Ronnie James Dio (1942-2010)

Ronnie James Dio, the vocalist for Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath (replacing Ozzy Osbourne), Dio and Heaven and Hell, passed away on Sunday morning after battling stomach cancer. He was 67.

In a statement on Dio's website http://www.ronniejamesdio.com/  his wife Wendy said "my heart is broken".

"Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away," the statement said.

"Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us."

Dio started his career in the 60's, playing bass and trumpet for a local group called the Vegas Kings. The group later became known as the Electric Elves and, in the early 70's, Elf. The group released three albums, none of which charted, and were guests on two album by Roger Glover of Deep Purple. It was through Glover that they met Richie Blackmore, who used the musicians from the group to form Rainbow.

Buddy Holly signed with Coral Records in 1957.

Motown Records was formed in 1960.

In 1963, the Beatles appeared live on the national BBC TV children's program ‘Pops and Lenny’, at Television Theatre, Shepherd's Bush Green, London, in front of an live audience. The Beatles performed "From Me to You" and a shortened version of "Please Please Me."

Mary Wells started a two week run at #1 on the US singles chart in 1964 with "My Guy."

In 1965, while driving away from a gig at the Civic Hall, Long Beach, California, the limo taking the Rolling Stones back to their hotel was besieged by fans who caved in the roof by standing on it. The band attempted to hold the roof up while their chauffeur drove off with bodies falling onto the road. Cool....

Also in 1965 - The Rolling Stones appeared with Chuck Berry on the television show "Hollywood A-GO-GO."

The Beach Boys appeared on the "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1965 and performed "Help Me Rhonda."

The Beach Boys released the album 'Pet Sounds' in the US in 1966. The album is now regarded as the masterpiece of composer-producer Brian Wilson, and is often hailed as one of the best and most influential albums in popular music

Tony Joe White recorded the swamp classic "Polk Salad Annie" in 1968.



In 1969, a man rushed on stage and grabbed the microphone. The Who’s Pete Townshend thinks it’s just some crazy guy from the audience and boots him off the stage. Turns out, the fellow is a NY policeman who ran on stage to tell the Fillmore audience the building next door was on fire. Townshend was dragged from the stage by police officers and spent the night in jail. The Who guitarist was later fined $30 for the offense.

Randy Bachman left the Guess Who in 1970.

Crosby Stills Nash & Young went to #1 on the US album chart in 1970 with 'Deja Vu.'

Al Green, Etta James and Joe Simon with J.J. Malone, Little Denise, Harvey Mandel and Paul Lagos appeared at Oakland Coliseum, California. It was billed as 'The Baddest Soul Show Of 1972.'

In 1974, Neil Young made an unannounced appearance at The Bottom Line in New York and played songs from his new album 'On The Beach.'

The Eagles’ Hell Freezes Over Tour ended in 1995. It’s seen by over 2 million fans and earns $135 million. Not bad for guys who said they never play together again.

In 1998, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards fell while reaching for a book of nude art in his Connecticut home. The fall broke his ribs, causing the Stones to postpone many dates on their Bridges To Babylon tour.

The Britney Spears album "Oops!..I Did It Again" was released in 2000.

The world breathed easier in 2000 when Prince announces that he will resume using his name (Prince) rather than a symbol to identify himself. The use of the symbol was his response to all sorts of corporate dealings that he had a problem with (to put it mildly). Now that the contracts have expired he’s back to being Prince again.

Usher was at #1 on the US singles chart in 2004 with "Burn," his second US #1 single of the year.

In 2006, Red Hot Chili Peppers' ninth album, 'Stadium Arcadium,' sells 442,000 copies in its first week of release to earn the group its first #1 on the Billboard 200 monitor. The album tops the charts in 16 other countries as well.

Also in 2006, Paul McCartney and his second wife, Heather Mills McCartney announce they’re separating, confirming a spate of rumors. "Both of us still care about each other very much," the couple claim in a joint statement. "But [we] have found it increasingly difficult to maintain a normal relationship with constant intrusion into our private lives." The couple married in ’02 and had a daughter, Beatrice Milly, the following year.

