Cult Of Luna Release First Two Albums on Limited Edition Vinyl
Swedish avant-rockers Cult Of Luna's self-titled debut album and its follow-up, The Beyond, are available now on vinyl for the first time ever. Earache Records has released Cult Of Luna's classic first two albums on limited edition vinyl, marking the first time these albums have ever been pressed on vinyl.
The release is part of Earache's "First Time on Vinyl" campaign, plugging the gaps in the Earache catalogue previously unavailable on vinyl.
Cult Of Luna and The Beyond are available on limited edition double-gatefold, coloured vinyl and both albums have been specially remastered for this release by producer Pelle Henricsson (Refused, Hell Is For Heroes). Both albums also feature exclusive new artwork by Cult Of Luna guitarist Erik Olofsson. The self-titled debut also includes three songs which have been enhanced and extended specifically for the vinyl edition.

Slash Announces Solo Album Details
In what will be his first true solo album, rock icon Slash announced today his CD, Slash, will release in April 2010. The album features an all-star roster of guest musicians including Ian Astbury, Chris Cornell, Rocco DeLuca, Fergie, Dave Grohl, Myles Kennedy, Kid Rock, Lemmy Kilmeister, Adam Levine of Maroon 5, Duff McKagan, M. Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold, Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop, and Andrew Stockdale of Wolfmother.
A major undertaking for Slash, he enlisted services of producing partner Eric Valentine (Queens of Stone Age, The All-American Rejects) and compiled a rhythm section of bassist Chris Chaney (Jane's Addiction) and drummer Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails). Slash handled the majority of arranging and songwriting duties and hand-picked each guest artist. The album's guests worked collaboratively with Slash to round out the song.
"The idea was really simple in the beginning," said Slash. "These are all artists I wanted to work with – that I thought it would be amazing to do something creative and collaborative. And I was so impressed with what everyone brought to the table. They were all so committed to doing a good job. And we had a lot of fun making these songs."
The album will be released through EMI Label Services. "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Slash on the "Slash" project. EMI Label Services and Caroline Distribution will be providing unique marketing and promotion services while working closely with Slash on creative ways to expose this great project to the consumer," said Dominic Pandiscia, SVP and General Manager, EMI Label Services and Caroline Distribution.

The Magnetic Fields to Release 69 Love Songs on Deluxe Vinyl
The Magnetic Fields have just announced that they're going to release their SEMINAL 1999/2000 triple album, 69 Love Songs on DELUXE VINYL.
According to the reliable source of music news that is Pitchfork reports that the deluxe vinyl package will be released on April 20, via Merge. The box set will contain remastered version of all 69 songs, spread out over SIX whole 10" records, ALSO including a 10" version of the booklet which came with the original record. As is usually the way with these vinyl releases, there will also be an MP3 download code/token.

Bad Religion Announce 30th Anniversary Mini Tour As They Plan Next Album
2010 marks the 30th anniversary of quintessential Los Angeles punk rock pioneers Bad Religion, and to kick off the yearlong celebration the band will perform music spanning their storied career at multiple-night shows at House of Blues in Los Angeles, Anaheim, San Diego and Las Vegas beginning March 17.
The band also announces that they are currently writing new music with plans to head to the studio this spring and release their 15th studio album later this fall, culminating their anniversary celebration.
Formed in 1980 in the suburbs of Los Angeles by teenage friends; guitarist Brett Gurewitz, bassist Jay Bentley and singer Greg Graffin, with the additions of Greg Hetson (1984-Present), Brian Baker (1994-Present) and Brooks Wackerman (2001-Present), Bad Religion have become synonymous with intelligent and provocative West Coast punk rock and are considered one of the most influential and important bands in the genre. The Simon Cowell-curated all-star rendition of R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” premiered this morning on U.K. radio, Reuters reports. The Haiti benefit single, which will be available for download this Sunday, February 7th, features Mariah Carey, Leona Lewis, Susan Boyle, Rod Stewart, Jon Bon Jovi and Miley Cyrus. Cowell’s version sticks pretty close to the Automatic For the People original, with all the stars involved each singing a line from the R.E.M. classic.

Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious died of a heroin overdose in New York City in 1979. There had been a party to celebrate Vicious’ release on $50,000 bail pending his trial for the murder of his former girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, the previous October. Party guests, said that Vicious had taken heroin at midnight. An autopsy confirmed that Vicious died from an accumulation of fluid in the lungs that was consistent with heroin overdose. A syringe, spoon and heroin residue were discovered near the body.
Alfred Lion, the founder of Blue Note records, died in Los Angeles in 1987 at the age of 78.
Born today in 1969, John Spence, singer, original member of No Doubt in the late 1980's. Committed suicide on December 21, 1987 by shooting himself.
Born on this day 1963, Eva Cassidy, US singer. She is the only artist to score three posthumous UK #1 albums: 2001’s 'Songbird'; 2002’s 'Imagine' and 2003’s 'American Tune'. Eva died of skin cancer on November 1st 1996, (age 33).

In 2004, TV network CBS apologized for its broadcast of the American Super Bowl after Janet Jackson was left exposed when Justin Timberlake ripped her top. The pair had been performing a raunchy half-time duet when one of Jackson’s breasts was exposed as Timberlake pulled at her top. CBS quickly cut away from the scene but was still flooded with calls from angry viewers about the half-time entertainment, produced by MTV. Timberlake insisted it had been an accident saying "I am sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the half-time performance of the Super Bowl."

Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious died of a heroin overdose in New York City in 1979. There had been a party to celebrate Vicious’ release on $50,000 bail pending his trial for the murder of his former girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, the previous October. Party guests, said that Vicious had taken heroin at midnight. An autopsy confirmed that Vicious died from an accumulation of fluid in the lungs that was consistent with heroin overdose. A syringe, spoon and heroin residue were discovered near the body.
Alfred Lion, the founder of Blue Note records, died in Los Angeles in 1987 at the age of 78.
Born today in 1969, John Spence, singer, original member of No Doubt in the late 1980's. Committed suicide on December 21, 1987 by shooting himself.
Born on this day 1963, Eva Cassidy, US singer. She is the only artist to score three posthumous UK #1 albums: 2001’s 'Songbird'; 2002’s 'Imagine' and 2003’s 'American Tune'. Eva died of skin cancer on November 1st 1996, (age 33).
Born today in 1940, Alan Caddy, guitarist with The Tornadoes, who had a 1962 UK & US #1 single with "Telstar." This was the first major hit from a UK act on the American chart. Caddy died on August 16th 2000.
Billy Henderson, one of the founders of US soul group The Spinners, died in 2007 (age 67) after complications from diabetes. Had the 1980 UK #1 & US #2 single "Working My Way Back To You."

Record Store Thriving
Regular readers know that I love interesting stories about record stores that are doing well. I want to thank Kaitlin Ring at the Grand Forks Herald for allowing the rights to reprint the article:

The shop’s “regulars” pore over countless bins of records and don headphones to sample music in recliners.
Located in the lower level of St. John’s Block on the corner of Third Street and DeMers in downtown Grand Forks, the store now occupies the historic building’s long-standing void.
Breathing life into a space vacant for about 15 years, co-owners Jeremy Swisher and Terry Demars hope to recreate the atmosphere of past businesses located in the basement spot — Sprouts Deli and later, Bobino’s Delicatessen, which called it home in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Swisher recalls developing his love for music in his youth at Sprouts Deli, which was one of Grand Forks’s first “trendy” coffee shops and hosted live music events on the weekends.
Since moving from its South Washington location about six weeks ago, Whole Wheat Records and Comics has already held several live music shows on weekends.
“I want to provide something for the youth in Grand Forks,” Swisher said. “I wanted to create a small venue for all ages.”
While he hopes to target UND students, customers of young and old frequent the store on a regular basis.
A new start
Swisher and Demars decided to make the move after six months on Washington because the former location didn’t provide the atmosphere they wanted. “It was hard for customers to find things and for us to display items properly,” Swisher said. He built all the fixtures in the store himself and continues to work on organizing and alphabetizing the records, as the store’s only employee.
Swisher hopes the new location also will give the business better exposure, with all the vehicle and foot traffic that passes by daily. “We’re excited for the spring season and summer events,” Swisher said. He hopes the store attracts walking traffic from events in Town Square, such as the weekly Farmers Markets and the annual downtown Art Fest.
Whole Wheat Records and Comics primarily stocks vintage comics and classic rock records, but the store doesn’t claim to be genre-specific. Patrons can also find classic country, soul, funk, R&B and blues records. The store also plans to carry vinyl from more recent artists, as well, mainly from the indie genre. Swisher also said the store places special orders for customers.
Swisher already has ideas for expansion. He hopes the store will soon have a larger stock of posters and T-shirts, even suggesting he might add a used bookstore section.
Swisher said Whole Wheat Records and Comics has items for customers seeking a nostalgia trip and for serious collectors alike. The self-proclaimed “junk dealer” has several $1 bins of comics and records. Customers can also purchase record players at the store, as well as accessories such as record player needles and other types of audio gear and sound equipment.
Swisher enjoys hearing his customers say they remember certain albums or comic books from their youth. He said customers with some time to spare quickly submerge themselves in the bins of vintage vinyl. “We have some gems you might have to dig for,” he said.
Swisher said he wants to cater to the customers; he set up wireless Internet in the store so one of his regulars can listen to his favorite cultural music.
“I see the store as more of a hangout that’s open for people to relax,” Swisher said. Swisher’s regulars don’t hesitate to talk music with him or request a track from their favorite record be played through the store’s speakers.
Whole Wheat Records and Comics is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Friday and features live music with extended hours on select weekends.

