WOE: LP Version Of 'A Spell For The Death Of Man' Now Available

Philadelphia-based black metal band WOE has announced the official release of the long-awaited LP edition of its debut full-length, "A Spell for the Death of Man". A mid-July release is planned as a collaborative effort between Creeping Vine Productions and WOE frontman Chris Grigg's own label, Subvert All Media.

Originally released on CD by American label Stronghold Records in 2008, "A Spell for the Death of Man" received universally positive reviews, and was hailed as one of the "most important black metal releases in years" by a number of publications.

With an initial pressing of 500 copies on red wax, the album features entirely new cover art courtesy of artist Justin Miller, whose artwork for the CD version has been described as "the final song" by Grigg, as well as a printed inner sleeve. The music comes straight off of a brand-new master taken from the original HD recording. Commented Grigg, "This is the album I recorded, the album I wanted to hear. This is WOE as it was intended."

Killswitch at #7 on Album Charts

Killswitch Engage’s fourth album, titled "Killswitch Engage," debuted at #7 on this week’s Billboard Top 200, shifting over 58,000 copies. It is the highest charting album of the band’s career. Killswitch Engage also debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top Hard Music chart. The album, which is the band’s fourth effort for Roadrunner, was produced by noted knobsman Brendan O’Brien (AC/DC, Rage Against the Machine) and co-produced by guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz.

KISS Are Alive!

Rock legends KISS has confirmed that they have finished work on their brand new studio album. A message from vocalist/guitarist Paul Stanley reads as follows:

"If you been reading KISSOnline, it's no surprise to you now. We ARE done recording our new album.

Squash Bowels Reveals New Album Details



Polish grinders, Squash Bowels, have announced the tracklisting for their upcoming album, "Grindvirus," which is due out in September via Rotten Foetus Records. The album was recorded and mastered at Hertz studio in Bialystok, Poland in May and June 2009. The artwork was done by Lukasz Jaszak (Behemoth, Carpathian Forest, Blood Red Throne, Emperor, Gehennah).

The Audreys Reissue Albums On Vinyl

South Australian folk legends The Audreys are re-releasing both of their ARIA award winning albums on limited edition vinyl. The records will be in stores this weekend, or you can order them directly from the band’s website by clicking here.

"Honestly, it's because we are all total audiophiles and we loved the thought of owning our own records on vinyl,” vocalist Taasha Coates told Undercover when asked why they’re going with vinyl.

Vinyl releases aren’t just a case of ringing up the vinyl cutters and sending off the tapes either, things have to be redesigned and remastered.

“It's been a long process and we are all getting our copies in just a couple of days, which is really exciting,” Coates explains. “Maybe we’ll just fondle the artwork and listen to a track or two.”

“All the artwork had to be re-designed to suit the new layout which was quite a lot of work,” Goodall said. “Album covers used to be a real art form but it's hard to get as worked up about a 5 inch CD case. Next record we'll release on vinyl at the same time as the CD version, assuming people dig it of course.”

Great music by a fantastic band from down under.

History:

In 1956, crooner Pat Boone released his version of "Ain't That a Shame" which became his first #1 hit.

Ageless Dick Clark made his debut as host of "Bandstand" on a Philadelphia TV station in 1956. The name was changed to "American Bandstand" when it went to ABC-TV.

Elvis' second film, Loving You, premiered in 1957.

A Minneapolis based Catholic youth magazine, "Contacts," launched a campaign in 1959 for "clean lyrics in pop songs." Songs they targeted included Elvis Presley's "Wear My Ring Around Your Neck" because it promotes going steady. Oooooh.

The Troggs' "Wild Thing" entered the Top 40 in 1966, on its way to the top position.

Working at Abbey Road studios in London in 1969, the Beatles recorded “Maxwell's Silver Hammer.” John Lennon returned to the studio after recovering from a car crash in Scotland, and a bed was installed in the Abbey Road studio for Yoko, who was pregnant, and who had been more seriously injured in the car accident.

