The top seller for the year for the first time does not come from The Beatles.  In the last year a studio acetate of The Sex Pistols "God Save The Queen" sold for almost $24k, the highest selling price of any recorded auctioned on eBay between Record Store Day 2011 and Record Store Day 2012.

Northern Soul reappeared on the list twice this past year, after being absent all of last year.  The Beatles topped the list three times this last year, down from four times from last year.

This from the folks over at jack white's www.thirdmanrecords.com  As a collector, I have mixed feelings, although this is a fantastic stunt, the making of these discs does serve some valuable purposes.  It draws attention to vinyl (which is always a good thing) and makes a instant collectible, but it won't be in my collection because of the cost.....

Jack White Balloon Record Breaks Record to Become Highest Priced Flexi Disc of All Time

On April 17th, an eBay auction for a copy of Third Man’s balloon-launched “Freedom at 21” flexi-disc realized a price of $4238.88. As far as can be discerned, this is the highest price ever paid for a flexi-disc record, topping out usual benchmarks from obscure Japanese hardcore singles of the early 80’s and Beatles fan-club Christmas offerings. Of the 1000 balloons launched, only a handful have been discovered so far. This release will surely continue to rival such rarities as hand-painted Dead Weather singles, 3rpm LPs and Triple-Decker records as yet another in a long-line of collectible, investible, hard-to-find vinyl from the folks at Third Man Records.

Rush Announce Tour Dates

In anticipation of the Canadian icon's upcoming album, 'Clockwork Angels,' which is due out on June 12, Rush have now announced tour dates to promote the LP.

The tour kicks off September 7 in Manchester, New Hampshire and will travel to 30-plus cities before closing out December 2 in Houston, Texas.

Levon Helm (1940 - 2012)

Levon Helm, who played drums for The Band and eventually had a critically acclaimed solo career, has lost his battle with cancer. He was 71.

Prior to the Band, Helm played with Ronnie Hawkins and The Hawks.  Among his bandmates were Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson. In 1963, they parted ways with Hawkins and went on the road as Levon and the Hawks, The Canadian Squires and, finally, the Hawks.

A RECORD STORE NEAR YOU, April 18, 2012 – From Abba to Wilco, exclusive vinyl recordings of all genres, shapes, sizes, colors, and speeds will be released on April 21 to commemorate Record Store Day for 2012.

To celebrate and promote independently owned record stores throughout North America and Europe, Record Store Day was founded in 2007 and takes place the third Saturday of every April. 

Many record labels are honoring the day with the release of more than 300 vinyl recordings, most of them unavailable any other way. 

More than 1,700 independently owned record stores and shops in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and 25 other countries are participating in the event, from the world’s oldest record shop, Spillers Records in Cardiff, England, which first opened in 1894, to Chicago’s Hydrogen Plus Records which opened last fall.

Special vinyl releases will be sold solely at participating stores, and store owners will choose which titles they plan to stock, including:

 •James Brown – unreleased performances from his 1962 Apollo Theatre concert

•The Civil Wars – a 7-inch 45 of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean”

•Miles Davis - Forever Miles, an album of previously unreleased performances

•Flaming Lips – a double-album collaboration with various musicians

•The Kinks – re-issues of three late 1960s albums on colored vinyl

•Branford Marsalis – the latest release of his jazz quartet

•Metallica – previously unreleased recordings on 12-inch silver vinyl

•Katy Perry – her song “Part of Me” on pink vinyl

•Iggy Pop – a 7-inch release on lime green vinyl

•The Supremes – a 7-inch release of their early hit “Baby Love” on heart-shaped vinyl

•Tegan & Sara – their Get Along album on white vinyl

•Peter Tosh – re-mixes of his Legalize It music on a picture disc

•Widespread Panic – Live Wood, an album of recordings from its recent tour

Music lovers of all ages continue to discover or return to their love of analog music on vinyl, describing it as “richer,” “warmer,” “more natural,” “more durable,”  and simply “cooler.”  In addition, about half of all recorded music has only been released on vinyl. 

Critics of digitized music complain mid-range sounds are compressed and distorted, while higher frequencies are missing.  At a media conference in January, rock musician Neil Young said digital music only provides 5 percent of the data of music created in a studio, and that even digital guru Steve Jobs preferred listening to analog recordings on vinyl. 