Arctic Monkeys Plan New Single
Sheffield indie titans Arctic Monkeys are to release 'My Propellor' on March 22nd - the third single from their recent hit album.
Arctic Monkeys are one of the most important bands of their generation. Breaking charts records with their debut album the band managed to bring gritty Northern life to British music in a way that was completely natural.
Returning last year with their new album 'Humbug' the band announced a link up with Oxfam. Arctic Monkeys released their comeback single exclusively through the charity, raising countless thousands for Oxfam.
Becoming one of the biggest selling vinyl releases of 2009, the single 'Crying Lightning' preceded the artistic success that was 'Humbug'. Now Arctic Monkeys are to return to their new album for another single release.
'My Propellor' is due to be released on March 22nd and will contain three exclusive new tracks. 'Joining The Dots', 'The Afternoon's Hat' and 'Don't Forget Whose Legs You're On' will appear across the seven and ten inch vinyl releases.

14 year old Jack Skuller is equally passionate about the melodies of the Beatles and the energy of the Ramones. His own irresistibly catchy song "Love Is A Drum" will be released on Bar/None Records in April 2010.

Aerosmith Saga Continues
Steven Tyler’s new manager has sent a letter to Aerosmith’s management threatening legal action if the band makes good on their promise to tour with a new singer, Billboard reports. In the letter, manager Skip Miller asserts that Tyler is synonymous with Aerosmith: “Can you imagine the manager of the Rolling Stones calling for the replacement of Mick Jagger?” Miller writes. “Steven is Aerosmith, along with the others. He’s the guy the public knows. He’s the singer.”
Prior to entering rehab for an addiction to prescription pain medicine, Tyler vowed to stay in Aerosmith, saying in a statement, “I wish to set the record straight and say that I have read reports of a rumored two-year hiatus and want to be clear that this is completely false and I will enthusiastically be writing, recording and performing with Aerosmith as soon as things are handled.”

Lady GaGa, U2's Bono 'To Sing On Lionel Richie's 'We Are The World' Remake'
Lady GaGa and U2 singer will both appear on Lionel Richie's charity single for the victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti, it's been reported. The two acts will join the likes of Usher and Jennifer Hudson on the remake of Richie and Quincy Jones' hit, 'We Are The World'.
As many as 100 singers could eventually feature on the song, which is being produced by RedOne, according to E! Online.
'We Are The World' was originally released in 1985 to help raise money for famine relief in Africa.
Last month, it was claimed the song's co-author Michael Jackson could also make a posthumous appearance on the new version. It is the latest song to be released in aid of the victims of the earthquake in January.
Jay-Z, Rihanna and Bono have already released 'Stranded', while Simon Cowell's all-star remake of 'Everybody Hurts' by R.E.M. is out on February 7.

