throughout.

The Lords Of The New Church  - Self-Titled (Colored Vinyl) (Pre-Order)

In 1982, punk legends Stiv Bators (The Dead Boys), Brian James (The Damned), Dave Tregunna (Sham 69), and Nick Turner (The Barracudas) formed the supergroup The Lords of the New Church. Their debut, self- titled LP incorporated their punk roots while transitioning into a more polished gothic style with catchy hooks. Along with it came their new image of leather-vested vigilantes with dark lyrics musing from religion to politics. This album helped to usher in a new era of post-punk rock in the early '80s and Drastic Plastic Records is thrilled to present it sounding better than ever!

Guardians of the Galaxy Soundtrack Deluxe Vinyl Edition

Collector's Edition 2 disc GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY vinyl includes AWESOME MIX VOL. 1, the collection of songs featured in the film. Music plays a major role in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY as the 1970s songs featured in the film are part of the story line in a unique way. Explaining how the songs come to play in the story, director James Gunn says, 'One of the main story points in the movie is that Quill has this compilation tape (Awesome Mix #1) that he got from his mother before she died that she made for him. It was of songs that she loved, all songs from the 1970s, and that's the only thing he has left of his mother and that's the only thing he has left of his home on Earth. He uses that as a connection to his past and to the sadness that he feels of having left all that and lost all that.' As well as, the complete official original score from the film as composed by Tyler Bates.

Songs like "Hooked on a Feeling", "Spirit in the Sky", and "Cherry Bomb" lit up theaters as part of the trailers and are joined by other great hits like "Come and Get Your Love" and "Escape". It's a great collection of songs from the 70's that proves that Peter Quill's mother had great taste in music.

Weezer 'Everything Will Be Alright In The End' LP

Los Angeles, CA s Weezer released their highly anticipated ninth album, Everything Will Be Alright In The End, on October 7th, 2014 on Republic Records. Produced by Ric Ocasek, who previously helmed production on the band s first and third records ( The Blue Album and The Green Album ), Everything Will Be Alright In The End is the band s first collection of new material in four years.

Since forming in 1992, Weezer has released a myriad of celebrated, chart-topping albums, selling over 13 million records worldwide. Following an intensely prolific couple years at the end of the aughts, the band chose to deliberately dial down the tempo in 2010, a move singer/guitarist Rivers Cuomo says allowed him to write at a slower pace, giving the songs he wanted to use for an album the time to gradually grow into their final forms. He started almost every song on the piano, eventually transferring them to the guitar before taking them to the band. When it came time to record the material, Weezer reunited with the man who helped them make some of their most iconic album-length work, Cars frontman Ric Ocasek. The resulting album, Everything Will Be Alright In The End, is a stand-out gem in Weezer s vast and varied catalogue, a reflection of a much-loved band at their very best. Organized thematically around three groups of songs, it is an album that utilizes that sound from the band s earliest days to tell new stories in 2014, creating some of the finest, most heartfelt songs Weezer has ever recorded.

Wilco - Alpha Mike Foxtrot: Rare Tracks 1994–2014 (4-LP Set)

Nonesuch Records will release two new Wilco collections on November 17 in conjunction with the influential Chicago band’s 20th anniversary: Alpha Mike Foxtrot, a 4-CD/4-LP/digital-box-set of rare studio and live recordings collected from the band’s extensive audio archives, and What’s Your 20?, is a 2-CD/digital compilation of essential tracks culled from the band’s previously released studio recordings.

Both collections are produced by Grammy-nominated producer Cheryl Pawelski, co-founder of Omnivore Recordings, whose credits include Big Star’s Keep an Eye on the Sky, The Band’s A Musical History, and Townes Van Zandt’s Sunshine Boy: The Unheard Studio Sessions and Demos 1971–1972. These are the first compilations of Wilco music of any kind.  Pre-orders of Alpha Mike Foxtrot include a free instant download of “A Magazine Called Sunset,” a rarity that Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy calls “a mysterious omission from an official recorded output and a real attempt at complete pop music.”