Jim Morrision was buried at P'ere Lachaise Cemetary in Paris in 1971.

In 1972, Paul McCartney and Wings kicked off a 26-date tour appearing at the French town Chateauvillon. The band travelled on a double Decker London bus with psychedelic interior. It was McCartney's first time on the road since the Beatles broke up.

Alan O'Day went to #1 on the US singles chart in 1977 with the insipid cut “Undercover Angel,” his only solo hit.

Elvis Costello quit his day job at Elizabeth Arden Cosmetics in 1977 to become a full time musician.

In 1978, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones jammed with Muddy Waters at Chicago's Quiet Knight.

In 1981, the Jacksons began a 36 city tour. The show will gross $5.5 million. They donate $100,000 to the Atlanta Children's Foundation following a show at the Omni in Atlanta. Later, Epic Records releases "The Jacksons Live."

The Police started an eight week run at #1 on the US singles chart in 1983 with “Every Breath You Take” (also #1 in the UK). Sting won Song of the Year and The Police won Best Pop Performance for the song at the 1984 Grammy Awards.

Cheap Trick went to #1 on the US singles chart in 1988 with “The Flame,” the group's only US #1.

In 1990, Keith Richards right index finger becomes inflamed after a concert in Glasgow. It is diagnosed as being septic. A week of shows were postponed, amazingly the first time that the Stones missed a show due to a band member's illness or injury.

Michael Jackson was at #1 on the US album chart in 1995 with “Past, Present and Future Book 1.”

In 1995, the Grateful Dead give their last concert with leader Jerry Garcia at Chicago's Soldier Field. Jerry dies a month later while in drug rehab of a heart attack.

In 1996, for the first time, Deep Purple played "Smoke on the Water" in the Swiss city that inspired the tune. The band wrote "Smoke on the Water" after surviving a nightclub fire in Montreux.

In 1999, Mary Chapin Carpenter canceled a concert at Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts in Springfield, MO, at the last minute. She had to fly home to tend to a very sick Golden Retriever. I like it.

Rare John Lennon Acetate Test Pressing Offered To Collectors

The John Lennon collectibles market has always been popular and remains this way nearly thirty years after his death. On sale right now is a acetate test pressing of the LP "Wedding Album."

















(PR July 8, 2009) -- Possibly one of the rarest Beatles related records:

A one-of-a-kind acetate test pressing of John Lennon's Wedding Album is now being offered for sale to Beatles memorabilia collectors. This item is on consignment from a major record collector who is retiring.

Numerous searches on the Internet fail to show another item like this being offered or sold. As a vinyl record appraiser, this is the coup-deville, the mother load, if you will. He are some specifics from the seller:

"Timing is the same as the album. Record does show some marks and a ding in the start of the cue lines but probably won't affect play. Please see photos for examples. None of the marks should skip the record but let’s be honest, "DON'T PLAY IT", it's an acetate. No gray grooves and probably only played once or twice by the original owner."

Let's explore the details of the album:

The Wedding Album is the final LP of three experimental albums by John Lennon and Yoko Ono and was released in 1969. The record consisted of two tracks, one on each side of the record. Side one, simply called, "John & Yoko," is a recording of Lennon and Ono calling to each other, through a range of emotions, over the sound of their heartbeats.

Side two, "Amsterdam," consists of a series of interviews, conversations and captured sounds during the couple's famous "Bed-In" honeymoon. After being married on March 20, 1969 and being experts at marketing, the couple used the event to publicly promote world peace by inviting the press into their hotel room (room #702 at the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel in the Netherlands) for interviews and conversations about world peace. In fact, the next month, John and Yoko sent acorns to the heads of state in various countries around the world in hopes that they would plant them as a symbol of peace. However, the couple was not granted a single visit with any world leader.


The Wedding Album was initially released on Apple Records and reissued in 1997 through Rykodisc with three bonus cuts - all of them B-sides by The Plastic Ono Band composed by Ono.

