Dashing Suns - Really Like You

Dead Confederate - Sugar (Vinyl) Buy Dead Confederate Here

Winter storms are punishingly cold and uncomfortable, but are an important source of water for spring growth. Likewise for Dead Confederate, the series of New Jersey blizzards that besieged the recording of sophomore album Sugar (a reference to the record snowfall) also heralded growth from the darker, somber realm of their critically acclaimed Wrecking Ball. With an evolving approach and focused, streamlined sound, and a guest appearance from Dinosaur Jr. frontman J. Mascis, Sugar explores new styles beyond the aching, bleak psychadelia of the debut.

Limes - Rhinestone River (Vinyl) Buy The Limes Here

VINYL FORMAT. Memphis is home to several of rock's most endearingly off-kilter rock storytellers, from Jim Dickinson to Jeffrey Evans to Ross Johnson. To that list, one can now add Shawn Cripps, leader of The Limes. On the band's debut full-length, Rhinestone River, Cripps retains the musical talents of Harlan T. Bobo, who previously helped on The Limes' "Rock 'n' Roll Heart" single. Bobo's hypnotic keyboards perfectly complement Cripps's gritty guitar work and vocals, particularly on "Sounds Like a Shimmy." Rhinestone River also features contributions by Memphis scene stalwarts Ross Johnson, Paul Buchignani (Afghan Whigs, Bobo's backing band), Alicja Trout (Lost Sounds, River City Tanlines) and Bruce Saltmarsh ('68 Comeback, Porch Ghouls). The title track, with its wobbly gait and lyrics like "Sitting on this barstool, sweating the rhinestone river," can induce secondhand drunkenness in anyone within earshot. "Rhinestone River" is the closest an American band has gotten to the pickled poetry of the Country Teasers. The momentum and melody of "Bottom of the Hole" unfurl like the narrative thrust of a bourbon-soaked anecdote at two in the morning. The album's crown jewel is the closing track, "Last Year." Cater-cornered rock guitars and Cripps's talkin' vocal style build up to a woozy climax that culminates in a feral "woo-hoo." Like the other great songs on Rhinestone River, it threatens to fall apart several times but Cripps, with a little help from his friends and his engaging personality, holds it all together.

Mirah - Gone Are All the Days (Vinyl) Buy Mirah Here

VINYL FORMAT. When it first appeared on (a)spera in 2009, the first solo album from Mirah since 2004, "Gone Are All the Days" was a song of sorrow with a little swing and a bit of hope. Live performances of the track took the swing and added a disco beat; an energetic pulse that alleviates sadness with glittery energy and an empowered delivery. When unwrapped, this 12" single comes in four parts: a studio recording ("Disco Beat") including a newly constructed musical arrangement featuring a punchy bassline, a sly guitar, bongos, viola and a re-recorded vocal performance by Mirah; an isolated instrumental track; an additional dance remix by Christopher Doulgeris of Hooliganship; and an a capella vocal track. These "Days" are brighter, and the future is happening already. Be a part of it.

Ra Ra Riot - The Orchard (Vinyl) Buy Ra Ra Riot Here

VINYL FORMAT. Ra Ra Riot's debut full-length, The Rhumb Line, was released in the summer of 2008, and it brought with it some beautiful and sparkly ruminations on the fragile things in life (namely life, death and love) and much critical praise. The band retreated to a country property in upstate New York to write and record, and now announce The Orchard. Anticipation is feverish for new music, and the new album is an incredibly self-assured step for the band, delivering both hook-laden pop jams like first single "Boy" and the new-but-familiar-to-live-audiences 'Too Dramatic," and ruminative slow-burns like the Anton Chekov/Kate Bush-inspired "The Orchard" and album-closer "Keep It Quiet."