“Like a lot of fans, I had collected these straggling tracks over the past two decades of following Wilco’s every move,” Pawelski said. “Alpha Mike Foxtrot includes almost every unique, essential performance that appeared on soundtracks, tribute albums and B-sides—and there are probably a few surprises for even the sharpest collector. This set presents an alternate history of the band, kind of a sideways view, and ultimately, it’s a super-fun listening experience.”

Alpha Mike Foxtrot features 64 pages of liner notes that include track-by-track recollections from Tweedy, notes by band members Nels Cline and John Stirratt, and reflections from members of Wilco’s extended professional family. The booklet also showcases dozens of archival and never-before-seen photos from a wide array of photographers chronicling all phases of the band’s career.

Rhyton 'Kykeon' Vinyl Pre-Order

Rhyton is a group of experienced sonic voyagers and their music is defined by divine mixture: electric and acoustic sources meld to form one sound, and when Rhyton plays, they play as one mind. The trio on Kykeon, their third album, is David Shuford (aka D. Charles Speer and of NNCK), Jimy SeiTang (Stygian Stride), and Rob Smith (Pigeons), each member providing essential building blocks for the interplanetary vibrations they conjure as a whole.

Kykeon literally means “to stir, to mix” in Greek, but was also a drink created by the ancients that had psychoactive properties, an apt name for the radical concoctions contained herein. While previous Rhyton albums were recorded generally in improvised first takes, preserving the freshness and exploiting their generous talents of spontaneous composition, Kykeon was carefully arranged while still retaining the unfettered vibe that has made their music so potent. Shuford’s melodic turns on the bouzouki, electro-saz, and guitar burst forth in the mix with a commanding intensity, while SeiTang’s bass and organ and Smith’s drums drive the pieces into unknown territory. There is an undeniable groove to many of the songs, showing the distant relation between Greek traditions, psychedelia, and the progressive boogie of Shuford’s work with The Helix. Rhyton exists on its own plane in the Brooklyn underground, forging its own more worldly path to psychedelic transcendence.

Kykeon was recorded at the legendary Black Dirt Studios (Jack Rose, Steve Gunn, The Black Twig Pickers, etc) in upstate New York with their long-time engineer Jason Meagher.

Scheduled for releases on November 18th.  CD version limited to 300 copies with hand-applied wrap around artwork. LP version pressed on virgin vinyl with free download card.

Untold - That Horn Track / Dettmann Remix (Bleep)

Earlier this year, Bleep celebrated its 10 year birthday with a compilation album of 14 exclusive tracks from Fuck Buttons, Oneohtrix Point Never, Autechre, Nathan Fake, Lone, Gas, Modeselektor, Dabrye, Nosaj Thing, U-Ziq and Byetone.

A stand-out track from that compilation was Untold's incredible 'That Horn Track'. After being premiered on Pearson Sound's excellent Resident Advisor mix, on release, the track gained further play from Mary-Anne Hobbs, James Blake and Tessela on their respective BBC Radio shows and residencies.

Now finally seeing a single release, Bleep invited Berlin techno royalty Marcel Dettmann to remix the track for the flip side of the 12". Having formerly released on their Green Series techno project, Marcel returns to Bleep in glorious form as he transforms Untold's hectic original composition into a slow-building sublime exercise in dread-techno production.

Revocation Double LP 'Deathless' Pre-Order

Revocation have spent the last eight years converting fans to their cause with four full length albums, an EP with Scion AV, and a charismatic live show led by guitarist/vocalist Dave Davidson. The Boston-based band also features the staggeringly talented lineup of: Dan Gargiulo on guitar, Brett Bamberger on bass, and Phil Dubois on drums. Revocation has firmly been established as one of the genre's finest and will continue their campaign as part of the Metal Blade Records roster. Their fifth album, "Deathless," is a fitting debut for the label, and a definitive statement of intent from the band. The artwork for "Deathless" was hand painted by internationally recognized tattoo artist Tom Strom.