Money for injuries. In 2006, Mark Knopfler files suit against the female motorist who knocked him off his motorcycle in London some three years earlier. The former Dire Straits frontman broke his collarbone, his shoulder and seven ribs in the accident. He also had to cancel a scheduled European tour while he recovered. The woman was convicted of careless driving and later deported to Ecuador. Knopfler seeks approximately $566,000 in damages. 2006

Limp Bizkit's Cover Art For New LP Gold Cobra

As time closes in on the release date for Limp Bizkit's first album in 7 years, the band revealed the cover art for "Gold Cobra" out summer 2010, which will also be the first album to feature the original line up since 2000's "Chocolate Starfish And The Hot Dog Flavored Water."

The best thing I've heard from any member of the band, speaking about the release was Wes Borland's statement in a previous interview with Guitar Edge:

"I think that everyone who hated Limp Bizkit before will continue to hate Limp Bizkit. It's not like we, all of a sudden, grew up and started making smarter music. It's definitely a fun, party kind of vibe. It's a little bit like the old stuff, but with a little bit of maybe a Daft Punk vibe thrown in on some of it. There's big, huge riffs and hopefully catchy lyrics."

Beatles Press Conference Tape Up for Auction

The 1966 press conference where John Lennon is asked about his declaration of the Beatles being more popular than Jesus has been found on reel-to-reel tape and is being auctioned by Bonhams & Butterfields. The 14-minute tape also includes discussions on Viet Nam, the generation gap and how long the Beatles expect to be together. On the last subject, John Lennon replies "We're obviously not gonna go around holding hands forever." Paul McCartney adds "it would be a bit, you know, embarrassing at 35."

The tape is expected to bring upwards of $20,000.

Scissor Sisters To Release New Album in June

Scissor Sisters will release their third album, 'Night Work,' in the U.S. on June 29th on Downtown Records.

The band, which has sold over seven million albums worldwide, recorded the album in London, the Bahamas and New York City, working for the first time with an outside producer, Stuart Price (The Killers, Madonna).

Scissor Sisters will play second to headline at the Glastonbury Festival on June 26th and will headline the iTunes Festival at The Roundhouse in London on July 1st. See below for a detailed U.K. itinerary. U.S. tour dates will be announced shortly.

Cassette tapes make a comeback

AUSTIN, Texas — On the second day of this year’s South by Southwest Music Conference and Festival, Philadelphia-based Free Energy, like other buzzed-about acts, played the Levi’s Fader Fort, a weeklong party that has become one of the most popular events for music fans who don’t bother with a wristband.

The group, whose music has drawn comparisons to a host of classic rock bands from the 1970s, released its debut album digitally in the beginning of March. Its members came to Austin equipped with marketing materials meant to help get their music heard, and they handed out what some might consider a curious artifact — cassette tapes.

“The only people who listen to CDs now are old people and people who sold their vinyl collection and bought CDs and now are stuck with them,” lead singer Nick Shuminsky said during the festival. “Most bands that tour have (expletive) vans that still have tape players, and the idea is that, at the very least, our friends in bands can listen to our record while they’re touring.”

Bo Diddley’s “Bo Diddley” backed with “I’m A Man” landed on the R&B charts in 1955. Both songs were later covered in the '60s by British groups.

In 1956, Buddy Holly's optometrist gives him contact lenses for his 20/800 eyesight, but he can't get used to them, so the trademark glasses stayed.

Elvis Presley was rushed to a Los Angles hospital in 1957 after swallowing a porcelain cap from one of his front teeth, which then lodged its-self in one of his lungs.

In 1960, The Silver Beats (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stu Sutcliffe, and Tommy Moore) performed at Lathom Hall, Seaforth, Liverpool. They played a few songs during the "interval" to audition for promoter Brian Kelly. Also appearing are Cliff Roberts & the Rockers, The Deltones, and Kingsize Taylor & the Dominoes. This is the only occasion on which the group uses the name "Silver Beats", quickly changing it back to "Silver Beetles".

Jan & Dean began recording "Little Old Lady (From Pasadena)" in 1964.