Vinyl-philes revel in the ceremony of taking a record out of its sleeve, gazing at the album cover art, and playing the record through one side, then flipping it over, claiming that is the way the music was meant to be heard.  Vinyl listening can be a social event, with music lovers gathered in clubs and dorm rooms to play their favorite albums.    

Nielsen Soundscan continues to rank vinyl as the fastest-growing musical format, with 3.9 million new long-playing vinyl albums sold in the United States, up 39.3 percent from 2010.   And the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) noted sales of new vinyl singles, typically played at 45 revolutions per minute and containing one song on each side, nearly doubled last year in retail dollars, from about $2.3 million in 2010 to more than $4.5 million.  

“Vinyl as a format has shown remarkable staying power,” said Joshua P. Friedlander, RIAA Vice President, Strategic Data Analysis.  “Although it remains only a small part of the music market today, vinyl album sales have been growing for the past few years.  In 2011, more than five million vinyl albums were shipped, the highest level since 1990.”

While most long-playing vinyl spins at 33 1/3 rpm, rock mavericks such as Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, and Tom Waits have all recently released records to be played at 78 rpm, since many new turntables have resurrected the vintage playing speed, a music format virtually extinct by 1960.

Extinction, the word used to describe the fate of vinyl records when CDs began usurping their shelf space in music stores in the 1980s and 1990s, is now being used in relation to CDs, as retailers strive to provide customers what they want – more vinyl.

DEAR JERRY: In a recent episode of the History Channel's American Pickers, the buyers found someone with the album by the Beatles with the butcher shop scene on the cover.

The owner of the LP told the pickers that if it were in mint condition he would value it at $39,000.

But, because his copy showed noticeable wear, he ended up letting it go for $1,000.

Was he just blowing smoke, or is $39,000 a realistic price?

DEAR KEN: Missing from your question is every piece of information, other than the title, necessary to appraise that specific copy of "The Beatles … Yesterday and Today" (Capitol 2553).

Unless you recorded and saved that episode, you may have no way of knowing more about it, so I'd better cover all of the likely possibilities.

Every one of the Capitol's 1966 issues fits into one of three groups, commonly known as states:

FIRST STATE: Front cover pictures the Beatles wearing white smocks, commonly seen on butchers and doctors. Scattered on and around them are several chunks of raw meat and bones, plus a few pieces of broken toy dolls. Monaural first state copies (T-2553) are in the $5,000 to $7,500 range. Stereos (ST-2553) are at least twice as rare as monos, and twice as valuable: $10,000 to $15,000.

Regardless of which format the pickers found, unless it is both pristine and factory-sealed, $39,000 is far, far above current market prices.

SECOND STATE: Has two front covers. The one on top pictures John, George, and Ringo standing behind a trunk. Paul is sitting inside the open trunk. Underneath the trunk cover, and somewhat visible to the naked eye, is the original butcher cover. This concoction is often referred to as having the paste-over cover.

Monaural second state copies are in the $1,000 to $2,000 range. Stereos are $2,000 to $3,000.

THIRD STATE: Has only the trunk cover.

Both monaural and stereo third state copies are in the $200 to $400 range.

Chief among the variables that can drive prices well above or below these near-mint value ranges is condition.

Any of the three variations can sell for several times more if mint and still in the factory shrink-wrap, or for a fraction of the price if excessive wear and tear is evident.

According to sales results in our database, the highest prices paid for factory-sealed first state butcher covers is $85,000 for stereo and $47,500 for mono.

Unique to this album is the need for a separate price range for "peeled" copies. These are second state issues, but with the trunk cover peeled off to expose the butcher one underneath.

The damage sustained by the substrate butcher cover, by the peeling process, can be from none to extensive. Since the value will be directly proportional to the result, it is wise to have the peeling done by a professional.

Hopefully, before paying $1,000 for "The Beatles … Yesterday and Today," the American Pickers had access to enough of the above facts and figures to make an informed decision. I'm guessing they did.

DEAR JERRY: You are my last hope to put an end to the harassing I get on the car show circuit, during the golden oldies segment.

The dee jay usually takes requests, and for years I have asked them to play a car-related song I once heard. At least, I thought I did.

From the early '60s (1961-'63), the title is "Four on the Floor and a Fifth Under the Seat."

It may have been recorded by a California Highway Patrolman, but my memory is fuzzy on that.

I need to know if it really exists on record, or face another year on the circuit being chided by the guys.

DEAR NEIL: One of the most common reasons for being unable to locate a song is not knowing the correct title. In this case, you are so close to being accurate I'm surprised it didn't turn up in your search.

I know four ON the floor makes more sense, but this one is "Four in the Floor (And a "Fifth" Under the Seat)." (United Artists 844).

This "if you drink, don't drive" narrative, credited to Trooper Jim Foster, came out in 1965, a wee bit later than you thought.

Now that you have the correct title and artist, you can easily bring it up on YouTube.


IZ ZAT SO? We only know of two other records by Jim Foster, one on each side of "Four in the Floor," and they too are car related.

As Jim Foster and the Kountry Kut-Ups, he did "Rag Roof Roadster" (River 603) in 1964, in which he sings "I'm telling ya boys, I got four in the floor."

Then in 1967, still as Trooper Jim Foster, he released "Four Chrome Wheels" (Turret 109).

Vinyl spins back into fashion

Baby boomers will remember record stores as a sexy fusion of hot music product and even hotter people watching.

Their children, Generation Xers and Ys, regarded record stores with Empire Records-esque nostalgia, even as they shopped for CDs at music megastores.

But despite the digital nativeness implied by the iGen tagging of today's teens, some music retailers reckon record stores are still beloved by the young.

Add to that enduring support of the not-so-young and older music lovers and the record store story is more revival than survival.

Brisbane is no exception. Several new independent record stores have opened in recent years, even as the category-killing might of major chains grows.

Tom Petty’s Stolen Guitars Found

Five guitars belonging to Tom Petty were recovered yesterday. The vintage guitars had been reported missing Friday, when they were taken from the Culver City, Calif. soundstage where the band was rehearsing for its upcoming tour.  The Los Angeles Times reported that Daryl Emmette Washington, 51, of Los Angeles has now been arrested in connection with the robbery. Washington had worked as a private security guard at the Culver Studios complex. Police Chief Don Pedersen said the break in the case came when the suspect pawned one of the guitars at a Hollywood pawnshop for $250.

“Mr. Petty would have joined us, but he’s preparing for a concert in Denver,” said Pedersen, who described the stolen guitars as collectively worth $100,000.

Petty took to his Facebook page Tuesday evening to say "I am extremely grateful to the Culver City Police Department for a job well done and touched by the outpouring of good wishes and concern from our fans and friends."

KISS: New Comic Covers Revealed

This June, IDW Publishing is bringing back the rock group KISS in comic form. Last year, Archie Comics released a story in which Archie Meets Kiss. This time IDW is giving them marquee status.
According to IDW, the series is rooted in KISS fandom, featuring KISS characters like "Wicked" Lester, the Destroyer, She, the Elder, and more, but it will be very accessible to all comic readers.

Joey Ramone Solo Album To Be Released

BMG recently announced the release of a posthumous solo album from former Ramones frontman Joey Ramone, who died 11 years ago at age 49.

The 15-track album called '…Ya Know?' will begin with a Record Store Day limited-edition 7" vinyl for lead track "Rock 'N Roll Is the Answer."

'…Ya Know?' will be released in 20 countries worldwide, including the US on May 22, in Continental Europe on May 25 and in the UK on May 28. RED will distribute the album in North America and Rough Trade throughout Europe.

Sex Pistols To Reissue "God Save The Queen"

Punk legends the Sex Pistols have announced plans to reissue their controversial 1977 hit "God Save The Queen"on May 28th.

This marks the 35th Anniversary since the track first came out.  Originally released on May 27, 1977, during the Queen's Silver Jubilee, the cut made its mark in history. The BBC, among others, refused to play it and although it technically out-sold the Number One record of the week (Rod Stewart's 'I Don't Want To Talk About It'/'The First Cut Is The Deepest'), it peaked at Number Two in the singles chart.

The band have also announced that a limited edition 7" inch picture disc of their first ever single "Anarchy In The UK" will also be released on April 21 for Record Store Day.

Tom Petty Guitars Stolen During Tour Rehearsal

Five guitars belonging to Tom Petty were stolen from a soundstage in Culver City, CA where he and the Heartbreakers were rehearsing for an upcoming reunion. Petty is offering $7,500 for the return of the guitars and has promised it will be "no questions asked."

With the advent of the MP3 and digital distribution, CD sales have plummeted and local stores have folded at an alarming rate. However, many local stores are now bouncing back after embracing the new demand for vinyl. Apart from brining customers into local stores, Record Store Day serves to highlight the growing rediscovery of vinyl records in contemporary culture. 

On April 21, Grand Rapids’ largest record distributor, Vertigo Music, celebrates the international Record Store Day with all-day music festivities. If the holiday sounds unfamiliar, it’s probably due to its recent advent. This year marks the 5th annual occurrence of the celebration, which was organized to observe the importance of the local record store in communities across the world. In the short time that the holiday has existed, it has become a centerpiece of music culture in cities throughout the US. In anticipation of the event, The Rapidian sat down with Vertigo Music’s general manager, Herm Baker, to discuss the changing face of music distribution, the continued relevance of independent music stores in contemporary culture, and the upcoming Record Store day celebrations at Vertigo Music.

Rush Reveal Album Cover Artwork, Track Listing for LP

Canadian prog-rock icons Rush have recently announced the details of their new album called 'Clockwork Angels.'  The album is slated for a June 12th release date via Roadrunner Records. The album's first single, "Headlong Flight," is supposed to be on the radio on April 19th.

The release is the veteran Toronto, ON native's 20th studio album to date and true to form, the LP follows an intricate story which centers on "a young man's quest across a lavish and colorful world of steampunk and alchemy as he attempts to follow his dreams."  The album is scheduled to be turned into a novel by writer Kevin J. Anderson later this year and he will work closely with the band's lyricist, drummer Neil Peart.

MISFITS Colored Vinyl Due On Record Store Day

Rhino will be offering three colored-vinyl versions of the MISFITS' LP 'Walk Among Us' to help commemorate the 30-year anniversary of the band's 1982 full-length classic. It is a faithful reproduction of the original with music cut from the original analog masters and packaging that duplicates details down to the printed inner sleeve.

Limited to 3,000 total copies in the United States, "Walk Among Us," the album will be pressed on red (1,250 pieces), blue (1,250 pieces) and clear (500) vinyl. Color variations will be distributed randomly. There will also be a purple vinyl pressing released internationally that will be limited to 1,500 copies.

DEAR JERRY: As a young girl, my folks gave me an album made so people could discover if they had any acting ability.

It came with an actual movie script, so I could deliver my lines while the record played the dialogue by the guest actor.

My album's guest star was Jimmy Rogers, but I don't recall anything about the scene he and I did together. Is he the only entertainer who made this type of recording?

My acting career began with that record some 50 years ago, and, unfortunately, ended about the same time. —Tiffany Shore, Pittsburgh


DEAR TIFFANY: I never got to hear your professional audition; however, you should have been a movie star just based on your snazzy name.

Jimmie Rodgers (note spelling) is just one of 15 celebrity co-stars featured on an LP in this series. Like Rodgers, each is ready to share a scene with anyone who plays the album and follows along with the script.

Titled “Co-Star (The Record Acting Game),” this atypical series was conceived by Ray Shaw, a well-known A&R (Artists & Repertoire) man; produced by the legendary Hugo (Peretti) & Luigi (Creatore); then released in mid-1958 on Roulette Records' new subsidiary, Co-Star Records.

Unlike most albums, available only from record retailers, the Co-Star series could also be found where toys and games were sold. They sold for $3.98, a top price for single-disc pop albums in 1958.

Now the 1958 issues are commonly found in the $25 to $50 range. Roulette reissued the complete series in 1977, and those are about half the price of the originals. Here is the complete Co-Star catalog, with featured guest actor and the program:

This format is identical to the many open-end interview records and tapes, frequently sent to dee jays. When properly presented, these give listeners the impression their local radio host is really talking to the celebrity.

Answers to assorted pre-determined questions are on the recording, and an accompanying script suggests the appropriate questions to lead into the reply. The record has enough dead air (silence) for the interviewer to phrase the question.

Here is a brief example of how this works:

Interviewer: The people here in (insert city) really go for your new record, (insert title). It's already one of our most requested tunes.

Recorded response by the “guest”: Thank you for saying that. We had a lot of fun recording it and it's great to know the folks here like it.

As for Jimmie Rodgers, he is far better known as a maker of hit songs than as an actor. But being Roulette's hottest recording artist in 1958 probably earned him a volume in the Co-Star series.

The same applies to Pearl Bailey, another singer in Roulette's stable at the time.

Unlike the other short stories in the series, those on the Rodgers and Bailey discs were originally written just for the Co-Star project.

IZ ZAT SO? Perhaps the Co-Star issue served Jimmie Rodgers well. Two years later, he nabbed the starring role in “The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come,” a 1961 release.

In addition to a couple more films, Jimmie twice had his own network TV variety show, in 1959 and again in 1969. One frequent guest on “The Jimmie Rodgers Show” (1959) was Connie Francis.

RONNIE MONTROSE Death Ruled A Suicide

According to Guitar Player, a report by the San Mateo County Coroner's Office, released on April 6, confirms legendary guitarist Ronnie Montrose died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The toxicology report also showed his blood-alcohol level at 0.31% when he died — almost four times the legal limit in California. No evidence of other drugs was found in his system.

The Montrose family posted the following statement on RonnieMontrose.com:

"By now, the devastating truth of Ronnie's death is public knowledge. We hope you can understand why we wanted to keep this news a private family matter for as long as possible. We can only hope that you will choose to celebrate Ronnie's life, and what his music meant to you, rather than mourn his passing. Ronnie would have wanted it that way. He loved being a guitarist, a composer, a producer, and a creator of magic. He fully understood his gifts, and yet he constantly pushed himself to evolve, improve, and make better music. He did this for himself, and he did this for you, because he adored and appreciated his fans. Please keep his energy, his joy, and his love in your hearts."

Adam Duritz Talks Counting Crows' Underwater Sunshine

After seeing the announcement that the first Counting Crows album in over four years was a covers album, the reaction around the web was somewhat tempered. A covers album is something that mainstream rock acts are supposed to put out to bide time between records. It’s not something that a band with a ridiculous amount of credibility, like Counting Crows, would do.

Once people really went through the set list of what was included on the band’s new album, Underwater Sunshine (Or What We Did On Our Summer Vacation), things clicked. This isn’t “The Joker” being covered for the ten thousandth time; these songs are Counting Crows recreations of great music that hasn’t been discovered by as many people as it should.

Adam Duritz of Counting Crows explained in an interview with Alternative Addiction, the very simple reason why the band wanted to do a covers album instead of a traditional Counting Crows album.

Queen at Top of Britain's All-Time Top Selling Albums, Adele Continues to Climb

As part of the celebration of the Bank Holiday in the U.K. on Monday, BBC2 brought in legendary DJ Tony Blackburn to count down the forty biggest selling albums of all-time.

The chart, compiled by Britain's Official Chart Company, is topped by Queen's Greatest Hits, which has sold 5.8 million copies since its release in 1981. Second is the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band with 5 million sold.

Beach House Reveal Album Details

Dream-pop duo Beach House have recently revealed the release date, the album cover art and tracklist for their new album 'Bloom.'  The effort is scheduled for release on May 15, 2012 via Sub Pop.

The label also announced its release of the single “Lazuli” on a limited-edition blue vinyl 7” for Record Store Day on April 21, including the non-album b-side "Equal Mind."

The record went out of print when Conversion closed up shop a couple of years later. The album was out of print for two years and it was re-released by Revelation on CD in 2000. Now, Call On My Brothers is coming back to vinyl for the first time since 1995! 538 pressed on purple vinyl and only available from record stores on April 21st.

FARSIDE Rigged LP (REV033)Their incredible second LP. So Cal's finest in melodic punk. Great songs, incredible harmony, essential packaging. SENSE FIELD Killed For Less LP (REV032)The first full-length album from one of the most incredible bands out of Los Angeles. Fourteen songs that take music to new levels and incredible artwork by Gavin Oglesby. Like a lot of our titles from the '90s, this release has been out of print on vinyl for several years. INTO ANOTHER Self Titled LP (REV024)Their first release. Metallic prog-core that set the wheels in motion for a band that even now – fifteen years later – is still ahead of their time. Like Sense Field and Farside, this album has been out of print for years. Now you can own it on green vinyl. 553 pressed for Record Store Day.

Doctor Who Sound Effects LPs Reissued On Vinyl
Two 1970s sound effects LPs are to be re-released on vinyl for Record Store Day.  In a collaboration between audiobook publisher AudioGo and Discovery Records, two albums full of spacey genius from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop will be available on vinyl from 21 April, complete with original sleeve artwork and liner notes.