"Deathless" was recorded with acclaimed producer Zeuss at Planet Z studios in Massachusetts. The album is ten tracks of ambitious, catchy, and undeniably heavy material. Musically, cuts like "Madness Opus" showcase a more deliberate Revocation - restrained, if even moderately so, to deliver a slow, near-dirge like track. Alternatively, the title track highlights the diversity of Davidson's vocals with a catchy chorus. It's an ear worm the likes of which the band had only previously hinted. The rest of the album offers a refreshing variety of music and truly feels like an "album", rather than a collection of similar tracks.

This is a refinement, achieved only through years of focusing on their craft.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRE-ORDER ITEM. Orders will ship as soon as stock is received.

FUNKADELIC - MAGGOT BRAIN

Maggot Brain is the third studio album by the American funk band Funkadelic, released in 1971 on Westbound Records. It was the last album that featured the original Funkadelic lineup; shortly after Maggot Brain was recorded, Tawl Ross, Eddie Hazel, Billy Nelson, and Tiki Fulwood left the band for various reasons. The album incorporates musical elements of psychedelic music, rock, gospel, and soul, with significant variation between each track.Pitchfork Media named it the 17th best album of the 1970s. In 2012, Rolling Stone ranked the album at number 479 on its list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Old 97′s Debut Gets An Expanded 20th Anniversary Reissue!

The Old 97’s burst onto the alt-country scene in 1994 with their debut, Hitchhike To Rhome. To celebrate this anniversary, Omnivore Recordings is proud to reissue Hitchhike with an expanded release on 2 -CD, Digital, and—for the first time—on double LP!

When band member, and set co-producer, Ken Bethea was revisiting the original tapes for this reissue, he discovered a whopping eight extra tracks cut at the album sessions—many of which the band hadn’t even remembered recording. It seemed the perfect time and place to bring those previously unissued songs to light and add the tracks from their first four song demo cassette to round out the early picture of the 97’s.

The 2-CD version of Hitchhike To Rhome contains the original album, coupled with a 2nd disc of those 12 rare and unreleased tracks, many mixed from the original multi-tracks for the first time by longtime Old 97’s engineer Rip Rowan. The double LP (limited edition first pressing on translucent orange vinyl) features the LP on 3 sides with 6 of the recently unearthed tracks on the 4th. The download card included gives the buyer the complete 2-CD program. Both formats include rare photos, memorabilia and notes from Bethea.

From the Too Far To Care reissue complete with demos, (also available separately on vinyl as They Made A Monster), to their sessions with the great Waylon Jennings, Omnivore continues to add to the Old 97’s legacy with this integral, early part of their history and catalog.

Steve Gunn 'Way Out Weather' Vinyl Release

Way Out Weather was mixed by Jeff Zeigler and features appearances from Thrill Jockey artists Mary Lattimore, Jimy SeiTang (Rhyton, Stygian Stride), Nathan Bowles (The Black Twig Pickers), and Jim Elkington (Brokeback, The Zincs)  This preternaturally intuitive and inventive band allowed Gunn to sculpt the album as a composer and colorist as well as a player. The cascading runs of “Milly’s Garden,” the menacing urgency of “Drifter,” and the alien, galvanic syncopation of album closer “Tommy’s Congo” (the latter unlike anything Gunn has heretofore recorded) display a thrilling mastery of heavier, increasingly kinetic full-band arrangements. His vocals throughout are more present, commanding, and refined, revealing a restrained but highly nuanced baritone capable of remarkable grace. Way Out Weather is Steve’s career-defining statement to date. Lightning changes things; the soul burns."

Pressed on 150 gram virgin vinyl and packaged in an old style tip-on jacket with full-color inner sleeve and digital download coupon.