The Rascals recorded "People Got To Be Free" in 1968.



In 1968, Paul McCartney and John Lennon appeared on NBC-TV's "Tonight Show" (with guest-host Joe Garagiola).

Dennis Yost and Wally Eaton of the Classics IV were seriously injured in a car crash near Atlanta in 1969. (Wally never again tours with the group)

Leo Sayer went to #1 on the US singles chart in 1977 with the Albert Hammond and Carole Bayer Sager song "When I Need You."

Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart in 1988 with "Anything For You."

Also in 1988 - Atlantic Records celebrated its 40th anniversary with a televised cable show. Atlantic Records celebrates its 40th anniversary at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Yes, Genesis, Foreigner and Crosby, Stills & Nash, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Wilson Pickett and Ben E. King performed. A re-united Led Zeppelin hits the stage with Jason Bonham filling in for his late father John. Zeppelin plays “Stairway To Heaven” and “Whole Lotta Love.”

The album 'Revenge' was released by KISS in 1992. The album featured a new drummer, Eric Singer.

During an auction at Christies in London in 1993, the acoustic guitar that Elvis Presley used to make his first recordings in 1954, "That's All Right Mama" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky" sold for $152,000. And four 'Super Hero', Costumes worn by the group Kiss sold for $35,385.

In 2004, Steven Tyler fulfilled a terminally ill female fan's wish when he gives her a kiss after Aerosmith`s concert in Winnipeg, Canada.

As if he didn't already have enough trouble, in 2004, Phil Spector was arrested after getting into a scuffle with his chauffeur at his California mansion. The 64 year old record producer was taken into custody and later released after a court date was set.

In 2005, a judge in Springfield, Massachusetts, ordered rapper 50 Cent to stay clean of drugs and take an anger management course to avoid spending time in jail. The rapper appeared in court charged with assaulting three women at a concert in 2004 after leaping into the crowd.

In 2007, Capitol/EMI announced that Paul McCartney's post-Beatles catalog will be sold digitally. "For the very first time, McCartney and Wings albums will be made available across all digital platforms," reads the EMI/Capitol statement.

Retro Ron's spreads word of vinyl revival

MANKATO — Where North Broad Street and Madison Avenue collide, a building sits frozen in time — a time before laptops and hybrid cars, plasma TVs and high-definition.

Retro Ron’s brings to mind childhood memories for some. For those who can barely remember life without Twitter, it provides a much-needed history lesson.

Operated by Mankato’s Ron Nord, Retro Ron’s is a vintage music store that prides itself on transporting customers back to the heyday of music and American culture with seemingly endless amounts of vinyl records, cassettes and even 8-tracks.

“Buy, sell, trade — whatever works,” Nord said.

After opening shop Feb. 2, Nord has been diligently spreading the word about the revival of vinyl. Dealing in parts, pieces, players, needles and all things vinyl, Nord’s business reflects a return to vintage music and the means to play it. The unfortunate bit, and what he can’t stress enough, is that unlike digital music, records easily succumb to wear-and-tear, crippling the value of the majority of albums he sees.

“It’s like anything else in the antiques and collectibles market: condition is the utmost importance,” he said. “(There are) very, very few collectible records.”

Nord said a record’s worth is decided by condition, artist and number produced, and in that order. The varying degree with which people treat their albums is a shame, he said, but it does result in the 50-cent and $1 bins that line Retro Ron’s.

“One scratch will drop a $100 record down to $2,” said Stafford Taillon, a personal contractor and Minnesota State University student who retools record players and the like from a small work station in the back of the store.

Nord reiterated: “Ninety-five percent of records are worth 50 cents to $3; that’s their resale value. We have to pay wholesale.”

For collectors, finding the diamond in the rough is what makes collecting so interesting, so addicting, and Nord would be the first to agree. Retro Ron’s is out to promote the fun in discovering old things in a new way, not to give the customer a bad deal, he said.

Nord said in a previous shop he operated, just after Michael Jackson died last summer, a few fans wondered how much Nord would “soak ’em” for a vinyl copy of “Thriller” or “Bad.” They’re $3 each, he told them.

