Vinyl Record News & Notes, Did You Know?

HEAVY METAL FILM FESTIVAL: Official Artwork Revealed

Los Angeles-based painter/cartoonist Tom Neely has dedicated his talents to creating the official artwork for the first annual Heavy Metal Film Festival, set to take place at the Downtown Independent Cinema in Los Angeles, California this coming March 31 through April 3.

Festival organizer and long-time metalhead Samuel Douek states the following about his collaboration with Neely: "Hollywood has certainly seen a fair amount of film festivals, but none as heavy as this! The artwork celebrates the heavy arrival of metal in Hollywood and I'm very happy with Tom Neely's fingerprints being all over this soon-to-be historical event."

Fireforce Uploads "March On" Cover Art

Belgium's Fireforce has uploaded the cover artwork for the band's new album "March On." Fireforce also recently commented on the album:

"Be prepared for 12 tracks of pure true heavy metal with a monster wall of sound! The recordings for the new Fireforce album 'March On' are already done under the supervision of R.D. Liapakis (Mystic Prophecy, Suicidal Angels, Orden Ogan, Eldritch, etc.). Guest guitars solos by Constantine, guitar player of Mystic Prohpecy (follower of GUS G) and Decsending.

"Eric Philippe, well known for his work with Rhapsody, Riot, Mob Rules, TNT and many others, created and realized the Fireforce logo and artwork. Release Date: 25th March 2011 over the 7HARD label. Watch out for big promotion in magazines like Rock Hard, Heavy, Rock Tribune, Terrorizer, Rock It, etc."

Great album cover art!

Metallica Planning To Enter The Recording Studio In Spring

In a recent interview with the Danish tabloid newspaper, Ekstra Bladet, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich said that the band is looking to enter the recording studio this Spring to start work on the band's next studio album, its first since 2008's 'Death Magnetic.'

"There is a really good vibe in the band at the moment. Previously, Metallica would hang us by the throat when we came home from a mammoth world tour, but this time it's different. Therefore it does not appear to be a long time before we start work on a new album. I think we'll be ready in March and April - when the creative process reaches a boil we'll go into the studio.

"We really enjoy it now. It has helped in our relationship that we all have families and that we have children who work well together. There were some bad years when we never really talked together, we just hopped in a vodka bottle and went out to look for ladies. It meant we did not share our feelings with each other. Today we talk a lot about our children and our families, and it has helped that we have something else to talk about than what setlist is tonight."

Junos To Honor Neil Young

Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young is scheduled to receive the 2011 Allan Waters Humanitarium Award during the March 27 Juno Awards telecast in Toronto. The award recognizes "a Canadian artist whose humanitarian contributions have positively enhanced the social fabric of Canada."

"We are thrilled to salute Neil Young's committed and compassionate legacy," said Melanie Berry, president/CEO of the Junos. "As a driving force behind one of music's most successful fundraising events, Farm Aid, and a key participant in Live 8 right here at home, his tenacity and spirit is highly regarded among his peers, and serves as an inspiration to all of us."

Foo Fighters Announce New Album Release Date

Foo Fighters have recently announced that their as-yet-untitled seventh studio album will be released in the UK on April 11. The LP will be their first of new material since 2007's 'Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace' topped the UK Album Charts. It was also nominated for five Grammy Awards.

Long labelled as one of the "nicest men in rock," the group's modest front man Dave Grohl has had the band recording their new output in his garage with Nirvana's 'Nevermind' producer Butch Vig. It's the first time the pair have worked together since that album, and is far from the only renewed link to Grohl's previous band.

The BBC revealed that, in a series of news snippets leaked on their social networking accounts including Facebook and Twitter, the group have revealed that Nirvana co-founder and guitarist Krist Novoselic will make a cameo on the new album, while their former touring guitarist Pat Smear will formally join the "Foo Fighters core."

Ghost Heart – The Tunnel LP

Grand Rapids, Michigan quartet Ghost Heart have just released their stunning debut full-length, 'The Tunnel,' via Friction Records.

Available on both CD and 12″ vinyl (clear + pink / amber), The Tunnel features accessible yet expansive rock songs that synthesize electronica, American folk, samples, tribal percussion, shoegaze guitar sounds and layered vocals to produce an effect that is at once joyously communal and deeply personal. Ghost Heart’s sound has been described by the Detroit Metro Times as “a little of Animal Collective and Vampire Weekend, only with more heart.” Instantly gratifying in some moments, challenging in others, The Tunnel is a unique listening experience.

