In 2006, Bill Miller, who played piano with Frank Sinatra's combo for over 40 years, died at age 91. You can hear him on "My Way," "Strangers in the Night" and "Young at Heart."
R&B pioneer Rosco Gordon died in 2002 (age 68).
Singer and lyricist Roger Christian died in 1991. Worked with the Beach Boys and co-wrote songs recorded by Jan and Dean.
Herbert Kenny, of doo-wop pioneers the Ink Spots, died in 1992 (age 77).
Jonathan Melvoin, keyboard player with the Smashing Pumpkins, died from a drug overdose in New York City in 1996 (age 34). Band member Jimmy Chamberlin was with Melvoin tried but failed to revive him after Chamberlin was allegedly advised by 911 operators to put Melvoin's head in the shower.
In 1937, composer George Gershwin died from a brain tumor in Beverly Hills, California. He was 38.

In 1951, DJ Alan Freed, working under the name ‘Moondog’ in Cleveland, launched his Moondog Rock n’ Roll Party on WJW Radio. Freed’s promotional initiatives are a big reason the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame is located in the "mistake by the lake."
Joan Baez made her first recording in 1959, a duet with Bob Gibson, which was recorded live at the Newport Folk Festival.
Hollywood Argyles went to #1 on the singles chart in 1960 with “Alley Oop.”
In 1964, the Beatles appeared live on the ABC Television program "Lucky Stars (Summer Spin),” performing “A Hard Day's Night,” “Long Tall Sally,” “Things We Said Today” and “You Can't Do That.” To avoid the crowd of fans waiting for them, The Beatles arrived at the Teddington Studio Centre by boat, traveling down the River Thames.
David Bowie released his album Space Oddity in 1969. It’s timed to coincide with the first moon landing.
The soundtrack album “Woodstock” started a four-week run at #1 on the US album chart in 1970. It is the first triple-LP to do so.
In 1970, the Who unleashed the definitive Hard Rock version of “Summertime Blues.” Eddie Cochran’s version is still the best.
Also in 1970, Three Dog Night started a two-week run at #1 in the US with their version of the Randy Newman song “Mamma Told Me Not To Come.”
The Bruce Springsteen Band opened for Humble Pie at the Sunshine In, Asbury Park in New Jersey in 1971. After the show an impressed Peter Frampton from Humble Pie, tells Springsteen and the band he'd like to have them open for them on a national basis. Frampton also said he would be happy to get the band an audition with his record label, A & M Records. For no logical reason Springsteen’s manager Tinker West declined both offers on the spot.
A poll in 1991 determined that the most-requested Elvis Presley song is "Jailhouse Rock."

I have just joined on with this club, stop by the site, see what they are doing to help promote vinyl record collecting and join up!

“The Keystone Record Collectors, a non-profit club, is dedicated to the promotion and advancement of the hobby of music collecting”. It was organized by collectors, for collectors, with the express purpose of providing a way for music collectors to obtain knowledge about their hobby and to increase their personal collections in their specific area(s) of interest."
The club is officially 30 years old in 2009 after being organized in September of 1979. Anyone with an interest in music is encouraged to join. The KRC has no restriction as to age, race, national origin, religious preference, or country of residence.
The mailing address for the KRC is P.O. Box 1516, Lancaster, PA 17608. Since officers of the KRC reside in several different counties in Pennsylvania, “headquarters” is generally considered to be South Central Pennsylvania. Yearly dues are $15 and the club offers may benefits including:

Artwork, tracklisting and release date announced for new Ravage album, The End Of Tomorrow
Metal Blade Records has confirmed August 18th as the official release date for THE END OF TOMORROW, the new album from Massachusetts metallers Ravage.
The artwork was handled by the famed artist Ed Repka who is known best for his MEGADETH covers as well as cover art for DEATH, MUNICIPAL WASTE, TOXIC HOLOCAUST and AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE.
According to a press release, “THE EDN OF TOMORROW seamlessly intertwines the sounds of New Wave of British Heavy Metal, late 80’s American Thrash Metal and late 90’s European power metal to showcase the band’s signature style. Metal Churhc Disbanding
Heavy Metal band Metal Church have called it quits after a 28-year career. Their first album was released in 1984 and were touted early in their career by Metallica. Their final album, This Present Wasteland, was released last year.