HANDSOME JACK 'Do What Comes Naturally' On Amazing Starburst Vinyl

This is one of the prettiest ones we've done. Each one slightly different, hand pressed. You will want to hang it on your wall, so get the black vinyl version too..! HANDSOME JACK “Do What Comes Naturally” Some people call it a vibe and some people call it a groove. We call it boogie soul. It’s the sound of HANDSOME JACK on their new album “Do What Comes Naturally”.

Produced by Zachary Gabbard of the BUFFALO KILLERS and featuring Bob Nave (of the legendary Lemon Pipers) on hammond organ, among others, the music of this album seamlessly flows through deep dark mid-tempo boogies, smoky upbeat burners, and soulful feel-good rockers all with a natural ease. HANDSOME JACK hails from Buffalo NY and began as a blues garage rock band. After high school they moved out of the garage and developed their sound into a natural soulful boogie that remains rooted in raw blues. They’ve shared the stage with The Sheepdogs, Blue Cheer, Gov’t Mule, J. Geils, to name a few. With scuttling drums, Nico-ish backing vocals and the c*cksure twang of lead man Jamison Passuite, Handsome Jack are so cool it hurts. - CLASSIC ROCK Titled “Echoes,” the track is a heavy, road house slow burner, touching on influences from the Rolling Stones to the Black Keys, and is best served in a dark bar with a shot of whiskey or two. - BUFFALO BLOG They've made "Do What Comes Naturally" into a celebration of laid-back but serious partying, and it'll make a fine soundtrack for your next celebration of the boogie. - ALL MUSIC

The New Pornographers 'Twin Cinema' Vinyl

The third album from Vancouver pop maestros The New Pornographers continues to feature Neko Case and Dan Bejar (Destroyer) as well as new vocalists Kathryn Calder and Nora O'Connor. Fans of  Mass Romantics kinkiness will find immediate appeal, as will those partial to Electric Version's drive. Yet the songs on Twin Cinema veer more toward the rocking and the personal than the sugar of the earlier work. Chief singer / songwriter A.C. Newman has absorbed not just the mechanics of classic songwriting - but the heart, while indulging his admiration of demented current bands like Fiery Furnaces and Frog Eyes. Expect to hear influences from the Moody Blues, Tubeway Army, Wings, Eno, the Stranglers, 10cc and other greats, all filtered through Newmans warped worldview.

Boards of Canada Hi Scores Vinyl Reissue

The second EP from everyone’s favourite bunker-dwelling brothers was - unbelievably - an even tighter mix than their first, with the title track adding a sizzling digital beat to eerie pads; ‘Turquoise Hexagon Sun’ plucking at wobbling keyboards and shuffling drum programs, and ‘June 9th’ foretelling the date of their 2013 comeback - some 17 years before it happened. Culminating in the ‘Porcelain’-like cuteness of ‘Everything You Do Is A Balloon’, this record is a must-own.

This record feels like home.

Zookeeper 'Pink Chalk' Vinyl Available

Zookeeper’s triumphant return shouldn’t be overshadowed by the reunion of ringleader/frontman Chris Simpson’s legendary project Mineral- a band who played a pivotal role in bringing emo into the mainstream in the mid to late nineties. Indeed, the two are very different animals, and while Mineral may bask in the warm wave of nostalgia, Zookeeper is still Simpson’s most evocative and mature vehicle.

On their latest effort, Pink Chalk, Simpson’s voice guides us through an orchestra of soft landscapes painted by piano, guitar, lap steel, horns, and percussion that will likely garner comparisons to Neutral Milk Hotel, Belle and Sebastian, and Wilco.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

from our friends at LightInTheAttic

Native North America (Vol. 1): Aboriginal Folk, Rock, and Country 1966–1985 (Limited Color Vinyl) Pre-Order

Largely unheard, criminally undocumented, but at their core, utterly revolutionary, the recordings of the diverse North American Aboriginal community will finally take their rightful place in our collective history in the form of Native North America (Vol. 1): Aboriginal Folk, Rock, and Country 1966–1985. An anthology of music that was once near-extinct and off-the-grid is now available for all to hear, in what is, without a doubt, Light In The Attic’s most ambitious and historically significant project in the label’s 12-year journey.