Chaz Martenstein of Bull City Records

At 1916 Perry St., in Durham, N.C., Bull City Records hangs above a video-rental store. Together, the businesses are an anachronistic presence on the Durham side-street within spitting distance of Duke University’s campus. Other neighbors sell burritos, dance lessons and jewelry. But here, in the midst of it, two shops fight to give their customers an opportunity to see and hear things they won’t likely find by perusing the iTunes Store. Chaz Martenstein, Bull City’s proprietor, treats his station like a pharmacist’s, dispensing cures for what ails ya, whatever it might be.

But, this is the age of the Internet. Music and movies are omnipresent, available for the cost of a few minutes and the occasional virus. And as the record industry continues its much-publicized fall, Martenstein’s perch over Perry Street might seem a perilous one.

But from where he sits, things don’t seem so bleak. Bull City records is celebrating its fifth anniversary this month......

Fleet Foxes Announce New Album

Alt-folk darlings the Fleet Foxes have recently announced their much-anticipated follow-up to their 2008 debut album. The Seattle-based group will release 'Helplessness Blues' on May 3 through Sub Pop. The title track, which indicates that the sophomore record will feature more delicate harmonies and instrumentation, is being offered as a free download on SubPop.com.

Once again, the band recorded songs with Phil Ek, who produced their first album and both of their EPs. Once again, the music features acoustic guitars, yearning choruses and five-part vocal harmonies. And once again the cover art – this time by painter Chris Alderson, not Pieter Bruegel the Elder – evokes a homepsun nostalgia.

Fleet Foxes have also announced a short North American tour this spring. The 15-date trek begins April 30 in Vancouver, Canada.

AEROSMITH Guitarist Hopes To Complete New Studio Album This Year

AEROSMITH guitarist Brad Whitford has told the Boston Herald that the band is "really starting from scratch" during the songwriting sessions for the group's new album at the home recording studio of longtime collaborator/producer Marti Frederiksen.

"We basically go in the studio, just stone cold, and try to come out at the end of the day with another song, and so far it's worked great," Whitford said. "It has been great working at Marti's. His whole house is basically geared toward making music, so that's what we are doing all day long."

THE CHARIOT Seven-Inch Single Detailed

Georgia's THE CHARIOT is preparing to release limited-edition seven-inch vinyl album. Side A features two tracks. Track 1 is entitled "Music of a Grateful Heart" and is a brand new unreleased track from the "Long Live" recording sessions. Track 2 , "Graciously" is an alternate and extended version of the "Long Live" track "The Audience". Side B of the seven-inch is an etching of the band's familiarly infamous skull logo. The vinyl comes in four different colors with 250 pieces pressed per color (total of 1,000 copies). Each color set is hand-numbered 1 through 250. Each set will be available for purchase in a different way; one being available only at official tour dates from the band themselves, one is available at the official pre-order with a limited time bundle package, one will be made available exclusively through Hot Topic, while the remaining color set will be available to purchase at local music retail stores.

and on to music history for the day:

The 7" 45 rpm record was introduced in 1949 by RCA as a smaller, more durable and higher-fidelity replacement for the 78 rpm shellac discs.

In 1954, backed by his Jazz ensemble, Big Joe Turner records the original version of "Shake, Rattle and Roll". The tune will top the Billboard R&B chart next June, but did not cross over to the Pop chart. Some of the original lyrics, that would have been considered highly sexual at the time, were changed when Bill Haley recorded the song five months later.

In 1963, 17 year-old Neil Young performed his first professional date at a country club in Winnipeg.

In 1964, Beatlemania comes to America when "I Want To Hold Your Hand" becomes the first of twenty Billboard number one hits for The Beatles. It would stay on top for seven weeks, with world wide sales of fifteen million copies.

At Abbey Road studios in London in 1967, The Beatles started work on a new song "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." It wasn't until The Beatles had recorded the song that Paul McCartney had the idea to make the song the thematic pivot for their forthcoming album.

Sgt Pepper tidbits:

3 days after the album came out, Jimi Hendrix opened a concert with this. McCartney and Harrison were both there, and were very impressed that Hendrix learned it so quickly.

The hand-painted drum skin used on the cover of the Sgt Pepper album was sold at Christie's House in London on 10th July 2008 for £541,250 ($1,071,000) - setting a record for non-lyrics Beatles memorabilia.

The album was heavily produced and took 129 days and about 700 hours to complete. The Beatles first album, 'Please Please Me,' was recorded in less than 10 hours.

The crowd noise was dubbed in. The Beatles had stopped touring by then

In 1969, Tommy James and the Shondells started a two week run at #1 on the US singles chart with "Crimson And Clover."