Nord said he requests every entering patron’s taste in music so he knows what to play while he/she browses the store. A listening station, “the chair of sound” as Nord calls it, allows customers to try out albums before purchasing them as well.

A self-proclaimed “born promoter,” Nord promises to call on the connections he has made over years of dabbling in the music industry to play both announced and unannounced sets in the store. This, on top of plans to adorn the tiny interior with black lights, tube lights, lava lamps and beaded doorways, will surely redefine (or, perhaps, re-redefine) music fans’ ideas of a shopping experience, he said.

In a way, Retro Ron’s is Nord’s way of complementing and putting on display what he feels is a city rife with musical talent and musical history.

“Oh, it’s a hotbed for music,” he said. “There are so many good bands and music around.”

Of course, ask the business owner, disc jokey and “singing auctioneer” yourself, and he might give you a different answer, and few stories to go along with it.

“This is so fun because every day is totally different.”

DEAR JERRY: “Louie Louie” has been recorded by everyone and their brother, and is regularly played at sporting events. But how does it rank among the all-time most recorded songs?


Richard Berry did the original, but the Kingsmen are the ones most associated with the song. Did their hit come before or after the one by Paul Revere and the Raiders? Both were popular here in Portland.


Which do you think is the strangest version? For me, it's probably the Troggs, and the way they borrow heavily from their hit, “With a Girl Like You.”

DEAR ROYCE: For non-seasonal recordings, the majority of the lists ranking most-recorded songs have Richard Berry's “Louie Louie” second only to Paul McCartney's “Yesterday.” Over 1,000 recordings exist of “Louie Louie,” with at least 1,600 versions made of “Yesterday.”

My insertion of the non-seasonal caveat allows for how ever many thousands of recordings exist of Irving Berlin's “White Christmas.” Recent estimations place the number of different recordings of this holiday classic at around 10,000! (Please don't ask me to list them.)

The Kingsmen and Paul Revere and the Raiders both recorded “Louie Louie” during the same week, April 1963, at the same Portland studio, Bob Lindahl's Northwest Recorders. The Kingsmen are from Portland, the Raiders hail from Boise, Idaho.

Some evidence points to the Raiders' “Louie Louie” session being April 11, 1963, with the Kingsmen coming in two days later to lay down their version.

This conjecture, however, is disputed by some who say the Kingsmen first made a demo of the song, which the Raiders heard, liked, and quickly waxed.

Regardless, neither of these groups were first in the northwest to revive Richard Berry's tune.

That honor goes to Tacoma's Bill Engelhart, who, as Little Bill and the Bluenotes, released it in 1961 (Topaz 1305).

Then along came Rockin' Robin Roberts with his single (Etiquette 1) in 1962. This brought Roberts to the attention of the Wailers, one of the top northwest acts at the time, and soon Robin began wailin' as a Wailer.

Before November 9, 1963, the week the Raiders and Kingsmen both debuted in the Top 100, no recording of “Louie Louie” ever appeared on any of the Billboard or Cash Box charts.

Nationally, the Kingsmen clearly dominated; however, as you recall, Portland did not ignore the Raiders. Both versions were hits in the Rose City, as well as Boise, of course.

Regarding whose is the strangest “Louie Louie,” I vote for Julie London. Originally one of the cuts on her 1969 LP, “Yummy Yummy Yummy” (Liberty LST-7609), Julie's sultry cabaret vocal with a jazzy, piccolo-led ensemble make this track seem like it came from a distant galaxy.

Then again, it is somewhat at home in a mix that also includes London taking on Manfred Mann (“Quinn the Eskimo”); Fifth Dimension (“Stoned Soul Picnic”); Jose Feliciano (“Light My Fire”); and perhaps most unexpected of all, the title track, “Yummy Yummy Yummy,” a bubble gum hit for the Ohio Express.

Being strange is not necessarily being bad. In fact, I rather enjoy Julie London's passionate handling of this Louie fellow.