Native North America (Vol. 1) features music from the Indigenous peoples of Canada and the northern United States, recorded in the turbulent decades between 1966 to 1985. It represents the fusion of shifting global popular culture and a reawakening of Aboriginal spirituality and expression. The majority of this material has been widely unavailable for decades, hindered by lack of distribution or industry support and by limited mass media coverage, until now. You’ll hear Arctic garage rock from the Nunavik region of northern Quebec, melancholy Yup’ik folk from Alaska, and hushed country blues from the Wagmatcook First Nation reserve in Nova Scotia. You’ll hear echoes of Neil Young, Velvet Underground, Leonard Cohen, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Johnny Cash, and more among the songs, but injected with Native consciousness, storytelling, poetry, history, and ceremony.

The stories behind the music presented on Native North America (Vol. 1) range from standard rock-and-roll dreams to transcendental epiphanies. They have been collected with love and respect by Vancouver-based record archaeologist and curator Kevin “Sipreano” Howes in a 15-year quest to unearth the history that falls between the notes of this unique music. Tirelessly, Howes scoured obscure, remote areas for the original vinyl recordings and the artists who made them, going so far as to send messages in Inuktitut over community radio airwaves in hopes that these lost cultural heroes would resurface.

With cooperation and guidance from the artists, producers, family members, and behind the scenes players, Native North America (Vol. 1) sheds real light on the painful struggles and deep traditions of the greater Indigenous community and the significance of its music. The songs speak of joy and spirituality, but also tell of real tragedy and strife, like that of Algonquin/Mohawk artist Willy Mitchell, whose music career was sparked by a bullet to the head from the gun of a trigger-happy police officer, or those of Inuk singer-songwriter Willie Thrasher, who was robbed of his family and traditional Inuit culture by the residential school system.

Considering the financially motivated destruction of our environment, the conservative political landscape, and corporate bottom-line dominance, it’s bittersweet to report that the revolutionary songs featured on Native North America hold as much meaning today as when they were originally recorded. Dedicated to legendary Métis singer-songwriter and poet Willie Dunn, featured on the anthology but who sadly passed away during its making, Native North America (Vol. 1) is only the beginning. A companion set featuring a crucial selection of folk, rock, and country from the United States’ Lower 48 and Mexico is currently in production.

Waxwork 'Trick 'r Treat' Score Deluxe Vinyl Release Pre-Order

Waxwork Records is thrilled to release, for the first time ever on vinyl, Douglas Pipes’ score to the 2007 Halloween anthology film, TRICK ‘R TREAT. Directed by Michael Dougherty (X-Men 2, Superman Returns), TRICK ‘R TREAT has become a modern cult classic and has become traditional October viewing alongside classic horror films such as John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN, and has earned a 24-hour rotational airing in 2013. Starring Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, and Dylan Baker, TRICK ‘R TREAT has won over fans and critics alike with it’s maliciously whimsical approach of breaking down Halloween traditions in one of the most impressive horror films to date.

Waxwork Records has worked closely with Michael Dougherty, Douglas Pipes, Legendary Pictures, Warner Bros., and La La Land Records to create the ultimate TRICK ‘R TREAT soundtrack experience.

This expanded double LP features over an hour of music that has been mastered for vinyl and supervised by the composer. For art duties, Waxwork brought on none other than the incredibly talented Francensco Francavilla (Afterlife With Archie, The Black Beetle). Francavilla has worked as an in-house artist for both Marvel and DC Comics, and has created the full LP packaging artwork with approval from director Michael Dougherty, himself.