The Eagles released Greatest Hits 1971-1975, now one of the biggest records in history, was released in 1976.

In 2004, Justin Timberlake caused a huge uproar when he tugged at Janet Jackson's outfit and revealed her left breast live on US TV during the half-time show of Superbowl XXXVIII (38). Four days later, that scene would become the most searched for image in the history of the internet.

In 2008, US space agency Nasa announced that "Across the Universe" by the Beatles was to become the first song ever to be beamed directly into space. The track would be transmitted through the Deep Space Network - a network of antennas - on the 40th anniversary of the song being recorded, being aimed at the North Star, Polaris, 431 light-years from Earth. In a message to Nasa, Sir Paul McCartney said the project was an "amazing" feat. "Well done, Nasa," he added. "Send my love to the aliens. All the best, Paul."

Born on this day in 1948, Rick James, US singer. Found dead at his Los Angeles home on August 6, 2004.

Born today in 1954, Mike Campbell, guitar, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Mint Condition Factory-Sealed Beatles 'Butcher Cover' Mono LP Could Bring Record Price at Heritage Auctions

There are likely less than 25 sealed copies of this record in existence.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA.- A factory-sealed First State copy of The Beatles' famously banned "Butcher Cover" mono LP , Yesterday and Today, without a doubt the Holy Grail of vinyl, is expected to bring $30,000+ when it comes up as part of Heritage Auctions Feb. 18-19 Signature(r) Music & Entertainment Auction.

"There are likely less than 25 sealed copies of this record in existence," said Garry Shrum, Consignment Director for Music & Entertainment Auctions at Heritage, "and that's probably a generous estimate. More than that, we've never seen a copy in such great condition, and we sold a 'Livingston Copy' of the 'Butcher Cover' in 2006 for more than $38,000. That price is, to date, the highest amount ever realized for a piece of wide release, non-autographed vinyl. This may well exceed that."

Many serious collectors of Fab Four memorabilia have diligently searched for even a tattered copy of this rarity, which was pulled from record store shelves in the US almost immediately after its release in 1966, ordered to be destroyed and replaced by the more subdued "Trunk Cover" version. Millions bought the second version, but few managed a copy of the infamous original, let alone one that remained sealed.

"This 'Butcher Cover' is rare enough in and of itself in good condition," said Shrum, "but to have it sealed is mind-boggling. Who has ever bought a Beatles record and not opened it?"

New Vinyl Record Talk Tuesday February 1st 8pm ET/ 5pm PT

Out of the dusty boxes this week we find an uncredited 45 titled "The Ta Ta Song". This must have been put there by the record gods just for Frankie, the goddess of Radio Dentata.

So at some point we'll spin that record, and the Teddy Mack northern 45 we have on auction, plus straight out of swinging 60's London, an amazing ska record about James Bond that will make you grip tight your Walther PPK.

And we cannot let go unnoticed or unmentioned the Northern Soul / Lesbian theme in Ep. 2 of Skins - just who is this "most dangerous show on television" really for?

Join Jane and Norm for all this and the Top 5 auction sales, and more efforts to preserve places at which one or more Beatle did just about any damn thing.

Sixties Music Legends The Chocolate Watchband Releases New Greatest Hits Album

Much to the elation of fans and music critics, the Chocolate Watchband has recorded a new album of their greatest and most popular tunes.

Los Angeles, CA – When discussing legendary psychedelic garage bands of the 1960s, the Chocolate Watchband is at the top of the list. Much to the elation of fans and music critics, this famed sixties group has recorded a new album of their greatest and most popular tunes. Recorded in 2010 at KVP Studio in Santa Clara, CA, the focus on this album was to faithfully reproduce the sound of the Chocolate Watchband in the 60's with the rawness and energy of the originals. Also added were bonus verses and extended track mixes of 13 personal and fan favorites. “The Chocolate Watchband is back on the scene and ready to rock!" says Tim Abbott, guitarist and producer of the album.

"This release is all new recordings from The Chocolate Watchband. I had the privilege of premiering some of these songs on the 2010 Bay Area Garage Band Marathon on KKUP Cupertino. This is an incredible set of vintage garage from one of the true legends of the sixties. With this album, there can no doubt the power of their music still speaks to a whole new generation," says Phil Dirt radio DJ

The goal was to re-create the sound and energy of the sessions with producer Ed Cobb, from the first three Watchband albums that were recorded for Tower Records in 1966, '67, and '68. Electronically reproducing the reverb of the old 'Echo Chamber' from American Recording studio in Studio City, CA, different percussion instruments were added including sleigh bells, tambourines, chimes, temple bells and more exotic instruments like sitars, harpsichords, theremin and bouzouki that gave the original recordings their distinctive sound.