IZ ZAT SO? There is one quirky sidebar to the “Louie Louie” story. When the Kingsmen record reached No. 2 (December 14, 1963), the Singing Nun was enjoying her second consecutive week at No. 1 with “Dominique.” It's hard to imagine the nation's top two tunes more widely divergent.

Stalled at No. 2 for two weeks under the French language “Dominique,” the Kingsmen then got bumped down to No. 3 the following week (December 28, 1963), giving ground to Bobby Vinton's “There I've Said It Again,” while “Dominique” remained on top.

Came the new year and “Louie Louie” surged again to No. 2, but would remain locked right there for the entire month of January. For those four weeks, the bridesmaid Kingsmen were topped by Vinton's “There I've Said It Again.”

On February 1st, “I Want to Hold Your Hand” zoomed to No. 1 — a position the Beatles would occupy for 20 of the next 48 weeks.

BLUR BOW TO ALBUM PRESSURE

British rockers BLUR have returned to the recording studio and are planni ng to release a new album - just weeks after the band's label boss called for a new record. The Parklife hitmakers released their last album, Think Tank, in 2003, shortly after guitarist Graham Coxon walked away from the band during rec ording.

They successfully returned to the stage last year (09) for a series of gigs, and recently released a limited edition vinyl single as part of a c ampaign to save record stores.

Parlophone Records president Miles Leonard subsequently urged the group to get back in the studio and give fans what they want - a new album.

Now, frontman Damon Albarn has confirmed the band will release a collec tion of new tracks in the "undetermined" future.

He tells NME, "I'm definitely going to do a few more of those seven-inc hes (vinyl records) and at some point in the undetermined future there wi ll be a record at the end of it.

"I love the no pressure aspect. Just going in the studio and recording it in a day is something we haven't done since the B-sides in the early d ays.

"We can't do it all the time. So I don't want anyone to think there's a n album coming soon, it's not possible, but we've got songs!"

BONE GNAWER: 'Feast Of The Flesh' Vinyl Re-Release To Include Limited-Edition 7" EP

"Feast Of Flesh", the debut album from BONE GNAWER — the Swedish-American collaboration featuring MASSACRE/ex-DENIAL FIEND growler Kam Lee, Rogga Johansson from PAGANIZER/RIBSPREADER, Morgan Lie from NAGLFAR/HATE AMMO and Ronnie Bjornstrom of RIBSPREADER/HATE AMMO — will be re-released on vinyl, with the first 99 copies including a limited-edition seven-inch single, "Scissored", containing three brand new tracks — "Back To The Butchery", "Leave Her To The Cleaver" and "Scissored".

Thin Lizzy are about to reform and do a 2011 tour (although no word that THEY will be doing a full album in their shows). The new lineup will include original members Scott Gorham, Brian Downey and Darren Wharton along with Viv Campbell (Def Leppard), Marco Mendoza (Whitesnake, Ted Nugent) and Ricky Warwick (Almighty's).

Also look for a series of reissues of classic Thin Lizzy albums from Universal.

Born on this day in 1942, Ian Dury, singer, songwriter, poet, actor. Dury died on March 27, 2000 (age 57).

Singer and TV presenter Perry Como died in 2001 (age 88). He scored fourteen US #1 singles, from 150 US chart hits and over 25 UK chart hits, including the single "Magic Moments" and "Catch A Falling Star." Como was once the highest-paid performer in the history of television.


History:

The Everly Brothers started a four-week run at #1 in the US in 1958 with "All I Have To Do Is Dream" (the song was written in 15 minutes).

In 1962, Billboard Magazine reported that last year's most-played jukebox record was "Big Bad John" by Jimmy Dean. The second most-played was Chubby Checker's "The Twist."



In 1963, Bob Dylan walked out of rehearsals for the US TV Ed Sullivan show after being told he couldn't perform "Talking John Birch Society Blues" due to it mocking the US military.

The Beach Boys started a four week run at #1 on the US album chart in 1964 with 'Beach Boys Concert', the group's first US #1.

'Are You Experienced', the debut album by Jimi Hendrix was released in the UK in 1967. To celebrate, Hendrix played a gig at the Bluesville Club, Manor House in London.