As a vinyl record appraiser, I have never seen an item like this offered before and my online efforts to find a similar item being offered were fruitless; so the asking price of $25,000 is acceptable and within collectible market limits. For any fan of the Beatles (John was technically still with the group at the time), and specifically John Lennon, this rare acetate would make a compelling addition to any collection.

DEAR JERRY: Your recent recap of all the Beatles live shows brought back fond memories for me.

In the summer of 1964, I was lucky enough to see the Beatles in concert. I say see, but not hear, since all the screaming pretty much drowned them out.

One of the opening acts was a pretty young blond singer whose name might be Shannon, but whether that's a first or last name I don't know.

What I do remember after 45 years is how she sang some Buddy Holly songs, but added the same kind of “wooooo” that the Beatles practically turned into a trademark.

Can you supply the details that my brain has seen fit to discard?

DEAR MARSHA: First, here is one morsel of information you might want, in case your ticket stub got tossed:

Assuming you watched (not heard) the Beatles in the area where you now live, then the date you and about 8,000 others crammed into Indiana State Fair Coliseum (Indianapolis), is September 3, 1964. That building is now named the Pepsi Coliseum.

Opening for the Beatles that summer — their first American tour — were the Righteous Brothers; Bill Black's Combo; the Exciters; and that “pretty young blond,” singer-songwriter Jackie De Shannon.

An admitted Buddy Holly fan, he inspired Jackie's first Liberty single, appropriately titled “Buddy” (Liberty 55148).

Dozens of tribute recordings exist to Holly, as well as the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens, but what sets Jackie De Shannon's record apart is it came out in August 1958, over five months before the February 3, 1959 plane crash, in which those three stars and their pilot (Roger Peterson) perished.

In early 1964, Liberty issued Jackie's versions of two Buddy Holly classics on a single: “Oh Boy” and “I'm Looking for Someone to Love” (F-55678). It is “Oh Boy” where she does a few marvelous McCartneyish “wooooos,” as he does in “She Loves You.”

With Jackie doing two shows a day in front of huge crowds in sold-out venues, Liberty jumped on the bandwagon by gathering a dozen of her earlier tracks and packaging them in an album titled “Breakin' It Up on the Beatles Tour” (LRP-3390/LST-7390). Among these cuts is “Oh Boy,” but not “I'm Looking for Someone to Love,” though the 20-track CD edition includes both, plus “Maybe Baby,” making for three Holly tunes.

While this is an excellent compilation of De Shannon's 1962-'64 output, it has nothing to do with her live shows with the Beatles.

Less than a year after breakin' something on the Beatles tour, Jackie took the Hal David - Burt Bacharach tune, “What the World Needs Now Is Love” to the Top 10.

In the summer of '69, “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” made the Top 5. Written by Jackie and Jimmy Holiday, this became the biggest hit of her singing career.

Jackie's overall top seller, “Bette Davis Eyes,” which she wrote for Kim Carnes, reached No. 1 in 1981.

Now the name game: Born Sharon Lee Myers, Jackie's first record (1956) identifies her as Sherry Lee . On the next two (1957-'58), one of which is “Buddy,” she is Jackie Dee. The subsequent five labels (1959) credit Jackie Shannon, with the four that follow (1959-'60) showing her as Jackie deShannon. Finally (1960), Jackie De Shannon becomes the standardized name, even though her personal preference is Jackie DeShannon.

Enough details for ya?

IZ ZAT SO? Because Jackie De Shannon and Buddy Holly both began recording in 1956, plus her admiration for him, folks assume the two were friends, or had at least met.

While such a meeting never took place, as Jackie explains, they did come close to performing together in early 1959:

“Though I never met Buddy, I was scheduled to do a show with him. However, that same evening his plane went down in an Iowa cornfield.”

Jackson Dominating Charts

The sales of Michael Jackson's albums in the United States increased 90% last week over the previous week's already record totals. Sales of Michael Jackson’s catalog topped over 800,000 copies in the first full week since the singer’s death. Leading the charge was Jackson’s Number Ones, selling 339,000 copies to rank Number One on the Top Albums chart (Jackson’s discography is ineligible for the Top 200 chart because the releases are older than 18 months). Thriller came in at Number Two with 187,000 copies. Both albums sold more than the week’s Top 200 champ the Now 31 compilation, which sold 169,000 units.

A check of eBay shows that there has been some over-the-top listings, one "Thriller" LP listed at 1 million dollars (I hope that got pulled) And there are some that list the "Thriller" album as "RARE". Rare?

"Thriller" was recognized as the world's best-selling album on February 7, 1984, when it was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records. It is one of only three albums to remain in the top ten of the Billboard 200 for a full year, and spent 37 weeks at number one out of the 80 consecutive weeks it was in the top ten. The album was also the first of three to have seven Billboard Hot 100 top ten singles, and was the only album to be the best-seller of two years (1983–1984) in the US. The album is cited as having sold between 47 and 109 million copies worldwide; the Guinness Book of World Records lists Thriller as having sold 65 million copies as of 2007, a number that has certainly gone up.

So, when reading these idiot posts about a "RARE" "Thriller" LP, be wary, it is just some fool trying to cash in on Jackson's untimely death. I have noticed that the records on ebay are selling for about triple of what the record price guides are listing, so don't overpay for a Jackson LP.

Beastie Boys Album Set For Reissue

The Beastie Boys latest album to be reissued has been announced.

The band are set to reissue III Communication later this month.

The multi-format reissue will hit store shelves on July 14 via Capital Records with pre-orders now available on Beastieboys.com.

The reissue will include b-sides and rarities with the ultra-deluxe 3 LP vinyl version to include a hardcover coffee table book case and will be limited to 1500 copies.

Carrie Underwood to Release a New Album in November

Carrie Underwood has announced she’ll be releasing a new album on November 3.

The American Idol winner hasn’t had a new album out since 2007’s Carnival Ride, and though her third and upcoming album doesn’t have a name yet, she’s currently working on it and plans for the first single to be hitting the airwaves late this summer.

Carrie’s first two albums, Some Hearts and Carnival Ride, have sold over 10 million units and netted her the distinction of being the first country artist hit to 10 #1 hits off her first two albums.

Soundgarden Box Set Release?

Soungarden have been talking, however not about touring or recording, but about the band’s legacy.

“The only thing that we have talked about is trying to put together an album of B sides and maybe a box set with some unreleased tracks we have,” Cornell releated to Rolling Stone. “This is something we first talked about 10 years ago. We all feel it’s time to do that, and we have a lot of fans out there, and we have a lot of new fans discovering our music, and I think the catalog and the legacy of the band has been ignored by the record label and previous management, so we decided to get together, and start working towards putting something like that out.”

Cornell was steadfast in his denial that a tour would be happening this time next year, adding that such talk has been nonexistent. His main Soundgarden-related focus? Getting those B sides out.

“We did so many B sides, and we were always miffed by the concept that the largest part of our audience was in the U.S., and yet, we were always churning out B sides for other territories, so they would buy the local release instead of the import. That’s what I am the most excited about, to get that collection out so every one knows its there and has access to it. I think a box set would be good, too.”

New Lennon Song?

It's rumored that there may be a third new Beatles track about to be released. "Now and Then" was recorded by John Lennon in 1978 and there have been rumors that of its existence since the Anthology recording sessions in 1995. A source has told BeatleNews.com that Paul McCartney has done some embellishments over the last couple of years to prepare the cut for release.

The source said, "There is no doubt the song is finished, none, or that the finishing touches were done over the last couple years. There is no doubt that all four Beatles are on the track. I heard that George Harrison sings back up as well as playing at least one guitar. It is thought McCartney sings at least some back up, if not more and plays several instruments. It is also possible he wrote additional sections to the song. Why it is not out, I dont know. My sources cannot be revealed but they are very reliable."

Sir Paul & Beatles Catalog

There have been reports about the Beatles' publishing rights and where they are with releation to the death of Michael Jackson. Some have said that Jackson had promised Paul McCartney that the rights would pass back to him upon his death. When no mention was made of it in his will, it supposedly left McCartney devastated.

McCartney has released a statement addressing the rumors, basically calling them all hogwash:

For the Record - Message From Paul

Some time ago, the media came up with the idea that Michael Jackson was going to leave his share in the Beatles songs to me in his will which was completely made up and something I didn’t believe for a second.

Now the report is that I am devastated to find that he didn’t leave the songs to me. This is completely untrue. I had not thought for one minute that the original report was true and therefore, the report that I’m devastated is also totally false, so don’t believe everything you read folks!

In fact, though Michael and I drifted apart over the years, we never really fell out, and I have fond memories of our time together.

At times like this, the press do tend to make things up, so occasionally, I feel the need to put the record straight.

Jayhawks First-Ever Anthology Hits Stores

Jayhawks fans began to rejoice in late 2008 when it was reported that founding members Mark Olson and Gary Louris had completed an album. The duo had rekindled their association on tour dates over the previous three years, and the album Ready For The Flood (produced by Chris Robinson) was released by New West in January 2009. In support, Olson and Louris set out on a new round of cross-country tour dates, including SXSW in March.

The good news just keeps coming with the announcement of a Jayhawks reunion with bassist Marc Perlman (plus drummer/­vocalist Tim O'Reagan, and Karen Grotberg on keyboards and vocals) - the first time they have performed together in the US since 1995. The band has been booked for shows in Europe during the spring and summer 2009 (including Barcelona's Primavera Sound Festival, May 30th). Topping the schedule will be a homecoming reunion gig at the Basilica Block Party outdoor festival in Minneapolis on Friday, July 10th.

The historic Twin Cities reunion show will serve as the official launch party for Music From The North Country: The Jayhawks Anthology, which will be available July 7th at all physical and digital retail outlets through American/ Legacy, a division of Sony Music Entertainment. The vocal harmonies of Mark Olson and Gary Louris, the shimmering and intuitive layers of guitars, and above all the consummate songwriting bears witness to one of the most incandescent bands in the American country-rock tradition - be it labeled "alt country," "Americana," "No Depression" or any comparable genre.

Under the guidance of Gary Louris, the first compilation ever released on the Jayhawks is a career-spanning assemblage of 20 signature singles and album tracks - from their 1989 debut album on Minneapolis-based Twin/Tone Records, Blue Earth, through all five of their albums on the American Recordings label: the breakthrough Hollywood Town Hall (1992), Tomorrow The Green Grass (1995), Sound Of Lies (1997), Smile (2000), and Rainy Day Music (2003).

Labels Targeting Hardcore Fans With Super-Deluxe Box Sets

As CD sales continue to slip, artists and record labels hope they’ve found a cure for slumping numbers by appealing to consumers with a taste for rock fetish objects: super-deluxe box sets. From Neil Young’s comprehensive (and $250) 10-disc collection Archives Vol. 1 to a $60 version of Dave Matthews Band’s new Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King (complete with 14 lithographs) to the 45-disc Beacon Box capturing the Allman Brothers’ entire run at New York’s Beacon Theatre, deluxe box sets have seen a recent resurgence, with a new target audience in mind — the hardcore fan.

The new issue of Rolling Stone explores some of the biggest — and priciest — super-deluxe boxes coming out this year, what they mean to the record industry and why store owners are still nervous about stocking these massive sets in these hard economic times. But despite the recession, there are consumers out there willing to splurge on the extra product. The $200 reissue of Pearl Jam’s Ten sold out its entire 10,000 run, and earlier this year the Beastie Boys sold a fabric-covered vinyl Check Your Head for $100. “I know this sounds corny, but you’re talking about a record that someone’s had a long-term relationship with,” the Beasties’ Mike D tells RS. “People don’t mind spending a bit more money to get a more in-depth version that record.”

To me, anyway, this is a sad attempt by the record companies and artists to sell their music via CD, a music medium that has seen its day in the sun. Buy vinyl, the sound experience will never be as bad as the compressed music that you get via digital music.

They Are Missed:

The late Mary Ford ("Vaya Con Dios" with then-husband Les Paul) was born in 1924.

Former Pink Floyd leader Syd Barrett passed away in 2006 at age 60 following a long battle with diabetes. The singer-guitarist was a founding member and wrote the majority the group’s ‘67 debut album, "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn." He left Floyd the following year after suffering a drug-induced mental breakdown. "Syd was the guiding light of the early band lineup and leaves a legacy which continues to inspire," read a statement from the group.


History:

In 1962, David Rose and his Orchestra went to #1 with “The Stripper.”

The Monkees began a nationwide tour in 1967 with some guy called Jimi Hendrix supporting.

The Yardbirds called it quits in 1968, leading guitarist Jimmy Page to form the New Yardbirds in order to fulfill some tour commitments. The group, featuring Robert Plant, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones, becomes Led Zeppelin.

In 1969, George Harrison recorded his new song “Here Comes the Sun” with just two other Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Star at Abbey Road in London. John Lennon was absent recovering from a car crash in Scotland.

In 1973, Billy Preston started a two week run at #1 with “Will It Go Round In Circles,” his first of two US chart toppers.

“Talking Heads ’77,” the New Wave quartet’s debut album, was released in 1977. It contains “Psycho Killer,” an older song dating back to their days as the Artistics.

Prince started a five week run at #1 on the US singles chart in 1984 with “When Doves Cry,” his first US #1 which went on to sell over 2 million copies, it made # 4 in the UK.

Led Zeppelin played their last-ever concert in 1980 when they appeared in West Berlin at the end of a European tour. The set included “Black Dog,” “Rock and Roll,” “Kashmir,” and “Stairway To Heaven.” They finished the show with “Whole Lotta Love.”

Bruce Springsteen went to #1 on the US album chart in 1984 with “Born In The USA.” The album went on to spend a total of 139 weeks on the US chart. It’s also one of three albums (Michael Jackson's Thriller and Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814) to produce seven Top-ten US singles.

The Grateful Dead’s “In the Dark” was released in 1987. It marked the creative resurgence of the Dead following guitarist Jerry Garcia’s near-death after having lapsed into a five-day diabetic coma the previous year. The album peaked at #6 and sold more than 2 million copies.

In 1989, it was announced that for the first time compact discs were out selling vinyl albums. Very sad indeed.

In 1990, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti performed for the first time as the Three Tenors in Rome during soccer's World Cup tournament.

Janet Jackson played the first night on her ‘All For You World Tour’ at the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Oregon in 2001. The 72-date tour grossed over $55 million.

In 2000, Eminem's wife, Kimberly Mathers, was hospitalised after she slit her wrists following her husband's show as part of the Up in Smoke Tour at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

Nelly started a three week run at #1 on the US album chart in 2002 with “Nellyville” his second US #1, peaked at #2 on the UK album chart.

In 2007, the Live Earth concerts took place around the world with The Police closing the days events in New Jersey. The concerts were organized by former US Vice-President Al Gore, as part of his campaign to "heal the planet". Rock stars from around the world performed to hundreds of thousands of fans to highlight climate change. Concerts were held in Washington, Rio de Janeiro, Johannesburg, London, Hamburg, Tokyo, Shanghai and Sydney. Madonna brought London's Live Earth concert to a close, playing a song she had written for the event. Other major acts who appeared included; Snow Patrol, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Genesis, The Beastie Boys, James Blunt, The Foo Fighters, Duran Duran, UB40, Snoop Dogg, Enrique Iglesias, Crowded House & Joss Stone.