"There has been far too much frustration and disappointment in trying to keep moving forward. The collapse of our record company, SPV, has made it next to impossible for us continue in any kind of professional manner due to lack of tour support. This decision was not made lightly."

Pearl Jam Announce North American Tour Dates
Pearl Jam has announced that they will play a series of select North American tour dates in support of their ninth studio album, "Backspacer." Scheduled for release in the US on Sunday, September 20, 2009, the album will be released in the US through Target, the exclusive mass retail partner, Pearl Jam's own Ten Club and independent retailers, as well as online through digital, and gaming platforms yet to be announced. Internationally, the album will be available beginning on September 21, 2009, via Universal/Island Records. The first single, "The Fixer," will be released at radio on July 20, 2009.
Pearl Jam's North American dates kick-off in the band's hometown of Seattle with two shows at Key Arena (September 21st and 22nd) and close with two concerts at Philadelphia's historic Spectrum (October 28th and 30th).
Ben Harper and Relentless7 will open all dates except for the Spectrum shows.

Michael Jackson’s Death Might Be Ruled Homicide, Police Chief Says
I have purposely omitted most of the media circus that has surfaced due to the death of Michael Jackson, but this is a very interesting twist to an already sad situation. This from Rolling Stone....
"Investigators probing the death of Michael Jackson are awaiting the results of a toxicology report before determining whether the superstar’s sudden cardiac arrest on June 25th can be ruled an accidental overdose or homicide, Los Angeles Police chief William Bratton told CNN: “We are still awaiting corroboration from the coroner’s office as to cause of death. That is going to be very dependent on the toxicology reports that are due to come back,” Bratton said. “And based on those, we will have an idea of what it is we are dealing [with]: are we dealing with a homicide or are we dealing with accidental overdose?” While Bratton would not confirm what items were seized from Jackson’s home, the chief’s comments make it clear prescription drugs are at the center of the department’s investigation.
CNN also unearthed a 2004 document stating Jackson reportedly took 10 Xanax a night and that the King of Pop asked his own employees to obtain prescription drugs under their own names. The document comes from the statements of two former Jackson bodyguards interviewed by Santa Barbara County law officials when Jackson was awaiting trial in 2005 for child molestation charges."