"As the Chocolate Watchband's de facto historian and the producer behind most of their reissue packages, I can state with authority that the Greatest Hits package is as authentically Watchband as any of this singular group's vintage recordings." Alec Palao-Ace Records UK and Associate Producer

Featuring:
David Aguilar- Vocals, Harmonica, Percussion
Bill Flores- Bass
Gary Andrijasevich- Drums and Background Vocals
Tim Abbott- Lead Guitar, Keyboards, Sitar, Flute, Bazooki, Harmonica and Background Vocals.
Alby Cozzette- Electric, Acoustic, and 12 string Guitars, and Background Vocals.

The Chocolate Watchband formed in San Jose in 1965. The band's music was described as “a blend of 1960s-style garage and psychedelic rock with a distinguishable ‘Rolling Stones’ San Francisco sound. Produced by Ed Cobb, the group's early music combined the influences of blues with a psychedelic edge that featured terse lyrics and instrumental experimentation. The Chocolate Watchband appeared in the 1967 film 'Riot On Sunset Strip' and the 1968 film 'The Love Ins'. The band released three highly acclaimed LPs from 1967 to 1969 before disbanding in 1970. In 1999, they reunited at the San Diego event 66/99 in San Diego, CA, organized by musician/journalist Mike Stax. They continue to play today at garage rock festivals in Europe as well as the States with Little Steven, The Yardbirds, Love, The Zombies, Bo Diddly, Iggy Pop, the Strawberry Alarm Clock and the Electric Prunes.

I checked their website, I don't think it is being offered on vinyl, which leads me to think, if they were trying to recreate some of the sounds, why not use analog?

Vinyl, alive and kicking

by Brian Tucker

My record player may die on me. It might just need a new motor. Coming home after buying used records from Yellow Dog Discs I sat down to work and spin my purchases – The Psychedelic Furs “Forever Now,” the 1978 “Superman” soundtrack, and Leon Russell’s “Leon Russell and the Shelter People.”

Upon lifting the arm the player wouldn’t spin. I tried again. Nothing. On the third try it spun and I was able to play Russell’s “Stranger in a Strange Land.” Looking back I see the fitting nature of the song title – the presence of vinyl records in the vast digital market today is indeed strange. Today you can find almost as much vinyl as CD’s in both Gravity Records and Yellow Dog Discs.

more stuff everybody should know...

The king of hearts is the only king without a moustache on a standard playing card!

There are no clocks in Las Vegas gambling casinos!

More people use blue toothbrushes, than red ones.

The Beach Boys recorded "Surfin' U.S.A." and "Shutdown" on this day in 1963.

Who's that playing the piano on the "Mad About You" theme? It's Paul Reiser himself..

More people are killed by donkeys annually than are killed in plane crashes.

Leonardo Da Vinci invented the scissors.

THE LAW OF THE LAND:

The law states that more than 3000 sheep cannot be herded down Hollywood Blvd. at any one time.  Really?  Who counts them?

MUSIC FACTS:

In 1957, Decca Records announced that Bill Haley And His Comets' "Rock Around The Clock" had sold over a million copies in the UK, mostly on 10 inch 78's.

The Beach Boys recorded "Surfin' USA" in 1963, a song that climbed to number three in the US by mid-April. Although it was credited as being composed by Brian Wilson, the tune was a note-for-note cover of Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen." Following a lawsuit, Berry was granted writing credit and royalties from the record.

In 1967, The Beatles spent a second day at Knole Park, Sevenoaks, Kent, England to complete filming for the ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ promotional video. The film was shot in colour, for the benefit of the US market, since UK television was still broadcasting only in black and white. Taking time out from filming John Lennon bought a 1843 poster from an antiques shop in Surrey which provided him with most the lyrics for The Beatles song ‘Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite’.

In New Orleans, LA in 1970, the Greatful Dead were busted for possession of LSD and barbituates. The event was alleged to be the inspiration for the song "Truckin."

Bigs news back in 1972 - Less than a day after an incident now known as "Bloody Sunday" in which British soldiers killed twelve Irish civil rights demonstrators, Paul McCartney writes and records "Give Ireland Back To The Irish". After some resistance from EMI, the song will finally be released on February 25th, but was immediately banned by the BBC, Radio Luxembourg and the Independent Television Authority. Despite the lack of air-play, the song would reach #1 on the singles charts in the Republic of Ireland and Spain, also climbing to #16 on the UK singles chart and #21 in the US.