Grammy Wrap Up
Well, OK, I will admit it, I watched some of the Grammy Awards Show last night. I will also admit that I could not stomach most of it, with the over the top theatrics and stage presentations. What happened to a guy coming out and playing a guitar and singing? Why do we need 20-30 dancers in the background? Why all the drama? Well, it sells the music, I guess. (this coming from a guy who loved Alice Cooper and David Bowie concerts). I'll stick to what I know and like, and leave the new music to the youngsters who crave it. Some of it is just not for me. Here are last night's winners:

Sheffield indie titans Arctic Monkeys are to release 'My Propellor' on March 22nd - the third single from their recent hit album.
Arctic Monkeys are one of the most important bands of their generation. Breaking charts records with their debut album the band managed to bring gritty Northern life to British music in a way that was completely natural.
Returning last year with their new album 'Humbug' the band announced a link up with Oxfam. Arctic Monkeys released their comeback single exclusively through the charity, raising countless thousands for Oxfam.
Becoming one of the biggest selling vinyl releases of 2009, the single 'Crying Lightning' preceded the artistic success that was 'Humbug'. Now Arctic Monkeys are to return to their new album for another single release.

Aerosmith Saga Continues
Steven Tyler’s new manager has sent a letter to Aerosmith’s management threatening legal action if the band makes good on their promise to tour with a new singer, Billboard reports. In the letter, manager Skip Miller asserts that Tyler is synonymous with Aerosmith: “Can you imagine the manager of the Rolling Stones calling for the replacement of Mick Jagger?” Miller writes. “Steven is Aerosmith, along with the others. He’s the guy the public knows. He’s the singer.”
Prior to entering rehab for an addiction to prescription pain medicine, Tyler vowed to stay in Aerosmith, saying in a statement, “I wish to set the record straight and say that I have read reports of a rumored two-year hiatus and want to be clear that this is completely false and I will enthusiastically be writing, recording and performing with Aerosmith as soon as things are handled.”

Lady GaGa, U2's Bono 'To Sing On Lionel Richie's 'We Are The World' Remake'
Lady GaGa and U2 singer will both appear on Lionel Richie's charity single for the victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti, it's been reported. The two acts will join the likes of Usher and Jennifer Hudson on the remake of Richie and Quincy Jones' hit, 'We Are The World'.
As many as 100 singers could eventually feature on the song, which is being produced by RedOne, according to E! Online.
'We Are The World' was originally released in 1985 to help raise money for famine relief in Africa.
Last month, it was claimed the song's co-author Michael Jackson could also make a posthumous appearance on the new version. It is the latest song to be released in aid of the victims of the earthquake in January.
Jay-Z, Rihanna and Bono have already released 'Stranded', while Simon Cowell's all-star remake of 'Everybody Hurts' by R.E.M. is out on February 7.

Grammy Wrap Up
Well, OK, I will admit it, I watched some of the Grammy Awards Show last night. I will also admit that I could not stomach most of it, with the over the top theatrics and stage presentations. What happened to a guy coming out and playing a guitar and singing? Why do we need 20-30 dancers in the background? Why all the drama? Well, it sells the music, I guess. (this coming from a guy who loved Alice Cooper and David Bowie concerts). I'll stick to what I know and like, and leave the new music to the youngsters who crave it. Some of it is just not for me. Here are last night's winners:
Beyoncé picked up six out of the 10 Grammys she was nominated for, while Taylor Swift nabbed four and Lady Gaga scored two.

Barbara Cowsill, mother of the family group the Cowsills, died in Tempe, Arizona in 1985 (age 56). The Cowsills consisted of Barbara and six of her children - five boys and a girl. Their bubblegum hits in the late 1960's included the title song from "Hair." It was the Cowsills who provided the inspiration for TV's "The Partridge Family."
Rhythm-and-blues singer Donnie Elbert died in Philadelphia in 1989 two weeks after suffering a stroke. He was 52.
Dewey Martin died in his Van Nuys, CA, home in 2009. The drummer was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Buffalo Springfield in ‘97. He was 68.