The late summer releases include all albums in stereo for the first time. PPM, With the Beatles, A Hard Day’s Night, Beatles For Sale, Help!, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour, The Beatles, Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road and Let It Be will include a QuickTime mini-documentary for a limited time.
These will be available separately or as a boxed set. A second boxed set, The Beatles in Mono will contain the first four above that were originally issued in mono on CD plus for the first time the original mono mixes of Help, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper’s…, Magical Mystery Tour, The Beatles and Mono Masters. In addition, Help! and Rubber Soul will include the original 1965 stereo mixes (the first CD go-round featured remixes of those). Each CD includes original UK album art, expanded liner notes and rare photos.
The transfers utilized a ProTools work station operating at 192/24 via a Prism A-D converter, one track at a time. EMI tape did not suffer oxide shedding but dust necessitated head cleaning after each track transfer. All transfers were done using “vintage studio equipment,” which, unfortunately was not specified with the same precision as the digital gear used.
According to the press release, the remastering team decided to “improve” “…where possible… electrical clicks, microphone vocal pops, excessive sibilance and bad edits…so long as it didn’t impact on the original integrity of the songs.”
De-noising technology was used “subtly and sparingly,” on “…less (sic) than five of the 525 minutes of Beatles music…”
However, the press release also contained this sour note: “Finally, as is common with today’s music, overall limiting - to increase the volume level of the CD - has been used, but on the stereo versions only. However, it was unanimously agreed that because of the importance of The Beatles’ music, limiting would be used moderately, so as to retain the original dynamics of the recordings.” Who cares if it’s “common with today’s music”? Today’s music sounds mostly like over-compressed crap.
Before mastering, each song was auditioned several times to locate “…any of the agreed imperfections,” which were then addressed by members of the restoration team.
“Earliest vinyl pressings” and the original CDs were loaded into ProTools for comparison with master tapes during the EQ process. Finished albums were auditioned in studio three—a location familiar to all involved—with further alterations (if necessary) made back in the mastering room and then listened to in yet another location. This process was followed until all 13 albums were completed “…to the team’s satisfaction.”
The Abbey Road Team consisted of Allan Rouse (Project Coordinator), Guy Massey (Recording Engineer), Steve Rooke (Mastering Engineer), Paul Hicks (Recording Engineer), Sean Magee (Mastering Engineer), Sam Okell (Recording Engineer) and Simon Gibson (Audio Restoration Engineer).
Rooke and Magee will be familiar names to many as they appear in mastering credits on may recent LP reissues. Rouse joined EMI in 1971 and frequently worked with Norman (Hurricane) Smith, The Beatles’ first recording engineer. He did the first digital backups of Beatles master tapes (mono, stereo, 4-track and 8-track) in 1991. He was also involved in the 5.1 channel and stereo remixes of Yellow Submarine.
However, Rouse also was involved in the John Lennon album remixes, which most agree sound digitally awful on vinyl. Rouse, Guy Massey and Paul Hicks were responsible for Let It Be…Naked.
Steve Rooke, the studio’s senior mastering engineer, joined Abbey Road in 1983 and worked on all The Beatles’ projects since 1999, including mastering Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Ringo albums.
Audio Restoration Engineer Simon Gibson joined Abbey Road in 1990. His work includes the reissue of George Harrison’s Living in the Material World among other Beatles catalog reissues.
Will there be vinyl? There was nothing in the press release about it, but if there is, probably, in the interest of “uniformity,” they will be mastered from the high resolution, re-EQ’d, “cleaned-up” masters. Why not run the original analogue tapes, which are in such excellent condition and cut DMM or lacquers to give analog fans the “real deal?”
That’s’ a question that needs to be asked. Or how about a series of CDs from needle drops of clean original pressings? That would be an authentic experience for those exiled in the digital domain!

Bird & Animal Names In Rock And Roll History- part twenty

Let’s continue our articles series about “bird” and “animal” group names and artists in rock and roll history, last week we explored some famous ‘dog’ names, this time let’s look at some ‘cat’ and ‘kitten’ names:
A band that was well-known to Smashing Pumpkins fans, the Oklahoma-based Chainsaw Kittens (they opened for the Pumpkins and many other popular acts) built a small following and loyal fan base throughout the 90’s by mixing eclectic pop, glam punk, new wave and bits of British invasion into their repertoire.
Formed in 1989 and fronted by Tyson Meade (former lead singer of the band Defenstration) and signing on with Mammoth records, the band’s debut release “Violent Religion” did not garner much attention. However, after opening up for many of alternative rock’s most popular bands, the Butch Vig-produced album “Flipped Out In Signapore” in 1992, heightened the group’s profile and fans soon began to take notice. Their energetic mix of glam-damaged energy, theatrical extremity and punk rock was never more evident on their follow up EP in 1993 “Angel On The Range;” which introduced a stable rhythm section for the band, bassist Johnson and drummer Eric Harmon.
The group released “Pop Heiress” in 1994, but the hoped for success didn’t materialize, however the band carried on. A self-titled release in 1996 (also known as Oklahoma Speedway) garnered little attention. The group took an extended break while its members pursued other musical endevours and personal projects before returning in 2000 with the release “The All-America.”
Throughout the group’s history, their lyrical content tackled an array of topics including religion, the Stonewall riots, Fellini, Oklahoma, the Menendez brothers and even Oscar Wilde. The band went through many personnel changes but were always maintained by the presence of singer and songwriter Meade. Since the band split up (they were active from 1989-2000) they have gained more fans and have gained attention on such sources as Allmusic as one of the best groups of their era.
Popular among Northern Soul fans, the Chicago soul vocal group the Kittens are more popular now than when they were together and recording. Arranger/producer Johnny Pate (who also worked with the Impressions) signed the group to ABC-Paramount in 1964 and the trio (Thelma Mack, Bernice Wills and Laurel Ross) released several singles including “I Got To Know Him,” “Lookie Lookie,” (among others) and they recorded two singles with Chess in 1968, “Ain’t No More Room” and “Hey Operator.” (there are several other bands that used this moniker, look for future results in upcoming articles!)