A British radio station debuts the Beatles' 'Sgt. Pepper' album in its entirety in 1967.

In 1968, Jimi Hendrix was arrested by police on his way to Toronto for possession of hashish and heroin. Hendrix claimed the drugs had been planted on him. He was exonerated.

Brian Jones made his final live appearance with The Rolling Stones in 1968 when they appeared at the New Musical Express Poll Winners Concert at the Empire Pool, Wembley, England.

Rolling Stone Mick Jagger married Bianca Macias at St Tropez Town Hall in 1971. The guest list included the other members of the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton and Stephen Stills. The couple separated in 1977.

The Rolling Stones released the album 'Exile on Main St' in 1972.

Led Zeppelin started a three week run at #1 on the US album chart in 1973 with 'Houses Of The Holy', the group's third US #1 album.

In 1975, Jefferson Starship gave a free concert in New York's Central Park in front of 60,000 fans. The band and concert sponsor, WNEW-FM, were forced to pay $14,000 for cleaning up and damage done to the park after the event.

Lionel Richie started a two week run at #1 on the US singles chart in 1984 with "Hello" his second US solo #1, also a #1 in the UK.

In 1996, 17-year-old Bernadette O'Brien died the day after being injured 'body surfing' at a Smashing Pumpkins gig at The Point, Dublin.

Hootie & the Blowfish went to #1 on the US album chart in 1996 with 'Fairweather Johnson'.

In 2000, thieves stole the gates to Strawberry Fields the Merseyside landmark immortalized by The Beatles song. The 10' high iron gates were later found at local scrap metal dealers in Liverpool.

In 2008, singer-songwriter Neil Young had a spider named after him. US university biologist Jason Bond discovered a new species of trapdoor spider and decided to name it after his favourite musician. Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi was found in Jefferson County, Alabama, in 2007.

John Lennon: The New York Years opened at New York's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Annex NYC in 2009. The Lennon-themed exhibit, created by his widow, Yoko Ono, benefits the Spirit Foundation, a charity begun by Lennon and Ono. "I so hope it will be a true gift to New York City's residents and visitors," says Ono.

Official Cover Art of 'Eclipse' Soundtrack by Muse

An official artwork featuring an eclipse has been unveiled as the cover art of Muse's upcoming single "Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever)". The song is recorded for movie "The Twilight Saga's Eclipse" and will make its debut on May 17.

Muse previously contributed to soundtrack compilation of the first installment of "Twilight" movie series, having their song "Supermassive Black Hole" listed on the album. Also, they landed their track "I Belong To You (New Moon Remix)" in the theme song compilation of "The Twilight Saga's New Moon".

This year, soundtrack album of "Eclipse" will be released across the United States on June 8 and has been made available for pre-order on Amazon. A very short preview of the forthcoming lead single performed by the British band has hit the web for a teaser.

It's being reported that Bret Michaels intends to overcome his recent health scare to perform a set of Poison 25th anniversary concerts next year, according to the band's drummer Rikki Rockett. The singer checked out of hospital in Arizona earlier this week to recover from surgery at home, following a near-fatal brain haemorrhage.

Michaels is now starting to overcome the scare - and he's working towards making a full recovery in time for the band's 25th year in 2011 so he can perform onstage with his bandmates. Rockett tells U.S. talk show host Larry King, "We have every intention of doing it. Bret and I, as a matter of fact, talked about it this morning when we were on the phone. And we have every intention of doing a 25th anniversary next summer and - you know, I really strongly believe he's going to make it, and that's what we're going to be doing next year. We're going to keep on working."

Miley's Cover Art Unleashed

The official cover art of Miley Cyrus’ new album ‘Can’t Be Tamed’ has just been released. The cover art shows the 17-year-old pop icon in an unbuttoned black leather jacket, with her toned abs exposed, and matching black tight pants.

The album is set to be officially released in the United States on June 22 with the title single already released. Prior to the release, She is set to perform live at the Rumsey Playfield in Central Park on June 18 for “Good Morning America” summer concert series.

Katy Perry’s Latest Single ‘California Gurls’ Comes Out

Katy Perry’s brand new single called “California Gurls” has been released.  The new song features up-beat tempo which urges music fans to go dancing on the floor.

The cover art has also been launched as well. Katy was wearing a blue-wig while she sits under an umbrella in a beach.

It was agreed that the track will be included in Katy’s upcoming third studio album which is still waiting to be titled. Snoop Dogg will be featured. It was recorded as an answer to Jay-Z’s New York anthem “Empire State of Mind” which features Alicia Keys.

“It’s so great that ‘Empire State of Mind’ is huge and that everyone has the New York song, but what the f**k? What about LA? What about California?” she told Rolling Stone. “It’s been a minute since we had a California song and especially from a girl’s perspective. We took the references of Prince, which is always a great reference, and some of the ’90s, almost house music references.”

The song, which can be seen and heard on Katy Perry’s official site, will be performed at the MuchMusic Video Awards which will also guest Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus. The album is expected to be released later this year.

Keith Richards Hints At Special Rolling Stones Gigs...Guitarist talks about their live plans...

Keith Richards has hinted that the Rolling Stones may stage a series of one-off gigs which see them play some of their most famous albums in full.  The guitarist told XFM that the idea had been suggested within the group, but that any plans had yet to be finalised.

“I have heard a rumour being passed around, but it's in the rumour area," Richards said.

“I have heard the idea being mentioned in passing. Where there's smoke, there's fire, you know?

He added: “That idea has occurred a few years back, where tonight you do 'Let It Bleed'… it’s an idea that’s been around, but we haven't taken it by the horns yet.”

The Rolling Stones last tour, A Bigger Bang, ended in 2007.

R.I.P. Frank Frazetta

Pioneering fantasy artist Frank Frazetta died Monday in a Fort Myers, Fla., hospital, a manager said. He was 82.

"He's going to be remembered as the most renowned fantasy illustrator of the 20th Century," said his manager Rob Pistella.

Frazetta created covers and illustrations for more than 150 books and comic books, along with album covers, movie posters and original paintings. His illustrations of Conan the Barbarian, Tarzan, Vampirella and other characters influenced many later artists.

Frazetta rose to fame after a series of acclaimed comic book covers for Buck Rogers in the 1950s. From there he turned down a recruitment offer from the New York Giants to continue his highly profitable line of work drawing movie posters, starting with What's New, Pussycat?. Eventually he moved on to the adventure-novel covers for which he is most famous, including the Conan series begun by Texan Robert E. Howard.

​But Frazetta also left a mark on the world of music, and musicians have sought out his paintings since the 70s for use as album covers. The most famout of these was Molly Hatchet, who used three covers and made Frazetta's "Death Dealer" the most famous fantasy painting of all time when it graced their 1978 self-titled album. The 1970s also saw Frazetta's work grace albums by Nazareth and Dust.  His innovational artwork will be missed by all.

Born today in 1935, Larry Williams, US singer, The Beatles and The Jam covered his songs. Williams died from gunshot wounds on January 2, 1980 (age 45).

Singer, songwriter poet, cartoonist, screenwriter, and author of children's books Shel Silverstein died of a heart attack in 1999 (age 57). Wrote, "A Boy Named Sue" for Johnny Cash (which Silverstein won a Grammy for in 1970) and many songs for Dr Hook including "Sylvia's Mother" and "The Cover of the Rolling Stone."


History:

In 1960, The Silver Beetles (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe, and Tommy Moore) auditioned for promoter Larry Parnes and singer Billy Fury for a job as Fury's backing group. Parnes was also looking for backing group's for his lesser-known acts, and The Silver Beetles were selected as backing group for singer Johnny Gentle's upcoming tour of Scotland. The group had changed its name from 'The Beatals' to 'The Silver Beetles' after Brian Casser (of Cass and the Cassanovas) remarked that the name 'Beatals' was "ridiculous". He suggested they use the name 'Long John and the Silver Beetles', but John Lennon refused to be referred to as 'Long John'.