In 1957, Decca Records announced that Bill Haley & His Comets, "Rock Around The Clock" had sold over a million copies in the UK, mostly on 10 inch 78's.
Bob Dylan was reported to be in the audience as Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper play Duluth, Minnesota less than three days before their fatal plane crash in 1959.
Bobby Darin becomes the youngest person to headline a TV special when "Bobby Darin & Friends" (including Joanie Sommers) aired on NBC in 1961.
Seventeen year-old Neil Young performed his first professional date at a Winnipeg country club in 1963.
The Beach Boys recorded "Surfin' U.S.A." and "Shutdown" in 1963.
In 1967, the Beatles spent a second day at Knole Park, Sevenoaks, Kent, England to complete filming for the ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ promotional video. The film was shot in color, for the benefit of the US market, since UK television was still broadcasting only in black and white. Taking time out from filming John Lennon bought a 1843 poster from an antiques shop in Surrey which provided him with most the lyrics for The Beatles song "Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite."
John Fred and his Playboy Band's "Judy in Disguise" and the American Breed's "Bend Me, Shape Me" were certified gold in 1968. Neither group came even close to selling that many records with any other release.
Crow recorded "Evil Woman Don't Play Your Games With Me" in 1969.
Led Zeppelin opened for the Iron Butterfly in 1969 and so thrilled the audience the headliners refused to go on.
The Jackson Five went to #1 on the US singles chart in 1970 with "I Want You Back." The song was originally written for Gladys Knight & The Pips.
The Grateful Dead's bust for LSD and barbiturates in a New Orleans hotel in 1970 becomes the inspiration for their song, "Truckin'."
In 1972, more than 40,000 mourners file past Mahalia Jackson's open coffin in Chicago's Great Salem Baptist Church. Funeral services are held the next day. Those in attendace are Coretta Scott King, Mayor Richard Daley and Sammy Davis, Jr. who reads a telegram from President Nixon. Aretha Franklin closed things by singing "Precious Lord, Take My Hand."

Lou Reed Reissues Metal Machine Music, Tours With Metal Machine Trio
Lou Reed and his Metal Machine Trio bring music inspired by Reed's infamously abrasive 1975 album Metal Machine Music to the live stage in Europe for a string of dates this April. Accompanied by sax player Ulrich Krieger and noize maker Sarth Calhoun, Reed is set to play many discordant soundscapes, though a press release makes it clear he "won't duplicate the original" Metal Machine Music.
The tour coincides with a reissue of the LP on 180 gram vinyl, audio DVD, and-- for those who want their sonic corrosion crystal clear-- Blu-ray. The reissue is available to order on Lou's site now www.loureed.com/metalmachinemusic/

Foreigner to Release New Studio Album in March

A time of comeback time for old time rockers still on the cards as this year 80's rock lovers will have the chance to hear another new stuffs from legendary group Foreigner as they prepared to release a new studio album titled "Can't Slow Down". According to Blabbermouth, the legendary rockers will be dropping their first studio record after 15 years on March 1 via earMusic.
The new record will consist in total of 13 studio songs that will probably something of a well prepared singles as the tracks are being produced by two renowned music producers, Marti Fredriksen and Mark Ronson. Beside being released as a CD format, the new record will also be included in a special package consisting of 2 CDs + DVD (CD 1 is the new album : Can't Slow Down, CD 2 The band's Live track and the DVD will consist of footage and interviews)
Commenting about the new album also about the band's line up for the record which consist the likes of, Mick Jones, Kelly Hansen, Tom Gimbel, Michael Bluestein, Jeff Pilson and Brian Tichy, the band's frontman and founder Mick said, "Our music has touched a lot of people worldwide. Sigur Ros Frontman Announces Official Album Release Date
In an e-mail to fans last night, Sigur Rós lead singer Jónsi Birgisson finally announced a release date for his debut solo album, 'Go.' In addition to announcing the drop date of April 5th, Jónsi also published the cover art of the album, which will include a total of 9 songs "drawn from the large pool" of material he collected while working with Sigur Rós. Collaborating alongside Jónsi will be classical composer Nico Muhly, who helped arrange and fine tune the tracks.

Nelson Cancels Show Due To Hand Problem (And Crew Arrests)
Willie Nelson had to cancel a Kenansville, North Carolina concert last Thursday because of a sore hand; however, the decision to not go on also came after six members of his band and crew were arrested for alleged possession of marijuana and moonshine.
The charges against the six, including Nelson's bass player Dan Edward Spears, are misdemeanors and they were issued citations. Officers had smelled marijuana when they passed by Nelson's tour bus and investigated.

Jan. 29--Television-audio dealer Mark Mawhinney is finding a resurging market for probably the lowest-priced item in his business,
It is his 40-year-old Spin-Clean, a vinyl record-cleaning device that sells for $60.
''Right now, we are behind about 700 units," says the owner of Northern Audio & Home Theater in Ross. "We can't keep up."
Spin-Clean is a narrow, plastic chamber that holds 33-, 45- and 78-rpm records, which are rotated through a bath that takes dirt out and drops it into the container.

In an era of digitizing and miniaturizing, vinyl is staking its claim in the music market. It seems counterintuitive to believe that bulky vinyl records might still be popular and profitable, yet in 2008, 1.88 million vinyl records were purchased, according to Neilsen SoundScan. Although that’s more than any year since SoundScan began tracking vinyl sales in 1991, the phenomenon seemed to remain an underground practice as digital sales boomed. However, the proliferation of record sales, even in Syracuse, suggests otherwise.
Scott Makarchuk, owner of Books and Memories, 2600 James St., hesitated to continue selling records when he bought the store almost a year ago. But within 11 months, he has collected more than 10,000 records in the basement of the used bookstore, all of which were brought to him by willing sellers. After Makarchuk inspects each, he chooses the best and purchases them for an average price of 85 cents before selling those best records for $3.95.
“I hadn’t used a record player since I was a kid so I didn’t see a point in continuing to sell them,” says Makarchuk, 43. “But after I saw record players being sold more and more and researched the industry, I realized there was potential.”

Lou Reed and his Metal Machine Trio bring music inspired by Reed's infamously abrasive 1975 album Metal Machine Music to the live stage in Europe for a string of dates this April. Accompanied by sax player Ulrich Krieger and noize maker Sarth Calhoun, Reed is set to play many discordant soundscapes, though a press release makes it clear he "won't duplicate the original" Metal Machine Music.

Foreigner to Release New Studio Album in March

A time of comeback time for old time rockers still on the cards as this year 80's rock lovers will have the chance to hear another new stuffs from legendary group Foreigner as they prepared to release a new studio album titled "Can't Slow Down". According to Blabbermouth, the legendary rockers will be dropping their first studio record after 15 years on March 1 via earMusic.
The new record will consist in total of 13 studio songs that will probably something of a well prepared singles as the tracks are being produced by two renowned music producers, Marti Fredriksen and Mark Ronson. Beside being released as a CD format, the new record will also be included in a special package consisting of 2 CDs + DVD (CD 1 is the new album : Can't Slow Down, CD 2 The band's Live track and the DVD will consist of footage and interviews)
Commenting about the new album also about the band's line up for the record which consist the likes of, Mick Jones, Kelly Hansen, Tom Gimbel, Michael Bluestein, Jeff Pilson and Brian Tichy, the band's frontman and founder Mick said, "Our music has touched a lot of people worldwide. Sigur Ros Frontman Announces Official Album Release Date
In an e-mail to fans last night, Sigur Rós lead singer Jónsi Birgisson finally announced a release date for his debut solo album, 'Go.' In addition to announcing the drop date of April 5th, Jónsi also published the cover art of the album, which will include a total of 9 songs "drawn from the large pool" of material he collected while working with Sigur Rós. Collaborating alongside Jónsi will be classical composer Nico Muhly, who helped arrange and fine tune the tracks.

My Morning Jacket Plan Spring Tour
Kentucky's own My Morning Jacket are getting ready to return to what they do best-- playing marathon shows that make you believe in the rejuvenating powers of rock and/or roll. After a year away from the stage, the group will hit nine U.S. cities starting April 20 in Birmingham, Alabama. They'll be joined by New Orleans' famed Preservation Hall Jazz Band on all dates. (MMJ frontman Jim James recorded two songs with the Jazz Band for an upcoming benefit album out February 16.)

Nelson Cancels Show Due To Hand Problem (And Crew Arrests)
Willie Nelson had to cancel a Kenansville, North Carolina concert last Thursday because of a sore hand; however, the decision to not go on also came after six members of his band and crew were arrested for alleged possession of marijuana and moonshine.
The charges against the six, including Nelson's bass player Dan Edward Spears, are misdemeanors and they were issued citations. Officers had smelled marijuana when they passed by Nelson's tour bus and investigated.

Vinyl record cleaner makes a comeback

Jan. 29--Television-audio dealer Mark Mawhinney is finding a resurging market for probably the lowest-priced item in his business,
It is his 40-year-old Spin-Clean, a vinyl record-cleaning device that sells for $60.
''Right now, we are behind about 700 units," says the owner of Northern Audio & Home Theater in Ross. "We can't keep up."
Spin-Clean is a narrow, plastic chamber that holds 33-, 45- and 78-rpm records, which are rotated through a bath that takes dirt out and drops it into the container.

Vinyl makes up half of Great Escape’s music sales

Forget about compact disc players. Who cares about MP3 players? Brennan Graves would rather spin an album on his record player.
“CDs are cold, and (iPods) have no soul at all,” said Graves, of Bowling Green. He enjoys “the organic process of putting the needle on the record.”
In the age of digital music and Internet downloads, vinyl records are making a comeback.
At Great Escape on Scottsville Road, vinyl sales have increased over the past two years, making up half of the store’s music sales, manager Matt Pfefferkorn said.
“The regulars we have like the sound of it,” he said. “They prefer the sound as opposed to a CD or iPod. Maybe they’re more into that pure sound.”
Customers of all ages flock to the store’s vinyl collection, but Pfefferkorn recently has noticed a spike in the number of younger people who purchase vinyl records.
“Normally, high school kids are into the latest technology, but they’re discovering their parents’ album collection,” he said. And “college kids are pretty heavily into the vinyl scene.”
In fact, new vinyl production has increased over the years, he said.
These days, customers buy albums from recent artists, such as Kanye West and Ben Harper, on vinyl. Artists, such as Willie Nelson and the Black Crowes, have released their newest albums on vinyl, and companies are remaking records by classic rocks bands, such as Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Beatles.
Many new records include a CD version of the album or a code to download the album onto an MP3 player, which also helps sales, Pfefferkorn said.
“There’s still people that will constantly come in and look through the records and not even look at the CDs,” he said. “CDs lost popularity due to iPods, but the record player is always there. It’s still there.”
Matthew Howard, an employee at CD Warehouse on Campbell Lane, said he has noticed an increase in the number of young customers who buy vinyl.
“I think it’s just the fascination with the older music,” he said. “A lot of people tell me recently that it just sounds better.”
Many customers prefer the artwork that accompanies a vinyl record, Howard said. In comparison to a CD cover, a record cover is big enough to hang on the wall.
Also, many customers collect vinyl for the bargaining experience - records, especially used ones, tend to be less expensive than CDs.
“You can come in here and, if you only have $10, essentially you can walk out with 10 records,” Pfefferkorn said.
Several people sell their used records to Pfefferkorn’s shop. Customers swap their records for cash on a daily basis. By 2 p.m. on a Friday, three people had sold records to the store.
Philip Fracassi, of Bowling Green, has collected records for two years.
“Originally, my parents had their own vinyl collection they passed onto me,” he said. “It has a better sound quality.”
Still, many customers have been collecting records since they were children. Pfefferkorn started buying records when he was 8 years old. Back then, he listened to his albums on his father’s record player.
Now he has 5,000 to 6,000 records.
“I have some good treasures,” he said. “You can kind of go back to your childhood ... to me, it’s the truest, purest form of listening to music.”
And most records sound good on any type of player. Pfefferkorn recently bought a Fisher Price record player for his daughter.
“I was listening to a Bob Dylan album on it, and it sounds so cool,” he said.
Graves has been collecting vinyl records for about 30 years. He now has about 500 records - some of his favorites include his Bruce Springsteen, Kiss and The Beatles collections.
“The artwork’s better. The sound’s better,” he said. “It’s more personal.”

Drop John Lee Hooker off in the parched environs of Paris, Texas and tell him to do his mournful thing and that it’ll be okay because Miles Davis will be right behind him with his mute trumpet following his every musical move the way Ali Akbar Khan followed Ravi Shankar's.
That's the vibe of this soundtrack to the 1990 film "The Hot Spot" starring Dennis Hopper.
Add Taj Mahal on a few tracks, some slide guitar from Roy Rogers here, rhythm from bassist Tim Drummond and the late, great Earl Palmer, who drummed for everyone from Little Richard to Ricky Nelson to the Beach Boys there, and you have the late Jack Nitszche’s deliciously langourous musical game plan for the soundtrack.
There was no American vinyl issue of this back in 1990. In fact, there wasn’t much vinyl of anything back then and whether or not the original UK vinyl was sourced from analog is in doubt, yet original copies of it go for upwards of $100.00.
I’ve got a copy and take my word for it, that this double 45rpm reissue destroys the original. If you dig the Paris, Texas soundtrack album for its moody, desolate vibe and superb sonics, you’ll love this reissue. It’s outta the ballpark great!

The folk, blues and funk artist was widely regarded as one of the most soulful and innovative singer-songwriters of his generation and had been cited as an influence by artists as varied as U2, Portishead and Eric Clapton.

Warner Bros. Records signed the folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary in 1962. They will go on to have big hits with harmonized versions of such Bob Dylan songs as "Blowin' in the Wind" as well as "If I Had a Hammer," "Puff the Magic Dragon" and "Leaving on a Jet Plane."
In 1964, the Beatles spent the day at Pathe Marconi Studios in Paris, France, The Beatles' only studio recording session for EMI held outside the UK. They recorded new vocals for ‘She Loves You’, ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’ and ‘Can't Buy Me Love’, after EMI's West German branch persuaded Brian Epstein that they would be unable to sell large quantities of records in Germany unless they were recorded in the German language. A translator coached John, Paul, and George, although their familiarity with the German language from their Hamburg days made things much easier.
During a concert in London in 1965, pop-rock singer P.J. Proby splits his pants on stage, significantly increasing his "naughty" reputation. Next month, he'll be banned by Britian's ABC theater chain for his new habit of purposely splitting his trousers on stage for dramatic effect.
The Bobby Fuller Four's "I Fought The Law" was released in 1966.
In 1967 - Jimi Hendrix and The Who gave a tribute concert to the Beatles late manager, Brian Epstein.
In 1968, the Doors appeared at The Pussy Cat A Go Go, Las Vegas. After the show singer Jim Morrison taunts a security guard in the parking lot by pretending to smoke a joint, resulting in a fight. The police arrive who arrest Morrison and charge him with vagrancy, public drunkenness, and failure to possess sufficient identification.
Steve Winwood left Traffic to join Blind Faith in 1969
New York music business financier Allen Klein is found guilty of ten counts of evading US income taxes in 1971. Klein once controlled the finances of both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. The Beatles, apparently over Paul McCartney's objections, hired Klein in 1969 to try to rescue their ailing Apple Corps Limited, which was losing thousands of pounds a week. The tangled business affairs of Apple, and Klein's failure to solve them, are cited as one reason for the Beatles' breakup
The triple album 'The Concert For Bangla Desh' went to #1 on the UK album chart in 1972. Organized by George Harrison to raise funds for the people caught up in the war and famine from the area. The set featured; Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston, Eric Clapton, Ravi Shankar and members from Badfinger.
Grand Funk recorded "The Loco-Motion" in 1974.
In 1977, Gwen Dickey former backing band for The Temptations, went to #1 on the US singles chart as Rose Royce with "Car Wash."
In 1979, 16-year-old Brenda Spencer killed two people and wounded nine others when she fired from her house across the street onto the entrance of San Diego's Grover Cleveland Elementary School. Spencer fired the shot's from a .22-caliber rifle her father had given her for Christmas. When asked why she did it, she answered “I don't like Mondays.” The Boomtown Rats went on to write and recorded a song based on the event.

In 1983, Australian group Men At Work went to #1 on the British and American singles and album charts simultaneously with "Down Under" and "Business As Usual." The last artist to achieve this was Rod Stewart in 1971.
Country superstar Garth Brooks refused to accept his American Music Award for Favorite Overall Artist in 1996. Brooks said that Hootie and the Blowfish had done more for music that year than he did. Yep, they did.
A deluxe, double-disc version of Beck's Grammy-winning '96 album, "Odelay," was released in 2008. The first disc features unreleased songs while the second contains 16 rare tracks.
In 2009, former American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson made the largest ever leap to number one in US chart history, rising 96 places. Her single, My Life Would Suck Without You, rose from 97 to the top of the Billboard chart after selling 280,000 downloads in its first week of release. A clip from the video for the single was premiered in the commercial break of that week's episode of American Idol.

In 2009, former American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson made the largest ever leap to number one in US chart history, rising 96 places. Her single, My Life Would Suck Without You, rose from 97 to the top of the Billboard chart after selling 280,000 downloads in its first week of release. A clip from the video for the single was premiered in the commercial break of that week's episode of American Idol.

Record Convention
EUGENE, Ore. -- Bill Finneran has found his groove.
Over the past 20 years, the Eugene man has turned his huge record collection into the largest record convention in the Northwest.
This year's convention takes place Sunday at the Eugene Hilton. Audiophiles, professional buyers and ordinary people looking for that rare vinyl gem are expected to turn out. Finneran says vendors from all over the country will have some 50,000 to 100,000 records for sale.
Finneran insists "a record convention is for everybody, not just for record collectors."