Led by Charlie Chesterman (vocals, guitar), Stephen Fredette (guitar), Mac Paul Stanfield (bass), Randall Lee Gibson IV (drums), Burns Stanfield (piano, organ), and multi-instrumentalist Stona Fitch, the band never really hit the mainstream arena, but nonetheless found themselves on the college charts in the late 80s; as the band’s raw, back –to-basics rock arrangements were a fresh sound for campus DJs and college radio.
In 1987, the band’s debut album, “Tiny Days,” produced a great toe-tapping number called “My bay She’s Allright” and the accompanying videos was a staple on MTV’s 120 Minutes weekly show (however Fitch left the band). In 1989, the band cut “Moons Of Jupiter” and was the band’s attempt at a crossover hit, but it was rejected by the music critics. In 1992, she moved to New york and was introduced to New York's 'free-jazz' and experimental music scene. After opening for Liz Phair she was encouraged to record her music by Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) and Tim Foljahn (Two Dollar Guitar) and they played on her first two LP's 1995's "Dear Sir" and 1996's "Myra Lee." She signed with Matador records in 1996 and recorded her third LP, "What Would the Community Think," which spawned a single and music video, "Nude as the News".
However, in late 1996 after a three-month tour to promote the album, she disappeared from the music scene, opting to work as a baby sitter in Portland, Oregon and then relocating to a farmhouse in South Carolina; with a plan to permanently retire from the music business. But during a restless night, she wrote several new songs, the bulk of them making up the LP "Moon Pix." The release was very well recieved by critics and music lovers alike.
After tiring of her own music, she remained busy on a number of projects and by the start of the decade, Marshall's live performances had become erratic and unpredictable. Marshall later admitted that she had a drinking problem, telling HARP magazine in 2006, "I didn't know I was messed up."
In 2003 she resumed releasing more original material with "You Are Free," which featured guest musicians Eddie Vedder, Dave Grohl, and the Dirty Three's Warren Ellis.
Her breakthrough release, "The Greatest" was released in 2006 and found Marshall returning to Memphis, pursuing the sound of the 70s, famed for its sensuous feel and beguiling rhythms. She employed Al Green’s guitarist and songwriting partner Mabon "Teenie" Hodges to play guitar on the whole album (Teenie co-wrote "Love and Happiness" and "Take Me to the River," among other soul classics). With Hodges onboard came his bandmate (and brother) Leroy "Flick" Hodges, who played on half of the album (Memphis A-team bassist Dave Smith supplements). Anchoring the band is Steve Potts, whose reputation on drums was solidified when the surviving members of Booker T. and the MG’s asked him to replace their late drummer, Al Jackson. Other top Memphis musicians guest on keyboards, horns and strings.
But following its release, Marshall had cancel previously arranged shows in North America and Europe as she was struggling with a relationship and had other personal issues. Ultimately, she utilized the self-imposed hiatus to recover from what she described as a "psychotic break" that had left her feeling suicidal and was brought on by mental exhaustion and alcohol abuse.
At the end of 2006, she formed a new band with whom she toured and recorded with throughout 2007. Her new band, The Dirty Delta Blues Band features Judah Bauer (from Blues Explosion), Gregg Foreman (The Delta 72), Erik Paparazzi (Lizard Music), and Jim White (from Dirty Three). The band recorded an album of covers called “Jukebox, “which was released on January 22, 2008.
Recently, Marshall's performance style has been said to be much more enthusiastic and professional. In fact, in a recent magazine article Marshall states that her newfound musical collaborators and sobriety are largely responsible for her increased confidence onstage. Finally harnessing her inner demons and personal strife, Cat Power is free to open up musically and we can now hear the great musical sounds that she hears.
Chainsaw Kittens Tidbits:
The Chainsaw Kittens are featured on the soundtrack for the 2007 horror movie, Bug, from Lions Gate. The band also reunited for a performance at the Norman Music Festival in Norman, Oklahoma on April 26, 2008.
Tyson Meade currently resides in Shanghai, People's Republic of China, where he teaches English.
In recent U.S. live appearances, Meade has fronted a new group called, Halston, which features members of the Starlight Mints. Meade has also been backed by a New York indie group named Arbor Day. Meade's setlists have drawn from every stage of his more than 20-year career in music.

A band that was well-known to Smashing Pumpkins fans, the Oklahoma-based Chainsaw Kittens (they opened for the Pumpkins and many other popular acts) built a small following and loyal fan base throughout the 90’s by mixing eclectic pop, glam punk, new wave and bits of British invasion into their repertoire.
Formed in 1989 and fronted by Tyson Meade (former lead singer of the band Defenstration) and signing on with Mammoth records, the band’s debut release “Violent Religion” did not garner much attention. However, after opening up for many of alternative rock’s most popular bands, the Butch Vig-produced album “Flipped Out In Signapore” in 1992, heightened the group’s profile and fans soon began to take notice. Their energetic mix of glam-damaged energy, theatrical extremity and punk rock was never more evident on their follow up EP in 1993 “Angel On The Range;” which introduced a stable rhythm section for the band, bassist Johnson and drummer Eric Harmon.
The group released “Pop Heiress” in 1994, but the hoped for success didn’t materialize, however the band carried on. A self-titled release in 1996 (also known as Oklahoma Speedway) garnered little attention. The group took an extended break while its members pursued other musical endevours and personal projects before returning in 2000 with the release “The All-America.”
Throughout the group’s history, their lyrical content tackled an array of topics including religion, the Stonewall riots, Fellini, Oklahoma, the Menendez brothers and even Oscar Wilde. The band went through many personnel changes but were always maintained by the presence of singer and songwriter Meade. Since the band split up (they were active from 1989-2000) they have gained more fans and have gained attention on such sources as Allmusic as one of the best groups of their era.

WOE: LP Version Of 'A Spell For The Death Of Man' Now Available
Philadelphia-based black metal band WOE has announced the official release of the long-awaited LP edition of its debut full-length, "A Spell for the Death of Man". A mid-July release is planned as a collaborative effort between Creeping Vine Productions and WOE frontman Chris Grigg's own label, Subvert All Media.
Originally released on CD by American label Stronghold Records in 2008, "A Spell for the Death of Man" received universally positive reviews, and was hailed as one of the "most important black metal releases in years" by a number of publications.
With an initial pressing of 500 copies on red wax, the album features entirely new cover art courtesy of artist Justin Miller, whose artwork for the CD version has been described as "the final song" by Grigg, as well as a printed inner sleeve. The music comes straight off of a brand-new master taken from the original HD recording. Commented Grigg, "This is the album I recorded, the album I wanted to hear. This is WOE as it was intended."

Killswitch at #7 on Album Charts
Killswitch Engage’s fourth album, titled "Killswitch Engage," debuted at #7 on this week’s Billboard Top 200, shifting over 58,000 copies. It is the highest charting album of the band’s career. Killswitch Engage also debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top Hard Music chart. The album, which is the band’s fourth effort for Roadrunner, was produced by noted knobsman Brendan O’Brien (AC/DC, Rage Against the Machine) and co-produced by guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz.======================

Squash Bowels Reveals New Album Details

"Honestly, it's because we are all total audiophiles and we loved the thought of owning our own records on vinyl,” vocalist Taasha Coates told Undercover when asked why they’re going with vinyl.
Vinyl releases aren’t just a case of ringing up the vinyl cutters and sending off the tapes either, things have to be redesigned and remastered.
“It's been a long process and we are all getting our copies in just a couple of days, which is really exciting,” Coates explains. “Maybe we’ll just fondle the artwork and listen to a track or two.”
“All the artwork had to be re-designed to suit the new layout which was quite a lot of work,” Goodall said. “Album covers used to be a real art form but it's hard to get as worked up about a 5 inch CD case. Next record we'll release on vinyl at the same time as the CD version, assuming people dig it of course.”