If that wasn’t enough, at the request of Michael Dougherty, Waxwork has acquired the full audio stems from the film to create a full bonus Spooky Sound FX album perfect for a haunted house, or to spook your neighbors this Halloween season. Like the classic Disney LPs such as “Chilling, Thrilling Sounds From The Haunted House”, the included TRICK ‘R TREAT spooky sound-fx album will take the listener through the streets of Warren Valley, Ohio on a cold Halloween night filled with vampires, werewolves, rock quarry zombies, and Sam himself. The entire spooky sound-fx album has been constructed, mixed, and edited by Evan Chen, the sound designer on Michael Dougherty’s 1996 animated short SEASON’S GREETINGS which features Sam’s first appearance, and inspired the film TRICK ‘R TREAT.

 LP package details include:
  •  Deluxe heavyweight tip-on gatefold jacket with satin coating
  •  Full artwork and design by Francesco Francavilla
  •  Liner notes by director Michael Dougherty and composer Douglas Pipes

Jethro Tull WAR CHILD The 40th Anniversary Edition Available

In 1974, Jethro Tull announced plans for WarChild, a multi-faceted project that was to encompass a feature-length film, a soundtrack album, as well a new album from the band. In October of that year, Tull released a 10-song album that would climb to #2 in the U.S. and the top 15 in the U.K., but the film and accompanying soundtrack were shelved.

Originally released in 1974, WarChild features one of the group’s most prolific lineups and includes Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, John Evans, Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond and Barrie Barlow. Unlike its predecessors – Thick As A Brick and A Passion Play – which featured 40-odd minutes of continuous music, WarChild marked a return to songs of a more conventional length, including the FM-radio staple, “Bungle In The Jungle.” The new Theatre Edition unearths a trio of unreleased recordings: “Tomorrow Was Today,” “Good Godmother,” and a different arrangement of “WarChild” recorded after the version on the final album.

This brand new vinyl edition contains a new Steven Wilson stereo remix of the original album   Limited 180gram Vinyl LP

PETER TOSH - BUSH DOCTOR

Bush Doctor is the third studio album by Jamaican reggae musician Peter Tosh. Along with Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer he was one of the core members of the band The Wailers (1963–1974). Tosh also established himself as a successful solo artist. In 1978 he was contracted by Rolling Stones Records and the album Bush Doctor was released in the same year, introducing Tosh to a larger audience.

The single from the album, a cover version of The Temptations song "Don't Look Back", performed as a duet with Mick Jagger, made Tosh one of the best-known reggae artists. Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is also featured on the album, playing guitar on "Bush Doctor" and "Stand Firm."

DJ KRUSH - THE MESSAGE AT THE DEPTH

In the world of independent Hip Hop, artists either trailblaze like Quasimoto and El-P or salute their forebears like Blackalicious and Jurassic 5. Japanese breaks maestro DJ Krush is a curious exception to the rule; he seems virtually unaffected by trends yet encompasses many of them in his productions, and offers something different with virtually each release.

Similar to lauded underground labels from Def Jux to Big Dada, The Message At The Depth is underground rap for the digital age, far removed from the moldy crates and dusty beats of Krush's Mo' Wax classic Strictly Turntablized. His beats are digital, heavily resampled and quantized, splintering off like drum'n'bass patterns but possessing a depth and clarity not seen since the heyday of Massive Attack.

And with far fewer collaborations here than on his last record, Zen, there's more room to hear Krush at his best. A pair of instrumentals, the dark breaks symphonies "Sanity Requiem" and "The Blackhole" are added by high-profile vocal features of Antipop Consortium and Anticon, in the stoner nightmare "Song for John Walker". Ace rapping comes from Japanese MC Inden, who gets his point across on "Toki No Tabiji (Journey of Time)" without needing to resort to English.

DREAM THEATER - AWAKE

Awake is the third studio album by American progressive Metal/Rock band Dream Theater and was originally released in 1994. After the success of Images And Words, Dream Theater was eager to work on fresh material and retreated to the studio in May 1994. John Purdell and Duane Baron produced, engineered and mixed the album. The album's cover was designed by the band and features numerous references to the album's lyrics. The album peaked at 32 on the US Billboard 200.

Awake was the last Dream Theater album to feature keyboardist Kevin Moore, who announced his decision to leave the band during the recording of the album. Dream Theater auditioned for keyboardists to replace Moore for the upcoming Awake world tour and eventually hired Derek Sherinian.

