Record Store Day Recap

Record Store Day Retailers Report Big Spikes, Best-Ever Sales

Billboard talked to Record Store Day co-founder Michael Kurtz about exclusives showing up on Ebay even before the event took place. Kurtz explained: "Regarding the eBay stuff that was up last week: We checked and the vast majority [of sellers] were people who did not have the releases -- we know this because they had not arrived in the stores yet -- but were flippers who presented themselves as having them, with (presumably) the plan to go into the stores to get them and then flip them. This is a violation of eBay rules and we’ve reported them."

new releases from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

Beverley Martyn - The Phoenix and the Turtle

Beverley Martyn recorded her first single "Babe I'm Leaving You" in 1965, and was chosen to launch Deram Records one year later with the Randy Newman penned single "Happy New Year". She contributed to the Simon & Garfunkel album Bookends and appeared at the Monterey Pop Festival on 16 June 1967. In 1969 she met John Martyn, whom she later married, and as a duo they issued two albums, Stormbringer! and The Road To Ruin. At various times, Martyn has worked with Levon Helm, Jimmy Page, Richard Thompson, Davy Graham and Sandy Denny. In December 2013, Beverley appeared at the Royal Festival Hall as part of a celebration of Bert Jansch, alongside friends and contemporaries such as Donovan and Robert Plant.

April 2014 will see the release of her new album entitled The Phoenix And The Turtle. Described by Beverley as a very personal album, it features songs written throughout her entire career, from her very first song, "Sweet Joy", to the previously unrecorded Nick Drake & Beverley Martyn song "Reckless Jane". The Phoenix and the Turtle is Beverley's first album in fourteen years and features contributions from ex-Counting Crows bass player Matt Malley, and ex-Los Lobos drummer Victor Bisetti.

BOB DYLAN - TIME OUT OF MIND

This is the 30th Bob Dylan album, released in 1997. Time Out of Mind is hailed as one of Dylan's best albums, and it went on to win three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year in 1998.

The album features a particularly atmospheric sound, the work of producer (and past Dylan collaborator) Daniel Lanois, whose innovative work with carefully placed microphones and strategic mixing. Sonically, the album is reminiscent of Oh Mercy, the last album Dylan recorded with producer Daniel Lanois, but Time Out of Mind has a grittier foundation - by and large, the songs are bitter and resigned, and Dylan gives them appropriately anguished performances.

Original vinyl copies of Time Out Of Mind were made in small numbers, making this official reissue a much needed one!

FILTER - SHORT BUS

Short Bus is the debut album from Filter. The alternative/industrial rock group was formed by orginal Nine Inch Nails touring guitarist Richard Patrick and guitarist/programmer Brian Liesegang.

The album was originally released in 1995 and includes the hit single "Hey Man Nice Shot". The track was heavily played by alternative radio and MTV in the States and soon reached gold status. "Hey Man Nice Shot" was also included on the soundtrack for the movie Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight in 1995 before Short Bus was released. In need of a live band to tour, Patrick and Liesegang recruited Geno Lenardo on guitar, Frank Cavanagh on bass, and Matt Walker on drums, who are also featured in the video for the album's second single, "Dose". In support of the Short Bus album, Filter toured with The Smashing Pumpkins in Europe.

Dave Mason - It's Like You Never Left

It's Like You Never Left is Dave Mason's fourth solo studio album and the follow up to the album Headkeeper (1972). David Mason first found fame with the rock band Traffic, after which he pursued a rather successful solo career. Mason has played and recorded with many of the era's most notable pop and rock musicians, including Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Graham Nash and Steve Winwood.

It's Like You Never Left was originally released in 1973 peaking at #50 on the Billboard Pop Albums charts. On the album Graham Nash sang harmony vocals on "Baby, Please," "Every Woman," and a new version of "Head Keeper". Stevie Wonder plays harmonica on "The Lonely One" and George Harrison (under the pseudonym "Son of Harry"  for contractual reasons) contributed slide guitar to "If You've Got Love. The album is finally available again on 180 gram audiophile vinyl in a beautiful gatefold sleeve.

He has sold well over 70 million records worldwide. His score for Sergio Leone's Once Upon A Time In The West is one of the top 5 best-selling original instrumental scores in the world today, with about 10 million copies sold.

ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK - DALLAS BUYERS CLUB

Dallas Buyers Club follows the Oscar winning performance by Matthew McConaughey portraying the '80s real life character Ron Woodroof, who's suddenly being diagnosed as H.I.V.-positive and given 30 days to live. Yet he will not, and does not, accept a death sentence. A crash course of research reveals a lack of approved treatments and medications in the U.S., so Ron crosses the border into Mexico. There, he learns about alternative treatments and begins smuggling them into the U.S.

An outsider to the gay community, Ron finds an unlikely ally in fellow AIDS patient and transsexual Rayon (another Oscar Winning performance by Jared Leto). They establish a "buyers club," where H.I.V.-positive people pay monthly dues for access to the newly acquired supplies. With a growing community of friends and clients, Ron fights for dignity, education, and acceptance. In the years following his diagnosis, the embattled Lone Star loner lives life to the fullest like never before.

The soundtrack to triple Academy Award winning feature film Dallas Buyers Club contains songs by Shuggie Otis, My Morning Jacket, T. Rex and actor/singer Jared Leto's Thirty Seconds To Mars. The first 1000 copies of this double LP are uniquely pressed on Gold and Blue vinyl (each record a different colour!).

THELONIOUS MONK - MONK'S DREAM

Monk's Dream is the first album jazz musician Thelonious Monk released on Columbia Records. It was recorded in 4 days in autumn 1962 and issued a year later. The Thelonious Monk Quartet consisted of Monk (piano), Charlie Rouse (tenor sax), John Ore (bass), and Frankie Dunlop (drums). Jazz scholars and enthusiasts alike also heralded this combo as the best Monk had been involved with for several years. Although he would perform and record supported by various other musicians, the tight dimensions that these four shared has rarely been equaled in any genre.

On tracks such as "Five Spot Blues" and "Bolivar Blues," Rouse and Dunlop demonstrate their uncanny abilities by squeezing in well-placed instrumental fills, while never getting hit by the unpredictable rhythmic frisbees being tossed about by Monk. Augmenting the six quartet recordings are two solo sides: "Just a Gigolo" and "Body and Soul." Most notable about Monk's solo work is how much he retained the same extreme level of intuition throughout the nearly two decades that separate these recordings from his initial renderings in the late '40s.  On 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Neil Young A Letter Home Limited Edition Box Set

Neil Young will release a CD, digital album and a Limited Edition Deluxe Box Set of his recent vinyl album A Letter Home, out on Reprise Records on May 27th.

Young describes the album as "an unheard collection of rediscovered songs from the past recorded on ancient electro-mechanical technology captures and unleashes the essence of something that could have been gone forever."

According to the record label:  “The album begins with Neil recording a spoken letter to his late mother, informing her of his personal and present state of affairs which sets the tone and atmosphere for the duration of the album. He does this once again at the beginning of Side 2 in a way which could explain why he’s selected these particular songs to record. In essence, this presentation is, as its title implies, A Letter Home from Neil. This is a deeply personal and expressive listening experience which is as real and raw emotionally as it is sonically and yet light of touch in its form and flow”.

Half Japanese Releasing First LP in 13 years

Limited edition Orange/Blue split color 7" Out Now!

We are extremely excited to announce that Joyful Noise has signed legendary punk band Half Japanese, who will be releasing their first album in 13 years this summer. If you are unfamiliar with this band, we will get you caught up: Half Japanese is one of the most influential bands of all time. Fronted by our "Artist in Residence" Jad Fair, Half Japanese spearheaded the DIY and Lo-Fi movements, influencing countless bands such as Sonic Youth, Neutral Milk Hotel, Daniel Johnston, and perhaps most notably, Kurt Cobain (who ranked Half Japanese amongst his top 50 favorites, had them open the "In Utero" tour, and was wearing their t-shirt when he died). Without exaggeration, Half Japanese is one of the most important bands in the history of music, and it's an absolute honor to release their first album in over a decade.

To give you a surprise sneak peek at the new album, we are releasing a limited edition 7" featuring two new songs: "Refreshing" and "Do It Now". These are alternate recordings of songs which will be included on the upcoming LP. Available immediately to whet your appetite.

Limited to just 500 hand-numbered copies on Orange / Blue split-color vinyl, this 7" ships immediately. We have less than 250 available, so don't wait!