Dusty Springfield made her US television debut on the "Ed Sullivan Show" in 1964.

The Rolling Stones conducted their first “official” recording session at London’s Olympic Studios in 1963 with manager Andrew Loog Oldham producing. They record their version of Chuck Berry’s “Come On." The song is the group’s first single though it’s initially rejected by Decca Records who call the track “dreadful.” It eventually peaks at #21 in the U.K.

The Rolling Stones recorded part of "Satisfaction" during two days at the legendary Chess Records studios in Chicago in 1965.

Paul Revere & The Raiders’ anti-drug song, "Kicks," peaks at #5 on the US chart in 1966. The song was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil for The Animals, who passed on it.

Led Zeppelin made their first appearance on the UK album chart in 1969 when the bands debut album charted at #6, going on to spend 71 weeks on the UK chart. It entered the US chart the following week at #10. Now considered one of the most important debuts in rock, creating an entirely new interpretation of the rock and roll genre because of the groundbreaking music and recording techniques. The album was recorded in 36 hours.

In 1970, David Bowie was awarded an Ivor Novello Award for Best Original Song "Space Oddity," which he performed that night accompanied by the Les Reed Orchestra. The event was transmitted live via satellite to venues in America, France, Spain, Australia, Holland and Venezuela.

In 1972, Slade started their first major headlining tour in Bradford, supported by Status Quo.

The Who sold out Madison Square Gardens in New York City for four nights in 1974, selling 80,000 tickets.

Eric Clapton recorded "I Shot the Sheriff" in 1974.



Apple Records was dissolved in 1975.

In 1975, Stevie Wonder played in front of 125,000 fans at a free concert near the Washington Monument to celebrate Human Kindness Day.

Adam And The Ants made their live debut in 1977 when they played at the ICA, London.

Metallica began recording the album "Kill 'Em All" in New York in 1983. They finished on May 27, 1983.

In 1985, all girl group The Go-Go's announced they were breaking up. The members went on to enjoy solo success, (Belinda Carlisle and Jane Wiedlin) and the group reformed in the late 90's.

Falco was at #1 on the UK singles chart in 1986 with "Rock Me Amadeus." Falco became the first-ever Austrian act to score a UK and US #1 hit single and the first German speaking artist to achieve a #1 on the US charts.

Tommy Lee (Motley Crue) and Heather Locklear were married in 1986.

The Pet Shop Boys went to #1 on the US singles chart in 1986 with "West End Girls," the duo's first US #1, also a #1 in the UK.

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards was released from an Auckland, New Zealand, hospital in 2006, two days after undergoing brain surgery following a reported fall while on vacation in Fiji. "[Thanks to] the doctors and the beautiful ladies who make painful nights less painful," says the guitarist in a statement. "I hope I wasn't too much of a pain in the arse." He probably was but that’s Keith.

In 2006, Great White's former tour manager, Daniel Biechele, was sentenced to four years in prison for his role in the February ‘03 blaze that killed 100 people at a Rhode Island club. The 29-year-old Biechele faced involuntary manslaughter charges for igniting the pyrotechnics that caused the deadly fire. He was handed a 15-year term but the judge then suspended 11 of those years.

In 2007, US hip-hop artist Akon apologised after footage of him dancing provocatively on stage with a teenage girl was posted on the internet. It led to telecommunications company Verizon pulling out as a sponsor of his US tour with Gwen Stefani. The incident took place on 12 April in Trinidad, where Akon was performing at a nightclub. It was later reported that the girl was just 14. In a statement Akon said he didn't know the girl was underage. He said: "I want to sincerely apologise for the embarrassment and any pain I've caused to the young woman who joined me on stage, her family and the Trinidad community for the events at my concert.”

In 2008, Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington celebrated the 13-year anniversary of Club Tattoo in Tempe, AZ. Bennington and his friend Sean Dowdell founded the tattoo and body-piercing parlor. "These parties have always been special to us," says Bennington, who also performs with Dead By Sunrise in their live debut. "I wouldn't call it a side project," says Bennington. "We're a full, ready-to-go band and so this is something we take very seriously."