"Lie", "Caught in a Web" and "The Silent Man" were released as singles. There is no title track on the album, but the lyric "Awake" appears in the songs "Innocence Faded" and "The Silent Man."

LAMB - BACKSPACE UNWIND

Backspace Unwind is the long awaited new LAMB album. The sixth album of the electronic music duo contains 10 new songs written by Andy Barlow & Lou Rhodes with 4 featuring string arrangements by Tom Trapp, who also conducted the string section for the recording session at Air Lyndhurst Studios in London.

'Making this album has been a journey of discovery in so many ways', says Lou. 'After making music together over a period of almost 20 years (with a 5 year hiatus to take a breath) it's reassuring that new routes and approaches seem to abound. Over those years I think we've learnt that this journey needs no map; in fact tearing that map up, at every twist and turn, has become our regular gleeful practice.'

The LP version of Backspace Unwind contains a bonus track that's not available elsewhere ("As Satellites Go By" Piano Version*). This fantastic package also contains a free CD copy!
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Gatefold sleeve
  • Vinyl only bonus track: "As Satellites Go By (Piano Version)"
  • Includes free CD copy of the album

John Mayall: A Special Life Vinyl Pre-Order

Forty Below Records announces an October 27 release date for the special gate fold two-LP vinyl set from the legendary “Godfather of British Blues,” John Mayall, of his universally-acclaimed album, A Special Life, distributed by Sony/RED. The new album was recorded last November at Entourage Studios in North Hollywood and was produced by Mayall, with co-production, engineering and mixing by Eric Corne. A Special Life also boasts original cover art and design created by John Mayall.

Reviews of A Special Life have been over-the-top and acknowledge Mayall’s lofty place in blues history. “After over a half-century of playing the blues, John Mayall is a genuine master, and he has certainly led A Special Life,” said Living Blues magazine. “I’d easily put this one among Mayall’s best efforts – and that includes Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton, A Hard Road, and Blues From Laurel Canyon – so run, don’t walk, to your record store come release day for a copy of A Special Life,!” wrote About.com. And UK magazine, Uncut, summed up its review by stating the obvious: “Mayall delivers everything with utter conviction.”

The aptly-titled A Special Life serves as further testament to John Mayall’s boundless talent, vitality and ever-dynamic personality. Along with his accomplished band, he goes back to his roots on the new album with an eclectic mix of songs centered in the blues, but with diversions into rock and Americana.

Dead Can Dance 'Spiritchaser' Reissue Available From MOFI

The sonic equivalent of an engaging journey down the Nile River, Spiritchaser is Dead Can Dance’s unforgettable swan song. The percussive-based 1996 set finds the world-fusion group fashioning thematic songs around rhythmic structures and tribal beats, creating atmospheric soundscapes that take the listener through Africa, South America, England, and Europe—sometimes within the same movement.

Blurring the lines between styles and genres so that they become irrelevant, Dead Can Dance members Lisa Gerrard and Gerald Perry generate the illusion of being lost amidst a peaceful rain forest that’s yet to be discovered by man. Spiritchaser is the sound of a lost culture, where ethereal singing, overlapping harmonies, and trance-like tempos serve to calm, relax, and enchant. Gerrard’s phonetic singing—often taking the form of prayer—is grand albeit understated, as much spiritual as it is natural. Just like the music itself.

Exotic instrumentation abounds, but nothing seems out of place. A Turkish clarinet, finger cymbals, and a borrowed melody from the Beatles’ “Within You Without You” informs the mystery of tracks such as “Niereka,” which epitomizes Dead Can Dance’s incomparable blend of ancient and modern, alien and familiar, spooky and freeing, serene and intense. Throughout,Spiritchaser strives for a transcendental sense in which music speaks to a higher power and greater purpose than most artists would like to believe—or dare capture. Dead Can Dance’s ambition extended to the production.