Rare John Lennon Acetate Test Pressing Offered To Collectors
The John Lennon collectibles market has always been popular and remains this way nearly thirty years after his death. On sale right now is a acetate test pressing of the LP "Wedding Album."

A one-of-a-kind acetate test pressing of John Lennon's Wedding Album is now being offered for sale to Beatles memorabilia collectors. This item is on consignment from a major record collector who is retiring.
Numerous searches on the Internet fail to show another item like this being offered or sold. As a vinyl record appraiser, this is the coup-deville, the mother load, if you will. He are some specifics from the seller:
"Timing is the same as the album. Record does show some marks and a ding in the start of the cue lines but probably won't affect play. Please see photos for examples. None of the marks should skip the record but let’s be honest, "DON'T PLAY IT", it's an acetate. No gray grooves and probably only played once or twice by the original owner."
Let's explore the details of the album:
The Wedding Album is the final LP of three experimental albums by John Lennon and Yoko Ono and was released in 1969. The record consisted of two tracks, one on each side of the record. Side one, simply called, "John & Yoko," is a recording of Lennon and Ono calling to each other, through a range of emotions, over the sound of their heartbeats.
Side two, "Amsterdam," consists of a series of interviews, conversations and captured sounds during the couple's famous "Bed-In" honeymoon. After being married on March 20, 1969 and being experts at marketing, the couple used the event to publicly promote world peace by inviting the press into their hotel room (room #702 at the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel in the Netherlands) for interviews and conversations about world peace. In fact, the next month, John and Yoko sent acorns to the heads of state in various countries around the world in hopes that they would plant them as a symbol of peace. However, the couple was not granted a single visit with any world leader.
The Wedding Album was initially released on Apple Records and reissued in 1997 through Rykodisc with three bonus cuts - all of them B-sides by The Plastic Ono Band composed by Ono.
As a vinyl record appraiser, I have never seen an item like this offered before and my online efforts to find a similar item being offered were fruitless; so the asking price of $25,000 is acceptable and within collectible market limits. For any fan of the Beatles (John was technically still with the group at the time), and specifically John Lennon, this rare acetate would make a compelling addition to any collection.

What I do remember after 45 years is how she sang some Buddy Holly songs, but added the same kind of “wooooo” that the Beatles practically turned into a trademark.

Assuming you watched (not heard) the Beatles in the area where you now live, then the date you and about 8,000 others crammed into Indiana State Fair Coliseum (Indianapolis), is September 3, 1964. That building is now named the Pepsi Coliseum.
Opening for the Beatles that summer — their first American tour — were the Righteous Brothers; Bill Black's Combo; the Exciters; and that “pretty young blond,” singer-songwriter Jackie De Shannon.
An admitted Buddy Holly fan, he inspired Jackie's first Liberty single, appropriately titled “Buddy” (Liberty 55148).
Dozens of tribute recordings exist to Holly, as well as the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens, but what sets Jackie De Shannon's record apart is it came out in August 1958, over five months before the February 3, 1959 plane crash, in which those three stars and their pilot (Roger Peterson) perished.
In early 1964, Liberty issued Jackie's versions of two Buddy Holly classics on a single: “Oh Boy” and “I'm Looking for Someone to Love” (F-55678). It is “Oh Boy” where she does a few marvelous McCartneyish “wooooos,” as he does in “She Loves You.”
With Jackie doing two shows a day in front of huge crowds in sold-out venues, Liberty jumped on the bandwagon by gathering a dozen of her earlier tracks and packaging them in an album titled “Breakin' It Up on the Beatles Tour” (LRP-3390/LST-7390). Among these cuts is “Oh Boy,” but not “I'm Looking for Someone to Love,” though the 20-track CD edition includes both, plus “Maybe Baby,” making for three Holly tunes.
While this is an excellent compilation of De Shannon's 1962-'64 output, it has nothing to do with her live shows with the Beatles.
Less than a year after breakin' something on the Beatles tour, Jackie took the Hal David - Burt Bacharach tune, “What the World Needs Now Is Love” to the Top 10.
In the summer of '69, “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” made the Top 5. Written by Jackie and Jimmy Holiday, this became the biggest hit of her singing career.
Jackie's overall top seller, “Bette Davis Eyes,” which she wrote for Kim Carnes, reached No. 1 in 1981.
Now the name game: Born Sharon Lee Myers, Jackie's first record (1956) identifies her as Sherry Lee . On the next two (1957-'58), one of which is “Buddy,” she is Jackie Dee. The subsequent five labels (1959) credit Jackie Shannon, with the four that follow (1959-'60) showing her as Jackie deShannon. Finally (1960), Jackie De Shannon becomes the standardized name, even though her personal preference is Jackie DeShannon.
Enough details for ya?
IZ ZAT SO? Because Jackie De Shannon and Buddy Holly both began recording in 1956, plus her admiration for him, folks assume the two were friends, or had at least met.
While such a meeting never took place, as Jackie explains, they did come close to performing together in early 1959:
“Though I never met Buddy, I was scheduled to do a show with him. However, that same evening his plane went down in an Iowa cornfield.”

Jackson Dominating Charts
The sales of Michael Jackson's albums in the United States increased 90% last week over the previous week's already record totals. Sales of Michael Jackson’s catalog topped over 800,000 copies in the first full week since the singer’s death. Leading the charge was Jackson’s Number Ones, selling 339,000 copies to rank Number One on the Top Albums chart (Jackson’s discography is ineligible for the Top 200 chart because the releases are older than 18 months). Thriller came in at Number Two with 187,000 copies. Both albums sold more than the week’s Top 200 champ the Now 31 compilation, which sold 169,000 units.
A check of eBay shows that there has been some over-the-top listings, one "Thriller" LP listed at 1 million dollars (I hope that got pulled) And there are some that list the "Thriller" album as "RARE". Rare?
"Thriller" was recognized as the world's best-selling album on February 7, 1984, when it was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records. It is one of only three albums to remain in the top ten of the Billboard 200 for a full year, and spent 37 weeks at number one out of the 80 consecutive weeks it was in the top ten. The album was also the first of three to have seven Billboard Hot 100 top ten singles, and was the only album to be the best-seller of two years (1983–1984) in the US. The album is cited as having sold between 47 and 109 million copies worldwide; the Guinness Book of World Records lists Thriller as having sold 65 million copies as of 2007, a number that has certainly gone up.
So, when reading these idiot posts about a "RARE" "Thriller" LP, be wary, it is just some fool trying to cash in on Jackson's untimely death. I have noticed that the records on ebay are selling for about triple of what the record price guides are listing, so don't overpay for a Jackson LP.

Beastie Boys Album Set For Reissue
The Beastie Boys latest album to be reissued has been announced.
The band are set to reissue III Communication later this month.
The multi-format reissue will hit store shelves on July 14 via Capital Records with pre-orders now available on Beastieboys.com.
The reissue will include b-sides and rarities with the ultra-deluxe 3 LP vinyl version to include a hardcover coffee table book case and will be limited to 1500 copies.

Carrie Underwood has announced she’ll be releasing a new album on November 3.
The American Idol winner hasn’t had a new album out since 2007’s Carnival Ride, and though her third and upcoming album doesn’t have a name yet, she’s currently working on it and plans for the first single to be hitting the airwaves late this summer.
Carrie’s first two albums, Some Hearts and Carnival Ride, have sold over 10 million units and netted her the distinction of being the first country artist hit to 10 #1 hits off her first two albums.

Soungarden have been talking, however not about touring or recording, but about the band’s legacy.
“The only thing that we have talked about is trying to put together an album of B sides and maybe a box set with some unreleased tracks we have,” Cornell releated to Rolling Stone. “This is something we first talked about 10 years ago. We all feel it’s time to do that, and we have a lot of fans out there, and we have a lot of new fans discovering our music, and I think the catalog and the legacy of the band has been ignored by the record label and previous management, so we decided to get together, and start working towards putting something like that out.”
Cornell was steadfast in his denial that a tour would be happening this time next year, adding that such talk has been nonexistent. His main Soundgarden-related focus? Getting those B sides out.
“We did so many B sides, and we were always miffed by the concept that the largest part of our audience was in the U.S., and yet, we were always churning out B sides for other territories, so they would buy the local release instead of the import. That’s what I am the most excited about, to get that collection out so every one knows its there and has access to it. I think a box set would be good, too.”

New Lennon Song?
It's rumored that there may be a third new Beatles track about to be released. "Now and Then" was recorded by John Lennon in 1978 and there have been rumors that of its existence since the Anthology recording sessions in 1995. A source has told BeatleNews.com that Paul McCartney has done some embellishments over the last couple of years to prepare the cut for release.
The source said, "There is no doubt the song is finished, none, or that the finishing touches were done over the last couple years. There is no doubt that all four Beatles are on the track. I heard that George Harrison sings back up as well as playing at least one guitar. It is thought McCartney sings at least some back up, if not more and plays several instruments. It is also possible he wrote additional sections to the song. Why it is not out, I dont know. My sources cannot be revealed but they are very reliable."

Sir Paul & Beatles Catalog
There have been reports about the Beatles' publishing rights and where they are with releation to the death of Michael Jackson. Some have said that Jackson had promised Paul McCartney that the rights would pass back to him upon his death. When no mention was made of it in his will, it supposedly left McCartney devastated.
McCartney has released a statement addressing the rumors, basically calling them all hogwash:

Some time ago, the media came up with the idea that Michael Jackson was going to leave his share in the Beatles songs to me in his will which was completely made up and something I didn’t believe for a second.
Now the report is that I am devastated to find that he didn’t leave the songs to me. This is completely untrue. I had not thought for one minute that the original report was true and therefore, the report that I’m devastated is also totally false, so don’t believe everything you read folks!
In fact, though Michael and I drifted apart over the years, we never really fell out, and I have fond memories of our time together.
At times like this, the press do tend to make things up, so occasionally, I feel the need to put the record straight.

New Lennon Song?
It's rumored that there may be a third new Beatles track about to be released. "Now and Then" was recorded by John Lennon in 1978 and there have been rumors that of its existence since the Anthology recording sessions in 1995. A source has told BeatleNews.com that Paul McCartney has done some embellishments over the last couple of years to prepare the cut for release.
The source said, "There is no doubt the song is finished, none, or that the finishing touches were done over the last couple years. There is no doubt that all four Beatles are on the track. I heard that George Harrison sings back up as well as playing at least one guitar. It is thought McCartney sings at least some back up, if not more and plays several instruments. It is also possible he wrote additional sections to the song. Why it is not out, I dont know. My sources cannot be revealed but they are very reliable."

Sir Paul & Beatles Catalog
There have been reports about the Beatles' publishing rights and where they are with releation to the death of Michael Jackson. Some have said that Jackson had promised Paul McCartney that the rights would pass back to him upon his death. When no mention was made of it in his will, it supposedly left McCartney devastated.
McCartney has released a statement addressing the rumors, basically calling them all hogwash:

Some time ago, the media came up with the idea that Michael Jackson was going to leave his share in the Beatles songs to me in his will which was completely made up and something I didn’t believe for a second.
Now the report is that I am devastated to find that he didn’t leave the songs to me. This is completely untrue. I had not thought for one minute that the original report was true and therefore, the report that I’m devastated is also totally false, so don’t believe everything you read folks!
In fact, though Michael and I drifted apart over the years, we never really fell out, and I have fond memories of our time together.
At times like this, the press do tend to make things up, so occasionally, I feel the need to put the record straight.