The Ohio Players went to #1 on the US singles chart in 1976 with 'Love Rollercoaster.'

In 2009, Dewy Martin, drummer and backing vocalist for Buffalo Springfield on their 1967 hit "For What It's Worth", died from hardening of the arteries at the age of 68.

and in 2010 - Beyoncé set a Grammy record for females when she won six. The six awards were Song Of The Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song, and Best Contemporary R&B Album. Nobody else got any awards, seems they ran out!

Calgary's preserver of pop art past

You can't blame Jerry Keogh for being nostalgic. The poster shop owner is surrounded by rare remnants of the past, which just happen to be wise investments in pop art culture.

By Eric Volmers, Calgary Herald

The modern-day Jerry Keogh would probably not approve of how a young Jerry Keogh began his collection of rare and colourful concert posters as a youth in Edmonton.

Now the owner of Calgary's Heritage Posters, which deals in rare and colourful concert posters, Keogh had a less formal mode of acquiring these items in his youth.

"You would see a poster stapled to a wooden telephone pole," he says. "So you stop and look at the poster and say 'That's great.' And you'd rip it off. That's how I started collecting all these posters. Just ripping them off telephone poles."

Arhoolie Records founder Chris Strachwitz celebrating 50 years of preserving American roots music.

By Jim Harrington
Oakland Tribune

Chris Strachwitz can't seem to go 10 minutes without playing music.

As he tells the fabled history of Arhoolie Records, the El Cerrito-based label he founded in 1960, he finds it necessary to mix music with his words. He sits in his small, crowded upstairs office in the back of his record shop Down Home Music on San Pablo Avenue, and splits his attention between a vinyl turntable, a digital database of a near-infinite number of songs and some of his favorite music videos on YouTube.

an interesting read from the UK:

Reggae: the sound that revolutionised Britain

Punk may have got all the headlines, but reggae proved vital in ending the rift between black and white teenagers and introducing cross-pollination to the charts

Neil Spencer The Observer

It was punk's "summer of hate", 1977, and the required pose was a sneer, a leather jacket and something hacked about – a spiky haircut, a ripped T-shirt, a sawn-off school tie. And, of course, no flares, the despised flag of hippiedom. But at the cold, concrete roots of Britain a very different aesthetic was also in the ascendant, one calling for an oversized tam, dreadlocks and a display of "the red, gold and green", the colours of Rastafari. Flares? Fine!

The two looks represented the different worlds inhabited by young white and black Britain, worlds which a year previously had been remote from each other but which by the summer of 1977 were unexpectedly and often uncomfortably rubbing shoulders.

Independent retailers get ‘significant boom’ after banner year for vinyl sales

By Dave Larsen, Staff Writer

DAYTON — Vinyl record sales boomed in 2010, and several area independent music retailers are benefitting from the trend.

Vinyl was the fastest-growing music format in an otherwise distressed year, according to data from Nielsen SoundScan. The throwback format increased 14 percent, selling more copies in 2010 than any other year since SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991.

SXSW 2011 Confirms Record Pressing Super Panel

SXSW 2011 Confirms Vinyl Record Panel for Saturday, March 19th “Vinyl Records 3.0 – Challenges and Rewards”

Industry Leaders in Mastering, Production, Printing and More Will Tackle The Question: Are Vinyl Records Surpassing All Other Music Formats in the Music Industry Market Today?

On Saturday, March 19, 2011, the SXSW Music Conference will host the panel “Vinyl Records 3.0: Challenges And Rewards,” bringing together six music industry professionals to discuss the current state and future of vinyl records in the marketplace. Within the past five years, vinyl record sales have steadily been on the rise. According to Nielsen Soundscan, 2.2 million units were sold in 2009, marking a 33% increase from the year prior, which was already a landmark for the medium with sales increasing nearly 50% in 2008. However, vinyl record production is a multi-tiered process; independent artists looking to break into the medium for the first time and those labels reacquainting themselves with the process are still faced with a unique set of decisions and challenges. The “3.0” panel will address such concerns by moderating audience questions and discussions throughout the entire event.

Panelists will discuss in detail the initial audio preparation, mastering, submission, manufacturing processes, print and packaging, design aspects and other details required to successfully release an album on vinyl. Emphasis will be placed on staying within budget and on schedule, while creatively expressing the musiciansʼ vision. A complete list of panelists is below. For more information, visit http://www.sxsw.com/  or any of the panelist websites.

Panelists Include:
